Firefox constantly stalling...

I tend to have many tabs open at once and when I load streaming videos on seperate tabs it will begin to stall.  I get the spinning round chart icon instead of my mouse and the only thing I can do is force quit.  I know it's probably because I'm loading too much at once but I guess I am impatient.  Could it be a memory issue as well?  Its about a 3-4 yr old macbook if that helps.

I am guessing that you are running out of memory. Open up the activity monitor and see how much memory you are using when you have all those tabs open.

After the next updating of the browser to 13th version such problems have occured :
    1. At each start of Firefox constantly there comes a window of check of additions on compatibility, that on the previous versions was not observed.
    2. To the homepage at start the page has added (http://www.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/13.0/whatsnew/?oldversion=rv:12.0) or "Ура! У вас стоит последняя версия Firefox."Besides in options the page is not changed.
I.e. all the things happen after Firefox is updated, but only now it is constant.
    WinXP SP3

It is also possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the files extensions.* (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.
New files will be created when required.

If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to check if there is a compatibility update available.

why is the new firefox constantly blinking on my screen? everything else is fine but firefox now blinks and is unusable in 4.0

Hi DGuerra, based on a past thread, the missing comments may be related to using avast! and its browser add-on(s).
Firefox is so easy to customize that it's not really surprising to find differences between two systems. These can relate to the menu choices (orange Firefox button or classic menu bar), toolbar layouts, and of course, add-ons.
If you have a preference for one setup versus another, hopefully these articles can equalize some of those layout issues:
    * [[Display the Firefox button menu instead of the menu toolbar]]
    * [[Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars]]
You can compare extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions.
Perhaps you can get the two side-by-side to make it easier, or to extract a text list, you can use the troubleshooting information page. Either:
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information
    * type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
The button in the upper left corner "Copy text to clipboard" will grab the configuration information from entire page.

I have a new MacBook Pro. I am using firefox version 7.0.1, but my homepage is set to google. Firefox constantly keeps opening new tabs to its own homepage by itself. How can I disable this feature.

    Hi [email protected]
If you have set Google to be your homepage, that should be the first one to appear. Are you seeing the Firefox home page when you open new tabs? New tabs should be blank by default. The only reason I've seen Firefox open new tabs with Firefox data on it is after an upgrade of the product.

  • Firefox constantly runs in the background even when closed

    Hi
I have Firefox 3.6.8 running on Windows Vista.
I have found that Firefox constantly runs in the background even when i have just booted up the computer or when i have closed it.
Firefox seems to constantly run with 5000-20000 K bytes in the memory.
When i have Firefox running to look at webpages, there are two processes running. When i close Firefox there is one process running. If i end the process using the task manager, it only takes seconds before it starts to run again.
I know this isnt normal because i keep a good eye on the processes running on my computer. So unless the latest version of Firefox requires this process running all the time, it looks like i have a probably.
Ive scanned my computer with zonealarm, avast, superantispyware and spybot to scan my computer for viruses. One of the pieces of software found a virus and it deleted it successfully.
Im not too sure if this is a virus that is hiding in my system or whether its part of the latest version of Firefox.
Firefox isnt showing the usual signs of a virus. As in it doesnt try to redirect me to random websites and it doesnt try to get me to download something.
I hope someone can help me please.
    Rob

After talking to someone very helpful on the live chat support.
It appears like i have a virus that is very good at hiding from detection from anti-virus/spyware software.
No idea what intentions the virus has as its not showing any sort of virus like behaviour.
I called the old installation a different name and closed the Firefox process. A few seconds later, instead of a Firefox process starting again a different executable started.

  • Weird series of events (daemons causing firefox to stall?)

Im not sure if that's the case. Here's what happened:
I was loading a page in firefox and had put the other computer on the LAN to sleep. I forgot that my computer was connected to it so I suppose this started because my computer was trying to find the connection what had been lost (since I didn't unmount the network volume before putting the other machine to sleep)
So, before I got the standard error (that the server has disconnected) Firefox completely stalled. I couldn't even kill it. I tried $ kill -9 #### at the command line and still nothing (I know of kill -15, but my first experience wasn't a good one so I avoid it)
I ran $ top -o cpu and it said that the two programs taking up the majority of my cpu (note: im on an old, slow G4) were two decidedly daemons called WindowServe and loginwindow (the word gets cut off by the column so thats just what is on-screen). WindowServe was taking 20-25% while loginwindow took 55% of my cpu! FIFTY-FIVE!
My entire CPU hovered in the mid-80% range, so it's not like the entire CPU was being hoarded. But Firefox continued to stall, and killing it wouldn't work. Then I noticed that when trying to use $ ps aux to get the pid for firefox, it printed the usual info but first was preceded by this error:
****-init: could not get current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: Permission denied. When I tried running this using SUDO (even though I'm an admin) I got an error: sudo: cannot get working directory.
As soon as the error message about the server disconnecting appeared, I clicked "disconnect" (since I wasn't trying to reconnect) and Firefox was killed and everything is back to normal.
It seems very odd that it took that much CPU for the daemon to determine that the server was diconnected, as well as causing Firefox to completely lock up (if you put the mouse over it, you got the spinning colour ball).
Any ideas? I dont think I can necessarily find a "solution" since I don't have an ongoing problem here, but if this is a hint that something is wrong, I'd like to know.

Is it possible that in your Terminal window, you'd changed directories to the (lately) mounted volume? That would definitely explain the "can't get working directory" messages from both 'ps aux' (which is perfectly valid, BTW) and 'sudo'.
Are any of the Firefox directories (the per-User info, or perchance the Firefox application itself) on the (lately) mounted volume? That would explain the failure of Firefox to exit until the O/S finished figuring out that the link was gone...

  • Firefox constantly hangs/freezes/stops etc. What's going on?

For the last 2-3 weeks, I've been experiencing massive issues with Firefox.
    I use a desktop with Windows 7, 64-bit.
I originally started with Firefox 5, and then a week or so before the release of Firefox 6 I started experiencing these issues. I was ecstatic when I found the release of Firefox 6 two days early, and for maybe a day or so, it was perfect before the problems started again.
Problems include: Firefox constantly hangs, freezes, not responding, stops loading etc. Whatever you want to call it, it does it randomly for any reason. It's not set off by trying to access a particular website or whatever, it could just be trying to open in a new tab or window. It even happens with simple things like typing or scrolling down a page. When it freezes it freezes my entire system until it gets going again. Sometimes it will even freeze when the window is minimized and I'm not currently using Firefox for anything.
I've tried scanning for viruses, clearing settings and stored files, uninstalling and re-installing, disabling any and all add-ons, even down grading all the way back to 3.6 and still nothing works. I've also tried all the "trouble-shooting solutions" I've come across, and most of them involve add-ons I've never even heard of, let alone use, so these are useless to me.
I had issues with a non-responsive script at start up, but after disabling a Java add-on this stopped, however the constant freezing remains.
Like I said, it's been happening for a few weeks, no matter what version of Firefox I use.
I know I'm the millionth person to complain about this; I've read all the other threads, but nothing is being done about this issue.
I've used Firefox for 8 years, but this problem is so infuriating I'm ready to call it quits and move to a different browser, which I don't want to do because I hate all the rest.
Is there anything else I can do to solve this, or are we just going to have to wait for the developers to 'maybe' get around to fixing it?

    Thanks for the reply!
I have noticed the high memory usage. And when I was having these issues I tried to install 3.6.18 and it wouldn't run.
But I had problems with my computer and sent it away for repair and now I'm running 6.0.2 with none of the previous problems I experienced.

  • Need help with Firefox constantly crashing. Here is one of my crash reports 9df1066e-d25d-44fa-b05f-7d22e2110713. They all have this signature "_de_casteljau."

Firefox constantly crashing no matter what site I go to. Here are my crash reports - you can see the times and dates are pretty frequent.
Only 1 module doesn't have a version number, but doing google search there are ton of results for this file.
Google searched, checked for updates for firefox, add-ons, java, and flash..i've added these add-ons AdBlock, IE Tab, Webmail, and a theme(LavaFox V1 1.3.3).
    Ran virus scans and nothing.

The crashes seem to be related to garbage collection (i.e. cleanup 'unused' memory, but in this case the memory may still be in use) and such crashes are hard to diagnose.
Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.<br /><br />

  • Firefox suddenly stopped responding. I couldn't close Firefox, then restarted my computer. When I did, Firefox constantly gives "Not Responding"; will not start. I tried reinstall, and am getting a stalled installation. What can I do?

    OS: Windows XP
Numerous crashes out of Firefox in recent uses, before this latest catastrophic crash.
    Installation is also stalled.
I cannot open any Firefox window and have it find the internet now, so am stuck using Internet Explorer to log in here.
Past crashes have been about once every 18 hours, not including some crashes of Flash roughly every 3-5 days.
Should add that I couldn't kill any Firefox process using the Windows Task Manager, which is a first. And, (re-)install hung for more than an hour now, not proceeding.
Norton scan showing no viruses, and it has the latest definitions. This seems confined to a problem in Firefox.
Trying again to install and get this running, trying to open Firefox again fails, using what I presume was the latest previous install. I can't re-install still.
I did briefly see a program called SysFader trying to run when I was opening the Firefox window (unsuccessfully), but just did a search in my hard drive for a file or folder named SysFader and there are no matches. I don't know if they are related.
Nearly a day later and no apparent progress.

  • Firefox constantly freezes on my Mac, although I've installed the latest version and tried all suggested fixes - without success.

I used Firefox up to version 3.5 and it worked well. But ever since, FF has frozen as soon as I've opened a webpage other than Google. FF even freezes when I'm in Mozilla's help pages !
I have trashed and reinstalled several times, updated constantly as suggested. I'm now using (or trying to use) version 25. No success.
I have done everything that was suggested :
    - trashed and reinstalled ( several times over the years, to see if new versions of FF would work)
    - restarted FF in safe mode
    - tweaked the profile as recommended
    - I've painstakingly checked that all my plug-ins etc were up to date. They are.
None of these solutions have worked. As I have written more than once, none of them should be necessary : Firefox should "just work". After all, other browsers do - I use Safari and Chrome, for instance, as well as SeaMonkey. Does any
    one know what's happening ?
I'm now running Mac OS 10.9.

A moderator (AliceWyman, whom I thank for her post) suggests I reset Firefox. I've done that, more than once.
The problem remains. And so does my question : why does Firefox keep on hanging/freezing ?
Why should fixes be necessary? Mozilla, in its Firefox page, generously offers the browser free, and users assume that it will, simply, work. In my case, it doesn't.
And as I've said: I've tried a whole range of fixes and workarounds (that aren't necessary with other browsers) and they haven't worked. If my iMac can handle all the other browsers with no problem, this indicates that the computer works, and that the other browsers do too. So this problem seems to be a specific Firefox one.
As I've already said, I could just give up and use Safari, Chrome, Chromium, SeaMonkey, Maxthon, or Slimboat, for instance.
But it irks me that FF, with such a good reputation (it's the third most widely used browser), should behave in this way.
"Different by design", says its webpage. Well, it's certainly different. Can anyone help? I've been asking these questions, trying "fixes", trashing and clean-reinstalling for about a week now.
