Firewire Problems with Final Cut Studio 2

I recently made the leap and purchased a Macbook Pro and FCS2. But I have not been able to capture in Final Cut 6 from my Canon XL2. The capture window tells it is not reading timecode. Now if i use iMovie I can capture just fine, but Final Cut just won't read from the camera. I also purchased an Edirol FA-66 for some ADR and foley work on a project I have, but Soundtrack Pro won't read from it either and just like the Final Cut/iMovie scenario the interface can used thru Garageband with no problem other that latency delays.
Is there some firewire menu in System Setting or something else I am missing? I have used both pieces of gear of G5 setups witht he previous version of FCP with no problem but I am totally lost with the new MacBook Pro and FCS 2...
Please, help me.
MacBook Pro 2.33 Ghz Intel Core Duo 2   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   2 gig ram, FCP Studio 2, XL2 and Edirol FA-66

With the Cannon have you tried the obvious and used the Firewire Basic setup? I assume that FCP6 still uses that .. and are you plugging the Cannon directly into the book's FW port .. not daisy chaining .. that's an issue with Cannons I believe

  • MacBook Pro Problem with Final Cut Studio

For some reason Final Cut Studio will not run on my MacBook Pro 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. It loads then disappear. The only version that worked was 5.0 but felt very slow so im thinking it was using rosetta. After reinstalling OSX hoping that would help. Still that didnt help. I installed 5.1 then used Apple Software Update to download all the update. All update was install but still nothing works. Well if this post seems similiar to someone else post please point me to the right place. any answer will help thanks. I've read the support CPU but didnt see any information on whether it support the Core 2 Duo.

no reason it shouldn't work, and work very well at that.
do none of the FCS apps work, or is it just FCP?
if you have just finished a full reinstall, then for good measure you should run Repair Permissions from /Applications/Utilities/Dissk Utility
it may also be that the preference files are corrupted (try FCP Rescue http://fcprescue.andersholck.com/ )
also try the prebinding thing ... see this post by Brian Conner http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3961108&#3961108 or the apple technote http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93984

  • G5 Power PC vs Imac...which is better for editing with final cut studio 2?

    This is my present computer:
    iMac 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo (2008 model)
4 gigs of 800 mhz ddr2 sdram (this is the max ram for this computer! )
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512 MB
Hard drive: 465 gig (I use mainly external drives for editing)
I use this mainly for video editing with final cut studio 2.
    Rendering in compressor takes forever!!!
A friend suggested I pick up a used G5 Power PC.
I found this one, here are the specs:
APPLE POWER MAC G5 PowerPC DUAL CORE (2 x 2 GHZ)
    System Mac OSX 10.5.8
    RAM 12 GB
1 Hard drive of 160 Gb
    Superdrive 16x CD/DVD/DL DVD (32x)
Video card NVIDIA GeForce 6600 (VRAM 256 Mb)
    3 open PCI-Express expansion slots.
    1x FireWire 800
    3x FireWire 400
    4x USB 1 and 2
    2x Ethernet Port
    2x Displays ports
Is this insanity or a smart move to move over to the older G5.
According to my friend, the older G5s are much better at processing video.
Is a dual 2 GHZ processor enough or would I need a 2.3 or 2.5?
OR is there another option that someone might be able to suggest?
I would be so appreciative of any opinions regarding this issue.
    Thanks in advance.
    Bill

Save your pennies and look for a refurbished or used MacPro. Early 2008 or newer 8 core machines w/8GB of RAM running 4 instances in QMaster will chew through material.
Beyond running compressor, it is just a better all round machine for editing video.
    • it has multiple internal drive bays which run via SATA connections - much faster than the FW800 limits of the iMac for external drives
    • it has 3 slots which give you the option of an i/o card from AJA, Blackmagic or Matrox so that you can actually monitor your video properly as well as ingest high end formats
    • the slots give you the ability to connect esata raids for even higher data speeds
    • you have much greater flexibility with computer monitors
    • you have much greater RAM capacity
    and so on ...

  • Is it possible to use Speech Recognition with Final Cut Studio?

Is it possible to use Speech Recognition with Final Cut Studio?
Using either Speech, AppleScript, Automator or a 3rd party app
like iListen, can I enable Final Cut Studio apps to respond
    to voice commands?
(e.g. I say "I" in Final Cut Pro and it sets an in point)
    thanks

Yes, I wish "Make it really good" and "Fix my rough cut"
    were commmands too
I did hear from the folks at iListen that
they are planning on releasing a ScriptPak
for Final Cut Studio next year which could be
    cool
and that yes, iListen has some capability to
integrate Speech Recognition with Final Cut,
guess I need to give it a try for a test ride

  • Is Quicktime Pro included with Final Cut Studio?

Wikipedia's article on Quicktime Pro says that a Quicktime Pro license comes with Final Cut Studio. Is that true?
I have OS X 10.5.8 and FCS 2, but I can't even tell if I have Quicktime Pro. I see Quicktime Player in my applications folder (version 7.6.6), but I don't see Quicktime Pro.
Is Wikipedia right that I got a QT Pro license with FCS? If so, how do I activate it?
If not, do I just purchase the upgrade from the Apple Store? How do I install/activate the upgrade it?
    Thanks

I'd like to re-open this topic. I'm not sure that I have QT Pro either. I recently upgraded the OS to 10.6.4--which included a new QT Player [10.0 (114)]. None of the pro features are there--or the old preferences (or the QT System Prefs). I don't use QT Pro features much, and it's only been about a month since the upgrade, so I didn't notice until now. I used to have it. Did I miss something?

  • Graphic problem with Final cut pro X

    Hello
Since some days I have graphical problems, it seems it is related to final cut pro X (10.0.8), all other programms are running well.
When I import events to my project the graphic is ok:
After modification, example: here stabilization on, I have some colored pixels in the preview:
After this happens once, I found some colored pixel also in other programs or on the background picture.
I'm not sure if I have a problem with final cut or with the graphic card. When I use my iMac without final cut, I found no problems
Can anybody help me? Thank you

    Thank you for you answer.
I have 12 GB Memory and Final Cut Pro X was working properly until now.
The problem occure already at the preview windows, as soon as I close Final cut the graphic background looks good again.
I found that I have a similar problem also with iMovie, so I think it is maybe a hardware and not a software problem.
The hardware test does not show any problems, do you know another method to test the graphic card?

  • Help please importing mpeg files to be edited with Final Cut Studio

Hey everyone, new to the video editing thing. I have a JVC GY-HM100U Pro HD camcorder and a MacBook Pro 5,1 with 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 4 GB 1067 MHz DPR3, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M & NVIDIA GeForce 9600MGT running OSX 10.5.8. Have recorded footage in mpeg4 and want to now edit using Final Cut Pro 7. Have downloaded Quicktime Pro and am still getting a "the movie could not be opened when trying to import the mp4 file. The movie contains some invalid data" window when trying to open the mpeg4 file. I have also downloaded DivX, FF Player, & Handbrake if these help convert to another supported file format. Please help!

That camera is promoted on the JVC website as being Final Cut Pro compatible.
Have you tried to import the clips via Log & Transfer?
You might also want to read up on the [workflow for that type of camera|http://documentation.apple.com/en/finalcutpro/professionalformatsandwork flows/#chapter=6%26section=0].
    Have downloaded Quicktime Pro....
QuickTime Pro is installed automaticallly with Final Cut Studio. No need to buy it again.
I have also downloaded DivX, FF Player, & Handbrake...
That software is all pretty much useless for working with Final Cut Studio.
MPEG Streamclip is free and much better.

  • Chroma Key problems with Final Cut Express 4

I had no problems with the Chroma Key in Final Cut Express 4 before. It was working perfectly fine untill I brought anther Macbook Pro last year in August. I installed it on the new computer and then the Chroma Key didn't work. Final Cut opens up and the other filters work fine but I can't get the chroma key to work. Any possible reasons?

I am experiencing an interseting problem with Final Cut Express on OSX Lion.  I teach in a Mac Lab at my school.  Today I was trying to teach Chroma Keying- which I have been doing for years - but for some reason the color selector would just not key out anything.   I tried it on four or five different machines, and it turns out that ONLY my machines that were running OSX Leopard would allow the Chroma Key to function.  I have two machines running Lion and the Chroma Key would not work on EITHER of them.  I followed the exact same steps, and all of the settings were identical.  The hardware was also the exact same package from machine to machine.  I feel like there must be an issue with OSX Lion that is breaking the Chroma Key filter.  Can anyone help?

  • Manuals Included with Final Cut Studio

How many physical manuals are included with Final Cut Studio? I heard there were 4 for Final Cut Pro and 1 for Color. What about the other programs (Compressor, Motion, Soundtrack, DVD Studio)?

hey there bgecawich & welcome to Discussions,
there are 4 volumes for FCS2 User Manual:
    1-Interface, Set-up & Input
    2-Editing
    3-Audio Mixing & Effects
    4-Media Management & Output
there is a separate User Manual for Color.
    good luck.

  • How different when i5 and i7 work with Final Cut Studio?

27-inch models only, one of the following:
2.66GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor with 8MB shared L3 cache; Turbo Boost dynamic performance up to 3.2GHz
2.8GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with 8MB shared L3 cache; Turbo Boost dynamic performance up to 3.46GHz; Hyper-Threading for up to eight virtual cores
May I get the "up to 2.3x faster performance with Final Cut Studio" with i5?
    Thanks advanced.

It looks very convincing to pay more for i7. Thanks a lot.
I agree, and also get 8G or more of RAM like Switch900 suggests. You can save money on that by buying it from a third-party vendor.

  • New imac with FInal cut studio?

    Hi everyone,
I am looking at getting one of the new imacs for video editing (Final cut studio 2). The specs for final cut are 4 gig of ram (for some applications in the bundle).
I wanted to know, do I have to buy my ram from apple when I buy my mac, or can i upgrade it myself? And if so, would the imac be upto the job? From what I can see there isn't much difference between the new imac and the macbook pro (which is what I was going to get).
Also, what if the difference in (laymans terms, please) in the intel duo and the intel duo extreme? Is it a big difference for editing, or not worth the extra money?
Also (apologies for all the questions, i have no where else to get the answers) - can you attatch another display - such as a monitor or laptop to the new macs for editing?
    Thanks.
    Lawrence

as with all iMac and Macbook computers, there is a complete lack of expansion capabilities beyond a single firewire bus.
most potential buyers rationlize their purchasing of a lessor machine based upon length of project, type of video, hoping to get by, pick your poison. this is short-sighted as it's irrelevant. video, no matter which flavor, is processor intensive.
what else will you do with your computer? will you hook up a printer, a scanner, external harddrives, a card reader, a tape machine, perhaps rs422 control? how will you monitor hdv properly? how will you monitor audio? will you wander into surround sound mixing?
the iMac is a great computer but beware, just because others have used it successfully doesn't mean it's the shoe that will fit your foot the best. as i said, the iMac is woefully inadequate for any sort of expansion beyond a single firewire bus.
    buyer beware.

  • Need Help, crazy HDV Problem with Final Cut

Hi Guys, first thanks for looking my problem.
I have a new Macbook Pro 2,4Ghz with 4GB RAM and Leopard 10.5.4
So also I have Final Cut Studio 1 updated on 5.1.4.
My problem: As i captured HDV Material i saw in Quicktime, that there are many fragments, more terrible then hdv compression. In Final Cut 5 the same. So i was looking for an other Mac, so i've found an G5 also with Final Cut 5.1.4 and Tiger OS. But there i saw nothing, no fragments, all good(same material).
So i think its a problem with between macbook pro, leopard, hdv and final cut 5.1.4
Can anyone help me, im also able to give you a screenshot with the fragmets. There are very strong to see in the grey colors.
    Thanks
