Flash IDE Components in Flex 3 Design Mode. Can they be visible there?

Im exploring Flex to get a grasp on its concepts and am currently looking into building components in the Flash IDE. Though i guess its likely that when you're more familiar with Flex you build your components in Flex, like said Im exploring its concepts and like to know where and how the Flash IDE fits in its workflow.
I made a simple Flex Component in the Flex IDE, which shows up fine when I run the Flex project. But it does not show in Flex Design Mode.
I have exported the component from Flash as an SWC and added the SWC to the Flex library path. The symbol in the Flash IDE extends UIMovieClip. Now I read in 'Using Adobe FlexBuilder 3' (p.67) that the Flex Components panel only lists visible components, according to the documentation 'components that extend UIComponent'.
Note that my question is about being visible on the stage in Design Mode, not in the component panel. As UIMovieClip doesnt inherit from UIComponent (and the UIComponent class doesnt seem to be available in the Flash IDE), is this also the cause that the Flash IDE component is not visible on the Flex stage in Design Mode?
Can someone confirm, or deny this?

thanks for your feedback. Reading it back though, Im still not sure whether Flex components build in the Flash IDE (using the Flex Component Kit for Flash CS3) can be visible in Flex 3 Design Mode.Maybe you can be a bit more specific and save a lot of Flex beginners a lot of headaches.
I understand that MXML components can be used in Design Mode. I also understand that if your component is AS you have to create a Library and link that to your project to make them visible in Design Mode. I also understand that Flash Builder 4 does "support rendering of UIMovieClip objects which are in library (swc) and added to the project build path"
This actually doesnt answer my question really. Does this mean there is no way to render Flex components build in the Flash IDE (using the Flex Component Kit for Flash CS3) in Flex 3 Design Mode?

Posing a question for those well versed in flash and flex

I would like to start an off-line communication chat with those of you who are well versed in Flash and Flex.
I've worked with Cold Fusion but I am not up to date on all the technologies available. This seems like the perfect forum for this question.
I simply want to build an application (web or desktop is unknown) in which a person can learn a foreign language, in this case English.
I need some technical advice as to whether Flash, Flex, or a combination of technologies (Cold Fusion for server side functionality) is the best choice for this application. I do not understand the technical aspects of Flash or Flex in building applications so I need the advice of you experts.
As with most foreign language textbooks, audio, or foreign language video training, the material is not interesting, not pertinent to daily life, and is great for late night insomnia. I've never seen any type of foreign language training that is interesting, fun, or uses current events as part of the curriculum.
I would like to illustrate my idea with an example. I want to use an existing English beginners textbook (for kids), scan the images in the textbook, store the content (rules of grammar) in a database and store example sentences in a database.
I would like to record basic audio sentences from the textbook (Do you know tomorrow's weather), incorporate some animation (baseball player hitting a home run), incorporate some basic video (purchasing an item at the grocery store), add a quiz, test question or puzzles, etc..
In addition, since this is a classroom setting and the kids are split into groups, I would like to store a seating chart with the kids names and pictures in a database. After the first segment is finished (e.g. purchasing a toy at the store) the kids next perform an activty. I want to use a combination of audio, video, and animation to explain the activity, give instructions, split the class into groups,and perform the activity.
As I mentioned before, I would like to start an off-line discusion for those of you who are willing to share some of you knowledge and experience with both Flash and Flex. Since you are extremely busy, maybe you might be able to point me in the right direction.
Hopefully, some of you can provide some sound technical advice.

This is an abitious project even for some-one well versed in flex/flash, i have to give you points for outstanding courage on this .
You need to cover quite a few areas in a project like this both for the client and the back end, you need a strong understanding of animation(either through code or the flash timeline), data parsing, logic trees for the quiz/test elements and a lot more before the first line of code would be written.
In Australia there are already a few companies using flex for online educational applications and at least 1 state educational Authority. A search on the internet will find several sites pertaining to flash/flex based online education software and this would be a starting point to give you an idea of the strength flex has in this area.
Beyond this it is not the sort of project that 'help' would be readily available for unless it was relating to very specific issues you could readily define. Also this is not the best forum to request this type of help as the forum is more about testing a beta product. I am sure that if you start learning about flex and have trouble understanding different aspects of how things work there will be plenty of support from the flex community.

Is Flex 4 Training from the source any better than Adobe's own Using Flex 4?

I am preparing for the Flex 4 ACE exam from Using Flex 4. Is there a good reason for me to switch to the training from the source book?

Firstly note that F4TFS is in 2 parts, and although part 2 appears to have been published at the end of 2010, AFAIK it appears to be unavailable right now. I have read F3TFS, and am going through F4TFS at the moment. Using Flex 4, available free as a 32Mb PDF, is a very useful reference, along with the 12 or so other Flex books available free from Adobe. While Using Flex 4 is a reference (including plenty of example code), F3/4TFS is structured as a series of lessons, working on the same project (Flex Grocer shopping cart app) throughout. It touches on most aspects of Flex development, and is a great guide for beginners. If I have one criticism of the book, it is that a shopping cart example is going to be inherently dull- so if you have a low boredom threshold you will have to force yourself through the examples. I would still recommend it as a beginner's book, although in the real world you are unlikely to be using Design Mode much, except for throw-away prototypes. If you have a project you want to get started on right away, then you could just wade in and start coding using the Adobe documentation for help, but if you'd like to have an existing example, then F4TFS is for you.
When learning Flex its best to read as much as possible, so I'd widen your reading if possible to include the Flex 4 Bible, AdvancED Flex 4, Enterprise Development with Flex, etc, and the absolute shedloads of blog posts and examples on the internet.

Flex + BlazeDS

Hello, friends!
I'm new to both Flex and Java.
I'm trying the most simple tutorials (

and doing everything according, but I can't put the Flex working
with the BlazeDS.
I post my doubt on BlazeDS forum, but no one has even
answered.
The question is, when I run my MXML application, I can see
through the Firebug that the 404 (not found) error occurs on "
http://localhost:8080/myfirst/messagebroker/amf".
Until now, I don't even know if the problem is on my MXML
app, on my Java classes, on the config xml files or in my server.
Does anyone know where could be the problem? Or could someone
point out a beginners Flex + BlazeDS tutorial?

make sure tomcat is running, blazeDS is deployed and most
imporantly try accessing

with browser, if blazeDS is deployed you get blank page, if not
than servlet and or/tomcat is not running
based on url :
http://localhost:8080/myfirst/messagebroker/amf".
conclusions are following :
you have webapplication context named "myfirst" deployed
inside webapps directory of tomcat,
(assuming you use tomcat).

Flex Student Information Management Portal help

I am building a student information management portal in flex /php (using AMFPHP), but being a Flex Newbie, I have been researching endless on the internet for help to kick start my project. My project will be interfacing with an oracle database system (which is not an issue, I have already built connection classes in php in my past projects). My problem is binding the data. It appears in my opinion that the data grid is the only way to output the data which will not work efficiently in my case. I need a fluid and flexible layout to present the data within the page. Can the query results be binded say in labels etc and if so, how can this be achieved. Any pointers to tutorial sites for beginners will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I've created the var_text.swf by creating a CP5 project that has the variable with a pre-defined value, and a button to set a new value.
Unfortunately, the project doesn't appear to load due to the errors present.

Flex/Flash Builder version compability

Hi,
I got a question about compability.
My friend created a Flex Project using Flex Builder 3 and Flex SKD 3.6. Now I need to further develop that project possibly without changing much stuff inside it. The best way would be to buy Flex Builder 3 with Flex SDK 3.6. But now I see that Adobe changed names/versions and I'm quite confused about it.
Can I still buy Flex Builder 3 somewhere? It'd be nice coz my friend can teach me how to use it, he didn't work na Flash Builder.
If I change from Flex Builder 3 to Flash Builder 4.6 will there be much differences?
What about SDK versions? Can I work with SDK 3.6 on Flash Builder 4.6?

Flex comes into its own when doing MMXL, where you're using markup language to layout interface components. If you're doing a utility app, that could save you quite a bit of time. If you're doing something more like a game, or graphical scenes rather than entry forms, then Flex might not be of much use.
On the general topic of using powerful editors, you can choose to do everything inside Flash Pro, but still use Flash Builder as the script editor, though right now I can't remember where to set that! If you do investigate Flash Develop, you can create a Flash IDE project, and then Flash Develop will get Flash Pro to do the compiling. It's talked about on this page:

For me though, I like the way I can work just inside Flash Pro. I'm seeing the graphics and the code at the same time, and a lot of what I do involves a combination of how the two work together. I know that I'm missing out on some of the powerful editor features, but Flash Pro has improved over time, and I'm on the Flash Pro pre-release, and can continue to plead with the Flash team to improve it some more!

Sounds like what is happening is that you have apps on your device that were dowloaded while singed into his account and vice versa. (or itunes did not differentiate between the two devices, for whatever reason).
Other than singing into the correct account when updating on the particular device would be to delete any apps that aren't yours and vice versa.
Any apps or content downloaded with one particular account are forvever associated with that account.
So if deleting them did not work, then you'll have to restore the device back to factory settings and then sync or download only your account.
To make sure that this does not happen again, you can either set up two seperate user accounts on the computer your sharing or just sync via icloud instead of with computer.
Again, itunes should have recognised the different devices, but something failed.

Flex application running under AIR takes a long, long time to start.

I have a flex application which runs on a desktop under AIR. The application has an assets folder with 3,500 mp3 soundclips totalling about 50MB. The problem is, the application takes around 90 seconds to load. I'm sure that AIR is scanning the application folder and doing something with the contents because if I delete the assets folder it loads in about 5 seconds. Does anyone know why AIR/Flex would do this, and why it doesn't exhibit the same problem if I run or debug in Flexbuilder on eclipse? It's making my killer app unusable!

Well, I've spent a bit longer looking at this now, and the problem appears to lie with my encrypted local store. The first thing that happens is for the app to read the product key from the ELS. But, it fails (for some unknown reason). So, the app seems to hang there for 90 seconds until it eventually renders the welcome screen. If I remove the assets folder it still fails to read from the ELS, but only takes a couple of seconds to start the welcome screen. This is where the scanning of the application folder seems to come into play, because if I remove the code which reads from the ELS the app starts within 2 seconds whether the asset folder is there or not.
I think the slow startup and the scanning of the assets folder are just symptoms of a different problem, i.e. a problem with the ELS. I don't have the same problem with my development environment though - it's only when I test deploy the application.
Thanks for your help on this problem EgorKDie. I think I should be able to resolve it once I can sort out why the ELS is being awkward.

Is there a way of working collaboratively on a flex project with a small project group?

Is there a way of working collaboratively on a flex project with a small project group?
I am part of a small group of developers who wish to work on a single flex project together. Is there a way to set up flex so that the project can be developed by multiple people at the same time. I have seen one thread out on the internet about working locally and then uploading to SVn but this is not an option in this case.
Any ideas.

I would say that rushing into development without a source-control system will cost you more in the long-run. If your organisation is serious about developing software it then it needs to invest in the necesary infrastructure, so you should get that process kicked-off as soon as possible.
In the interim you could set-up a source control server on one developer's machine or commandeer a spare machine to use as a temporary source control server. Just make sure you have it backed-up regularly. Or you could use one of the online source control services; many will support private repositories for a small fee.

How to get Current Location in a Android Emulator using Flex

Geolocation isn't supported in the Emulator. You'll have to set up a test case that gives the geolocation without relying on the Emulator.
