$$ for filming and editing

A partner and I participated in a 5-day challenge documentary: lots of coffee and late nights' editing a 7 minute project. The subject loved it and hired us to make a 13 minute version using the footage plus another couple interviews, images, and particulars that she wanted us to follow. Ok. My partner and I are grateful toward her eagerness to be the subject, provide unusual images and music. And we're proud of both projects. While we didn't charge (of course) for the first version, do we charge for some of the first? We proposed one-third of the first. What do'ya think? We spent 30 hours filming and editing on the first; 20 hours additional for the second. My experience? 15 years prophotographer and a handful of 45 minute films on artists. Equip? Pana DVX100B with no "spectical" transitional editing. Intent? Her continued "entry" into the art world. Please, I am not asking for rate info, only percentage, but lay it on me if you wish. I know this forum is for "why can't I open the canvas window," etcetera, so thanks for the lattitude of asking this question.

If you're trying to justify the amount fo charge her, you can break it down into a few logical points:
The initial piece was done for your own benefit, but the new additions go beyond the scope of that piece.
The time, money and effort you put into it were an investment in your own business. Having this new piece would benefit her commercially, and it doesn't seem unreasonable to ask her to make a similar sort of investment.
The original piece benefitted both you and her. This new piece would have no value or benefit to you, so it seems perfectly reasonable to ask for money for footage that you shot and edited. Remember, she will be using your work for commercial purposes.
You already have the project 75% complete. And judging from what you say, she won't find a better deal in town for a similar project.
I'll admit if it was agreed upon that the first piece was mutually beneficial, and no money was to change hands, it would be a bit prickly to charge her. But asking for changes and new content is the beginning of a business transaction in my mind.

    There all so AWESOME!

Then you are best to get a Macbook Pro. Your real aim should be the graphics card.
You won't be doing really good gaming on a discrete graphics card sharing RAM.
Depending of coarse what games you play.
eg. card games / COD games.

  • Feature request: better tools for commenting and editing text

We currently use a comments-enabled Acrobat workflow with InDesign to track changes to our large catalog project. Was hoping to move our team over to CS Live, but currently the commenting tools are sub-par, and not accurate enough for extensive text editing. My request would be to imitate the text editing functionality of Acrobat:
    In CS Live online:
    - allow users to be able to copy selected text. (This is useful when a reviewer wants to be able to modify a sentence or paragraph. It's a headache now to have to retype the sentence prior to making modifications)
    - Ability to highlight text and hit "delete" to mark text as deleted, or highlight and type over to indicate replaced text
    - Ability to click to insert text, and have the comment appear with the inserted text designation (little blue carat like in Acrobat)
    - ability to highlight a section of text
    In InDesign:
    - ability to copy the text in a comment and NOT copy all the other extraneous meta data. (Currently, if you click "copy text", it will copy the comment along with all the details about the comment. For example, "- Amy Stewart [10.06.11 at 12:56 PM]"
    - ability to see in InDesign the EXACT part of the text that needs to be modified. Right now, the red box outlines the general area. The CS Review panel shows a tiny thumbnail with black highlight over the area of text that needs to be changed, but unfortunately, there's no way to zoom in on it, so you're stuck having to toggle between InDesign and the online review, where it's possible to zoom. (This diminishes the utility of the CS Review panel.)
If you were able to incoroprate all the commenting functionality of Acrobat, I think you'll have a winner. But right now, we're going to have to stick with Acrobat as it's the only way to easily modify text.

Sorry if I might be stating the obvious (but at least I was such a *dummy* once that I needed this explicitely):
In order to move the sequence of images per drag&drop in grid view you need to
Put the sort order in the bottom toolbar to "user order" (toggle visibility with letter T if not displayed)
Grab an image from within its thumbnail, not from its border-cell.
When you move around you see a vertical black thick line wandering in between images where you would be able to drop it
Put the images first into a collection in case they should be spread across multiple folders.
This is the reason why most often from a filter result you cannot re-arrange.
Still sometimes it does not work as I want, but can *be persuaded*, i.e. I repeat the same trial after first moving to another collection, then return back. I can't nail it down sufficiently to file a bug.
For an automated sorting according to filename (chosse that setting finally in toolbar) you could rename the photos in place, without exporting & re-importing. Just select them and hit <F2> to bring up the renaming dialog like possible during import.
+1 vote from me, as I am neither satisfied with the responsiveness of moving folders within LR e.g. from laptop hard disk to NAS.
Apart from that I try not to build much on my folder structure, just break them into manageable quantities and have a quick "diary-overview" by using naming convention "YYYY-MM-DD description of event" (pictures of up to 4 cameras go inside, unique filenames for Canons achieved by renaming during import). For all the rest I prefer to build (smart) collections.

  • Best drives for sharing and editing Lightroom library remotely or onsite?

Small company needs to move Lightroom folders from one iMac to a new drive, so more than 1 of us can import and edit in Lightroom 5.6. I need to move all my Indesign documents and Lightroom folders and photos off my iMac and onto something accessible to multiple iMacs and Windows PCs. Some Windows workstations will just be viewing and printing the pdf versions of the Indesign forms. And they will be accessing Word docs and Excel files in these shared folders. But my daughter and I need to open and edit all Indesign documents and Lightroom photos from home or from office. I think we would prefer to work on these files without having to first download them to our local hard drives.
4 Windows PCs and 2 iMacs in our office are on a LAN so we can access our business application software. So some of our tech support trusted advisors are suggesting Samba folders on our office server. Others say a NAS drive is a good solution or maybe cloud based storage. All these people know well the basics of sharing files on a mixed network--but none of them work in Lightroom or Indesign.
96 GB is total amount of all files, photos, and folders. Some of these are duplicate folders I'll delete and consolidate as I move them to new location. The dng photos and Photoshop files we work with are all under 5 MB. If our homes use regular Time Warner Cable and AT&T Uverse internet access, is it reasonable to expect we can work from home with same speed as when we are in the office? And does either a Samba folder on our RedHat linux box or/vs a NAS drive or/vs some cloud based storage offer any better chance of speed and ease of working from home?
Thank you for reading all of this. Any advice would be appreciated.

You don't need a Mac Mini server to do that. Any cheap system could do that. I'd check Freecycle or even ebay and criagslist. Look for some old Pentium 2/3/4 system someone is looking to offload. Slap in a high capacity drive or two, load a copy of Linux on there, set up SAMBA for SMB file sharing, or even a simple FTP server, and you're good to go. You can probably just run it without a monitor, off to the side somewhere, and just use SSH or VNC to monitor it.
The only problem with that, is that the electricity demands will get a bit high compared to some dedicated NAS hardware. NAS devices will have a higher up front cost, but they'll use considerably less electricity, so be cheaper in the long run.
Of course if you expect to be using the system as a HTPC as well, then I might be more able to give the nod to the Mini Server. Though the non-Server mini would work just as well, with the exception of only having the one HDD.

  • Can't retrieve iMovie project saved to DVD for storage and editing.

When I save my iMovie project to DVD for storage and possible future editing, I cannot retrieve it from the DVD. I get the message, "The project could not be opened, bacuase the disk is full, the folder is locked, or the folder permissions are incorrect..." How do I remedy that?

    the folder is locked
iMovie projects won't work with locked volumes (such as a DVD!). So you must first copy the project to the HD.

    Hi experts,
I created dynamic ALV . in this i want coloring and editing of cells.
this can be done by strucutture lvc_t_scol, lvc_t_styl.
My problem is how to create structure in field catalogue of Dynamic ALV.
    Thanks

    Hello
I am not sure if you have missed the following part of the coding:
" Add table type (LVC_T_STYL) as field to structure ==> complex structure
      CLEAR: gs_comp.
      gs_comp-type ?= cl_abap_typedescr=>describe_by_data( celltab ).
      gs_comp-name  = 'CELLTAB'.
      APPEND gs_comp TO gt_components.
      go_sdescr  = cl_abap_structdescr=>create( gt_components ).
      go_tdescr  = cl_abap_tabledescr=>create( go_sdescr ).
CREATE DATA gdo_handle TYPE HANDLE go_tdescr.
      ASSIGN gdo_handle->* TO <gt_itab>.
    This is exactly your requirement.

  • Some help needed for improrting and editing

    Hi,
I need a litle help with two issues.
    1) I was trying to edit a photo but when i click the edit button, I can see the photo at the top of the screen in the film strip but not in the edit screen and I have also noticed for this particular picture I cannot view it in full zoom. All I can see is an " ! " mark.
    2) I deleted this picture and tried to import again but iphoto states that it cannot import because it already exists. I tried closed the program, deleting the cache.

    Derek
It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss
iPhoto is a database and like any database it needs you to manipulate the data via the app itself, and not via a back door. So, that's why it thinks the pic is still there - because the entry in the database is still there.
The correct way to remove a pic is to move it to the iPhoto trash and empty the iPhoto trash. This will remove the pic from the database and the HD.
Now your database base is bunged up you have two choices: one is to return things precisely the way they were the other is to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
Assuming you renamed a file to make it easier to find:
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser. Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.

  • What's the difference between editing film and editing video in FCP?

I see some shows on t.v. like Intervention, Cold Case Files,
and others, that I know are edited on FCP, but they look like film,
    not video.
Is there some special skill or different hardware/software necessary to edit one over the other?
    thanks

I'm guessing that you can't capture film into FCP unless
    it's transfered to video ... correct?<
Well, not exactly. You could capture film directly into FCP if you had the proper equipment. Not many people have that hardware, expensive and tedious. We pay someone to do it for us. Telecine can be delivered on tape or as digital files. One captures from tape, one ingests digital files.
It's also possible to make video look like film. But do not post that question, google it. There are hundreds of sites devoted to the discussion.

  • Monitor setup for film sound-edit

    Hi freaks,
My monitor setup is 3 Bm5a's and a Bm9 sub. The movie will be mixed LCR, not surround.
In the (Logic 8) prefs/audio/surround i've got it set to 5.1 with the L monitor on output 1, R on out-2 and C on out-8 of the digi 003 in my studio. Output 1-2 run throughthe Bm9. This way when not sound-editing the set functions normally for music.
The style is quite lowkey, intercut with documentary footage so i wont be needing the sub on a seperate channel as it wont be used.
The audio was recorded in M/S which makes things interesting (for me at least) translating this to the 3 channel format.
The M channel is currently set to surround with the front and rear surround channels turned off. If i need to pan it around i can turn on the front surrounds on a channel.
The S channel has a gain mono->stereo plugin with the right channel phase inverted. output set to surround.
Is there a rule for the relative loudness of the center speaker compared to the surrounds? To get them to match i have to drop the center by 20dB!
The mix will be done in a proper facility, but i want to have everything well sorted out. The Pyramix/Protools crowd aren't big Logic fans.

Output 1-2 are connected to the "main-outputs" on the 003 which are thus controlled by the volume knob. The center monitor on output 8 isn't. This is where i was getting the volume difference. I'm presuming they should be the same volume.

  • HVX200 vs. SDX900 -- for FILM LOOK edited in FCP

What are the latest thoughts on relative strengths & demerits of the two cameras, for shooting movies to edit in FCP, then output to tape & DVD, as well as projection and blowups? It seesm to be a hotly contested question, and the more opinions I can tally the more I learn. - THANKS!

Zebulun - I certainly agree with your point about the sensibility and skill of the operator being the main issue.. (I'm sure Rembrandt could paint very well with amateur brushes). At the same time, though, I want to research this as thoroughly as possible. One controversy is the SDX's ability to look filmic yet sharp when blown up. Some say true HD looks far better, while others debate that vigorously. One discussion on the Panasonic site got so rancorous the moderator closed down the thread! - Anyhow. Thanks for your input. I'm inclined toward the SD beause of workflow and bigger size of the camera.

  • Help! Need a good laptop for school and editing. Budget is around $800 (Canadian).

I'm looking for a laptop for around $800 Canadian, I'm starting a science and technology program in high school so I will need decent graphics performance for editing and 3D modelling. My budget is a bit flexible but only by around $100 for a significantly better product. I've had my eye on the Lenovo y40-80 but some people say it's great and other call it a dissapointment. I was thinking about either ASUS, Lenovo, or MSI.  Any suggestions would be helpful, Thanks.

I own an ASUS and a MSI laptop.  A little advice for you.... Visit the store and see if you can play a YouTube video.one laptop display appears dimmer and not so brightthe other laptop does a very poor job of rendering colors (especially with skin)Can't say this is a problem with today's newer machines.  But it was something that has troubled me.

  • 3 cameras filming and editing

    Hello,
I need to shoot interviews with 2 people for my website. My budget is limited, but it's important for me to make it look professional as I can.
My plan is like this: I'll use 3 cameras - one as main and the other 2 - c.u for each person. For audio recording I'll use 2 wireless lavalier microphones - which I'll connect to one of the cameras. I'll record it on SD card, and than edit the footage with premiere, using the multy camera editing.
From the research I did in the internet I've found that for our budget the best camcorder is: Canon VIXIA HF R200 - the only one in that price range that has audio input port.
Microphones - I'll use the Azden 330LT UHF On-Camera Dual Bodypack System.
For the editing I'll use laptop - Lenovo IdeaPad Y570 15.6".
This is my plan, consider my budget and other limitation.
I'll be happy to hear opinions about it, and if anyone has suggestions of other ways to do it.
    Thank you.

Your plan and equipment sound up to par to me.
Your screen real-estate may be a bit tight but remember; you only need windows open that you are using. You don't need every Premiere Pro window option open. You can always hook up an external monitor if need be.
Since you plan on shooting AVCHD, I would suggest you look into editing with intermediates as they may give you better performance during a multicam edit.
Take extra time to match your camera colors as best you can during the shoot so you don't have to apply any FX to your angles on the timeline. If you want a certain look you can then nest and add it to the final Multicam mixed (flattened to one track) timeline effecting all shots equally.

  • Settings for Capture and edit HDV

I Bought two Sony V1's yesterday and shot a wedding with them today. No problem capturing the footage but when I place it in the time line I need to render. ( Red line above footage) So i guess the settings are wrong.
In the Audio/Video tab, I have
    Sequence preset HDV - 1080i50
    Capture Present HDV
Device Control Preset Sony HDV Firewire
What else havent I done? (It was a 13 hour shoot so I'm a bit tired but just wanted to see how it looked. Maybe a good night sleep will help!)
MacPro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Two 3Ghz Duel Core Intel Xeon 4 Gig ram

You are going to get this sort of thing a lot. When you try to print to tape at the end it can happen again.
If you are getting problems you should reset your easy settings and copy and paste the edited material (not the sequence or you wil just nest the old sequence inside it) into a newly created easy set up sequence.
