Font Book Management

Can someone tell me if I disable a font or fonts in Font Book, do they stay disabled until I enable them or do they become enabled when I log out and log back into the account? I want to disable a good number of fonts that I do not use that came with the OS. Are there some fonts that are required?

The font list has been updated for 10.6.
+OS X, 10.6 has changed font formats, though the main list of fonts is little different. Apple has done away with their proprietary .
format and has replaced them with standard TrueType OpenType fonts, which have a .ttf or .ttc extension. There are a handful of .dfonts left in the /System/Library/Fonts/ folder, but for the most part, they're obsolete (see section 8 for additional fonts Snow Leopard installs). As in 10.5, the Multiple Master fonts are visible. The minimum font list for OS X, 10.6 is as follows:+
AppleGothic.ttf
Geneva.dfont
HelveLTMM
+Helvetica LT MM+
Helvetica.dfont
HelveticaNeue.ttc
Keyboard.ttf
LastResort.ttf
LucidaGrande.ttc
+Menlo.ttc (the new default font for Terminal)+
Monaco.dfont
+Times LT MM+
TimesLTMM
Times.dfont
Symbol.dfont

  • Font Book: Managing Fonts, Duplicates, Warnings etc... Need Help!

    How this all started...
I have a lot of fonts. I use them for design purposes, and recently added a bunch of new ones.
As a result, I had a problem with an Adobe program and the font displayed in the workspace.
I figured out which one caused it and deleted it. (I've never used it before, and it wasn't a common font, so I didn't really care).
    Problem with that solved.
So I figured that I ought to go through Font Book and check everything else and started Validation (under User).
I had several Errors, Duplicates and Warnings.
I (maybe naively) allowed Font Book to "Resolve Duplicates".
QUESTION 1 (a) (b):  Could letting Font Book resolve duplicates create any problems? and how does it decide what to trash?
I also let Font Book move all the Error fonts to my empty Trash Folder.
    - I then moved all those to an empty folder on my desktop.
I then moved all the Warning Fonts to another empty folder on my desktop.
So now, in User fonts, there are currently no problem messages.
This is where it gets a little trickier...
In "All Fonts" or "Computer" there are no caution symbols adjacent to any fonts, but if I run Validation, I get a lot of duplicate fonts.
    For example... Arial exists in:
    Library/fonts
    User/Library/fonts
    Library/Fonts/Microsoft
QUESTION 2: Do I need to address these? and if so, will that have an effect on any programs that use those fonts?
    * I did some research on this, and found an article at Mac World, discussing this, but I don't feel any better/wiser after reading it or the comments...
"Problem" since resolving duplicates and/or moving warning and error fonts (from User):
Since I resolved duplicates, and moved the error and warning fonts, I've noticed some "minor" changes in appearance with websites.
Such as in Hotmail, and a website that I'm a member; the font displayed is now just slightly different.
Albeit, the difference is very subtle, (but as a designer, I noticed this right away) and my concern is how this may affect any design work I do, if somehow the change I'm seeing is more of an error.
    * I have to make an assumption that its a font used in scripts (like Arial, Helvetica, etc, etc) that use my fonts for display.
QUESTION 3: So the big question is, how the heck do I address that now???
    About the Warning Fonts:
For the most part, the fonts that came up as "minor warnings", showed the message 'kern' table structure and contents.
    - I know that "kern" is suppose to be the spacing between characters.
QUESTION 4: So, why does Font Book care and warn about the "table structure and contents" of font spacing between characters, for any font???
QUESTION 4b: If that's NOT what that means, then I'd appreciate a plain English definition (perferably a source from Apple directly).
    Caches:
I'm seeing changes on the fly with fonts (and the display on websites), if I try and move fonts that had warnings like Arial styles or Helvetica styles back to my User Directory, so I'm guessing that Font Caching isn't affected by this.
If anyone is going to suggest that I deal with the font cache (since I've read several questions on this topic already), I'd appreciate some explanation about WHY I would need to address font caches and HOW they might be affected in respect to your suggestion and the problems I'm having.
    Additional Information:
    I use a MacBook, Mac OS X 10.6
~ If there's some other information that you may need from me, then please ask away... I need to figure this out, and Font Book is driving me crazy!!!

Yes hindsight is 20/20. I realize now that I should not have allowed FB to do what it asked. (But that's a moot point now).
Having a large number of fonts is something I've always had for design purposes. I never had issues with fonts on a PC, and didn't expect these sorts of problems on a Mac. And how is someone suppose to know NOT to trust a pre-installed program that's suppose to MANAGE your fonts???
I don't touch the system fonts. I am well aware that they can't be deleted, nor do I add any fonts to that directory.
I agree... I need to narrow down the issue. That was the whole point of posting this!
I do keep backups of my system and files. I have considered just replacing the font folders with what I had before, but it just brings me back to where I had all the warnings, errors and duplicates... And I'm not entirely sure if and how that could affect the font caches, and if I would need to then address those. I've been researching this quite a bit, but so far, all I've found is complaints or questions from people with similar problems. For whatever reason, very few people seem to want to offer help with this kind of problem (but I thank you for at least trying)...
With Dreamweaver, its not quite that simple. If it was, then I wouldn't need the help. Even if we disregard the issue I have with Dreamweaver, the problem also exists on some websites, webmail, etc. Websites (and Dreamweaver) use standard font families and display their fonts from YOUR installed fonts. The font problems I'm have online are not missing fonts, they are just not the same font in size or appearance that they were before (and no, my webmail, and these websites didn't change. I had someone give me some screenshots to confirm). But I can't figure out exactly where the problem is, because it appears that I DO have the standard fonts. It could be that FB removed a version that was better than what was left behind, or it could be something else.... I have no idea anymore. I'm just getting more frustrated.

  • Font book problems 10.9

    Hi guys,
Can anyone help with this issue of Font Book not loading fonts?
They've all gone hideaway since upgrading, and as a graphic designer it's a nightmare as I only have a handful to choose from.
    I'm on 10.9.2
I use the Adobe CC apps.
    Help or a link please
    Thank you!

  • Is there a limit to number of fonts Font Book will manage?

i'm using an old font manager that's causing issues. would love to just use apple's font book. however, i have hundreds (if not thousands) of fonts. is there a limit to what font book will handle?

i'll give that a look. however, it would be nice to just use Font Book. It handles auto activation pretty smoothly and it's very lightweight. i'm all about avoiding anything extra if it's at all possible

  • Is Font Book a font management software?

Is the built-in facility in Leopard OS "Font Book" a replacement for third party font management software (e.g. Suitcase)? Or is it still advisable to manage fonts using a third party software on a mac?

Leopard's Font Book provides simple font management software. It's definitely improved from the Tiger version. It would probably meet the needs of someone who had a relatively small font collection without the need for frequently opening and closing fonts.
For larger collections, or if you open and close fonts frequently, I'd recommend a more full-features application.
A good and inexpensive eBook from TidBITS on Fonts in Leopard gives you a lot of info about how it works:

  • Fonts...font manager....font book

    Hi,
Okay....I know that quite a bit has been written on this subject in these forums, but finding the exact problem I have, has been quite difficult. Here's the scoop-------
    1) Situation: I want to install Font Agent Pro. In fact I bought it and it is already done deal. To me this is a very cool app.
    2) Problem: I need/want to disable Font Book.
    3) Why it seems to be a problem: When I follow the steps to disable font book......well frankly it just doesn't work. The darn thing is STILL there working!
    4) Other things I have tried: I trashed font book (as recommended in these forums). Unfortunately this caused a beachball from Hades to spin eternally near the Spotlight menu bar area.
    5) What to do: I just want to disable font book w/o any problems. Any ideas????????
Just some suggestions would be really welcome. Thanks
    jabberwock

    Hi jabberwock,
The only way to disable Font Book is to delete it, which you did. While the issue with Spotlight certainly seems to be related, since it started right after you trashed Font Book, that just shouldn't happen.
When you say trashing Font Book caused the spinning beach of death, did you then put Font Book back on your system? If not, it could be that OS X is trying to enable/disable the fonts that were being controlled by Font Book's database. But can't because the main application is missing.
Follow the steps in Undoing Font Book. This will remove/reset Font Book's database. Doing this will also clear the system's font cache files.

  • Font Book in 10.7 is retarded. I need recommendations for a good font manager for OSX

On our 10.5.8 G5, I'm using Extensis Suitcase.
Our new Mac Pro is running 10.7 and I need to install fonts, but Font Book seems to cry about just about every font I want to install. So, where are the best font managers for OSX as of right now? Is Extensis still the best? Thoughts? Thanks,
    Chris

I know what your're talking about. I used to do phone support for an ISP.
Anyway, this last one that has me up in arms says this:
"1 serious error was found. Do not use this font."
This is in the Font Validation window when I try to install into Font Book. It shows the font name "Serpentine-Bold-Bold.ttf" in the window with an expand triangle to the left. To the far right is a red circle with a white X in it. Ahh screw it, here's a screenshot....
This font works perfectly fine on our G5 running 10.5.8

  • Does Font Book or other font management come with OS 10.9?

I have been using Suitcase Fusion and it takes forever to activate fonts, it is old and I'm reluctant to purchase the newer version especially if I'm supposed to get Font Book free with 10.9.
Can I have thought on recommendations?

You should have it on one of the discs that came with your computer. I don't know if it's the same disc as the Mac OS X itself, or if it is on another disc.
You may (if you wish) also need to download a program called Pacifist, from here

  • The fontd process crashes every time I launch Font Book

Crash report is below.  Looks like it's the com.apple.xtype.FontRegistry thread that's crashing.  I found a similar problem talked about for 10.5 that suggested installing the latest COMBO update.  How do you guys suggest I try to fix this with Lion?  Does this require that I reinstall my OS?
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated...

The FontRegistry database is used by Font Book. It's probably corrupt. fontd's main purpose is to run when fonts are being activated, or deactivated. It appears to be crashing due to being unable to access the database.
    To clear Font Book's database:
    1) Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally. This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files for the user account you logged into in Safe Mode. In Leopard or earlier, any font sets you have created will be gone. Also, all fonts in the three main Fonts folders (System, Library, your user account) will now be active, regardless of their state beforehand.
    2) Clear all font cache files from the system and restart.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command (or copy/paste it from here):
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and all user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.
The next time you launch Font Book, it will create a new database.

  • How to add a new font to font Book

I need to import a new font into font book for use. The font I have downloaded appears as a blank file (I don't know if I am explaining this correcly). When I try to locate this file thorugh the finder in appears greyed out and I can't select it. I have right clicked on it and specified that it be opened with font book; however, I cannot ever view it within font book. Perhaps it is not a valid file foramt for mac. Here's is a screenshot as the file appears on my desktop:
    http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b250/cshenderson/Picture1.png
Please help me get this resolved. How can I be able to use this font?

mahongue, sorry to interrupt here ...
Last September you posted a problem you were having with your connection speed. I'm having a similar issue, and wondered if/how you managed to fix the problem.
(Sorry to hijack this discussion, but I couldn't find your email address in your profile.)

  • I need a font book factory reset & a clean slate

My font book is is a mess!  I have duplicate fonts in about 4 different directories (my fault) and want a fresh start.  I did an "export" of my fonts but I am unsure how to do a factory reset.  I've read the Font Management in OS X doc but am unclear if clearing the cache will bring me back to just the basic system fonts or only clears the history.
Do I need to go in and delete ("file ----> remove font") the fonts in font book one by one and THEN clear the cache before reinstalling the ones I want in the ONE directory folder where I want them to live?  (lesson learned).  I have 1200 (not including the duplicates) fonts that I need to sift through and am looking for the fastest way to do this without losing the key system fonts for Mac, Office 2011 and Adobe CS5 Creative Suite.
Is that amount of installed fonts still manageable with font book or should I be looking at a different font management solultion?  I can't answer that for myself until I make it manageable with only ONE copy of each font
Thanks in advance for your help!  I promise that I've read through this site and have been googling all day but haven't been sure about resetting the it all back to square one
    Tara

There isn't an easy, singular answer to your question, though it would be fairly straightforward if it weren't for Office. I am curious how you arrived at 4 directories of fonts. There are only three Fonts folders OS X looks at. The ones in the System folder, the main Library folder, and the one in the active user account. Since you shouldn't even be looking in the System folder (if you don't know what you're doing), the only two places you should have any fonts you've added would be the main Library and your account.
Anyway, start by launching Font Book. Delete any Font sets or Library sets you have created. Close Font Book. Create a new folder on the desktop. Call it "mine". Anything you want really, just so it refers to the fonts in your user account. Go to the Fonts folder in your user account and move all fonts out of that folder to the new one on the desktop. Create another new folder on the desktop named "lib". Open the /Library/Fonts/ folder and move all fonts into the second new folder. Both the /Library/Fonts/ folder, and the Fonts folder in your user account should be empty.
Follow the instructions at the bottom of Font Management in OS X to restore all fonts from the Snow Leopard DVD. You will be using Pacifist to restore both the System and Library fonts. When you're done, your fonts will be back to the way the were when you first installed OS X.
From the desktop folder you named "lib". Move Hoefler Text.ttc and STHeiti Medium.ttc to the /Library/Fonts/ folder. Replace the versions you just restored with these newer versions. They were updated in 10.6.5.
Office 2011 installs many newer versions of fonts OS X comes with. Move these fonts from the 'lib" folder into the /Library/Fonts/ folder so you again replace the ones you just restored.

Here's where it gets a bit trickier. Office 2011 also installs a number of old fonts which conflict with the newer .ttf OpenType fonts. Delete these from the "lib" folder on your desktop. Note that they do not have a file extension.

Without being able to see what you have left in the "lib" folder, I can't easily say what you can move back into the /Library/Fonts/ folder. So I'll list everything else Office 2011 installs that you can move back in. Office uses many of these for its supplied templates. Cambria is the default font family for Word.

Anything you have left in the "lib" folder on your desktop will either be duplicates, or fonts installed by other third party apps. That will essentially be true of any fonts you moved out of your user account. I can't tell you which, if any of these, would need to be moved back in. For now, combine the two into a single folder and store them away anywhere not in any of the three Fonts on the hard drive. There will be a bunch of them as CS5 installs a slew of fonts. None of which it needs to operate.
That's as far as I can help with the fonts themselves.
Now open Disk Utility and run a Repair Permissions on your startup drive. Moving the fonts around will cause them to have permissions OS X doesn't like. Mainly just because you moved them back into the /Library/Fonts/ folder and it will want to change the permissions to OS X as the owner simply because of where they are.
    Last few things to do.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until you see a progress bar towards the bottom of the screen. You can let go of the Shift key at that point.
OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally. This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files of the user account you logged into in Safe Mode.
Next to take care of the System's font cache files.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
Terminal will then ask for your admin password. As you type, it will not show anything, so be sure to enter it correctly.
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and the current user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.
Last step when back at the desktop. Launch Font Book so it can create a new database based on the fonts currently in the drive's three Fonts folders.
There should be no duplicates. Everything OS X and Office installs will be available.

  • I am having trouble getting access to fonts on hard drive. In particular Helvetica Neue Black.  It seems that since HelveNeu.dfont is a system font Font Book  does not give me the option to activate HelveticaNeuBlack.

We recently started using Font Book instead of Suitcase Fusion for our font management program.  We are unable to activate our postscript type 1 font (Helvetica Neue Black)  It seems since hel neu is a system dfont that Font Book thinks we already have it activated but HelvNeueBlack is not part of dfont.  So even though I have it in my fonts folder the font is grayed out and am unable to activate.  I might add that HelveBlack is also a problem.  I've read the article by Kurt Lang on Font Management.  I followed his directions on how to remove dfonts from system but caused more problems than it solved.  I would appreciate a certified way to handle these particular fonts.  Do I need to purchase the Open Type fonts to solve problem.

What I did to fix was remove Helv Fractions that cleared up the problem.
It's been quite a while since I've seen that one come up. When you mentioned that some of the type looked like jumbled fractions, that should have jogged my memory. Yes, Helvetica Fractions is long known to be a bad font. Delete it from the hard drive and never reinstall it.
The HelvNeuBlack and HelvBlack fonts you sent are indeed creating conflicts. Here are screen shots of their internal names. HelvBlack first, and HelvNeuBlack second.
In Helvetica Black, the menu name is just Helvetica, which leaves nowhere for the regular Helvetica font to display in your font lists. It also then creates a cross reference between the two fonts. It is also reporting two other different names to the OS for the same font. Helvetica Black, and Helvetica-Black. You can technically get away with doing that, but it's bad practice.
Helvetica Neue Black is the same type of bad naming. The menu name is just Helvetica Neue, which leaves nowhere for the real Helvetica Neue to go in your menu lists. Then they rather oddly threw in Helvetica 95 Black for the full name, as opposed to HelveticaNeue-Black for the other two spots.
Just some really sloppy work here by someone for what I would guess were Type 1 PostScript fonts converted to Mac legacy TrueType. If you don't have the software to fix the names, the only good suggestion is to throw these fonts out and purchase new ones from a vendor who builds fonts correctly. And while they're kind of pricey, that means either Adobe or Linotype.

  • Font Book won't remove font files

I've been doing some testing with Font Book in hopes to replace Suitcase for font management. I've been testing on OS X 10.4.5 with Font Book 2.0.2.
I have FB prefs setup with User as the default install location. Getting fonts installed works fine. To simplify for testing I'm just using one source folder with one family of fonts in it. So I drag the source folder into the FB window where I have created a collection called Temp.
The font files are copied into ~/Library/Fonts, just as they should be, and are now available to the system. When I select the font family in FB and choose Remove Font, it disappears from FB, however the font files remain in ~/Library/Fonts.
According to all documentation I've read, that is not the expected behavior. When Remove Fonts is used within FB, the font files should be moved to the trash.
In addition, since the font files are being left in ~/Library/Fonts, if I try to add the same source folder back into FB, nothing happens, they just simply do not load. If I manually remove the lingering fonts from ~/Library/Fonts I am then able to add the source folder again.
So it appears that FB is not functioning as advertised. I've confirmed this on two separate machines running 10.4.5 and also with one running 10.3.9.
Any ideas what's up or am I missing something here?

"When I select the font family in FB and choose Remove Font, it disappears from FB, however the font files remain in ~/Library/Fonts.
Where are you selecting the font, from within the "All Fonts" collection, or within the "Temp" collection? If you've selected it from within your Temp collection, "Remove" only removes the font from the collection, not from your installed fonts. To remove the fonts from your installed fonts, you need to select them from within the All Fonts collection.
I think what you might want to do rather than create a collection is to create an actual "Temporary" font library. In Font Book, select the All Fonts collection so that the focus is in the leftmost column and choose "New Library" from the action menu. Name it "Temporary" (or whatever else you'd like) and then hit enter. Notice it's listed above the dividing line which separates libraries on the top with collections on the bottom. Now, drag your folder of fonts from the Finder onto the "Temporary" library icon in Font Book. NOTE: A reference to the fonts will be added to Font Book; the fonts themselves are not copied but remain where they are in the Finder and are activated or deactivated from there. Now, whether you select the fonts from within the All Fonts library or the Temporary library, the "Remove" command will remove the fonts from Font Book. (Since the fonts remained in their original location, when they're removed from Font Book they're not moved to the Trash; rather, the reference to them is simply removed from Font Book).
    Hope this helps....

  • Font Book disables fonts every time I restart my computer

First, some info on my computer:
    - OS X 10.9.3
    - Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 version 7.5
    - Office 2011 14.4.3
    - Suitcase Fusion 5 16.2.0
As a graphic designer, I've accumulated thousands of fonts. In an attempt to clean this up, I recently purchased Suitcase Fusion 5. I transferred the fonts by going into Font Book and selecting "Restore Standard Fonts." I then took the Macintosh HD; Library; "Fonts (Removed)" folder and added those to Suitcase Fusion 5.
Then I went back, and added about five of the removed fonts back into Macintosh HD; Library; Fonts — just because they are fonts I use frequently — as well as the Microsoft folder of fonts.
Now, for some reason, every time I start my computer (I shut down every night before leaving my office) about half of the Microsoft fonts are disabled by font book. The next day I enable them and everything works well and they all show up in both my Adobe and Office programs, but I'd really rather not play that game every morning. Again, almost all of the fonts being disabled are in the Macintosh HD; Library; Fonts; Microsoft folder, but only until the Ms or so, after which point they all show up as enabled and work just fine. And then there are a couple of outliers I've marked with an asterisk, that are just in the typical Macintosh HD; Library; Fonts folder that are also being disabled, the most confusing one being ThirstyRoughTextures.ttf, because the rest of the Thirsty Rough family is working just fine. (This single Thirsty Rough file is the only of the five-or-so fonts that I added back into my library after restoring it to standard fonts that is acting up. The others show up in all programs just fine.)
Anyhow, does anyone know why this might be happening, or how to resolve the issue? Any input would be great, thanks!

I'm fed up with Font Book and ready to remove it.
Just to keep it easily handy, put the Font Book app on an external drive. All other supporting system files for it will still be on the drive, so using it again rather than a third party font manager is as simple as copying FB back into the Applications folder.
It is essential after deleting Font Book to follow the steps in my article to remove the abandoned Font Book database. Even with the main Font Book app removed from the drive, if the database exists, OS X will keep trying to read and use it, and it will interfere with all other font managers.
which seemingly only activates fonts once I open up that extension
Those are extension panels Suitcase adds to apps they've written them for so you don't have to go to the main interface in order to turn fonts on or off. It's a convenience thing to speed up access to your font sets.
what will happen to programs like Microsoft Office that aren't compatible with Fusion?
If you use a panel in the Adobe apps to turn any fonts on or off, all apps system wide will see the changes in available fonts since that's how it works with any manager. Or, you can launch the main Suitcase interface to do the same thing.
MS Office has an annoying quirk I haven't seen with any other app. It will not pay attention to any fonts you've activated or deactivated after Word has been launched. That's not a Suitcase issue, it's any font manager. Office simply does not keep tabs on available fonts while in use. To see fonts you've activated after Word is already running, you have to quit Word and relaunch it. Same with turning fonts off. Doesn't matter that they're not available any more. If they were when you launched Word, they'll continue to show in the list. Attempting to use one of course doesn't work. It types in Arial, or something, but not what you chose since it can't.
Is FontBook irrelevant and Office/any other program still just utilizes the actual HD/Library/Fonts folder without it?
When font management is working as it supposed to, all apps (save Office) will change the list of fonts you can use as you turn them on or off. It used to be, way back in Tiger, 10.4 (before 10.4.3) and earlier that any fonts in the System or main Library folder were available all the time with no way to control them, other than physically deleting fonts from those folders. This is still true of the System's Fonts folder.

  • Font Book 2.0.3

I am trying to find out if my Font Book has Crashed. My Illustrator all of a sudden would stop responding, uninstalled it and reinstalled. But I get the following error when I tried to create a PDF:
The font Futura could not be imbedded in the PDF document because of licensing restrictions. Stroked key will not be visible. It says this about all of the fonts in my document. And they are messed up on the screen also.
In word, it takes forever to load, it seems to stall for awhile when it gets the Font info. And when I look in the drop down menu for the fonts, they are all jumbled on top of each other, and when I scroll down to the bottom, it has weird distortion stuff, nothing that even looks like a font.
A few months back I downloaded Suitcase by Extensis, but after it installed, I had nothing in my drop down menus for my windows, The drop down menu was empty, I did not even have options for shutting down the computer. It was that way in all my program windows. So I used App Zapper to remove it, but there were plug ins left behind in Illustrator & Indesign. So I manually removed them, and the apps seemed to work fine till 3 weeks ago, when I got the Black Screen on my computer. I wasn't even doing anything, I walked away came back and it was there. Took 2 reboots to get it up, but when I went into any app that has font options it would either not load due to not responding, or it would take forever for it to load.
Also, get some kind of weird language on all the Adobe stuff I have installed on here, the screen says it is displaying in English, but it is definitely not English.

Thanx for the reply, although for future reference I prefer warm fuzzy emails, that do not make me want to cry...
Sorry, didn't intend to bring you to tears. It is better to post here though since you may get help from quite a few knowledgeable people.
I am a PC person, so this is my first full time MAC position, which I am not finding rewarding.
This is unusual. Macs are normally very stable. It's hard to tell from here of course what may have led to so much trouble. I still think your first best bet is an Archive and Install. Find the gray OS X installation disk that came with your Mac. If the copy of Tiger you have installed is a retail disk (black with a silver X on it), use that.
For safety's sake, you should first create a backup of your hard drive to an external, or other internal drive if you have one.
Insert the OS X installation disk in your drive. A window will appear for it when it mounts. Double click the icon to install OS X. The Mac will reboot to the CD/DVD for you. When it's ready, you'll first get the option of which language to use. Continue to the next screen. I can't remember how quickly the option you need comes up, but I think it's after which hard drive you choose to install OS X to. Anyway, look for a button that brings up a choice as to how OS X is installed. You'll find a choice for Archive and Install. Make sure to also select the option to preserve your settings and preferences. Continue with the installation.
When it's done, you'll have fresh install os OS X on the hard drive. Apply all available updates. You'll also find a folder marked Previous System. That's everything the Archive and Install replaced. You can trash that. That will take care of any problems with the OS itself.
I had Illustrator loaded previously, using all of the same fonts, embedding all fonts, including Futura, and this is the first time I ever saw this message. I do not have this message is InDesign, instead I get "You might not be able to print w/.... or stroke its characters because the fonts outline file is missing". And then when I go to PDF it says it could not embed the fonts due to the missing "Outline File". What the heck is an "Outline File"???? And how do I get one?
Ah, so the Illustrator message is probably incorrect. On the PC, I'm sure you're aware that a Type 1 PostScript font is made up of two files for each type face. One with a .pfm extension, and the other with .pfb. Mac Type 1 PostScript fonts are made up of two parts. One file is a suitcase containing all of the low res bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts. As an example, here's Adobe Garamond.
    Adobe Garamond
    AGarBol
    AGarBolIta
    AGarIta
    AGarReg
    AGarSem
    AGarSemIta
The first file which I highlighted in green is the font suitcase of bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts.
    1) The files for a Type 1 PostScript font must have both the screen and printer fonts for a given set in order to work. They also must be in the same folder.
    2) The suitcase of bitmap fonts will work alone, but output will be terrible since the system will print the fonts using the 72 dpi screen fonts in the suitcase if the outline portions are missing.
    3) Having only the outline fonts will not work. You can see the fonts, but they will not load. That's not a problem with Font Book, Suitcase or other font manager. None of them, nor the system itself will load outline fonts from a Type 1 PostScript font without the matching suitcase of screen fonts present.
So in your case, you have the suitcase of bitmap screen fonts, but not the vector outline font for the typeface you're using. Hence the message, "...because the fonts outline file is missing". Since so many of the fonts you're trying to use won't embed, you probably only have the screen fonts for all of them.
