Flickr Refresh Rate Apple TV

I have a Flickr account which I often post new pictures to. I want my Apple TV to automatically cycle through the account, but to recognise the new pictures and add them to the slideshow as they are uploaded to Flickr.
Can anyone tell me how often the Apple TV polls Flickr for new images when it is running a slideshow?
Thanks in advance!

Anyone come up with an answer to this one? I'm hoping Flickr or Me.com will refresh at some point when they system is running. Guess I could load some images and wait and see...but hoping an answer exists.

  • Apple TV 3 Refresh Rate

Why doesn't the Apple TV 3 allow a refresh rate of 24fps? I read somewhere that the Apple TV 2 only output at 25 or 30fps because 720p/24 wasn't an official standard.
But 1080p/24 is! The content sold on iTunes is 1080p/24 and Blu-ray players and modern HD televisions use this standard, so I don't understand why the Apple TV 3 only outputs at 25 or 30fps. In either of those refresh rates, you get a stutter every second or so when playing 24fps content. It's really annoying.

    Use this link:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html
The truth is here that Apple have always regarded this item as a hobby, and treat the item as a convenience rather than a quality media product.  Even though many people may not notice the absence of 24fps output, I think it's one of those expectations for consumer AV devices now, even cheap ones.
One thing to remember however is not to confuse the refresh rate with the video encoding rate.
I think from memory most iTunes movies will be encoded at 24 fps, just output at 50Hz/60Hz depending on the connection.
With 25 fps 'PAL' or NTSC near 30 fps source video (eg from camcorders) however 50Hz/60Hz make sense but there would be further compromises if this material was output at 24 fps.
AppleTV 1 maxed out decoding 720p at 24 fps (25fps if lucky), and choked on 30 fps, but AppleTV 2 allowed decoding of at least 720p 30 fps, and the newer version should manage 1080p at up to 30 fps rates.
I'm with you and would prefer the lower film like 24 fps quality rates where the source is 24 fps and TV can handle it, there are counter arguments from those who feel more is better in terms of frame rate of course.
I think there are further complexities with motion artefact on AppleTVs beyond simple frame rate - for example I can watch a DVD on a TV and it looks smooth, but may see motion artefact in a file encoded for AppleTV of the same material. h264 may achieve better compression than MPEG2 but something must be lost.

  • Apple 23" Cinema Refresh Rate (Hz) issue

hey everyone, just got a new apple monitor for christmas and i absolutely adore it. one thing that is really bugging me though is the refresh rate. my old CRT monitor i got quite used to 100hz playing first person shooters, i feel with the 60hz default it is not smooth at all when playing action games. is there a way to change this? i've tried almost everything.
    thanks in advance

The 23" at 1920 x 1200, 60Hz is pushing the limit of its single-link DVI port. It cannot run any faster. CRTs needed faster refresh to stop flicker. LCDs don't have flicker, but do have a slight lag. There is nothing you can do about it.

  • Macs Won't Forget Refresh Rate - LCD Refresh Out of Range

I have a new Viewsonic LCD for an old G4. I had to use an ADC to DVI adapter.
The first time I booted up my Mac, the monitor worked fine. I went into the Display Preferences and, like an idiot, I selected 90 hz because, like an idiot, I thought 90 hz was better than 60 hz.
My screen went black and the monitor said "Frequency out of range", etc. I have talked to AppleCare and I have tried everything and nothing I do gets this Mac to revert to 60 hz at 1280 x 1024.
    Tried zapping PRAM, didn't work.
Tried booting into Safe Mode and selecting another resolution. I do that, reboot, it reboots in that lower resolution. I select 1280 x 1024 and my screen goes black because it's going into that 90 hz.
    Created another account, didn't work.
I plugged in my old CRT into the VGA port. I was able to select 1280 x 1024 at 60 hz. Turned off the Mac. Plugged in the LCD. Turned the Mac back on and it went black.
It does this when you log in. The actual bootup is in 1280 x 1024 60 hz. I get the login screen fine. It's when I log in, into any account, it goes back to that 90 hz mode.
In Windows, if you select a resolution or refresh rate, a dialog comes up asking you if this mode is OK and if after 15 seconds you don't click on anything, it reverts back to the original resolution. Apple doesn't want to do that, I guess, because they want me to use their monitors.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

You should probably just trash the preferences file(s). That will give you a fresh start with the Viewsonic. See this thread:

  • Max refresh rate Macbook PRO -- LG TV

    Hello,
I am connecting my LG LN5700 TV with a max refresh rate of 120 Hz to my Macbook Pro via HDMI using the cables listed below. However, the display settings on connection only show option for frequency upto 60 Hz (and mentions NTSC in paranthesis). Any ideas why I am not able to access the max refresh rate ? The HDMI cable claims to support higher refresh rates. Could the mac_disp --> HDMI be the bottleneck ?

Not that I know of... for display on my LG TV, I used to use a Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort -> HDMI adapter. But I ran it through the HDMI on my Denon reciever and then to my LG TV. If you've an extra HDMI port on your LG, you could use the same adapter -> here.

  • Changing refresh rate blanks screen indefinitely

    Hi all,
I'm new to the mac world and I was exploring OSX upon bringing my new Mac Pro home.
I have an old 17" Benq LCD monitor (upgrading soon) that I had hooked up using the analog to DVI adapter. I've heard that LCD's usually always are set at 60Hz but stupid me had to try other refresh rates. I set the refresh rate to 80Hz and the screen went blank and a box came up stating the refresh rate was "out of range".
I thought that it would automatically revert a la XP but after 5 minutes nothing. So in the meantime I just swapped to a different video output on the video card.
Could someone please tell me how I can revert the refresh rate to 60Hz so that DVI output can be utilized.
    Thanks for reading!

Use the "Gather Windows" button in the "Display" pane of "Displays" System Preference. You can change setting for both displays from one display. You can also check "Show displays in menu bar" to get control of both displays.
Resetting PRAM, or a Safe Boot might help.

  • LCD refresh rate

I just got my first Mac, so far I'm loving it. I have a 20.1" Viewsonic vx2025 with a horizontal sync range of 30-82 KHz and a vertical refresh range of 50-75 Hz. The Mini correctly set the right native resolution of 1680x1050, but the refresh rate is set to 60, with no other rates available.
I've had a similar struggle with LCDs on Linux (won't go over 60 Hz) and was told that Linux won't do over 60 Hz because that's what LCDs should refresh at. So I wanted to check if Tiger is the same.

If I'm using the term Refresh Rate incorrectly it's because Apple, GNOME/KDE, and Microsoft are all using it incorrectly. If a dialog window to configure my display settings calls a field "Refresh Rate" (and all 4 of them do call it just that) than that's what I call it too.

  • Can't change Refresh Rate

To try to get my new Samsung LN-R268W monitor to show what's on the screen of my Power Book G4 (OS 10.4.5), the lady at Samsung Customer Support said I need to make sure my Refresh Rate is 60 hertz. System Preferences>Displays>Color LCD>Display had the Refresh Rate showing a greyed-out "n/a." Advice?

Is this before or after you've got the image on your
Samsung? If it's before you've connected it, or used
the F7 key to toggle to mirror/span mode, the only
display you'll see under System Preferences is the
built in display. And the refresh rate for that will
    be "n/a".
Most monitors will be auto-detected by OS X, and the
refresh rate will be set without any input. My 20"
widescreen Dell LCD automagically defaults to 60Hz.
At any rate, refresh rates for LCDs are kind of
meaningless - they don't actually refresh like old
    CRT monitors do.

You're right. Today I learned from talking to somebody that I should turn on my monitor before I turn on my laptop. Page 53 of the Apple manual "Getting Started With Your Powerbook G4" suggested the opposite. However, if I had read page 53 and its reference to page 97 more carefully, I would have checked the "mirroring" box.

  • PowerMac G4 533DA & HDTV - video resolution / refresh rate problem

Hope someone can help, I need to access more resolution / refresh rates than I currently get in the Leopard display control:
I have a PowerMac G4 533 Digital Audio running Leopard 10.5.8 (unsupported).  It has an upgraded AGP videocard, a ( flashed PC - RV200 chipset) Radeon 7500 w/ 64MB and a DVI output w/ a VGA adapter.  I have used this Mac perfectly with my 19" widescreen Samsung SyncMaster 940BW, at a resolution of 1440 x 900 / 60Hz / millions of colors.  This monitor is actually for my MacPro, but I used it for the G4 to set it up.
I  moved it to my living room to use as a basic HTPC.  Since it runs Leopard, it has up to date VLC, Quicktime for video files and a working Superdrive for movies.  I don't expect it to play anything more than 480p properly, I think that was the best I got on YouTube.  But if I have a DVD ripped to DivX or MP4 it plays them fine on the Samsung monitor.
I connected it to my Viewsonic N3760w 37" 1080 HDTV.  It turns on, gray screen w/ Apple and gives me a working desktop.  The problem is that I cannot get it to give me the correct resolution and more importantly it seem to have the wrong refresh rate.  It is currently set at 1280 x 768 / 60Hz / millions of colors.  The screen give me like a small line slowly moving up across screen, higher refresh rates only make it movie faster up the screen.
According to my Viewsonic, these are the resolutions for computer using the VGA plug on the tv:
    PC - 1360x768 (preferred) , 1024x768, 1280x768
    Mac G3/G4/G5 - up to 1280 x 1024, 1280x720 (preferred)
Please note all of these are lower resolution than my Samsung monitor.  My Viewsonic also has on screen adjustment of " phase " and " frequency " as well as the usual color, contrast, etc available.  Is there a 3rd party app to manually adjust the resoluion and refresh rate?  I have seen Windows programs, does one exist for Mac OS X?
TIA, sorry for the long post

My Viewsonic also connected by VGA, no problem.
I wish I knew more. I checked out the app you did a trial of. I noticed this statement on their web site:  Quote
    "After rebooting monitor stays blank
For some reason your monitor does not accept the installed frequency. SWITCH IT OFF!"
This is the type of statement that would 'worry me.' -- having the phrase: SWITCH IT OFF! all in caps seems to imply a possibility of damage...which I mentioned in my initial post. (and the site goes on to talk about how you should even then connect another monitor to change the settings you've made that were not accepted).
As I said, though, I wish I knew more for sure about this. It seems that you not only did the obvious of checking System Peferences>Display, but also realize the Viewsonic has buttons that can influence it's screen image, most about position of the image on the screen but at least one item about resolution on mine. (under Setup Mode)
For what it's worth, my Viewsonic is about 6 years old now, still fine, and has eight (8) possible resolutions shown in System Preferences.
    Re: Your numbers.
    It is currently set at 1280 x 768 / 60Hz / millions of colors.
    PC - 1360x768 (preferred) , 1024x768, 1280x768
    Mac G3/G4/G5 - up to 1280 x 1024, 1280x720 (preferred)
If you're only talking about a difference of 1280 x 768 and G4 1280 x 1024, perhaps just stretching the picture using the Viewsonic buttons is the way to go.
Or, from the numbers, perhaps the G4 just wants a resolution closest to it's preferred state!?
    Anyhow, good luck.

  • 24" iMac refresh rate

I am having all those horrible problem with battlefield 2142 that everyone else is having, but i just found the file that has all the configurations for the game, such as the screen resolutions. My normal resolution is at 1920x1200, but the game resolution is stuck at 1024x800 @ 60hz. i tried to enter the larger resolutions including 1920x1200 but the game just crashes. SO thinking about it i think i have the wrong refresh rate. i went through system preferences and at the refresh rate says "n/a" as seen here....
i also checked system profiler... nothing....

that being said does anyone know the refresh rates for the reolutions of the 24" iMac?
the help would be greatly appreciated by many including myself x100....

    Roger Wilmut1 wrote:
I suspect that 'refresh rate' is only applicable to CRT monitors: my flat-panel iMac has it greyed out as well.
Not sure if the lack of refresh rate selection is normal for an iMac, but I can defnitely select the refresh for my 17" LCD monitor.
It seems more likely that the game simply won't work at higher than 1024x800 - particularly as 1920x1200 is a widescreen format and the game very likely wants a 4x3 format. Try setting your monitor to 1024x768
Some games will refuse to run at resolutions lower than 1024x768 or 800x600, but I've never heard of a game that would refuse to be set at a higher resolution…

  • Problem with ATV refresh rates and frame rates

I live in Australia and as such I am subject to PAL, so when I set my ATV up I set it to 720P 50Hz, when I purchased a TV season the episodes were running at 25fps and played back flawlessly with no dropped or added frames. My problem occurs when I download movies, all the movies I have bought are running at 24fps and suffer from quite noticeable jitter, almost like the 24th frame is duplicated and added as the 25th frame, I assume it is something like this as the pause happens every second.
So has anyone had a problem similar to this and if so what do you do about it?
Does the ATV playback all sources (24/25) smoothly even if it has to convert?
Could it be caused by my TV?
Any help to any of these questions would be great.
    Thanks.
    Tim.

With my particular Apple TV setup and TV combination, I find that setting to 1080p (60hZ) gives my the best all-round round results.
This does result in -slightly- jerky motion with 25fps material (especially old British TV shows), but it's bearable. It's particularly noticeable with sideways scrolling text and credits.
The one thing that is peculiar on my setup is if I use 720p (either @60hz or 50hz) and watch an iTunes-purchased HD episode that is encoded at 24fps I get very odd motion effects indeed. Every few seconds the video appears to speed up almost like it is 'catching up' with lost frames - very hard to explain exactly how it looks. Anyway I set to 1080p and this effect is gone completely. It also goes away if I set to 1080i. I think something queer is going on with 720p on the Apple TV (at least with my TV there is). This happens with both HDMI and component outputs.
It may be worth trying 1080i at either 50 or 60Hz if your set can't do 1080p.
I would also suggest that 60hz in theory should give a smoother motion for 24fps playback than 50Hz.
My basic problem with all this is that on even a cheap DVD player if a disk is 50Hz, the player switches to 50Hz output and if it is 60Hz, it will change to 60Hz. The Apple TV stays fixed. It's a shame it can't autoswitch refresh rates.

  • Refresh rate

How do you change the refresh rate on an apple monitors?
I went into the system preferences under displays the refresh rate button was there but not lit up.
I need to see what my refresh rate is and how to change it.

60 Hz is the standard for LCDs and can't be changed.

  • The refresh rate for Mac mini 2014 at 3840x2160 using Thunderbolt

    Here: http://www.apple.com/mac-mini/specs/

I'm wondering if it's the same using Thunderbolt, or more correctly DisplayPort.

    Ok, thanks!
If I could ask another question regarding this... is 30 Hz poor even for desktop work? Or movies.
I believe the 30Hz is progressive and therefore for movies/video would normally look quite good. However for sports e.g. soccer which has a fast moving object i.e. the ball it would be less good. I have also seen comments suggesting that for computer use it is also less desirable particularly when you are scrolling as this entails affectively the entire screen image 'moving fast'.
This is not based on personal use as I cannot afford a 4K screen yet myself. However for DVDs 24p is considered a to give a good image for movies and this I can confirm from personal experience so 30p should be even better. Obviously 60p is better still but for that you need either a Mac Pro, iMac or MacBook Pro Retina.
It is probably going to depend on what you will be using it for. Perhaps you should consider spending a little more for a MacBook Pro Retina which can do 60 Hz.

  • Suggested Resolution & Refresh Rate for 19-inch Monitor

Just had to replace my old 17-inch Apple Graphite Display. I stayed with a CRT and found a new 19-inch Dell M993s for pretty cheap.
Now I'm trying to decide what the best screen resolution and refresh rate is...
The HTML files that came on the Dell CD-ROM give recommended optimal settings for Windows OS's. But I'm not sure I should go by those for Tiger.
    Any suggestions?

Just to make it completely clear
You need to have the screen refresh rate set above 75hz so that screen refresh is less visible, the lower the number the slower the refresh rate and therefore the more visible it is and the more strain on the eye. The higher the refresh rate the better.
Find the resolution which gives you 85hz or higher and which also makes best use of screen without making everything really small and hard to see or to read.
    I have a 19" Lacie and have it set to 1280 x 1024 85hz refresh rate.
