Firmware password and non-US keyboards

Hello everyone, I decided to post it here for your information. Anyone who have plans to set a firmware password to his Mac, and doesn't have a US keyboard, BE CAREFUL with the inclusion of symbols of its own keyboard layout (for example, I'm italian and so I've: "èàùéòì" but also "@" in different positions unlike the US layout). That because, as shown here: http://goo.gl/VJtOzA the system, during the setup will follow the classic layout of your keyboard (if you are Italian, "it-IT"), BUT during the insertion process it loads the default layout ("en-US") and so the symbols will be located in different places.
I have no idea why Apple did not warn of this thing in the process of setting!

Hopefully the following might help clarify my response:
If I had a work-around for this problem (other than the obvious "don't do that"), I'd have provided it.
If Apple were likely to see a problem report here, I'd have not passed it along to the Apple folks manually and directly.  They've received and acknowledged the report.
If Apple were likely to see and act on problem reports and postings here, I'd have not suggested it be reported formally.
Unless the reports are in the Apple bug-tracking systems, I'd not expect to see the reports particularly considered.
Botching the keyboard handing for a password prompt is not something I'd consider appropriate behavior.  I'd consider it a bug.
Whether  considers this a bug and worth pushing out a fix to the firmware and/or the bootstrap, I don't know.
For what it's worth, an article on Mac firmware and password processing from 2001 is exceedingly unlikely to be relevant to any current Mac systems. PowerPC (PPC) processors were used in 2001, and with completely different firmware (Open Firmware / OpenBoot, IIRC) than is used with the current EFI-based firmware present within all of the Intel-based Mac systems.  Open Firmware / OpenBoot is very different from EFI / UEFI firmware.
I didn't follow the original shortened link, as I didn't know where that is going.  One of the available link unshorteners translates that shortened link as a MacWorld article for OS X 10.1 which references Open Firmware password handling.   In summary, it would appear that somebody else has created the same basic bug, a ~dozen years on.

I have got a Activation Lock on my iPhone and I need to get it activated. I don't know what Apple ID I was using with my iPhone. It shows as U***@h******.uk which is too short to be my email address. I have reset all my Apple ID passwords and none are activating my iPhone. I have also been into the apple store and they have tried to find out the Apple ID my iPhone was using but this was not successful. The serial number of my iPhone is: C32JN641DTWF

You are going to need to change the email address you use with your old ID. Once you have got access to your old account you will then log into both accounts at the same time on your Mac and transfer your data to a single account. We can do this later, but need you to get access to your old account first.

  • NCS and non US keyboard layout - Guest - Email ID and @

    Problem:
The problem is that we cannot email the Guest Account Details to the guest, because the popup where we fill in the email of the guest - Email ID - Does not recognise the @ when using non US Keyboard layout.
When i use my local keyboard layout (Danish) and press AltGr+2 (this is the keyboard "shortcut" for @) it writes nothing.
When i switch to US keyboard layout and press Shift+2 it writes @ fine.
    Version:
Tried this in both 1.0 and I just upgraded to 1.1 and it is still the same.
Does anyone know of a open BugID that addresses the following problem on the NCS Lobby Ambasador page ?

    Thomas,
Have you tried it from different machines and different OSes and confirmed that the common denominator is NCS and not your specific KB/OS setup?

  • EFi/Firmware Password and Recovery Partition

Before I get my Macbook Air, I want to know, does having an efi password set prevent you from booting with cmd+r without the password.
I already know that Cmd+s, Cmd+opt, cmd+opt+p+r, do not work.
It would be great if someone would just test it on their Macbook Air running Osx Lion with a firmware password set, and tell me if the Unlock dialog comes up.
    Thanks!

I'm pretty tired but when I had Firmware pw set, it boots instantly into your login dialogue and then proceeds to load (or not load) the OS. So unless I'm being re.tarded, as soon as you enter in the firmware password, you're effectively starting from where you'd be if you didn't have the password set.
To your question, I'm 95% sure that yes, you would be prevented from getting around the firmware password. I don't think you could...? I'd test it for you but my recovery partition has melted into the lba - apparently....

  • After IOS 8 upgrade, when I turn my phone on, it asks for a password and none of my passwords seem to work. I have already managed to update my password.

I upgraded to IOS 8 and now when I turn on the phone, it is asking for a password and I have used every password I have used previously but the phone is not accepting the last one I upgraded to. I did a reset of my password but now have to wait 20 more minutes before I can try to get into my phone. I have no idea as to what to do. Thanks to anyone who can help.

Could it be your email password, or your exchange pass code ? If that does not work you may need to restore the iPad. Good luck.

  • My Mac Mini has a password and a wireless keyboard and mouse that have been working well with bluetooth until two days ago when my keyboard stopped responding. Since I have a password on Mac Mini, I am unable to access settings to pair Mac Mini. Thanks.

Can anyone help me pair my BT keyboard with my password protected Mac Mini? I am currently unable to log in to Mac Mini since the BT keyboard has become unpaired.  The wireless mouse is working.  I also have an I Pad and an I Phone as well as Mac TV.
    Please help!!
    Thank you.
    Gail

I had exactly the same issue, that the Apple wireless keyboard became unpaired, and I couldn't get past the password-protected log-in screen, because I didn't have a wired keyboard laying around.
    OK folks,
Discovered by trial and error that it was the wireless mouse (not an Apple brand) that was preventing the keyboard from pairing, even though it's not a bluetooth mouse...
    Here's the steps I used...
    1. Disconnected the USB  mouse cord from the Mac Mini.
    2. Turned off the Apple wireless keyboard from switch on the back.
    3. Turn Mac Mini off, then back on.
    4. Waited for it to boot up as far as  the password-protected screen.
    5. Turned on the Apple wireless keyboard, waited for it to stop blinking, indicating (hoping) that it paired        up.
    6. And voila... was able to then type in the password...
    7. Then plugged the non-Apple wireless mouse sensor  cord back into the Mac Mini's USB port
I also immediately went in to the MacMini's Sharing options and set that up for remote management in case something else happens down the road for other problems...
Thanks though to all who suggested solutions... they may come in handy in the future.
    Hope this helps someone else...

  • Java 6 and non standard keyboards

I'm using a Java 6 app on my MacBook Pro. I have a microsoft external keyboard and I am using the "British - Microsoft" keyboard layout.
With this setup no Java 6 app will accept any keyboard entry. Typing has no effect.
If I change to "British" keyboard layout then keyboard entry works, but obvisouly the keyboard layout doesn't match my physical keyboard layout.
Any ideas how I can set things up so I can enter text into Java 6 apps using a keyboard layout that matches my keyboard?
    Thanks
    John

PS It might be worth trying other keyboard layouts designed to match non-Apple British keyboards:

  • Troubles typing in password with non-english keyboard

    Hi guys,
I have a trouble typing in my password. I have set up cze keyboard so if I want to type in numbers I need to hold down shift button. This works when I'm in the OS but when want to log in or sometimes when I dwnld apps, I have to do it without holding dwn shift button, and since characters are not appearing it's freaking confusing. I dunno whether I typed in wrong pass or I should be pressing the shift button. I don't have to tell you how annoying this is..
Do you have any suggestions please?
    Thx

Yes you are right, this is not a bug, it's just bad user interface. Just imagine the following scenario...
Writing a paper, switching to Greek to enter a couple of characters and leaving the mac idle for 5 mins.
The lock screen comes up asking for a password, unfortunately the user didn't change the language
before the mac was left idle and there is no option to change the language in the lock screen.
User has to hard reset to access the mac and let's hope that the user was saving his paper frequenlty.
So from a coding point of view this is not a bug, but from a user interface design it is a huge flaw

  • Dwm and non-english keyboard layouts problem

    Hi all,
I am using dwm 5.5. I'm Greek so I change between keyboard layouts all the time,
    see the relevant xorg.conf section:
    Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
    Driver "kbd"
    Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
    Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
    Option "XkbLayout" "us,gr"
    Option "XkbVariant" ","
    Option "XkbOptions" "grp:alt_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll"
    EndSection
Now the thing is that whenever I switch to Greek (by pressing Alt+Shift) the
dwm tags (1,2,...,9) are not clickable (keyboard shortcuts do work
though, so it's not a very big problem).
Do you have any ideas about how to fix that behavior? I'd go to the dwm irc
channel and ask them, but I'll be a "newbie asking stupid questions" so I
    preferred to ask here
    Thanks in advance

  • Freezing phone and non working keyboard

I just got my first Iphone, its the 3GS. Everything is good with it except that every once in awhile, certain parts of the screen (specifically when using the keyboard) stop working. I woud try and type a certain letter and it wont work, but the others work fine. I went to the ATT store i bought it from and they said to go to an apple store. I dont live close so i was hoping someone can confirm this as an actuall problem or help me fix the problem so i dont have to make the trip.

Have you tired anything to troubleshoot the issue?
If not here are some ideas.
First you can try Apple's troubleshooting assistant:
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/phone/
And then here is Apple's support document for troubleshooting:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1737
If that doesn't help then look into making a trip to the Apple Store where they will probably replace the iPhone if they are unable to fix it. I would highly suggest making an appointment with the genius bar that way you are guaranteed to see somebody for your issue and won't have to wait around for too long.

  • Trying to enter recovery hd and at the firmware password screen it freezes

When I try to boot into recovery HD, the computer loads it like normal and then the firmware password utility shows up and my computer just freezes. The mouse and keyboard have no effect, and I have tried several different mouses and keyboards to be sure. Does anyone have a similiar issue and can help me out here?

If you've set a firmware password and can't enter it for whatever reason, all you can do is take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the password removed. Be prepared to show proof of ownership.

  • I have never set a firmware password on my macbook pro, but when I hold down option to boot from a different drive, I get a lock, and have no idea what the password is..?

I have never set a firmware password on mymacbook pro, but when I hold down option to boot from a different drive, I geta lock, and have no idea what the password is, i am the first owner of my mac so its impossible that someone else has set the password, i have only noticed this becuae i made a bootcamp partition and installed windows onto the machine, after the installation... i shut down the comptuer and continued to use os x, days later i tried to boot into the boot camp partition again by holding down the option key on boot, but i got a window asking me for a firmware password that i have no idea of! please help me!

Hi macbookprowilliam, I have the SAME problem, that grey lock just appeared trolling me. I dunno the password and I wan't to sell this macbook! I need the password. Maybe it's a new malware! I don't even know how to set a firmware password and I am the only user on this computer too! I have a thread about that too: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3926399?start=0&tstart=0

  • I have a macbook pro (13inch). I had a firmware password set on it and updated the firmware when apple update told me to. I cannot change the firmware password or remove it now.

    Hello,
I have a macbook pro which had a firmware password set on it (security-mode = command).
Update asked me to install updates and one of them was an EFI update. I proceeded and the macintosh booted just fine.
I've tried changing the firmware password, and removing the password without success so far. It's almost like the nvram terminal command does nothing as far as security is concerned.
    Help would be appreciated!
    J

Apparently the newer macbooks use a different utility than the older macbooks.
setregproptool will ask for the current password, and nvram is not used for these anymore.
