Fixing a mail problem

Two weeks ago I made a complete backup of my 10.8.3 system using carbon copy cloner to an external drive.  My web hosting service decided to make changes to some of their servers.  I have always used the mail program on my Mac Pro with iCloud (never a problem) and added an additional account for mail coming into and out of my website.
Yesterday when I opened the mail program it generally fetches my iCloud mail and my website mail but it went into a tailspin beachball that wouldn't end - even after hours of waiting I had to force quit.  Researching I found the advice to turn off the website mail account to see if that would return mail to normal.  That did work and my iCloud mail and the mail returned to normal.  But if I turned on my other account for my website the beachball returned.
The web hosting service had me make all kinds of changes to my second email account trying this server and that server, deleting my web site mail account and setting it back up again but we never found a fix.  Now they say I shouldn't have made the changes and I should return my mail program settings back to what they were - but of course I don't know what they were prior to all the changes.
I'm hoping to start my Mac Pro from the backup external drive and copy back just the mail program and settings.  I don't want anything else to change on my system.  Is that possible with the Carbon Copy Cloner program I previously used to back up my system?  If so, do I just uncheck everything I don't want overwritten and check only the mail features and directories?
Thanks for the help!

  • Fixing iPhone mail problems in IOS 7

This is a re-posting of my original discussion regarding mail problems with IOS 7 so I could correct the tags associated with the discussion:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23199621?ac_cid=op123456#23199621
I am certain my mailbox names match those on my AOL server, that AOL preferences are set so all mail is saved on the server and my iPhone (4) settings are to retrieve mail from the server, not my iPhone.  I have matched the settings on my problem iPhone with my second iPhone that, after upgrading to IOS 7, works perfectly using the same AOL mail account.  I have deleted the mail account on the problematic iPhone and set it back up.  I have restored the iPhone to factory settings, updated it with my setting from a backup and re-synced my personal data.  I do not sync with iCloud because mail syncs well through WiFi or through iTunes.  Anyone with similiar mail problems who can suggest fixes that work would be most appreciated.  Thank you.

Additional information:  i decided to delete both of my iPhone mail accounts and re-enter them using the automated setup in Settings . . . neither account would load because of an error message that the outgoing IMAP server was incorrect. I went to AOL and got the IMAP server "in" and "out" settings but when I tried to enter the correct number, I discovered you can't change it (grayed out).  Catch 22 - When setting up the account, iPhone assigns an AOL primary outgoing server number after you identify the @aol.com address, and you can't change it.  It is not the one AOL said to use.  (Is this the IOS 7 software error that might be causing the problem???)   I set up the phones manually again, with the phone automatically entering the outgoing server number, but got a a different error message that I may not be able to send or receive mail.  I was able to enter the correct outgoing server number ONLY when I added an additional outgoing server.  It lets you enter the server number.  Seems when there is a primary outgoing server (the iPhone assigned number) and a backup (one I entered with the correct number) both phones work! I know, complicated!  Finallly, I suspected this is all about mailbox behavior on OS X and ISO devices and the problem is likely specific to just AOL accounts so I mapped where mail goes after being sent on all devices . . . interesting.  As I suspect, sent mail goes to different mailboxes on OS X devices and ISO devices, so you have to go look for them.  They are there, but in different locations.  I may have to live with that.  Anyone else dealing with this?

  • Maverick as a "Fix" for Mail Problems

I am running Lion 10.7.5    My Apple Mail randomly fails to place a "Sent" message in the "Sent" folder, yet the e-mail goes through.  More likely to happen with larger files, but not exclusively.  Applecare has tried to help, but they were stumped as well.  It has been suggested that I install Maverick to fix this most annoying problem.  Anyone like to comment on changing to Maverick as a solution???

The mail account this happens in is my iCloud account.  I also have a Roadrunner account, but I have never caught this problem there.

  • How can I fix my mail problem?

I have a Macbook Pro running OS X Snow Leopard 10.7.5.  My mail app is constantly asking me to re-enter my password, also there is checkbox that says, "Remember this password in my keychain". By the way I am using a Yahoo mail account. First I tried restarting the app, I recieved a few emails and then again it asked me for my password. I also tried deleting the account and signing in again. Same as before a few emails sent and recieved until the notice popped up again. This problem does not occur on my iPhone or my iPad. If I ignore the notice for a few minutes, the computer starts speaking and says, "Mail needs your attention". This does not happen with any of the other accounts logged in to the same app. I am not sure if it is the mail server or a problem with the app. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please help?

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup
Note, in 10.5 & up /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/ may or may not exist.

  • How do I fix out going mail problem because of bleeding heart

My internet mail provider patched their servers  due to Bleeding heart and I can no longer send mail from my computer. I followed their instructions and am still not able to send mail. They say I have to speak to Apple- its an Apple mail problem. 1st the message was the certificate was not valid, now i just get a message that I can't connect to the server.

Try deleting the old email account and adding it again.
It is also worth remembering that the heartbleed bug also will cause certificate authorities to revoke their own certificates which guarantee the validity of any server certificates. This can cause Mail to throw errors.
If this is the case, try waiting it out for a few days, and if you are desperate, you should just be able to mark the certificate as trusted when the certificate error occurs

  • IMAP mail problems -- is someone fixing this?

    Hi
I've seen a ton of questions the last day on imap mail problems. I am experiencing the same on my gmail account; it's kicking out a message that my password is incorrect.
I get the password is incorrect at imap.gmail.com; have logged out of gmail on the Mac, logged back in, checked that imap is enabled, 17-tuple checked the password, etc.
Seems a lot of folks have this problem on various providers...is this an Apple problem, and are they doing anything about it?
    Thanks

I know this from experience and general knowledge.
If your account's password is rejected with an email client on your computer and with your iPhone, how do you figure this has anything to do with Apple?
AOL reported problems today with AOL account access via IMAP with an email client only. Webmail access with a browser was not affected. This was an AOL server problem which had nothing to do with Apple or with Microsoft for those with a PC who couldn't access their AOL account being accessed as an IMAP account with an email client on their PC either.
Have you contacted Google or Gmail customer or technical support?

  • Upgrade install to 10.5 Mail problems solution

Ok, I am posting this after 2 days of research why Mail behaves crazily after I installed 10.5 via update. I tried archive and install as well with same Mail problems resulting.
Now maybe this wont work for everybody, but it solved all my problems like a charm resulting in Mail working perfectly now.
After one whole annoying day behind the forums I just thought I should post it.
The basic problem was that my Mail didn't want to receive messages while the progress bars were just spinning infinite. Quitting Mail had to be done via Force Quite to stop it.
First thing i noticed was that if I open "*Previous recipients*" panel I get the everlasting spinning beach ball.
So I gathered that there must be some problem in the communication between Mail and Address Book. I backuped the Address Book database and deleted everything I could find connected with Address Book.
Next step was going to Mail folder in my User Library where I deleted all mailboxes .plists and mails because I had some messages I couldn't delete in Mail app. I also deleted other .plist files.
Then I reinstalled Address Book via additional install and rebooted the machine.
Address Book now contained no addresses. I opened Mail, and bingo everything started working, opening "previous recipients" showed 0 contacts and I starter using Mail without problems.
To finish the thing, just backup Address Book ad voila.
Now, maybe that won't sort out everybody's problem, but it sure did mine. And I had all Mail problems described on this forum while sing Mail.
Good luck fixing this highly annoying Leopard feature!

    Hi,
Same thing here. All printers gone. Archive & Install 10.5 on a 2.33Ghz MBP. Cannot find my network printers. Tried everything I can think of. When I boot from my external drive (10.4.9) everything works great. Leopard also ate my company VPN and won't give it back. Any help would be welcome.

  • Mail Problems before and after 10.4.6

On Friday, running under 10.4.5, Mail started acting strangely (it would have the gray wheel around my main accounts -- from two different servers). I would have to force quit. At the same time, address book stopped opening (it would require a force quit as well) and iCal similarly began to have problems (it would not accept new events and would also require a force quit). I upgraded to 10.4.6 and now Mail (2.08) will not open at all and the other problems continue. I have verified the permissions. there is plenty of free space. I am not keen to reinstall and since the problem occurred without any other apparent problem, I wonder if anyone has a solution.

I'm having the exact same problems -- plus Safari is repeatedly crashing. Strangely, it's only happening on one side of the two user set up!!
I reinstalled OS 10.4.5 Monday (4/3) to try to fix the Mail issue, and later that night 10.4.6 was automatically downloaded and installed. That's when the other problems started.
Question: Are fresh versions of just Mail 2.0.8 and Safari 2.0.3 (or later) ONLY available for downloading somewhere?

  • E71 E-Mail Key and Related Mail Problems

Since my E71 was updated to the latest firmware (at a Nokia Service Center) around 6 months ago I have had a number of odd mail problems, which manifest themselves as follows:
After an initial boot everything with mail and messaging works fine as expected. However at least once or twice a day the phone switches unpredictably into an odd mode with the following symptoms:
      1) E-Mail key stops responding to short or long presses.
      2) New e-mails and sms messages which arrive do not appear on the home screen as usual, though they may (or may not) appear as small icons in the top right corner of the screen.
      3) For new e-mails only the title/header is downloaded, whereas usually I have it set to automatically download the first 2 K of each message.
      4) New messages still appear as 'unread' even after reading them. Manually setting them to 'read' works, but only after a long delay.
      5) The flashing navigation key light which warns of new messages/mails gets stuck in flashing mode and will not stop until the phone is rebooted.
Problems 1-3 occur every time, and 4&5 occasionally, but all can only be cured by rebooting the phone, after which it works fine again - for a while.
Since I first saw this problem I have updated the firmware twice (it is currently on the latest version), but the problem persists. I wonder if anyone has seen this problem or has any idea how to fix it? It's a great irritation with an otherwise excellent phone, especially since it was all working fine when I first purchased it. Thanks for any comments or suggestions

For anyone who is interested, I've found the answer to my own question, though not the solution to my problem. After several days playing with mail settings I noticed that when Retrieval settings > E-mail to retrieve is set to 'Headers only' or ' Msgs & attachs', there is no problem. However, if it is set to 'Size limit' with a setting of say 2K or 5K (i.e. just enough to capture the first few important paragraphs of any message) then receipt of many types of formatted mails larger than the specified size causes the mail program to crash, and the OS to switch into the odd mode described in my earlier post.
This is particularly irritating since I travel frequently overseas in Asia where roaming GSM data use is expensive (and there are no caps or limits on roaming fees), and due to the nature of my work my e-mails typically come with long threads and large attachments. Therefore I am left with the choice between:
         A) Downloading mail headers only and waiting till I can find a WiFi connection to find out what the message actually says
         B) Downloading the whole message and paying many hundreds of dollars a month in data roaming fees
         C) Using the fixed mail size limit setting and accept that my mail program will crash several times a day and
require the phone to be rebooted each time to restore normal functionality
Anyway, it seem this problem is clearly due a bug with the Nokia mail software in recent builds, since it worked fine with these exact same settings for the first year I had the phone, and repeated clean re-installs of the latest firmware do not fix the problem. Therefore, if any Nokia developers are monitoring this board you can add this to your bug list, and you know where to start looking for the bad bit of code.

  • Mail problems on Yosemite

    Hi there,
Does anybody know if anything is going to be done regarding the mail problem on Yosemite?
this was a recurring on Maverics too...
Since i updated to Yosemite, mail does not work well on my iMac, i cannot get my mail... but i can send mail.
it does not seem to connect properly to my Pop account.
my mail does work well on my iPhone and other devices.
it was fine after the recent Yosemite update, and now it's back... and very frustrating,
is there anyone who can help ? or anyone at Apple that is going to fix it for once and for all ?
    Thanks.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Is there a fix for Mail keeping 4 connections open for one.......?!

Is there a fix for Mail keeping 4 connections open for one email account setup as IMAP.......?!
Im just wondering whether this is possible because it means our company website falls over when the processes go over 25! There are a lot of emails.....
It is a massive pain and ideally we dont want to upgrade our hosting package if we can help it!
There must be a way round it?! Someone brainy know any tricks?!

    Ernie Stamper wrote:
Never have encountered this -- more info, please? What are 4 connections, exactly?
Very simple: Mail opens one connection for each IMAP mailbox on the account. Typically, this means Inbox, Sent Mail, Drafts, and Trash, but also includes Apple Mail To Do and Junk and any mailboxes/folders the user has created.
The problem is that Mail is keeping these connections open when it's done checking for new mail, even when *Use IDLE command if server supports it* is not enabled. With 4 email accounts on one server, this causes a "500 Internal Server Error" because there are too many processes running. As soon as I quit Mail, my web server resumes serving pages.
