Fluxbox + Xinerama = fglrx problems

Hi everyone,
I'm new to Arch Linux, I have two years experience using (X)Ubuntu.
I've installed fluxbox as my WM and wanted to use two screens! I've got it all working via the aticonfig, which gave me a dual screen setup (amdccle calls it Single). After that I've enabled Xinerama in my xorg.conf which in turn gave some other troubles.
First fglrxinfo gives a blank line. glxgears shows an error:
$ glxgears
XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0.0"
after 2359 requests (2358 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
* From the top of my head
Why googling the problem I've only found that fluxbox needs to be build with Xinerama support! Is this the done with the package in pacman? Probably yes as Xinerama works partly!
Thanks in advance for any help and pointers!
Grtz,
Arjan Gelderblom

  • ADSL / fglrx problems after system update [Solved]

I'm hoping that somebody will be able to help me with this as I'm struggling to find the answer elsewhere in this forum. I recently installed Arch 0.7.2 base. I then got my internet connection sorted using my speedtouch modem as per the instructions on the Wiki. (using pppoa). I the installed xorg7, and gnome. I installed the ati-fglrx drivers from the instructions on the wiki. Up to this point, everything was working just fine.
I then decided to update the system so I did a pacman -Syu and all seemed to go well. After rebooting the machine, it would not start x and from the debug messages on the screen it seemed to be saying that it was having a problem loading the fglrx module.
I thought that I would try uninstalling the fglrx packages, then reinstalling and reconfiguring. I uninstalled them but then discovered that when I tried to download anything, my connection would be lost within a few seconds and wouldn't let me reconnect. The only way to reconnect was to reboot first. (I did find out that I had to do a modprobe ppp-generic first in order to connect since the update)
I then deleted my xorg.conf, and created another using hwd -x and then managed to get back into gnome using the default drivers - but obviously with no 3d acceleration. (I have a radeon 9500pro by the way). I tried connecting again and this time tested the connection through firefox. I managed to open 1 webpage before losing my connection again.
I'm sorry that I cannot post any logs just at the moment as I'm at work although I can later on. I'm just wondering for now if these problems seem familiar to anyone?

I have exactly the same problem as atalman.
My modem works fine, I can play eternal-lands/browse webpages for hours on end, but as soon as the modem is under any kind of heavy load, ie: ktorrent, amule, ebay (lots of images and open in new tabs) the connection dies..
    I try
    killall pppd
    usually to find
    pppd: no process killed
    , so I then try
    pppd call speedtch
which lets me know that the modem is already connected??
So I have to unplug/replug the modem in, pppd call speedtch, then it connects again on a different 'channel'.
dmesg shows no errors, I have enabled debug in the pppd settings which shows nothing, my firmwares are correct as Ive used the same on Slackware and Arch for ages. I originally thought the modem(rev 4) was dying so I swapped it over for my backup, an older manta/stingray  version, different (working) firmware but all the same problems.

  • Fglrx problem

    startx won't work
it's the first time i ever try arch linux (as if it isn't obvious) i got it working on my virtual machine but not on the real thing
i installed it normally, i got libgl, xorg, mesa and then the ati cataclyst driver from their website, it installed it
i aticonfig --initialconfig, i inserted fglrx in modules in rc.conf and when i try to startx:

fglrx is just the name of the kernel module; the official driver name--and therefore the package name--is  catalyst-*.  The different varieties of it can be found in the Arch User Repository; there's an article in the wiki on ATI-Catalyst covering the package details installation.  It's best to use one of the AUR packages than to install manually, since you can use pacman to track the package and easily install an update.  I use catalyst-generator, since it's usually up-to-date and allows me to easily rebuild the module every time there's a kernel update.  If you want to use one of these packages, make sure you read up on ABS too.
As for xf86-video-ati: Depending on your graphics card, you may be able to play games in wine using it.  If you want to give it a shot, just look at the ATI section of the wiki.  DO NOTE: you will need to undo the changes you've made by installing the fglrx module to get it working (changes in mkinitcpio.conf, rc.conf, menu.lst, etc).  If possible, it might be best to work from a tty and follow the instructions to the letter.

  • Ati-fglrx problem.

    Hello.
I've just started using Arch and i really like it. Very clean and efficient.
I do have a problem however, with the ati-fglrx.
I have a radeon X1600 video card. After i've installed xorg and did hwd to make a xorg.conf everything works fine.
Then i install ati-fglrx with pacman, add fglrx to the modules line in rc.conf. Then i let aticonfig modify the xorg.conf.
When i start xorg, the screen goes black and the system halts. I've tried some example xorg.confs and modified them to my system, but all with the same outcome.
When i remove ati-fglrx with pacman and start xorg, it works again.
Also, using lsmod fglrx is in the list.
    My most recent xorg.conf:

Yeah it does seem like a driver bug, aticonfig can't make a proper xorg.conf for whatever reason. I had trouble using 'Xorg --configure" as well.
Here's my WORKING xorg.conf, ati-fglrx version 8.33.6-3 (extremely bleeding edge) and kernel 2.6.20-2 (also extremely bleeding edge.. i.e .last night)

  • Fglrx problems

    hi
    this is my first post
I use arch about 3 weeks, and today I installed a kernel manually.
before I used the default kernel and I had install the fglrx and fglrx-utils pkg and the ati drivers work correctly.
but now i have uninstall the fglrx and fglrx-utils, i install a new kernel manually (2.6.20-beyond2 not pkgbuild) and i have installed after the ati driver with the installer.
the installer dont output me errors, but now the 3d acc dont works:

Well, one thing you could do is just update the beyond fglrx package manually for every update (you could find it in the arch CVS attic), and run makepkg on it - that way it could still be tracked by pacman.  The beyond kernel patchset is no longer being created, which is why -beyond drivers are no longer in the repos, so you'd have to re-build the module every time the drivers update to keep the versions in sync.

  • Fglrx problem or network problem?

I have noticed that my computer loads xorg MUCH faster when the network isn't active. if I have my ADSL turned off and reboot my PC. Once logged in, I guess xorg decides loopback mode is used? This is really confusing me!

? it's worth to take look at the log files at server side along with IIS logs to get some more clues. Have you already taken some network trace ..this would also can provide some clues.

  • SOLVED Fluxbox and Nitrogen problem

Ok so I've tried many ways to set my background in Fluxbox. I try not to ask for help but this is really frustrating me. So I installed nitrogen, went to the directory my background is at, and hit apply, and it worked. So then I went to my  ~/.fluxbox/startup  file and added in "nitrogen --restore &" like below. However it didn't work. I really want this to work, I spent a large amount of time earlier today trying to get fbsetbg to work, then trying to get feh to work, none of it worked for me.
    # Applications you want to run with fluxbox.
    # MAKE SURE THAT APPS THAT KEEP RUNNING HAVE AN ''&'' AT THE END.
    # unclutter -idle 2 &
    # wmnd &
    # wmsmixer -w &
    # idesk &
    nitrogen --restore &
    # And last but not least we start fluxbox.
    # Because it is the last app you have to run it with ''exec'' before it.
Last edited by Spheres (2012-08-05 23:09:15)

    Not necessarily.
Do any other apps you put in ~/.fluxbox/startup run?
Check /usr/share/xsessions/fluxbox.desktop and make sure it says "exec startfluxbox" and not just "exec fluxbox"
I'm starting fluxbox from .xinitrc with "exec startfluxbox" and if I set wallpaper with feh, this works in my ~/.fluxbox/startup file:
    eval $(cat ~/.fehbg)
and if I set wallpaper with nitrogen, this works:
    nitrogen --restore
(edit) -- as ewaller says, have you set a wallpaper with nitrogen? "nitrogen --restore" won't work unless you do...

  • Fluxbox application-start-problem!

    Hello!
I'm using fluxbox on my PC. I added some applications to the fluxbox menu (e.g. amule, azureus, thunar) When I click on the amule-menu-entry the application starts. But when I click on azureus and thunar, there are no reaction.
I must open a console (eterm) and type "thunar" or "azureus" to start the applications. It looks like fluxbox don't know the path to thunar and azureus because the binary isn't in /usr/bin.
But I can start thunar and azurues at console without any errors.
    My menu file:
    [begin] (Fluxbox-1.0rc3)
    [exec] (Eterm) {Eterm}
    [exec] (GVim) {gvim}
    [exec] (Thunar) {thunar}
    [submenu] (FileSharing)
    [exec] (aMule) {amule}
    [exec] (Azureus) {azureus}
    [end]
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for help!
    Greetings,
    Flasher

I logged the $PATH variable in the rc.d script and only the following paths are setted "/bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin"
OK, at least I think I can now explain the above behavior:
At the time when your $PATH variable is /bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin, thunar cannot be found because /opt/xfce4/bin isn't included yet and azureus because AFAIK it's a java application and needs java to run, which likely to be located in /opt/java/jre/bin (strange, mine is in /opt/java/bin, might be due to different versions...?).
Flasher wrote:---> the path variable changed after starting the daemons (including x-server and fluxbox) by rc.conf
Have you listed these daemons as the last in the DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf or are there maybe some important services at the end, which might change the $PATH variable? Or you could try to add the source /etc/profile command into your rc.d script and log the $PATH variable again to see if the other paths are now included.

  • System Hangs on X-kill, reboot, or shutdown [an fglrx problem].

I'm pretty sure this is linked with my new monitor somehow. I got a new monitor, its hooked up with the DVI cable. Whenever I try to:
    exit openbox
    ctrl-alt-backspace to kill x
    restart (shutdown -r now)
    or shutdown (shutdown - now)
my system hangs. My screen shuts off, and starts blinking the power button, and its not responding.

I've no idea whether it's possible for a new monitor to somehow cause this... are you running ATI or nVidia drivers? Is direct rendering working, do you know?
    Try doing
    $ sudo chown -r yourNonRootUser /path/to/yourNonRootUsersHome
and seeing whether that remedies the problem with exiting openbox.
Also, look in /var/log/ for your Xorg.#.log files (I forget whether they're in a subdirectory in there... maybe under /var/log/x11/  ). See whether the most recent log file has any warnings or errors (EE or WW in brackets) that may indicate the source of the problem.

  • [Fluxbox] Fails to spawn graphical apps

Hi folks, I've got an interesting problem with my freshly installed fluxbox. I was using fluxbox with no problem before I reinstalled my system — all "~/.fluxbox/keys" working, all "~/.fluxbox/apps" working, etc. — and so I transferred my "~/.fluxbox/" directly over to my new system in the hope that I could continue where I left off. However, now my ":Exec" keys cannot generate X applications, nor can my ":RootMenu". The ":Exec" key to open ":RootMenu" (Control Escape) works, but when I select either "xterm" or "Run" — the only two apps I have in there — neither of them open. Fortunately, my "~/.fluxbox/startup" contains `terminal`, and happily that does open when fluxbox starts, and I can open all of my X apps from the command line, but this is a bit of a circuitous way to go about opening, for example, Writer, when I have a shortcut bound to it in "~/.fluxbox/keys".
Has anyone encountered a problem similar to this, or have any suggestions as to how I can solve it?
`xev` provides the following output when I press "Ctrl+w":
KeyPress event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x1800001,
    root 0xaa, subw 0x0, time 153392505, (-171,408), root:(480,425),
    state 0x4, keycode 25 (keysym 0x77, w), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (17) ""
    XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (17) ""
    XFilterEvent returns: False
(Within the quote marks is actually an unknown character, thus:)
while a "w" alone produces this:
KeyPress event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x1800001,
    root 0xaa, subw 0x0, time 153550462, (169,177), root:(820,194),
    state 0x0, keycode 25 (keysym 0x77, w), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (77) "w"
    XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (77) "w"
    XFilterEvent returns: False
    if this is relevant.
    Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the delay, folks: I've been a little unwell.
Yeah, you're right, rockin turtle, my keys are setup the same. I've since tried my `sudo poweroff` shortcut (pastebin, l.102) and can confirm that that works, so it seems that it's only the shortcuts which need to draw a window, such as, e.g. firefox (l.152) which don't function. The only exception to this, is that the shortcut for fluxbox's :RootMenu (l.168) does work. I've tried running fluxbox as a fresh user with no configuration, and discovered that, while the :RootMenu does pop up, it cannot spawn xterm. I now think the problem isn't so much with the keyboard shortcuts, but with fluxbox's ability to spawn graphical apps. Would it be possible that fluxbox is having a problem communicating with Xorg and perhaps doesn't know which display to try and draw apps on?
yvonney, I've installed xmonad and tried to boot into it, only to discover that I'll have to create a config before I can make any sense of it. I'll try and do that, and if xmonad fails to spawn apps then I'll assume that the problem is with my Xorg config, and not just fluxbox.

  • Catalyst/fglrx startx freeze - blank/black screen

Sometimes, usually the second or third time I use startx after a reboot, video is not displaying.  I get a black screen (blank) with no cursor and no windows of any sort.  Ctrl+Alt+F[1-12] does not work at all.  The system is unresponsive.  I'm not sure whether the system is locking up or if video is just not displaying.
My graphics card is a "Mobility Radeon 9600 M10"
The Xorg doesn't appear to have any errors either.  Here's the log from when Xorg failed:
    http://www.lastholdout.com/foo/xorg/Xorg.fail
Also, here's my xorg.conf file.  I generated it using 'sudo aticonfig --initial':
    http://www.lastholdout.com/foo/xorg/xorg.conf
    Notice that I added:
       Option      "UseInternalAGPGART"         "no"
       Option      "KernelModuleParm"           "agplock=0"
around line 135 for good measure since Arch's Wiki says that those options may help prevent lockups.
I've had this problem at least since 2.6.22.  Back in December, I switched back to the open source ATI driver.  As of late, system performance has been a real drag, and other than this strange behavior, catalyst seems to do a better job.  Is anyone else having this problem?

    Sorry,
I'd pretty much given up on this - I know it sounds strange, but this only affects me at home, when I turn on the laptop at work, it works perfectly every time.  If I try using the work network profile at home it sometimes randomly works.
I did a bit more digging into this, and running a strace produced lots of ioctl messages:
    15692 open("/dev/dri/card0", O_RDWR)    = 10
    15692 write(0, "drmOpenDevice: open result is 10,"..., 39) = 39
    15692 write(0, "drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor retu"..., 40) = 40
    15692 ioctl(10, 0xc03064a6, 0x7fffc8705010) = 0
    15692 ioctl(10, 0xc03064a6, 0x7fffc8705010) = 0
    15692 ioctl(10, 0xc03064a6, 0x7fffc8705010) = 0
    15692 ioctl(10, 0xc03064a6, 0x7fffc8705010) = 0
    15692 ioctl(10, 0xc03064a6, 0x7fffc8705010) = 0
(about 2,000,000 or so before I managed to kill X)
i don't think this is a wireless issue any more, it is more than likely a fglrx problem, but I doubt we will get any luck trying to get support out of ATI, in the meantime I will just end up constantly rebooting my laptop until it decides to work.
BTW I have also seen this happen under Mandriva when network profiles were used, but never got a chance to dig into it very much.
As I type this I am looking at it a bit more closely and I can see that in the same strace I also get:
    15692 open("/dev/dri/card0", O_RDWR)    = 11
    15692 write(0, "drmOpenDevice: open result is 11,"..., 39) = 39
    15692 write(0, "drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor retu"..., 40) = 40
which makes me think that X has opened the DRI device twice and there may be some kind of race condition going on here, at which point I am in way too deep and if there is anyone here with clue, please help.
    Cheers

  • Xinerama with some CDE utilities

Problem - two SunRay 3+ clients on (SRS 4.2 from SRSS 5.1.2 with all latest patch of Solaris) in multihead configuration with Xinerama enabled on Sol x86 CDE - can't run few CDE utilities, like dtfile (just does not show window), dtpad (no window) and dtcalc (core dump). Interestingly it does not work even if I try run these utilities with ssh -X tunneling from Sol 9 SPARC host.
However if I disable Xinerama with utconfig -x off everything works just fine. Tried giving different -display options, still the same. This thing is working perfectly with ancient SRS 3.1.
Any clues ? Logged case but support is pretty useless, i.e. nothing that I knew already.

Sorry this doesn't really help with the Xinerama problem, but since you are using the nvidia driver, have you considered using Twinview instead? You could do composite stuff too with Twinview - last I knew, Xinerama had problems with things that want to use compositing. I don't know how your setup is but if you're not set on using Xinerama, it might be an option to consider.

  • [SOLVED]Xorg crash with some applications when using double screen

    Hi,
I have a TV that I often use to watch dvd from my computer, and to do that I've set it up as a second screen in my xorg.conf, but on a daily basis I use a xorg.conf file with only my main screen. Up until last week I was able to use my second screen without problem, but yesterday I tried and it crashed instantly.
So I ran a few tests, amsn and vlc seems to be 2 applications that makes X crash (though there might be other, but I seem to be able to use chromium firefox and ktorrent just fine).
My WM is not to blame, I've launched X without any WM and vlc still makes X crash.
The problem does not happen when using a single screen.
I thought that my xorg.conf might be the problem, so I used nvidia-settings to create a new one, but that didn't change anything.
Here are my xorg.conf used for dual screen, and the logfile from the Xorg crash:
    # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig

Sorry this doesn't really help with the Xinerama problem, but since you are using the nvidia driver, have you considered using Twinview instead? You could do composite stuff too with Twinview - last I knew, Xinerama had problems with things that want to use compositing. I don't know how your setup is but if you're not set on using Xinerama, it might be an option to consider.

  • SOLVED: Xorg crash with 4.0.4, xorg 1.17.1-5, nvidia 352.09

    Hi,
xorg crashes for me with a segfault with these versions, first line of the backtrace mentions /usr/lib/xorg-server/Xorg (OsLookupColor+0x119) [0x594a29].
Anyone else seeing the same? I'll try with the previous NVIDIA driver in the meantime.
    Thanks
edit: Solved by using nvidia 349.16, works now.

  • Is there a terminal out there for me?

I'm sure this has been discussed several times before, but I want to find the right terminal for me. So, this is not another "which xyz-app is best?" thread, but rather a question if I have overlooked something.
    My candidates so far:
    konsole
    Terminal (xfce)
    rxvt
    mrxvt
    urxvt
    xterm
    eterm
    aterm
Dylan may be able to say, "You and me, we had it all", but I cant say the same: they all fall short on some account. I thought I had found a sweetheart in mrxvt, but alas...
    My criteria are:
    - speed: ideally I press f12 and the terminal is there. Konsole fails, Terminal is a little better, the rest are decent-to-good.
    - tabs: It's great to have them. I can then have one instance open on all desktops, ready at hand whenever I need it. Nice and orderly. It may also affect speed, but not all the candidates perform equally well: Terminal takes just as long time to open a new tab as to open a new shell altogether. Mrxvt and Konsole win here: the new tabs are there immediately.
    - fonts: this is important to me. I would love to be able to use proportional fonts in the console, but antialiased, truetype fonts is a minimum requirement. The *term consoles - can they use truetype fonts? This is where mrxvt fails, and capitally, I think: no unicode support (?), and the line drawings in mc don't work with tt fonts. I can start mc with an -a flag, but it's not ideal.
    - configurability: they all have it, I suppose. After spending some hours looking into the X system for configuration, I can't say I dislike it, although I can't really say I like it either. A balance between accessibility (e.g. through menus) and wealth of options (through looooong lists of settings in ***rc files), is ideal.
    So my judgement:
mrxvt: if it wasn't for the font issue...
Terminal: if it wasn't for the slowness, especially with new tabs...
    Konsole: dito, especially at startup
xterm: ugly... if only I could find out how to use some nicer fonts... And no tabs. Same goes for the other *terms and the *xvts
Have I overlooked some must-have candidate which fulfills all my dreams? or some feature in some of the current candidates, which raises it to the top of my list?

This is becoming something of an ordeal.
First urxvt: I couldn't get a tabbar no matter what I did. In the end, I reinstalled perl (I had the version from testing, so I downgraded to current), and everything worked fine. YES! I could see an app with potential.
In the meantime, I had also had yakuake running, and I can't say for sure what went wrong, but some time while I was trying to remap the keyboard shortcuts to let yakuake have F12 and urxvt shift-F12, something must have gone wrong, because every time I now open urxvt, the window shrinks slowly to a tiny little square, just big enough to grab and resize. The changes stay, but it seems very unstable - the window borders seem to be uncertain if they really want to stay in place.
I've tried to make some application-specific settings for the size, but that has been its own can of worms: (1) the only application specific size setting that works, is "force", which is hardly what I want. (2) in general, if I go to "Application specific settings from the window menu, the field in the Window tab is filled with sth like "Application settings for <...>", but not in this case; that field is empty, and I'm warned that the settings i'm about to make, will apply to ALL windows, globally. If I do make some settings, with the correct info in the Window tab in place, this is not remembered the next time I open the app.
I've uninstalled yakuake (thinking that that may have been the problem, since the behaviour is vaguely similar to that of yakuake), but the problem persist.
Does anyone know where the problem lies? I have tried to check the settings in ~/.kde/share/config, but haven't found anything there.
In fluxbox, the shrinking problem does not happen, so it seems to be a KDE problem, but there's another one: the urxvt specific settings I have made in .Xresources do not apply. Phew. Perhaps I should just have stayed with the xfce Terminal...
