Fix for not boot/keyboard

Here is my problem
No keyboard from bios or burst of clicks from speaker when any key is pressed during bootup (ex: DEL to get in bios)
K7N2 DELTA
2 WD HD (8M cache)
LG CD, LG DVDR
2X512 DDR400 Samsung
350W PS
5200 Nvidia
Generic keyboard ps2
Logitech mouse ps2
A few months again, I was getting no keyboard to enter user name and password from XP. I need to reboot to fix it and this happened only a few times.
Pass 3 weeks; no keyboard was happening almost every time I turn on the computer. Tried cold & warm reboot, no consistent fix. Something it took 20+ reboots and still no keyboard; I gave up for these cases.
The symptom is (set HALT on all error in BIOS) monitor shown HDs and CDs, then message about keyboard not function, the bracket LEDs indicate floppy controller error. System is almost dead. Press any key at this point causes the speaker to beep many times, but eventually will respond to it, ex: DEL key
I tried the following and still didn't fix the problem:
Different bios
Swapped keyboard and mouse, keyboard now OK, but XP doesn’t detect mouse.
Removed half of memory
Changed HD to use cable select
Cleared CMOS using jumper
BIOS default setting
The finally fix, enable HD SMART in bios. I remember I always had it enabled until a few months ago, about the same time the no keyboard problem surfaced. It was very bad for the pass 3 weeks.
It is perfect now, hope this is helpful.

This is what it's all about!   Coming here after finding a fix for your problem and posting to try and help others. Good Job

  • Fix for System Preferences Keyboard Shortcuts crash

This is not a question, but a solution to a problem that proved difficult to identify and fix for me and three Apple Support personnel, so I thought I should post it here in case others encounter the same issue. I spent a lot of time searching the web and Apple Discussions for this and related issues did not come up with any solutions.
After migrating from Snow Leopard on 2009 MacBook Pro to Yosemite on a new MBP using the Migration Assistant, things went surprisingly smoothly for the most part, until I opened the Keyboard pane of System Preferences. Then, clicking on the Shortcuts tab immediately caused System Preferences to crash, reproducibly.
Crash Reporter pointed loosely to a keyboard-related preference setting. But "com.apple.preference.keyboard" is the name of an OS process, not a .plist file. I searched the web to try to find out where Keyboard Shortcut settings are stored in Yosemite, and also for a possible way to reset the settings to default in Terminal (e.g. using the "defaults" routine), without success. (Apple Support was not happy that I had Terminal open when they shared my screen, and seemed never to have heard of this routine).
    Process:               System Preferences [948]
    Application Specific Information:
    objc_msgSend() selector name: retain
    com.apple.preference.keyboard v.14.0 (Keyboard)
objc[948]: GC: forcing GC OFF because OBJC_DISABLE_GC is set
Repairing disk permissions, rebooting in Safe Mode, zapping the PRAM, and trashing ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences, some keyboard-related .plist files, and the system prefs and International prefs caches did not fix the problem. With Apple Support, we isolated the problem to my user account, as the same crash did not occur in a test account, or in another account migrated at the same time. Nevertheless, Apple's techs had me removing various menu items and programs also running in these accounts that I had deactivated (Sophos AntiVirus, Little Snitch, etc), and downloading and reinstalling Yosemite, which seemed unlikely to address the cause, given that my main user account was the only one affected.
Apple never had me check 3rd party preference panes (which I should have thought to do earlier myself). Opening and closing an older version of Default App ((RCDefaultApp 2.0.1), a free 3rd party utility, in the Preferences pane, transiently solved the problem. However, it recurred on removing it, and was not fixed by installing the latest release of this preference pane, nor did removing three other 3rd party preferences panes (MacFUSE, a Citrix app, and Flash Player).
Finally I went back to ~/Library/Preferences and looked for any files that had been modified around the time the problem transiently disappeared, and stumbled upon com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist. After viewing its contents with Property List Editor and finding this article, I thought that this file was likely the problem.
I logged into my root account, verified that Shortcuts worked fine there, and that this file changed with a change in Shortcut settings, and (after renaming the offender to save it as a backup), replaced the file in my main user account with a copy of the one from the root account.
I repaired permissions in the offending account, rebooted, and voilà - problem solved!
NB If you are in a similar situation, before trying this fix (at your own risk!), I strongly advise backing up your computer first, and saving a copy of the presumed offending file in case you have to put it back because of unforeseen consequences. You do not need to enable and use the root account; instead you could log in to a new administrator account, or another user account, verify that Shortcuts works fine there (it would not be a bad idea to set up any user-defined App Shortcuts you want there); and copy the file to a shared folder.
Then switch back into the offending account, go to your user Library/Preferences folder (~/Library/Preferences using Go To Folder in Finder), and replace com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist in that account with the one from the shared folder. You should then repair disk permissions afterwards and restart.
If it works, Shortcuts should open fine. Be sure to check each category  in the left-hand panel of the Shortcuts panel (e.g. LaunchPad & Dock, Mission Control, etc.) for conflicts, and resolve those by disabling the offending duplicate key combination assignments (I had two, marked by yellow triangle alerts).

    Thanks, V.K., for your comments.
I wrote: Enter is accepted, but it's treated the same as Return
not for me. it's both displayed and treated differently. I suspect what you are seeing is a byproduct of using a haxie such as Menu Master.
no it's not. it's treated differently.
In Leopard, Menu Master let me assign Command+Enter to Address Book > Edit Card. When I attempt the same using Keyboard Shortcuts, both Command+Return and Command+Enter are displayed as Command plus a "return arrow." After that, in Address Book, both Command+Return and Command+Enter invoke the "Edit Card" menu action.
    not for me.
if you want to use those keys in the shortcuts use one of the many 3rd party app launchers. any one of them will let you do this: Qucisilver, Butler, Spark, Launchbar, ikeys, quickeys etc.
I've been using QuicKeys since the beginning of time, and I have some experience with Butler and LaunchBar. They're useful for what they do. But, as far as I know, none add keyboard shortcuts that are displayed directly in the menus. That display feature is what makes Menu Master and Systems Prefs > Keyboard Shortcuts so attractive.
that's because Menu Master is a haxie. none of the other programs mentioned are. you want such functionality you are going have to use a haxie. personally - i stay away from them as they destabilize the system.
When I'm considering new shortcuts, I use KeyCue to display all current shortcuts in a single display. KeyCue now displays QuicKeys shortcuts in the same display, which is a big help.

  • Any fix for non-booting back-up disks?

I have 5 Lacie back-up disks, all firewire, and all based on clones of my iBook (on 10.4.6).
Unfortunately, they've all followed the same pattern of decline - working perfectly for a year or so, then suddenly becoming unbootable. They appear as a bootable option in system preferences, but simply fail to boot - same too when the option key is held down at startup.
My last 2 disks went unbootable at the weekend, when I installed iLife 06 on the iBook (can't see any link between the events.)
Disk Utility assesses them all as needing no repair, but it sound like they're not spinning fast enough to start up. The blue 'Power-on' light doesn't flicker either, as it normally does when a disk is active.
They're 2 - 4 years old, still store data fine and mostly mount first time. The line-up includes three d2s (300GB + 320GB) + 2 Porsche mobiles (100GB). Slim chance I know, but since Google throws up several instances of Lacies becoming unbootable, for no apparent reason, has anyone found a fix for this?

    conran:
The firewire bridge is the interface that enables the HDD to communicate with the computer. That's about all that I know about it. In my case, both drives to which I referred in my earlier post, were still functional. In the case of my LaCie I could feel the vibration of the HDD spinning, but nothing came up. You can read about it here. In the case of my son-in-law's HDD, nothing worked. I was not even sure if the drive would work if I pulled it. But I put it in my enclosure and it worked fine. Everything was still on it the way it was when he last used it.
Those LaCie Porsches do look pretty neat. I still have my case, although I don't know what I would do with it. Buying a firewire bridge by itself would have cost more than the enclosure cost. So I don't have a neat shiny box anymore, -- just a blue box. But it works! If I want to look at a neat shiny box I can set that up next to my computer and look at it; but it only makes me sad.
Incidentally, the computer's firmware has nothing to with it. LaCie had a firmware update that I downloaded, but my firmware was up-to-date.

  • My fix for slow boot after Leopard Upgrade

I was having the same issue as a lot of others in posts about extremely slow boot up times after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard. I spent a lot of time on the phone with Apple Support but in the end I stumbled across a fix for my situation.
After power up and getting to the login screen (about 5-6 seconds), it would take about 3 minutes to fully populate the desktop after entering my password. Most of that time just sitting at the login screen. Extremely painful.
My MacBook connects to a Windows Active Directory network. I was able to fix my slowness by disabling the Active Directory service. I was concerned at first but my bound volumes still work. I don't use a lot of AD services from my Mac so I at this point I have not found any issue with this fix.
To disable, go to Directory Utility, select services and if you have Active Directory enabled, disable it.
My boot time increased from 3 minutes to less than 15 seconds. Better than Tiger.
Tech Support is aware of this issue and has reported it the OS team for a fix.

    Hi-
Do you have a Tiger volume to test your machine with?
Do you still have video in Tiger?
If you don't have a Tiger volume to test on, I would consider such as an important troubleshooting step
So now I am wondering if it is the PCI slot that suddenly stopped working after the OS upgrade. Does anyone know if this is a documented issue and if there is a fix for it?
There are no issues with the AGP slot in relation to an OS version.

  • What is the fix for a wireless keyboard that eats batteries?

What is the fix for a relatively new wireless keyboard that eats batteries?

Part of it may be something in the battery reporting software.
I got my first wireless Apple KB with a new iMac last November (2011) and, disliking the abbreviated design for desktop use, bought a wired board for the iMac and appointed the wireless to be the travel keyboard for my MacBook Pro. I used it on a routine basis and the battery level stayed at 100 percent until June, when it suddenly read 50 percent. Today it's still 50 percent. Makes absolutely no sense but it works.
It's been on most of the time, including a couple of trips when I failed to turn it off and it was running in my backpack for days. It still ahs the batteries Apple shipped with it.
My Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse,  on the other hand, showed normal battery decay over time when connected to the same computer
If the keyboard stops working, that's one thing but, if you are seeing odd percentage reports and the thing still works, just keep using it until it dies. A couple of spares in the computer bag take very little space.
I've not seen a battery calibration feature mentioned for input devices like we have for the "smart" batteries in notebook Macs.

  • Fix for "Not Connected" Error Messages When Trying to Access Web Services

If you run across an error message on your printer stating that it is "Not Connected" when trying to access ePrint or your Apps, but you know it is connected to the internet, it probably just means that the printer is not connecting to the server properly.
Here is the first set of steps I would try, since they seem to resolve this issue half of the time.
The first thing I would try in this situation is a network reboot.
First, disconnect the power cord from the back of your router.
Next disconnect the power cord from either the back of the printer or the wall, without powering it off first.
Wait about 30 seconds and reconnect the power cord to your router.
Wait about another 30 seconds and plug the printer back in. It should boot back up automatically, but if it doesn't go ahead and press the power button.
Once everything is back up and running, try to access ePrint or your Apps.
If those steps don't work for you, the next thing would be setting a Static IP & DNS for the printer. Before doing this, you want to print off a network configuration page. It varies from model to model, but it is usually found under the Wireless Settings or under Reports in the Setup menu. After you have that page, follow these steps.
Before we start, we need a network configuration page with your current connection settings. To get this, press the wireless button on the front of your printer and then press "Print Info" or "Print Report". This will print off a network configuration page, which has information on it that we need to complete the next few steps.
After you have that, we will need to access the printers Embedded Web Server (EWS). You can do so by entering the printers IP address (from the network configuration page) into your browsers address bar and pressing enter.
Once there, press the "Network" tab at the top of the page. From there you will want to click the "IPv4" button, located on the lef-hand side of the page. It will be there for WIreless and Wired, so make sure to click the one for you however you are connected. If you do not see "IPv4", you should see "Networking", press that and then press "Network Address(IP)".
Next, you will want to click the small round button next to "Manual IP Address" and then fill in the boxes for IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway, using the information found on the network configuration page.
For the Primary or Preffered DNS Server, you will want to enter 8.8.8.8.
For the Secondary or Alternate DNS Server, you will want to enter 8.8.4.4.
Click apply and when the message pops up saying that the changes have been applied, press "OK".
Press the power button on your printer, wait for it to fully power off and then press it again to power it back on.
After doing this, go ahead and try to enable ePrint again.

    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

The reason we recommend using 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for the DNS server is because they work when ISP assigned DNS servers do not. The DNS server assigned to you by your ISP is not able to resolve the domain for web services, therefore not allowing the printer to connect.
I assure you that it is with your ISP's DNS server and not the printer. If you were to take the printer back to the store and get a replacement, you would have the same issue, unless you changed the DNS. Same goes for any of our web service enabled printers.

  • Is Apple working on a fix for the Boot Camp on 3TB Fusion Drive issue?

  • Possible fix for slow/sluggish keyboard when texting(SMS)

I've had a problem with the sluggish keyboard when texting for a while now, but I believe I've found a solution. For me this solution speeds up the keyboard dramatically immediately after performing it.
    1. Open SMS app and start to type a text message
    2. Notice the slow keyboard
    3. Press home button.
    4. Open Safari
    5. Go to a simple web page (I use Google's homepage) and let the page load completely.
    6. Close all other browser windows. (Not sure if this is absolutely necessary, but it doesn't hurt)
    7. Press home button.
    8. Open SMS and continue typing your text. Your keyboard should be fast.
To Apple: I'm not sure why this works for me, or if it works for anyone else, but it seems to be a problem with an unloaded page in Safari. When a page is loaded or forcibly stopped (by pressing 'x') the problem goes away.

If you literally "checked" them, meaning the checkboxes, that only affects their visibility. To remove them, select one and then click on the "minus" part of the "plus minus" at lower left.

  • Any fix for not playing swf files?

    Hello
Having trouble getting FF to play my Flash 8 swf files on
    this page
    http://www.enhancedwireless.net/indexrdm.html
There should be a small logo animated for about 3 sec in the
upper left of this page, but instead I get nothing on my MAC OS
10.3.9. and any of my friends using PC and MAC get nothing as well.
Safari plays this fine...Also there are 7 or 8 banners on
this page 4 of which are swf files, and these are scripted to play
randomly on every refresh of this page, however they do not appear
at all on FF/netscape on mac or PC...some machines get nothing,
some get a big Quicktime logo in the middle of where the swf banner
should play. All my swf files need Flash player 8 or higher to
work. IE 6 has problems but IE 7 seems to play these OK.
    So, how to fix this?
    Thanks

You may have already tried this yet have you tried exporting
your file using a lower flash player? No guarantees but its always
    worth a try

  • On IMAP email, is there a fix for not being able to save to the SENT or DRAFTS folder?

    Dear Support,
Recently I switched from POP to IMAP email. Now the IMAP account does not save Drafts or Sent folders. The POP account is still set up and does save. I love using Thunderbird and have used it for over 10 years. This bug is very annoying to me. Can you please tell me if a fix is in the works? From the chat boards it seems like many users do have the bug.
    Thank you,
    Chris

Wrt the drafts folder, try to use the local one instead of the one on the server.
Problems with copying messages to the Sent folder on the server may be caused by an unreliable Internet connection. I'm afraid there isn't much you can do about this. Have you checked with your email provider?

  • HP Photosmart 309a - the fix for not printing black, resulted in wireless radio not functioning.

My HP Photosmart 309a printer was not printing black, trying various ideas from this forum, I used the #6 reset (after replacing cartridges etc etc). This was successful and the black printed out on a test page, but then I couldn't reconnect wirelessly to the PC.
The Wireless Network Test Report says the Wireless is on, but that the Wireless radio is not functioning. (It seems that the #6 did something to the Wireless on the printer.)
The #6 reset turned the wireless radio off. After I turned it on again its search still did not find any wireless routers.
I have tried various printer resets, #3, #6 to no avail. Would appreciate any further ideas.
This is my second HP printer. I got rid of my last one recently, when I couldn't get it to print black, even though it was stilll quite new. This one is certainly not a year old, but because we are selling our house and have put almost everything in storage I don't have access to the receipts, so cannot get the printer replaced.
