First battery charge and current issues?

Hi!
I just bought a new MacBook (2.0 GHz, 160 GB). I have two quick questions:
1. I plugged in my AC adapter, turned on the notebook for about 5 minutes to make sure it works fine, etc, then shut it down to let the battery charge. Would I have lost any battery capacity by not fully charging the battery first? And do I need to let the battery run through a full cycle when I first use the computer to ensure full capacity?
2. Are there any updates/best practices for the 2008 (December) MacBook batteries? I know there was an issue in 2007, but for the new line am I set to go? And is it still best practice to put shut the Mac down instead of putting it to sleep to save wear and tear on the hard-drive/battery?
sorry for all the questions: it has been 5 years since I bought my last notebook so I am a bit rusty/excited!

  • Battery Charging and Diagnostic Issue

My problems began a year ago when I bought a HP Envy 17. I'm sure you hear that a lot.
I have come to terms with carrying a portable fire hazard around with me, as with the bizarre decision to seemingly set a different temperature for 'auto-overheat emergency shutdown' off battery than when on battery (side-note, any cure for that?)
More pressingly, my battery has decided that it no longer wishes to charge itself. It has slowly reduced from 100% to 0% over the past few days, even when plugged in. The mesage reads "plugged in, not charging"
The suggestion from HP forums is to follow the instructions here:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c01443470
I resolved to perform a battery test. It took several attempts to reach system diagnostics, but the battery test option was easy to find. On being asked to perform it, the screen displayed the following:
Battery Check - Test in Progress
    Estimated Remaining Time: 8 seconds
    Progress: 0%
It remained the same for the next 10 minutes. There was no response either to any attempt to exit the check by using the ESCape key. Eventually, I performed a sophisticated manouevre which involved pressing the 'Off' key, then trying again. The same happened the next time.
Am I not waiting long enough? Or is there a better way to deal with the issue? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Resolved by reference to a response given to a user who posted half an hour after I did. Bit sad I didn't receive one. Any info on how to meddle with the auto-shutdown thing would still be appreciated.

    Hi E57,
    Thank you for your inquiry.
I am glad you were able to resolve your issue from another thread.
I do not know how to meddle with the autoshut down fearture, but here is a document that may assist you to reduce the overheating issues.   Troubleshooting an Overheating and Auto Shutdown Issue.
    I hope this has helped.

  • IPhone 5s first battery charge

I have just gotten a brand new iPhone 5s and just ran out of battery: how long should I keep it plugged-in for the first battery charge?
    iPhone 5s, iOS 7.1.2

Do whatever you like. Leave it until it's fully charged if you don't need to walk away from the charger with it, or leave it on charge for as long or as little as you like. The best way to look after the battery is to stop yourself inventing rules. Lithium batteries do better when they are exercised. The only thing which you are better avoiding is to do what most people think is good:  run it down until it dies, then charge it to 100%, then run it down until it dies...   This is not good for lithium batteries.
Charge it whenever a charger is to hand, regardless of the current state of charge, and don't worry about it.

  • Extreme charging and syncing issues

Okay, so for the past few weeks I've been developing charging and syncing issues. The first third party usb cable worked for a while and after some point it begin to physically wear and tear, and wires were disconnecting. Needed a new charger, so naturally I went and got another one. However, it didn't work, and as a measure to see if it was faulty, I plugged in the old one and smelt smoke/a burn smell.
So, I plugged the new charger into an old ipod touch 2G and it charges and syncs just dandy. The 3GS is a particularly weird case here; as it will not charge while on. After letting it die, I plugged it in and got an empty battery indicator with a charging (lightning) symbol, and after a couple of minutes it powered back on, but still wasn't charging once ios actually booted up. Weird, right? If I could connect to windows I could restore it to remove the jailbreak, as using Erase All Content and Settings keeps the phone in an endless loop until I hard reset.
The kicker here is that it seems to only charge when it's off, as if its plugged in and you slide to power off, and turn it back on later, it will sometimes have a higher percentage. And, at the place I work, we have many iPads so I plugged it up to the iPad chargers and it worked with some of them, albeit slower then expected.
Is my phone not getting enough voltage or something of the nature? I have 3 wall adaptors, one apple, and two of them standard LG adaptors, and a third party usb cable that notably works for the iPod just fine. I've connected it to 3 different computers with itunes and the result was the same as if it was dead and plugged into the wall; enough power to boot to home screen then die afterwards.
The thing that get's me is when I hit Erase All Content and Settings and it's plugged, it makes a charging noise indication but only when I hit that reset button. If it wasn't for that, I would beleive it was a hardware issue. That, or I'm just trying to deny the phone's inevitable fate. I needed a reason to switch to the 4s, so maybe this is it. I don't like giving on on something without fixing it though so it's gonna bother me until I do.
Thanks for any suggestions or help!

  • Battery will not charge. and other issues

Well i'm working on a friend of mines notebook, its a n100 model 0768 12u running windows xp. This is the situation so far. First his hard drive had fried so i replaced that and put the o.s. back on it,but now the battery will not charge. also the wireless network card and dvd drive did not work. I had originally thought that they might have fried as well when the hard drive went down. However I looked through the forums here and found that alot of people solved the battery issue simply by replacing the battery i recommended that. He purchased a replacement battery ( not a genuine lenovo battery, don't know if that makes a difference) and when i put it in the dvd drive and the network card started working no problem. But alas the battery still would not charge. the system runs fine without a battery in it, but if i put the battery in it while its running it turns itself off after about 30 seconds of having the battery in. when the system is powered off and i put the battery in the battery lcd in front blinks 5 times orange then nothing for about 30 seconds then 5 more times. maybe thats a trouble code, don't know, looked all oover the forums and couldn't find anything quite like it. any help would be greatly appreciated.
     thanks
    Steve

    Duck3,
Glad that worked for you!  Thanks for sharing here.
I saw a weird situation on friend's ThinkPad recently - a replacement battery arrived with a 37% charge (not 100% deliberately as somewhere around 40% is the best for shelf life), but it would not accept a charge.   We did a reset by removing the battery & AC and pressing and holding the power button a number of times  (some people say 10 times, some two or three times for a count of 5 or 10).   This drains residual capacitance.
We plugged back in the battery and AC and it began to charge.
Might be worth a try here before he opens it up ....

Did search on first time charge for laptop batteries. I just picked up a 9 cell laptop battery for my S10. What is the best way to keep the life of these battries long. Read discharge fully then charge for 12 hours. Read charge fully then discharge 3 x's.
Any one know for sure? Please advise!-Thanks.
PS- the battery came charged at 81%.

Hi ... i did the first 3 x times charged full / empty .. later you can charge if you want / need  the battery ... if you use long period of time plugged with psu (week, month)  ... its better to eject the battery ..
store at cool & dry place... and use it when you want mobile

    1. Connect your Z10 to the wall outlet charger for an hour and then with the Z10 powered on, and with it STILL CONNECTED, remove the battery for a minute and replace. This will normally reset the the on-device battery meter and allow the charging status and percentage to show more correctly.

  • LG G2 kitkat SEVERE battery drain and performace issues

After updating my LG G2 to kitkat the other day, my phone performance and battery life have been absolutely awful. Previously I could go 24  hours on a charge with moderate use, and now I'm lucky if I get 4 hours with it sitting on my desk unused with battery saver on. I also get stuttering while navigating, running apps, etc., and it freezes often. I can hardly even use my phone at this point. Anyone else encounter these problems? Anyone know what's wrong?

I'm having the exact same issues along with many others. I can no longer send or receive texts either, answering a call is a nightmare. My phone used to charge to 100% in about 1.5 hours and last for roughly 20-24 hrs. At the moment it's been charging 1.5 hours and it just hit 17%. Within the first hour of the update my phone went from 93% to 15%. Once it died, I plugged it in and it charged decently fast back to 100% so I unplugged it and sat down and watched it drop a percent per minute until it died on me again. I ran task killers and deleted apps and managed to get 3 hours of life off the 3rd charge of the day and now it's not even wanting to charge fast at all. It drains faster than it charges. I plugged it in to charge yesterday at 4 pm. At 2 am it was finally fully charged and I unplugged it to see if it was gonna behave and it was dead by 7:30 am. I was asleep during that entire time frame so it was NOT being used. Oh and it now overheats so badly that it burns me if I touch my face/ear to it.
I want to try a hard factory reset but I have over 1000 photos to back up and now my computer will no longer recognize the phone, it won't install any drivers, it's all errors. So I tried Wireless Storage which I already had set up and was working great and now it won't even turn on on the phone. It's useless. So I resorted to the Verizon Cloud and I can't access any of my photos now anywhere else other than my phone because to activate my account I have to receive the temp password from Verizon in a text  but it wont send or receive texts at all on either wifi or data. Kitkat as good as bricked my 3 week old phone. My hubby's phone on the other hand, is working just fine post update. ARGH!

  • IPhone 5 Battery Indicator and Reboot issues

    Hello Apple community forum,
I have an iPhone 5 that I purchased approximately 20 months ago. It has worked flawlessly and been well taken care of. Only until recently, maybe 3 weeks after I updated to IOS update 7.1.1, I have been having a plethora of issues and now the phone is virtual useless. I have not jailbroken it or have had any third party hardware installed. It all started when I plugged in my Apple lightening cable for charging and an error appeared "unsupported charging cable". From there I have experienced the following problems:
Battery indicator stuck while charging at any various percentage or during normal use and standby. Only a reboot will provide current charge status.
    Extremely fast battery drain.
Unexpected reboots at various intervals or while accessing Apps or browsers. Sometimes very frequent. One day had at least 60 reboots. one right after the other.
    Cannot turn on or off
Shuts off when I put it in my pocket.
    BSOD (Blue Screen of Death)
Screen exhibits lines or odd characters shuts down or reboots.
Time and date at different positions post boot.
Log file full of errors. (Panaic.ips bug type 110 | awdd Wireless | ResetCounter bug type 115| TCCService bug type 167 | Log-Aggregated bug type 193)
The update worked great on the phone and it seemed faster and the battery lasted a bit longer than usual. However, now it is a different story. I was able to backup my phone and offload all my photos on its good day. I was reading the support site and following a few of these forums. I follow the soft and hard rest procedures and even restored the phone back to factory default (DFU mode). It does seem to run a bit better in default without many apps on it but it still exhibits all the above issues. I bit the bullet and went to the Apple store to talk to one of there G men. He acted surprised and gave me the Apple trained verbal run around. He ran the diagnostic and stated that my battery did not even register as being in the system. From there he opened the phone, inspected it for damage and re-attached the battery and taped it back down. BTW, they hosed my screen cover. Nothing is ever free. They did offer to replace my battery for $80 but did not feel that would solve this problem. If anyone has had this issue and did have a new battery installed, please let me know how that worked out.
I wonder if this latest update exposes some type of hardware flaw that was previously fixed or just a bug(s) in the software code. Yet, Apple does not seem to acknowledge there is a problem let alone advise to any upcoming fix. It does not seem that Apple really cares about my little bit of business. If anyone has any ideas or experience, please let me know. This is frustrating and owning too much of my time. Thanks Apple!

If tried techniques to get the battery to act right, such as rebooting by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and it restarts, and those things haven't helped, take the iPhone and iPad to the Apple store genius bar and have the technicians test them to see if there is a hardware fault.  Do that before the warranty runs out so you are covered.

  • IPhone 5 battery life and speaker issues

Hey guys. Not sure if anyone else is having this issue but firstly. The battery life *****. And really *****. I let phone completely drain at least twice a month. Then fully charge it. Not a huge user but data I know eats it. We are talking literally within two hours of not using it and it will be down to 59%. Didn't expect this off a phone like this. iPhone 4S beats it hands down. Considering going back to it tbh.
Speaker issues are terrible. Tried the music on full pause. Then exit. Then test but still nothing. Rang apple they say its not a fault but why would other people be reporting it.
iPad 4 users. Do you have issues with battery life too? And very slow charge and very quick drain. This is a joke. Nearly a Grands worth of kit and you feel like your using a Nokia 3310.
    #annoyed!

  • 3GS battery life and current location problems

I have a 3GS. Until I took a holiday in Mexico it worked fine. On return, the battery life is one half or less as before. I thought I may have picked up a virus or something connecting to the local WiFi (data roaming turned off). I restored a backup and no change. Then I noticed that the 3GS was not able to find its location. I tried several suggestions from several forums to no avail.
    The details:
I recently took a holiday in Mexico. On return I noticed that the battery was not holding a charge as well as it did before I departed or while I was in Mexico for that matter. On return it takes two to three charges to make it thru the day. My first thought was a virus or malware. I did some research on the forums and it was suggested that I do a restore. Ironically, gratefully, I had done a backup before I left so I preformed a restore. There was no change to battery usage. Trying more trouble shooting I discovered that my iPhone cannot find its current position. Once again I researched the forums. I tried changing the international location and back again, resetting the network settings and turning airplane mode on and off. I was able to find a location that was incorrect (several blocks away compared to right on before my holiday) one time and now once again my iPhone cannot find its/my location. On occasion, not every time, when trying to find my location I receive an error message “Could not activate cellular data network”. My theory is the battery life and in ability to find its location may be connected.
    Any help will be appreciated.

I read this and felt a funny coming on....
I know its not funny when an appliance that we depend on doesn't work right, but my funny bone said, "Did you shake the phone to reset the GPS, and did you fly backwards from Mexico to reset everything as it was before you left?"
    Forgive me!!!!

  • IPhone charge and Sync issues

Hi there I have a problem with my 3G and I sincerely hope I can et some help here. I have had my iPhone for about 18 months give or take and have had no problems with it until recently. I had a minor issue about three months into my ownership, in that I broke part of the circuit board that connects to the charger and sync cable. If you were to look at the bottom of the phone, with the screen up, the missing piece would be at the far right. At first I was freaking out of course, but everything worked. I have successfully updated it twice and never had an issue with charging. I was shocked but very happy about this as you can well imagine. Very suddenly two weeks ago the iPhone would suddenly not kick into the charging mode, though it would trickle charge if left connected. It also is not recognised at all by my computer, or by iTunes. I have tried several computers and several sync cables now and can confirm that the problem is with the iPhone itself. I find it difficult to swallow that this problem is related to the earlier breakage, but I suppose it's possible. One interesting bit here is that if I connect the iPhone to the wall charger with the iPhone turned off, It still doesn't go into the charging mode, but the Apple logo appears, I believe this tells me that the issue isn't hardware related, but I'm not positive.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, but honestly I find it difficult to believe that the iPhone would work perfectly for approximately 15 months after being damaged. I'm not discounting the possibility, completely, but it is a bit hard to believe.

  • My iPod dies!!! after the first battery charge cycle

    Hi,
Last month I bought a 30GB iPod video through Amazon when I was on vacations on the US, now I'm in my hometown Lima (Peru)... well, for the month I had the iPod, everything worked fine, but I've never let the battery died, I mean I've always have it fully charged and never get the "not enougth battery message".. until yesterday when it suddenly stops playing.
Well I tough it was nothing so I turn the iPod on again and there was the Apple logo (it was the second time I saw it, the first was on the firmware update), then I get the not enough battery sign, I tougth it was ok.... then I get home, connect to the USB port I always use to synchronize it, and NOTHING happens!!!, the computer does not reconigze it, and it doesn't turn on either, there's nothing on the screen, but I did have noticed something: the iPod was hot, I immediately disconnect it from the USB (it was plugged for about 10 seconds), I've tried to reset it (procedure I've just learned since I've never had any problems with the iPod)... and no matter what i did, it didn't turn on.
I don't think the problem is the USB port because I try to connect a USB drive, and it works.
The questions is...what can I do to fix it?, I'm sure my iPod is covered by the "Apple One-Year Limited Warranty" but the problem is that I'm in Lima!! do I have to send the iPod to the US?? pleeease help me!! I save a year to be able to buy an iPod and now it isn't working!!
    Thanks in advance.
AMD Athlon XP 2400+ Windows XP Pro

Thank u, Ryan, Masna and Kpxjoon...and of course I've tried the 5 R's... I think I've read every single post to find if anyone had a similar problem.. anyway
So.. Broken? how? ... well that's what I thought in first place, that I would have to send the it for service, the biggest problem is that I'm not in the US now, I bought the iPod on the US through Amazon (the shipping address was on the US too)... well now in Lima (Peru), I live here and I wouldn't return to the US anytime soon, Does the warranty still work in here??
I went to iPod Service Request site... and bad news for me again "If you cannot find the country you are looking for.... If you live outside these countries, please contact your local Apple Authorized Service Provider."
I found some Authorized Service Centers in Lima, do I have to take the iPod to them and they will fix or replace it with no charge, even though I purchase the iPod on the US??... it was my biggest worry since the beginning...
The iPod and it's package is in perfect shape, it evens has the plastic wrap, which it comes with...and I keep it in a case, so there's almost no scratches on it, and it's just a MONTH old!!!...I'm not worry about the data, 'cause everything is on my iTunes Library... I just want my iPod back
Sorry for posting so often, Thank u very much for ur time

  • Recommended First Battery Charge

Hi everyone. Im receiving my 8Gb iphone tomorrow and I was wondering how long should I leave it charging for the first time? Ive seen many of you having problems with battery life and Ive looked everywhere but Apple doesnt state anything.
With all my previous phones, as soon as I bought them either on the manual or the service provider's salesperson would specify how long the first charge would be. Its something about charging it a long long time so it's programmed to full capacity, cause if the first time you charge it for just a little while or the typical 2 hours, the battery wont use its whole capacity. Such as with laptops. May be a myth for all I know but its worked with my laptops and my cell phones so far.
So does anyone have an idea of how long should I charge the phone for th efirst time?
Id really appreciate it. Thanks! Susana

You can only charge the iPhone's battery or any battery until it is completely charged. The battery's charge can't go past full - the charging process will stop when full.
Some people like to "season" their battery which I don't think makes much if any difference but to do this, make sure the battery is completely charged.
Use it until the iPhone shuts down automatically - which it will do when the battery is depleted.
Charge it completely - don't disconnect it until completely charged.

  • Probook 6550b Battery/Charging/AC Adapter Issues

Hi, I am having some trouble with my Probook 6550b and am pretty stumped and just want to inquire to the online community before I confirm my worst fear that I have a problem on the motherboard. I am running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit. I bought this laptop about a month ago second hand and it needed a new battery right off the bat and I knew this going in to the purchase. The laptop would still power on with the AC adapter though and the system seemed to run great other than the battery issue. I purchased a OEM replacement battery and installed the battery on arrival and I booted the computer up and everything looked to be working just like it should, the battery was charging and the icon was there in my tray as proof. I thought I had found the remedy to my situation but I was wrong. The battery had charged to about 50% when I shut the system down and I did not touch it for about 5 days until I came back from a family vacation and when I powered it back up the battery had 50% life left but it was no longer showing as charging in the system tray, yet the AC adapter was plugged in. The icon that I was seeing was a battery level without the plug next to it. I started to reasearch this issue and found many topics online about uninstalling battery drivers in device manager and followed that process quite a few times with no success. The battery was still not charging. I ran the HP battery check utility and everything came back perfect which led me to believe the battery was perfectly fine. A message appeared at the bottom of that window that told me there was no power supply hooked up (even though the adapted is still plugged in). I ended up running the battery all the way down to 5% during the research and experimentation process and now the laptop will not power on when both the battery and the AC adapted are connected. The battery itself will not power the computer back on (I am assuming since there is <5% life left), but it will power on with the AC adapter connected (but the battery cannot be installed). The system tray icon I am receiving is a low battery with a flashing 'X'. I have searched and searched online and have not really been able to come across any other possibilities other than a bad power supply or a bad charging mechanism on the motherboard. Some questions I have: Would a fresh installation of Windows possibly remedy this? (I figure not since the laptop will not start up with both battery and AC plugged in; screams hardware issue to me)Any BIOS settings that I may be overlooking?Could a BIOS update help?Any other Windows settings that I may check? If indeed this is a motherboard issue, where could I find a replacement? Thanks so much ahead of time for any and all responses, hopefully somebody will be able to help me!

EDIT: I install the battery after I startup the laptop with just the AC adapter and that's when I lose the power from the supply and the battery icon shows loe battery with a flashing red X. So basically when the battery is plugged in the computer disregards the power supply totally.
