Finding it impossible to online game

My connection was fine for the first 6 or so weeks, but since then its sunk so badly that online gaming is next to impossible. I get rubber banding issues, disconnection issues and insanely high ping playing things such as Lord of the Rings online/TF2/MW2 and BF:BC2. The issue with MW2 could possibly be explained by BT capping P2P transfer according to a friend of mine, but the issue with LOTRO is pretty funny, when running tracert gls.lotro.com mine hops about 10 times more than a friend who lives 2 miles away on Virgin Media, and has about 4 time outs on the way. Anyway, enough of that, speed links are here:

  • Jerky Connection - Impossible to play online games...

I recently switched over to BT ADSL internet. My connection with my old ISP was fine and had no problems. However now my connection seems very inconsistent which is particularly noticeable during online games because data is constantly being transferred.
Instead of the game characters moving around smoothly as usual, they jerk from position to position. My ping is fine though (<20). I made a short video so this can be seen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoTqO6-oLfE
This problem is not constrained to just gaming though. Webpages sometimes seem to 'hang' until I refresh and suffer occasional short disconnects. If I ping google.co.uk for example, you can see various losses and lag spikes:
Here is the status of my line:
Is there anything un-usual with these results? Things I have already tried include:
    - Resetting Router
    - Different Router
    - Different Microfilters
    - Different Computers
    - Disabling Antivirus and Firewall
    - Port Forwarding
Using a wired connection with an iPlate and BT Home Hub 3.0. Im a new customer and clearly something is not right - playing games online is virtually impossible. Ive already tried BT online help but seems if I want any more advice than "reset the router" I have to call a premium rate number!? Does BT block any ports or throttle the connection at all? Would it be possible for a BT engineer to come and investigate the problem and maybe fit a new socket?
    Thanks for any advice, Ben.

your connection speed appears ok for your current attenuation but there are a lot of crc/hec errors and errors seconds for a conenction time of only 12hrs.  with number of changes you have tried each requiring a reset I am surprised that your noise margin is still only 4.5db
I see you use an iplate so must have an NTE5 master socket.  have you tried connecting to the test socket with a new filter and see if that helps. if you do conenct to test socket can you repost new stats please.
can you also run btspeedtester and post results
try quiet line test  dial 17070 option 2  should hear nothing and best with corded phone  if cordless then dull hum normal

  • The making of an online game

Hello all users of the sun forums.
I've always been facinated of games and have been wrestling with the idea about learning enough to be able to make a simple online game.
I got several questions, mainly to see if this is something realistic or if it's not doable as a lone wolf.
Would java be the right programming language for a online game? (As it can be run on many different platforms, its a good candidate).
    - Any other languages that should be learned in addition to java?
    - Specific books that would benefit for the making of a online game?
What database technology should I learn about that would be the most beneficial for a online game? (be it a small or a large game)
I know very little about servers and networking, so some points about things to read up on would be nice.
And something i've always wondered about - How powerful server do you need for a 100 player thirdperson strategy game?
I know this might take me some years to learn, but its fun to have something to fill my sparetime with.
And sorry for my bad english!

Are there big differences between SQL databases command vise?Well. Not big differences, but significant differences. I wouldn't worry about those at the moment if I were you.
Are there any database standards except SQL?Probably, but SQL is the one you'd be using.
I've been looking through several job applications, but it's hard to put together a list of programming languages that would go along with Java. HTML, XHTML, PHP, CSS, JavaScript, .NET, C#, C++ etc..Well, HTML and CSS and such aren't really programming languages... I'd recommend that you concentrate on Java and then include other things as you go along (and realize that something might be useful to know).
My way of attacking this would be to make a roadmap of what I'm going to learn and attack it step by step, but it's hard when I don't know what I should include. Please recommend books as I find it easier to read, than tutorials on the net.I'm sure your way sounds very good, but it's impossible to do it like that. You can't decide in advance all the things that you want and are going to learn and then just go on and do it. Learning is a continuous process. I have about 10 years of Java behind me and some dabbling in other programming languages, but I still keep learning things. And I bet most of the people here with 20+ years in the industry (look at the people with tens of thousands of posts) will say the same thing.
I haven't read it myself, but Joshua Bloch's Effective Java has been recommended in several places. I hope you enjoy reading, because that's really the best way to learn and then keep up with the programming scene.

  • IPad 4 online games not working properly

ever since the release of the new update, I am having difficulty connecting some game apps online. These includes Conquer online (cannot connect to game server), Injustice (online game wins not credited) and Deer Hunter 2014 (automatic updating not functioning). The issues started even before I install the update but after downloading the update. It seems like the download of data is good (CO downloads patches normally, i can manually download map updates for DH, Injustice can download the data on which I will battle) but there seems to be a problem uploading data as seen after playing Injustice where my wins are not credited.By the way, my connection is okay so the issue is really related to the update and the bug it brings. Even tried uninstalling and reinstalling apps and updating my OS to the newest to solve problem but it persists. Contacted game support groups and they are saying that app is working normally for others.

    Hello geraldluigibryan,
You may consider contacting the developers of the affected games for further assistance, as you've exhausted all other potential troubleshooting steps detailed in the article below.
    Contact the developer
If you see the issue again, contact the developer of the app for help:

  • Receiving death threats on an online game app what do I do?

I am part of an online game where there is communications between players via "telegrams". There is an individual that is sending death threats and telling players he will find them and kill them, kill there grandmothers, rape there mothers, some of the players that are receiving these threats and messages are around 12 years old. Many of us are a part of the community forum for the game and we have expressed our concerns with the community manager but he refuses to do anything about it. Is there someone that I can talk to at apple that would be able to assist us with this problem? When I say us, there are many I am just speaking for everyone.

  • Online Game Throtelling

I recently purchased an Online Game (MMO) Final Fantasy XIV and it appears you guys are throttleing the connection at peak times making it impossible to play, this is not a P2P programme or anything like that.
Both BT and EE(Orange) seem to be throtteling the game.
Is there anything i can do on my end to change it from being seen as a p2p?
Or am i just screwed and can only play after 00:00?

You can renew your contract to totally unlimited which has the p2p management taken out of the t&c so you can play unhindered at anytime day or night

  • I'm connected to the Internet but I can't sign in on Skype or play online games?!

My parents changed the channel for the BT home hub and I am online the wifi config is all green but I can't play online game or Skype as it says I'm offline?! I have gone on advanced settings and updated my mac and restarted it but still no working but it works fine on my phone! HELP!

Am a newbie but somethings may work here, Go to dock preferences and to network and to your airport connection window.
You have a green light signal in network status window? If it is yellow or red it is unavailable. If your connection is full of traffic, this may effect connection.
In window you may need to type in optional search domains. Your provider should tell you this no one else~ They would also walk you through your connection failures. If it is yellow and you connect to your provider's router and don't have your own router, this number may not appear in your connection information. You need to tell them their router is down so they can fix it. They may not find out if pings come back. Pings may also be cached (I am not sure but it might) so it may take them a while to find out if you don't tell them. I would call your provider. Maybe empty your preferences in your browser. You may have cookies or garbage to empty there. Use another browser.

  • Nokia x6 - how to play online games.

Hello, i have got a question.
I was trying to play Online games such as MafiaWars, or other online multi player browser game. And with no results, on standard browser even page doesn't load, it does but i could seen just white screen.
Does any one have solve that problem?
I am writing to You just to get discussion about that problem. If anyone have something usefull to say please answer that question.
    Regards, David. Thanks a lot.

I know that farmville could be played if you use Skyfire as your browser, but doing so would need hell of RAM management from you. Use of memcheck, KillMe, an ideal set of installed apps that will not eat RAM while running or installed, etc.

  • Error says need plugin to play online games Mac OS 9 w/update, 500mhz 192mb

Hi I want to play online games, I have the 5.1 mac explorer installed and runs quite fast, but I cant play any online games. Error says somewhat like no plug-in or java installed , can anyone help, Mac OS 9 w/update installed, 500mhz 192mb model: M5521 imac g3 powerpc blue color crt, 2000 series

*To play games using IE*, try the following:
Update to Internet Explorer (Classic) 5.1.7
    Internet Explorer 5.1.7
    Internet Explorer v5.1.7
"WARNING:" Microsoft ended support for Internet Explorer for Mac on December 31st, 2005, and is not providing any further security or performance updates.
Accordingly, as of January 31st, 2006, Internet Explorer for the Mac is no longer available for download from Microsoft.
    ==========
Once a week in IE Edit>Preferences, delet History, Empty Cache (if you have cable set Cache to 0).
Once a week Go into the system folder>preferences folder & trash the following preferences:
    finder
    ASLM
    PPC Registration Database
Cache.waf-found inside the MS Internet Cache folder
MRJ Cache folder-a new one will be recreated.(If not found go to System folder>Application Support>MRJ Cache folder-trash all you find inside-(DO NOT TRASH THIS FOLDER)
    Download Cache-found inside Explorer Folder
    Downloads.html-found inside Explorer Folder
    History.html-found inside Explorer Folder
Rebuild your desktop w/extensions off. Use Techtool Lite or Trash*Desktop - may delete Finder comments to rebuild your desktop w/extensions off. Does a better job than manually & you avoid all the finger gymnatics. You just have to hold down the shift key to shut off extensions.
Restart to turn the extensions back on again & empty the trash.
If you want to rebuild manually, see KB article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=10182 Rebuilding Desktop File and Icon Recovery.
If the above does not work, then dump the %#&*X@ & check out other Mac browsers
iCab v3 is a pretty good online game playing browser. You do not have to do all the TLC stuff mentioned above for IE.
BTW: Which online gaming site are you having issues with? Post the link/url for OS 9.x users to test for you.
    Happy gaming!

  • WRT54G Help Online games

Ok, I have 2 computers that I'm splitting the internet connection to wired and have the wireless for my game systems (which I am not even using atm). The issue that I'm having is I play online games where latency can cause trouble. When I first start up WoW I have like 100ms latency. It slowly climbs to an unplayable 1800ms latency. Thing is, it's not consistent, meaning it happens in spikes like every minute or so. When I'm connected to just the modem I've got a cool 75ms latency that spikes to maybe 250ms latency during primetime. I upgraded the firmware on the router and that didn't do anything. Any help?

http://www.pctools.com/mirror/sdasetup.exe Use that link run an intelliscan of your computer after getting the initial updates. The problems you are describing sound to me like your router is fine, but that you may have some malware that is probably getting past your current security. If you do find things infected on your computer I would recommend registering that and then removing whatever it is you are using as it currently is probably not doing the job when it comes to protecting your PC.

  • Laggy Online Games

    Hello,
I'm experiencing some very weird lag in all online games. I have some sort of delay between the computer and a server. I’m pretty sure it has nothing to do with my computer hardware or software. I have latest drivers, hi-end computers etc..
My ping is around 35-60ms and latency is fine, but there is a 2 second delay between I do something and registers on the other end. I have this problem in every single online FPS game that I own
For example in Modern Warfare 2, I shoot at a guy and hit him about 15 times and he doesn't die and then he kills me. I looked at the replay and I didn't even fire my gun once. I have to pre-fire and aim way in front of people to hit someone which is very annoying and doesn’t always work.
I had this broadband for about 3-4 years and had no problems until couple mounts ago.
Would turning the interleaving off fix the delays?
    Any help is very appreciated.
    Thanks
    Some other info:
Have this problem on my other gaming computer.
I tried my computer at my friend’s house and there was no delay and was very playable.
The home hub sometimes reboots as soon as I join a game server.

Don't know much about PC gaming, but here are my thoughts:
The replay doesn't show the shots that you made, if the replay is hosted externally on or received from a server/host PC then something's stopping that information from hitting the host/server which would be symptomatic of another online player tampering with the connection when they're host, but you're saying that it's happening on all games...
...and anyway, I suspect the replay is collected from game data on your own PC and therefore might indicate a corrupt game installation or interference from another program on your PC.  It's probably worth thinking about anything that you might have installed or updated just prior to experiencing the issue for the first time and taking it from there.
You might also want to consider checking your machine for any nasties that you might have unknowingly picked up on your internet travels, especially from less reputable gamer sites... has anyone you've played with suggested you visit a particular site?
Free tools that you might want to download and run on your machine are Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, SUPERAntiSpyware and Lavasoft AdAware.  Should you find that you are unable to access these companies' websites then I would say you definitely have a problem and should try a system restore in safe mode back to before the problem started and try again.
Regarding interleaving, AFAIK interleaving doesn't apply to upstream, but looking at your stats I think your line and online gaming would be very happy without it, but one of the mods would be better to advise you on that.
If your machine's clean and you haven't installed anything, then it might be worth backing up any saved games and doing a clean install of MW2.
Hope you get it sorted soon!  Pew-pew!

  • WRT54G v 8.00.2 Constant Disconnects - Online Games

Yesterday, I bought the Linksys WRT54G v.8 to replace my aging Netgear wireless router. My kids both play World of Warcraft and have complained for months about constantly getting disconnected. We all thought it was the Netgear router. Well, if anything, it's worse now. I've tried several times to explain the situation to Linksys Tech Support via Live Chat but I get disconnected. I even spoke to my cable company (Time Warner RoadRunner) and they wanted me to turn off all firewalls (including the one on the router). I've turned off all the software firewalls but not the hardware one on the WRT54G. I've been doing some research, trolling around on the web trying to find a similar situation. Basically, about every 20-30 minnutes, our internet connection resets and it takes a minute or two to reconnect. Devastating in an online game. I turned on QoS (something I didn't have on the NetGear) and selected the Optimize for Gaming and entered the ports for the various online games. But I am still experiencing disconnects. I even changed the MTU from 1500 to 1400 but I eventually put it back to 1500 because it messed with my webserver. I am not a network engineer by any means but I and my children are extremely frustrated with this whole situation. Any suggestions? Any utilties I can run on my LAN to sniff out what is resetting my connection? Thanks in advance, Jon

All this trouble I went through and I was right to begin with. The cable modem went bad. It had been going bad for months! I swapped it out the day after Labor Day and my Internet connection was faster than ever and completely reliable.
Too bad no one responded to my original post though. Kind of disappointing.
