Firefox slow start trying to resolve local hostname

When starting Firefox it tries to resolve my hostname, but since it is not resolvable from everywhere it takes a lot of time before it actually gives up (5 times the lookup timeout).
Having a record in hosts file does not solve it.
Is there a way to disable attempts to resolve my hostname and just use the corresponding ip from hosts file?

Hi finitarry,
thanks for your attention.
The problem is not with resolving sites or resolver in general - there everything is ok and hosts file is used as expected.
The thing is on startup before actually launching the gui. It feels like the lookup is somehow hardcoded there - strace shows
that it opens a socket with nonblock option set, connects it to my DNS, does sendto for query, and then timeouts waiting for readable sockets
poll([{fd=11, events=POLLIN}], 1, 5000) = 0 (Timeout)
and repeats it several times.
So though the socket is set non blocking that part of code can actually block in poll(), and I guess it would be nice if it could perform this lookup in parallel with starting the gui.
The server that used to hold my NS records is temporarily down, and it is natural for queries to last forever till timeout, but hosts file always used to save it.
So I just wonder if it is a bug or a feature.

when I started firefox.
I disabled my second monitor. Now I dont get the RANDR message but start of firefox is still very slow.

Wow!
That solved it!
Thank you.
I moved .mozilla, (new empty folder was created when firefox started). Then I restored my bookmarks from my backup.
Now firefox "fires" up very fast (sorry for my attempt to a joke).

• Why has Firefox suddenly started trying to close everything when I try to close a preview pane of a single, seperate webpage??

Since the last update, everytime I try to close a firefox window from the preview, firefox wants to close ALL of my windows and tabs. I just want to close a pop up, I don't think it's unreasonable to be able to do that without actually switching to it. I haven't had any problem with this in the past.

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

• Since few days, Firefox crashes when trying to open local php files - without using localhost . It shoudn't. I tried to unsinstall everything and reinstall. But it didn't work. I use a mac osX 10..6

I'm a beginner web developper. When I try to open php files, Firefox crashes and open millons of new firefox windows . I have no choice other than forcing Firefox to quit. When I use the localhost adress, it's Ok. But because I usually open the file directly from a folder in my HDD, (it's faster to dothis way) transforming it after with the localhost/~username/file ... it' s quite irritant.

Hi.
I tried logging in as a different user in the OS and that didn't work.
Do you mean that Safari crashed there as well?
If so, that's an indication that the startup disk needs repairing.

• Slow start up and not responding Firefox 3.6.13

Slow start up and not responding when I open Firefox 3.6.13. As long as 1 minute. I tried in save mode and it doesn't seem to happen. I used McAfee before and now use Norton IS with Real Time Malwarebytes. Still the same speed opening up, so the virus software is not causing the problem I think. I disable a lot of the add-on and still the same problem. Any suggestions?
Vista OS

If other softwares runs fast and smooth it's obvious that it's a Firefox-problem.
Probably because of a corrupt profile.
I have done a "checklist" you could follow here: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/667207#answer-124643
Regarding slow start up, it's a common and old problem.
Not all FF-users experience it as a problem, but I used to belong to them who suffered.
If your cold start up (the first start after a Windows boot) is really slow, but a warm start (the second time you restart Firefox) is much faster - then I think I can help you.
Try my own simple solution here: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/762446#answer-119951
I run on Win 7 64-bit and on Firefox 4.0 betas, but that doesn't matter as it works also on older Windows and Firefox versions.
Regarding your anti-virus software. I have tried the most of them. The best tradeoff is in my opinion Eset Smart Security (NOD32).
If you want to try it: http://www.eset.com/download/free-trial/international
I hope this will help you :)

I had same problem where Firefox 3.6.8 would not start or open. Spent many hours trying different things to fix it. Uninstall of previous version and reinstall did not make any difference. Finally, after uninstalling Firefox, I searched for Firefox folders and files on my computer, deleted and removed all Firefox folders and files - deleted anything and everything related to Firefox so that it will be as if I was going to download Firefox for the first time ever. Then, using another browser, I downloaded Firefox 3.6.8 and installed it. It could be that some Add-Ons or something else from the older version of Firefox or profile was interfering with the new one. It was easier to delete remove everything and install all over again clean than to figure out which part was causing the problem.
Keep in mind, when you delete all Firefox folders and files from your computer, you are deleting all your bookmarks and all your Add-ons. If you want to keep those bookmarks, you might want to save the URLs someplace safe to bookmark them again before deleting them. You need to re-install the Add-ons also. Upon installation, it asks if you want to import bookmarks and settings from another browser or settings you might have. I imported them from my other browser. Now, Firefox works. I also installed up-to-date Add-ons.
I hope this helps. Always keep more than one browser functioning on your computer, just in case one fails.

You may need to use Safe Mode (click on "Safe Mode" and read) to localize the problem. Firefox Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode that disables Extensions and some other features of Firefox. If you are using a theme, switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes <u>before</u> starting Safe Mode. When entering Safe Mode, do not check any items on the entry window, just click "Continue in Safe Mode". Test to see if the problem you are experiencing is corrected.
See:
Troubleshooting extensions and themes
Troubleshooting plugins
Basic Troubleshooting
If the problem does not occur in Safe-mode then disable all of your Extensions and Plug-ins and then try to find which is causing it by enabling <u>one at a time</u> until the problem reappears. <u>You MUST close and restart Firefox after EACH change</u> via File > Restart Firefox (on Mac: Firefox > Quit). You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window.

• When i press the firefox button it trying to start but then it fails and then in the task maneger it is running. pls help me, this is a big problem for me.

When I try to start firefox it starts to open but then suddenly dies everything. it appears in Task Manager that it is running. I have tried everything but nothing works. so please help me fix this problem so I can continue to use firefox.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

• Firefox 4.0 slow start & stop

Firefox 4.0 slow starting up!
Firefox is very slow shutting down.

In Firefox 4.0 you can configure the loopback address by checkmarking "Use system proxy settings" which is actually the default, in Tools | Options | Advanced | Network (tab), then click the Settings button.
I don't know of a firewall which doesn't allow you to configure it in different ways though. Which one is it if you don't mind me asking?

• Firefox very very slow starting

Every version higher than 3.6 takes a very long time to start. I have checked my anti-virus and firewall settings and they are all good. This problem does not occur with 3.6.

Hi BCmorganti,
Have you looked at our performance troubleshooting section? There is a lot of good information in there that should help.
I'd try starting Firefox in Safe Mode too. If you don't have the issue while all of your add-ons, extensions, and themes are disabled, you can try adding them back in one by one until you find the culprit. You should look at the Extensions and Themes troubleshooting guide and the Troubleshooting plugins article as well.
You could also try Creating a new profile.
Hopefully this helps!

Dear Firefox:
I am not amused with the pac-man music. I spent the entire trying to find a virus on my computer. I might have tolerated this as an April Fool's joke, but this "celebration" was completely unnecessary!
And to others trying to fix the problem ... I just uninstalled Cool Previews and that did the trick. No more bat-shit-crazy pac-man music.

• When trying to send a link, firefox will start opening new blank tabs and continue until I shutdown my computer.

This started about a month ago. When try to send a link from a page Firefox will start opening untitled tabs this continues even though I try to close Firefox. It just keeps going until I'm forced to shut down my computer. Just today the same thing happened just clicking a link within Firefox. It seems to have become very unstable.

See Firefox keeps opening many tabs or windows
You can have infinite tabs opening if you have selected Firefox as the application to handle a file if you get an Open with download window.<br />
Firefox should not be selected as the application to handle a file and you have to remove the action that is associated with that file type.
See also http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions ("File handling in Firefox 3 and SeaMonkey 2" and "Reset Download Actions")
Set that action in Tools > Options > Applications to 'Always Ask' or delete the file mimeTypes.rdf in the Profile Folder to reset all actions.

As mentioned earlier, this warning is on all three of the MBX/CAS servers. The external e-mail address vary.
I've used the Get-MessageTrackingLog to debug, and I can see that this error comes when an internal user sends a "Meeting Forward Notification" to an external e-mail address. Exchange tries to resolve the external e-mail address in Active Directory
