WRT54G v 8.00.2 Constant Disconnects - Online Games

Yesterday, I bought the Linksys WRT54G v.8 to replace my aging Netgear wireless router. My kids both play World of Warcraft and have complained for months about constantly getting disconnected. We all thought it was the Netgear router. Well, if anything, it's worse now. I've tried several times to explain the situation to Linksys Tech Support via Live Chat but I get disconnected. I even spoke to my cable company (Time Warner RoadRunner) and they wanted me to turn off all firewalls (including the one on the router). I've turned off all the software firewalls but not the hardware one on the WRT54G. I've been doing some research, trolling around on the web trying to find a similar situation. Basically, about every 20-30 minnutes, our internet connection resets and it takes a minute or two to reconnect. Devastating in an online game. I turned on QoS (something I didn't have on the NetGear) and selected the Optimize for Gaming and entered the ports for the various online games. But I am still experiencing disconnects. I even changed the MTU from 1500 to 1400 but I eventually put it back to 1500 because it messed with my webserver. I am not a network engineer by any means but I and my children are extremely frustrated with this whole situation. Any suggestions? Any utilties I can run on my LAN to sniff out what is resetting my connection? Thanks in advance, Jon

All this trouble I went through and I was right to begin with. The cable modem went bad. It had been going bad for months! I swapped it out the day after Labor Day and my Internet connection was faster than ever and completely reliable.
Too bad no one responded to my original post though. Kind of disappointing.

  • Constant disconnects with wireless router.

Hello and thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
I have a WRT54G wireless router with speed booster. I am experiencing constant disconnects when online gaming. I have one PC - running windows vista 64bit ultimate. This computer is running a wireless connection which is secured and is about 10 feet from the router through a wall.
I also have an xbox 360 with a wired connection. It doesnt seem to have the same issues but does become a bit sluggish at times.
I have called linksys and they instructed me on how to upgrade to the latest firmware. I think it is 7.5.0 or something. Still having issues. Cox (my ISP) has been out and says I am getting a constant 2mb download.
Any help would be appreciated. I have talked to linksys again they have me pull up cmd and run a test which shows me at a 4-10% packet loss. They say this is an acceptable rate.
Still the problems continue. If anyone can help I would be very greatful. If you need more info just let me know and I will provide whatever I can. Thanks!!!

Sounds like a vista problem, they are breading like rabbits it seems. The WRT54G is a good router, I had one for years with no problems. What type of wireless card do you have in the pc, and is it PCI or USB

  • Online game keeps disconnecting

Hello. I have the linksys router WRT54GS. I just started playing this online video game and I get disconnected every 20 min to a half hour. Can anyone help please.
I know nothing of this at all so please bear with me.
Someone told me it might have to something with the router ports but again I know nothing of this. Any help would be appreciated.

if you are "joining" an online session, you do not need to forward the ports, forwarding ports is need it only when you are the host.
don't know the game you play but I know that online games can be very difficult to play if you do not know the technical part of them....I could imagine that it not a problem in your end, perhaps it is simply wrong game online settings from the host side; it could be many things, like "rates per client", high pings, low upload internet speed, etc, etc.
if you can "chat" with the host, please let him/her know you disconnection problem....good luck.
I host myself online sessions in another game (rfactor) therefore I can tell you about wrong host settings.
    regards

  • WRT54G Ver.2 Trying to set up Online gaming.

I will give an exact detail on what I am trying to do, so it will help you all determine my problem.
I have a Wireless WRT54G ver.2 router and my buddy has the same type of set-up.
I am trying to set up an online game with my friend playing Command & Conquer Generals Zero Hour. When we set-up our game, both of our IP's are the 192.168.1.XXX. I try to connect to his I.P., but it tells me "Connection timed out". We have tried to disconnect the router on his end, and it still gives the same error. When I go into the options in the game, it says my I.P is 192.168.1.100. How can we connect if we are both using routers that have this similar IP. It is a pain in the @$$ to have to disconnect both of our routers just to get a few games in. So this is my situation, and I hope this is enough info to help me out. Thanks in advance. ~Donte

    Hi there!
You need to forward ports (by doing port forwarding on your router) first so it can pass the router's firewall...and by the way, the IP address the game is referring to is the public "Internet" IP address which is on the status tab of your router. For the forwarding instructions click here

  • WRT54GS Connection in videogames dropped, but not online

Hi, starting back in february or so, I've had this weird problem with my WRT54GS router. Originally I would be able to play Team Fortress 2 no problem, but after a few months I would get kicked out randomly every 15-20 minutes. I could still play other Steam games no problem. Lately the problem has gotten worse and worse in that I can no longer play any steam games without being kicked out of the game after 15-20 minutes, and the list has grown to games outside of Steam as well.
The list of non-working games that drop every 15-20 minutes has grown to:
    Counter Strike: Source
    Team Fortress 2
    Company of Heroes
    DoTA
The games I am still able to play online are:
    Call of Duty 4
    World of Warcraft
I have checked my router settings to ensure that they are correct (ie. ports are open, client lease time is set to 24 hrs, etc.) and it has been updated to the latest firmware.
I have built myself a new computer (with a different wireless card) since this originally happened, and my roomate also has the very same problem (with a different wireless card from the two I had used/am using), so I know it cannot be the computers and it cannot be the wireless cards.
I've checked on these forums for a similar problem and have only found one user that had one that was possibly similar (xbox would drop connection with games every 15-20 minutes).
I have run ping -t's on my second monitor while the game kicks me out to ensure my internet isn't dropping, and it isn't. So I know that for some reason the games are dropping but the internet itself still works.
Has anyone had any experience with this? It is quite frustrating and I've been trying to fix this problem for months but to no avail.

Check the latest firmware on the router ...
Also you can Enable QoS ....that is Quality of Service under Administration Tab .... that will provide highest priority to Application like playing online games ....

  • WRT54G Help Online games

Ok, I have 2 computers that I'm splitting the internet connection to wired and have the wireless for my game systems (which I am not even using atm). The issue that I'm having is I play online games where latency can cause trouble. When I first start up WoW I have like 100ms latency. It slowly climbs to an unplayable 1800ms latency. Thing is, it's not consistent, meaning it happens in spikes like every minute or so. When I'm connected to just the modem I've got a cool 75ms latency that spikes to maybe 250ms latency during primetime. I upgraded the firmware on the router and that didn't do anything. Any help?

http://www.pctools.com/mirror/sdasetup.exe Use that link run an intelliscan of your computer after getting the initial updates. The problems you are describing sound to me like your router is fine, but that you may have some malware that is probably getting past your current security. If you do find things infected on your computer I would recommend registering that and then removing whatever it is you are using as it currently is probably not doing the job when it comes to protecting your PC.

  • Online Games Problems With WRT54G Router

    Hi There ppl,
I have a Lan House with 50 comps working, and most of my costumers are looking for online games entertainment (Cabal Online, Ragnarok, Dota, CS, 9 Dragon etc). We have an 8 Gb DSL connection and another one of the same speed for back-up (not running simultaneously at the moment). We should be having outstanding results for online gamming (and we were before installing the new router) but we are having several problems since we install a new LinkSys WRT54G router here. Our physical configuration is the modem, followed by the router, than three DLink Switches(24 ports) and my main computer. Everything cable
What we noticed is that the Internet connection looks normal (even using the command "ping", nothing strange appears, no timed out at all!) but online games (specially the above mentioned) have an intermitent connection. (Some times they connect, some dont)... Looks like it happens usually when I have the house crowded, but already showed also with it empty.
Another issue is that I am using the LinkSys Advisor to help identifying this problem, but I am getting even more confused, because its giving new information each time I refresh the "my network" window. Also happens when showing "My Network Settings" on the Support Tab.
Im using Firmware 8.00.0, what I think is the newest.
I didnt try any forwarding port issue yet, as I would like to receive more information about it (never needed to configure anything related before). Concerning the MTU value I already tryed withou any significantly result.
Please If anyone had the same problem, or have any idea of other possible tests, i would appreciate a lot.
Thank you and have a great day all

    Hi there Helm,
Tks for your attention and reply to my issue!! Yesterday right after posting here (when we closed the doors and I could be able to work on it) I did get the latest one (8.00.2) and also set up manually the MTU value to 1500 (standard is automatic). I also unckeck the "anonymous internet request bock", "Multcast filter" and "Filter NAT forwarding", all of them were checked as standard. I also checked the "HTTPS Internet Access" (standard is only HTTP).
At a first moment I could get a very low sensitive better result (but the Lan was closed, so I had the entire 8Gb for my requests). I came back to work right now, and we have about 30 ppl in, mostly using the Internet, MSN and so... I am trying yo connect to Cabal Online, and GG-Esports (Warcraft, Dota) both of them giving the same problems as always... I am really getting tired and disapointed with LinkSys, I really though I would have much more than I am having right now.
Anyway I gonna keep trying each night to see what I cant get. I do post here If I find any solution (or if I really decided to move to another brand)
Thank you a lot and have a great night out there

  • Constant disconnects with Linksys BEFW11S4/Westell/Bellsouth Ultra DSL

I recently upgraded to the 6mb DSL service from Bellsouth.  Previously I had the 3mb.  Anyways everything was fine for sometime even with the faster service.  The last few weeks I have been having constant disconnects(several a day).  Naturally the wireless lite on my Linksys BEFW11S4 goes out each time.  I then un-power the router then re-power and I'm off and running again.  I am using a westell modem.  Bellsouth tells me that its not them since i do have an internet coneection and referred me to Linksys.  After several live chats(due to disconnects and then having to start tellin my issue all over again) they had me upgrade my firmware. Well did that and problem hasn't changed.  I've played with the different router channels and they don't seem to help as well.  Bellsouth told me that I had a static ip, so I tied setting up router that way, but then i got no connection.  Unil reently everything was fine, this just started!   Any help is greatly appreicated.  My 17 yr old daughter is going through internet withdraws upstairs!

If you are on DSL using a Westell Modem; make sure you ask your ISP to bridge the Modem first and use the PPPoE fucntion on your router. Change the LAN IP of the router to something else like 192.168.2.1 so it won't get a conflict with the IP of the Westell. Then if you are on cable, you can try adjusting the MTU size to 1492, 1400, 1300, or 576 then check which value would get your connection stable. You can reset your router right after you upgrade it also, then reconfigure it again. Hopefully yell be fine after that!

  • Constant disconnecting with my WRT120N

    Hi
I have a problem with my wrt120n. I'm having a constant disconnecting problem.
I don't have any problem with the wireless computers connected to the router but the wired one keep geeting disconnected. I'm loosing the internet many times a day on thiis one. Like I said the wireless is ok.
My old router on my computer ( wired) was working well before I installed the wrt120n.
    Can someone help me?
    Thank you!

This is a problem of the Linksys/Cisco WRT120N product itself.  The team from Cisco/Linksys is very irresponsible. Why i say so ?
The 802.11n signal is not certified to be supported but yet they have included this support in this router.  By doing so, it causes this related problem that most consumers must be facing now or in the past.  It is a shame that such a big company operates and sell their products this way.
The solution:  It does not have anything to do with MTU, beacon interval etc....  Just use Mixed BG wireless signal instead of
Wireless N only when you goes to Manual Setup.  I am sure that this solves the problem.

  • WRT160N V2 I can't online Game with friends on Wii

I am able to connect online and get online when I play my wii but anytime I try to online game with a friend it disconnects and I recieve the nintendo error code 86070.  I have worked through all the possible options through nintendo with no luck.  I need someone to give me step by step instructions on how to correct this issue.  Everyone is convinced I need to change some properties on my router but I am not sure how to do that.  The instructions all need to apply to a MAC computer.  Thank you please please help...I am about to throw this router out the window.

You need to do port forwarding on your router...
Open an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
Click on "Applications and Gaming" tab and then click on "Port Range Forwarding" subtab...
    1) On the first line in Application box type in ABC, in the start box type in the port number and End box type in the same port number entered in the start box, leave the protocol as both and under ip address type in 192.168.1.20 and check the enable box...click save settings...
NOTE : Port Number should be obtained from nintendo...
Follow the same step if you have multiple port numbers...Set the IP address for the ports to forward to the same as the Wii's static IP that you assigned in the previous step on this page.

  • Jerky Connection - Impossible to play online games...

I recently switched over to BT ADSL internet. My connection with my old ISP was fine and had no problems. However now my connection seems very inconsistent which is particularly noticeable during online games because data is constantly being transferred.
Instead of the game characters moving around smoothly as usual, they jerk from position to position. My ping is fine though (<20). I made a short video so this can be seen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoTqO6-oLfE
This problem is not constrained to just gaming though. Webpages sometimes seem to 'hang' until I refresh and suffer occasional short disconnects. If I ping google.co.uk for example, you can see various losses and lag spikes:
Here is the status of my line:
Is there anything un-usual with these results? Things I have already tried include:
    - Resetting Router
    - Different Router
    - Different Microfilters
    - Different Computers
    - Disabling Antivirus and Firewall
    - Port Forwarding
Using a wired connection with an iPlate and BT Home Hub 3.0. Im a new customer and clearly something is not right - playing games online is virtually impossible. Ive already tried BT online help but seems if I want any more advice than "reset the router" I have to call a premium rate number!? Does BT block any ports or throttle the connection at all? Would it be possible for a BT engineer to come and investigate the problem and maybe fit a new socket?
    Thanks for any advice, Ben.

your connection speed appears ok for your current attenuation but there are a lot of crc/hec errors and errors seconds for a conenction time of only 12hrs.  with number of changes you have tried each requiring a reset I am surprised that your noise margin is still only 4.5db
I see you use an iplate so must have an NTE5 master socket.  have you tried connecting to the test socket with a new filter and see if that helps. if you do conenct to test socket can you repost new stats please.
can you also run btspeedtester and post results
try quiet line test  dial 17070 option 2  should hear nothing and best with corded phone  if cordless then dull hum normal

  • How to create a turn-based multiplayer online game?

Hello. This is my first time here. I am familiar with programming games and have been doing so for 20 years. However, I'm completely new to using Java to do so. In the past, I wrote games in BASIC, Blitz, and C++ using DirectX. Being familiar with C/C++, the Java language syntax is not a hurdle for me.
I've never created a networking game, but I feel that if I tried to create one using one of the programming languages I already know that I would succeed at doing so. (I'm just trying to show that I feel confident in programming with the languages that i know)
The dilemma here is that someone else would like me to program a turn'based multiplayer game for them in Java.
I've downloaded the NetBeans 4.1 IDE and uncovered a lot of terms and such that I'm unfamiliar with.
What I'm looking for from you guys is an overview of what I need to do to achieve my ultimate goal of creating this online game.
As a reference, I need to create a game very similar to this one:
    http://www.tacticsarena.com/play/
Click on the "Launch Game: Tactics Arena Online" link to see the game.
Create a new account to play (accounts are free).
Upon starting the NetBeans IDE, I found that I could create several different types of projects. I guess first of all, I need to know what kind of project is best suited to make this type of game.
To name a few, I have to select from:
    Java Application
Java Class Library (is this an Applet?)
    Web Application
    Enterprise Application
    EJB Module
Then I guess I would like to know if any of the above projects would be used to make the clients interface or the server side software or both? Or do I need to use some other kind of software/programming language/etc. to create the server side? (As a side note, typically what kind of Operating system would the server be using? I ask because I may set one up myself for testing purposes.)
Somewhere I came upon the term 'Servlet'. Is this some kind of Java server application? Do I need/want to be using this?
As you can see, I'm very lost at where to begin. I'm not at all unfamiliar with programming. I'm just unfamiliar with Java.
    WolRon

    Hi WolRon
I am in the process of learning Java myself and from what i have read, you have a long road ahead of you!
To start this Project the following will be essential for you to know:
Applets - if this is going to an online game
Multiple Threads - for the Server side
Swing - for the GUI on both sides
AWT - help work with the user input (mouseListeners, buttonListeners, etc)
    And knowledge of a database.
those are the most obvious things that you will need to understand.
I strongly suggest buying a Java book from which you need to start at the beginning. Although the concept of OOP is the same through most languages Java has terms - as do all languages- that will be different from the other languages. Starting at the beginning will be beneficial to your Java coding future.
    Good luck.
