Flash alternative

What is the alternative to flash player on iPhone? A lot of websites in NZ use this platform but it is not compatible with iPhone. Even my work website uses flash player to allow people to listen to our online radio streaming, but You cannot access this due to the incompatibility if you have an iPhone or iPod touch. I love my iPhone but this flash topic is frustrating and limiting in NZ

Apple isn't always right, but they have been right much more often than wrong as a leader, not a follower. Much easier to be a follower. For the most part, Apple skates to where the puck will be. First with a mouse and with a GUI on a marketed scale. First to remove the floppy disk drive from all their computers replacing it with a CD drive - skating to where the puck was going to be years before the PC box assemblers copied and followed suit, which brought the same type of responses by the Apple faithful at the time regarding "how could Apple do this" and "what a mistake" blah, blah, blah, blah. We know who was right there way ahead of the curve and there are other examples. There are some non-favorable examples as well but they have been right much more often than wrong.
This link includes some valid technical reasons.

At the end of the day, not supporting flash has not hurt sales much with well over 100 million iOS devices sold to date.

  • Flash Alternative for developing app with lots of 2D Animation

First let me say, I know Flash does not run on iPad. And I'm not looking for an alternative to Flash Video.
I want to create an app for the iPad, with a lot of full screen, 24 frames-per-second animation. Basically an interactive Animated Movie, like the game Dragon's Lair, from days of yore.
I know how to do this in Flash, using the timeline and drawing and animation tools, and using Actionscript to track user clicks and trigger events in the movie.
Are there any alternative tools I can use for iPad app development, that will allow me to:
-- Draw directly in the tool
-- Do frame by frame animation in the tool
    -- Uses a timeline
-- Uses vector images to keep the file size down
-- Has a scripting language that will allow me to track the user clicking on invisible buttons and trigger new animations?
I've looked at all of Apple's Developer tools for the iPhone and iPad, but they all seem to use Bitmapped Sprites which would make the file size way too big, and animation a nightmare.
Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Well, there are several 3D game developers for the iOS operating system including EA Sports and id Software's Doom Engine. And in the Apple Software Development Kit for iOS, there are numerous API's for game development. I think you should google game development for the iOS (ipad and iphone), and see what they've got.

  • IWeb -MobileMe widget flash alternative?

I use an iMac and use iWeb to create and manage my website - it is great.  I use the MobileMe widget to have photos scrolling on my page automatically - very nice... unfortunately if a visitor views my website with an iPhone or an iPad ("the ultimate browsing machine") they cannot see this because their Apple device does not support Flash (yes I read:  http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash).  So where is the support for the heralded HTML5 in this MobileMe widget?  What is the alternative to accomplish the rolling photos so that iPhone and iPad viewers can see the content?   www.chriskopf.com.   Thanks, Chris.

  • Flash Alternative Content ~ Best Practice ~ Safari on iOS Devices ~ iPad iPhone iPod Touch

    Hi Folks,
Is there a documented best practice for providing alternate content for Flash in Safari on iOS devices?
I am getting white space where my Flash animation would normally appear, and management is displeased. I need to display alternative content in this space. I'm hopeful that Adobe has published a best practice for how to accomplish this.
    tyvm
    Keith

Not sure about Adobe official stance but they have started using swfobject Flash detection to place Flash <objects> on the Web page. The problem I see with the Adobe implementation is that about the only alternate content they recommend is "Click here to download the latest version of Flash player".
That is about the lamest alternate content you could possibly imagine! Just because you recommend that your viewers download the new version.... doesn't mean they will... so they still go without REAL alternate content.
A MUCH BETTER use of swfobject is to actually provide alternate content! For your review::
If you think that Flash is somehow bad for SEO, it's time to dispell that MYTH!
If fact, in some circumstances I'll use Flash INSTEAD of just HTML because then I'll have better SEO than with just HTML alone.
    http://www.worldbarefootcenter.com/
The link to World Barefoot Center in the above post is just one example. View the source code and you see a couple paragraphs of text along with regular HTML links.... but what displays is the Flash version of the image and Flash links.
The client provided the artwork for the page... and that's what they wanted to use a .jpg image. Well yes, that could be done in HTML but it would be virtually invisible to Google. So Instead I converted the image into a Flash .swf and used swfobject to display the Flash. swfobject allows you to create alternate content inside the <div> which also holds the Flash .swf, then when the page is loaded it detects if the browser has the Flash pluggin. If it does, it displays just the Flash content, if not, it displays the alternate content. Since almost everyone has the Flash pluggin, for most people the Flash version of the <div> will display.
The alternate content for that <div> can be any regular HTML text, images, media player, links, etc., anything that you would use if you were not using the Flash. Now the best part is that the alternate content can be "over the top" as far as optimizing for SEO, since it will not be seen by most viewers.
Here's another example of SEO with Flash.. again, the page is just a single image provided by the client:
    http://www.ksowetsuits.com/
View the source code. The alt content is paragraph after paragraph of information about the site, including lists and links. If it was just the HTML, it might be kind of a boring Home page. But for SEO I can go "over the top" in promoting the site, since most viewers will never see that part... but it's all indexed by search engines. The end result is BETTER SEO using Flash than just HTML.
On another Web site, a Flash video is displayed, the alt content is the complete text narration of the video. Now how many people would take the time to read that if they could just watch the video instead?? again, better SEO with Flash than without. In fact in one case we had first page search result from that video narration within 4 hours of posting the page.
On still another site with a Flash video, the alt content is another video, but a .mov version, which will, in effect play Flash video on the iPhone (not possible you say??). Well since the iPhone does not have Flash pluggin, it simply displays the .mov version of the video, while everyione else sees the Flash version.
So anyway, if Flash is a part of your Web development, you should look into using swfobject and alternate content.
    http://code.google.com/p/swfobject/

    www.cidigitalmedia.com
So it is and has been for a number of years now, very easy to provide alternate content for non Flash devices... and that includes text, images, and video.

  • Flash alternative for firefox

So what I want to know is there a alternative way to play flash videos in firefox using I do not know an alternative open source flash player or something ??
    Thank you in advanced

    Thank you for the reply
Sadly I do not have good results so far with Gnash and Lightspark.
as far as I know there is no way to use pepper flash with Firefox. Would be great if I am wrong.
I think i should give up on this.

  • No flash alternative

    Hi there
I have a question regarding flash and in case there is an error when loading it through a browser. Is there anyway to tell the browser if the source doesn't load or the user doesn't have flash installed, display an alternative image/text?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated
    thanks!

Do a Google search for SWF Object Replacement.
If Flash is not detected, you serve a photo, jQuery slideshow, text or some other relevant content.

  • So will we ever be getting an alternative to flash?

it's ridiculous I really kind of regret buying an iPad... the Internet is literally cut by like 60%... I understand apples concerns.. but come on now, HTML5 is hardly used on the web.
I really can't do much on the iPad at all... no websites with any animation, no games, no videos really... it's a serious draw back, and with other tablets coming out that DO offer it it's a serious threat to the iPad. and with good reson.. this is a Serious problem..
what's the point of having a tablet that only allows you to use half the Internet?

54% of the videos on the web are in html5 and the number continues growing.
Flash is dying-even adobe is making html5 products:

There can be no flash alternative-flash is a proprietary thing wholly owned by adobe.
I for one do not miss it at all, I also block it on my desktop pc because of the steaming pile of security flaws it is.

  • Macbook 2010 won't boot - flashing question mark, prohibitory sign then Apple icon

Okay so some of this is my fault. We'll get to that later.
A few months back this Macbook my uncle gave me (without the Mac OS X Installer DVDs it came with) failed to boot - displaying the spinning gear/Apple icon/grey screen so many others have experienced.
I've done everything that could be done without the Installer DVDs - reset the PRAM, the SMC, attempt to go into Safe Mode (failed - only displays the progress bar until it fills up then back to the grey screen)
I've also done fsck -fy and it would always return to either "FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED" so I'd run it again to receive the result "The volume Impala appears to be okay", but whenever I would hit "reboot" it's like nothing ever happened.
I got a hold of a(n illegal) copy of someone else's Installer DVDs from the net - not so I could install that but so I could load DiskUtitlity from a bootable flash drive to transfer files to my external HD by the restore option in DiskUtility - worked for a bit (ran verify permissions, repair disk permissions, the whole shebang) but then failed, was only able to copy the "Applications" folder by restoring the volume to the external HD I had plugged in, and nothing else.
So when just this afternoon, I was fiddling with the prompt that displayed whenever you entered single-user mode, trying to move documents from inside the Documents folder into the Applications folder (because I thought that if I did "restore" all over again it would copy needed files into my HD like it did the last time - the /Volumes directory disappeared.
What could have caused this? I know that this is what's causing the flashing, alternating icons during attempted startup, but I swear that I didn't even think of doing anything to modify the /Volumes directory. One minute I was entering files /Volumes just to fiddle with it, then proceeded to go in deeper to cp or mv files into the /Applications directory, the next it was gone.
What should I do? I contacted the local Power Mac Center nearby to check if they're carrying the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Installer DVDs but I'm pretty sure that those things are limited now to the U.S. and the U.K.?
Please send help/advice, I'm broke and pretty much very very desperate.
    Thank you for your time.

and also we have this older MacBook (2007 I think) that flashes the prohibitory sign (circle with slash going through it) whenever I try to boot it - started doing that a few days ago and I swear on both laptops that there are no peripherals that are plugged in except for the MagSafe (this older MacBook has no batteries installed since the last one shot out two years ago and we haven't had the money to replace it..)
Could the MagSafe be the problem? Because I haven't been doing anything dangerous on this older one (even cleared out some old files/videos to free up disk space) but still, it went ahead and got into a coma.
I can only access it via Safe Boot (pressing shift right after I power it up) and thankfully, its FireWire port using Target Disk Mode.
How I wish I could use Target Disk Mode on the later (2010) model, but alas, the only solution is to purchase the Installer DVD - only the Apple Reseller I contacted hasn't contacted me back yet.

Thank you for your interest in Adobe Flash Player. Unfortunately Apple does not allow Flash Player to be installed on iPhone or iPad.
May I add, this is the answer I get When I try to Download Adobe Flash Player
You get the message because that is exactly the situation. Apple has not allowed any Flash on iOS devices.
What site are you trying to see? Many sites now provide Flash alternatives. For example, if you want to listen to Pandora, instead of using the Flash on the Pandora website, instead you download the Pandora app for the iPad.
In the future, even if Apple wants to add Flash to the iPad, it won't be able to because Adobe will no longer be making it at all, for any mobile device:
    http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/11/adobe-kills-mobile-flash/
If you often go to sites that use a lot of Flash and they don't have an alternative, you should write to them and tell them to stop using Flash.
