First Bluetooth, then USB fail

I've tried the Bluetooth-related solution mentioned -- unplugging, taking out all USB devices, resting, restarting -- but this seems to be a different problem.
It began, though, with a intermittent warnings that Bluetooth lost connection to the keyboard, while the computer was operating normally. Then, without warning, USB stopped working as well.
Now: On startup, Bluetooth will not recognize devices, but doesn't give me the automatic warning that I have enabled in preferences. It won't find the keyboard if I search. But the blinking light on the keyboard suggests it does make contact for a few seconds, once in a while.
With Bluetooth enabled or disabled, what happens next is the same: at some point, all USB connections fail (but lights indicate power is still being supplied). The length of time from startup that it takes for USB to fail appears to be related to how long the computer was off before startup -- it's varied from a minute or so, with a restart after 10 seconds, to 10 or 15 minutes when the computer was off for about as long.
After USB fails, the operating system continues as normal -- downloads go on, I can load a CD and get a response. But, of course, I have to use the power button to force a shutdown.
There are no new devices connected to the computer, and no similar problems before.

Hi Kathryn,
Bluetooth runns on the USB bus, so it is not surprising to find the two problems occuring together.
What USB devices do you have connected? It may be that one of them has a problem causing the bus to shut down.
My first steps would be to:
1) reset the PRAM (Shut down. Hold down command option p r while starting up. Keep the keys depressed until the chimes have sounded three times.)
2) test the computer, first with no USB devices, and then with only one USB device connected at a time, and see if any particular device is associated with the issue. Avoid using any hub while you do this. Hubs are a common source of USB related problems. (I have also seen something similar when an Apple mouse developed a defective cable, so, if you have a "wired" mouse, don't forget to consider it as a possibility)
3) If, after a PRAM zap, the problem recurs regardless of what is connected then I would be suspecting a hardware issue with the bluetooth module inside the computer.
Cheers
Rod

    Hi CcjNZek,
In case we have misunderstanding, please explain a bit about the following questions:
    1. Do you mean that we lost some files when we failed in the process of transferring files by Bluetooth?
    2. What do you mean about the sentence ‘usb'd to a pc’?
    3. Do you use the phone to connect the Bluetooth? If so, please check if you have backed up those files.
We could check the default folder of the file transfer.
As we use the Windows 8.1, we could use the File History to restore your file in the Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, and Desktop folders and the OneDrive files available offline on your PC.

  • 6260 PCsync problems, syncs first time then "Faile...

6260 PCsync problems, syncs first time then "Failed to open Outlook" "PC Sync could not update the data to the mobile phone." warning appear until reboot.
Got phone, set up latest version of pcsuite ver 6.70.22 via bluetooth.
    Operating system:
    Microsoft Windows XP
    Build 2600
    Service Pack 2
    Bluetooth stack:
    Microsoft Bluetooth stack
    Version 5.1.2600.2180
it synced well for the first time, then will not re-sync. comes up with errors/warnings "Failed to open Outlook" & "PC Sync could not update the data to the mobile phone." warning appear until reboot.
    I have reinstalled PCsuit (twice)
    Removed mmc card
dont really want to re-install outlook.
i dont understand why it works the first time and doesnt until a reboot pc (5 mins each time)
Bluetooth works fine as i can upload or download files without any problems...? Help

Teurastaja, that is not how my sync works with Nokia 6681.
    - I get most of my additions to phonebook to the phone, because that is where I add new contact (someone call me and I add that new contact to phone book etc.)
    - I "clean up" my contacts like you do, using Outlook, it is more convinient that way, like you say.
    - I get 95% most of my calendar stuff to Exchange server(Outlook)and sometimes I add meetings etc. to my phone
Then I syncronise my phone automatically over Bluetoooth everytime I am connected to my PC (this happens 3-4 times/day).
And it works, if I delete something in Outlook, it gets deleted from phone. additions to phone and Outlook get added to "the other end" as well.
I never touch my sync settings and I have "update in both directions" in use.
This is they way it should work and it works as long as you don't change the settings every so often, that confuses the sync and makes it run a "first time sync" and that causes the sync to rewrite the deleted stuff back.

if your computer is not recognizing it, try using a different USB port or different usb cable. if that doesnt work you will need to uninstall and reinstall itunes.

    Hi SBrwn,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
The symptom you're describing can be frustrating to troubleshoot as our options are limited. I do suggest resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) if you have not already. This step can help you regain use of USB and Bluetooth.
Follow these steps to reset the SMC on your iMac:
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
Shut down the computer. [by holding down the power button]
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
You can find these steps and more information at this link:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    All the best,
    Jeremy

    RR,
One thing often tried first is to create a new document and File>Place the corrupted one to see how much may be rescued that way (remember to tick Paste remembers Layers in the Layer palette flyout/dropdown first, and to untick it afterwards).
Here is a website where you can see whether it can rescue the file, and if it can, you may pay for a subscription to have it done,
    http://www.recoverytoolbox.com/buy_illustrator.html
    and another similar website,
    http://markzware.com/adobe-software/fix-illustrator-file-unknown-error-occurred-pdf2dtp-fi le-recovery/
As far as I remember, the former is for Win and the latter for Mac.
Here are a few pages about struggling with it yourself:

    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/500/cpsid_50031.html

Failing a full recovery, hopefully you have one or more earlier versions and/or bits of artwork saved before it happened.

  • First backup to TC failed halfway through after 24 hours plus of transfer

    Dear all
To say that I'm frustrated right now with TM/TC would be an understatement. Here's my situation:
1 I have 270G of data on my iMac
2 my transfer speed to TC is only 130 Gbit/s, less than half speed
3 the TC is about 4m from my iMac, no walls between, same room
4 I have a AXg connected via bridge (for AirTunes) - I did this in an attempt to keep the network at n speeds, but this seems not to be the case
5 the transfer was slow but steady (see #2 above) - after 26 or 27 hours it had reached the halfway point - it will take two and a half days to make the first backup
6 then it failed, and started the backup from scratch again!
What do I do now? If I start the whole process again, it could easily fail again after another day of transfer...
Well, this can't be normal: only half-speed transfer rates, facing a 60-hour transfer that fails halfway through? What do people do with even more data than I have?
I erased the partial backup via Airport Utility, and seek help in avoiding a repeat of this mess.
    Questions:
1 do other processes cause a backup to fail? (eg if my computer is being used, or is synching, or whatever) - it is totally impossible for me to suspend use of my iMac for 60 hours while the initial backup takes place.
2 can I make the initial backup via Ethernet cable?
3 does the fact that I have VM Fusion installed affect the backup?
4 how can I get a better transfer speed (somewhere nearer the max of 300 Mbit/sec?)
I would be very grateful indeed for advice and help - watching the backup creep along for more than a day only for it fail and then be back at square one is mind-numbing.

I searched my system logs and found a file that caused my connection to the TC to fail. I erased that file (after checking what it was - a temporary file connected to my Epson scanner) and tried again to back up for the first time.
This time it worked, and in under 10 hours (I had been expecting about 20-24 hours, based on the data transfer speed).
I'm very relieved - let's hope that TC and TM will now function.

  • What kind of bluetooth dongle(usb) should I get to use my Magic Mouse properly?

My Mac Pro doesn't have bluetooth. What kind of bluetooth dongle(usb) should I get to use my Magic Mouse properly? I already have one, but it makes the mouse seriously lacking.

I keep the dongle plugged into the back of my apple 27" monitor so that means it is only 1 to 2 feet away from the mouse.  Don't plug it into the mac pro itself if that is at any distance from the mouse.  The closer you can keep the dongle to the mouse the better.
Do a smc and pram reset.
If all is lost, and you have xcode installed then you can do a bluetooth factory reset.
Note that if you should sleep your machine, power is off the usb's, so the dongle is off.  This means you cannot wake the machine with any BT devices like the mouse (I use a wired keyboard).  Also sometimes upon waking the machine the mouse does not immediately re-pair (maybe 20% of the time).  So you have to flip its switch to get the system's attention.
While I do have internal BT, using the dongle disables the internal (at least for 2010 mac pro's).
And of course BT would go inactive if you pulled the dongle out!

I am having trouble using my time capsule to back up. I tried repairing through "first aid" Disk 4s2 failed and I have been directed to erase. What is in this disk? Should I erase it??

Only you know what is on the disk.. if you have been running TM to the TC then it will have your backups.. are they important?? Otherwise it will be what you..or others in the house have copied to it.. is that important?
If the first aid has failed the disk then it could be a good idea to erase it.
Does the disk mount in finder so you can see the main directory?

    Thanks Rob.
I actually had no clue what the core problem was caused by. So it's Windows itself...that helps some.
I'll resubmit there. It might actually have saved time for it to simply have been moved to there instead of off-topic, though I suppose you have to follow protocol.

  • I have an epson xp600 and a mac book pro. Wireless printing is OK if I'm lucky for one time only then a 'failed to connect' message so I have to delete and re add the printer to get it working again (but just once!) then the same occurs. Why?

I have an epson xp600 and a mac book pro. Wireless printing is OK if I'm lucky for one time only then a 'failed to connect' message so I have to delete and re add the printer to get it working again (but just once!) then the same occurs. Why?

I am not certain this will fix your problem but I suggest you assign the printer a static IP address.
Using the printer's front panel, select Menu > Network > WLAN > TCP/IP > Boot method, and change it to "static". Provide a static IP address that is on your LAN's subnet.
For example, if you are using an AirPort Extreme, you might give it an IP address of 10.0.1.100. If you are using a Netgear or Linksys router that defaults to issuing 192.168.x.x addresses, you might give it an address of 192.168.1.100. That way, the printer will always "reside at the same address" on your network. If your router has the ability, you should reserve that address so that the router does not attempt to assign it to another DHCP device.
Then, go to System Preferences > Print & Scan, and delete your existing printer with the "–" (minus) button. Add it again, using the "+" (plus) button. In the window that appears, select the IP pane, and from the Protocol menu select "Line Printer Daemon (LPD)". In the Address field type the IP address you gave your printer.
If all goes well the "Pring Using" field will detect the printer at that address and automatically select the appropriate driver. You will see something similar to the following screenshot ("name" can be whatever you decide, and "location" is optional):
Click Add, then you can close System Preferences.
There are other possible reasons your printer is "not responding" which could include wireless interference from competing wireless networks, but try this "static IP" method first. It should mitigate the problem.
