Forcing new tabs to open to immediate right of current tab

Hi all,
Is there a way to have new tabs open to the immediate right of the current tab you're in, as opposed to the default which is to the right of the last open tab?
I know this is automatic when clicking on a link in the current tab, but would be great to be able to do it for new tabs.
Thanks!
Barb

hello,
you can always move the tabs around by dragging them around. As you said you can only open new tabs right next to the current tab when clicking on the links in the current tab.

It's normal for links to open in the same tab as you browse if you left-click. You can Ctrl+click or middle click to open a link in a new tab. Are either of those broken?
Some sites let you use a regular left click to open a link in a new tab (example: Google search settings), and some add-ons may change link behavior. Can you check whether one of your add-ons has been disabled?
    Tools > Add-ons > Extensions
Also, if you use the Ask toolbar, try disabling it and see whether that makes any difference.

  • Force new windows to open in tabs?

Is there a plug-in or AppleScript that will force links that are set to open in new windows to instead open in a new tab?

No - I mean for links that are that are desigend to open a new browswer window - can I have Safari treat the "new window" directive as "new tab" instead? (I love the fact that Mail and etc. opens a new tab, I just want links on the web to do the same.)

  • Force "new pages" to open in same tab?

Obviously, some pages want to open in a new window. I have it now so that if I click on a "new page" link using the apple key, it opens in a new tab.
However, is there a way to force that page destined for a new page/tab to open in the SAME TAB - possibly with a modifier key? Thanks!

    Hi,
I'm not aware to force this behaviour, but if it is a regular link you can drag the link onto the same tab heading you are currently looking at. Obviously this won't work for form submissions where there is no link to drag as such

  • Force new window to open in new tab

Now my safari open pages from the original pages to the new pages, I tried to set Safari to open pages in new tabs. I tried Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Tabs ▹ Open pages in tabs instead of windows: Automatically or Never or Always, but it still opened the pages on the original one.

Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
    If that doesn't help ...
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the trash.
Quit, relaunch Safari and test again.

  • Force new tab preference isn't stopping some links from opening windows?

I am using Firefox 4, the following happens even if all addons are disabled (Safe Mode). I have selected the option "Open new windows in a new tab instead" under Tabs in Firefox options. It seems the javascript call window.open is still able to bypass this preference.
As an example, the first link on this page still opens into a new window: http://www.javascript-coder.com/files/window-popup/javascript-window-open-example1.html
Is there a way I can get this into a tab? Is this intended? The context menu does not show an open in tab option. This preference seems to work for this instance in Firefox 3.6.15 (I get the content opened into a new tab) which I also have installed.
EDIT: Updated to release version above, without workaround, same issue as described.

The pressure to mark things as solved doesn't change the fact that it isn't solved yet.
    Case in point:
    javascript:getNewsCast();
always opens in a new window.

  • Terminal: How to force new tabs??

Is there a way to force Terminal "New Remote Connection..." to create a new tab on an open window instead of creating a new window?
I work all day with terminal sessions and ssh connections... it's really annoying... after 15 minutes i have windows all over the desktop... the option is to drag the new windows to another, merging them, and that's also annoying...
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards.

I found this thread after googling for the following
How do I open "new remote connection" as "new tab" in os x leopard terminal
Unfortunately, I didn't quite find what I was looking for here, so I decided to try and figure it out on my own.
Here's what I did, give it a try. I apologize if I leave out any (or the crucial) steps.
    1. Terminal
    2. Preferences
    3. Settings
    4. Highlight the Tab 'style' of your choice. I chose 'Pro' only because I like White on Black.
    5. Just below the list is the 'Gear' icon. (I apologize for not knowing the proper name.)
    6. From the 'Gear' menu, select Duplicate Settings.
    7. A new Tab 'Style' will appear with the name 'Pro 1', rename it. (I suggest the name of the host, i.e. ssh.example.com.)
    8. Window
    9. Change the name of the Title from Terminal to the name of the host, i.e. ssh.example.com.
    10. Shell
    11. Startup > Run command > Checkmark > ssh [email protected]
    12. Startup > Run command > Run inside shell > Remove Checkmark
Now, whenever I want to hit any of my typical ssh hosts, I just use the appropriate tab.
This method is probably only viable for a small number of hosts, rather than a medium to large number.

  • How can I get a new window to open in Front of the current window?

There seems to be a related setting for new Tabs, but not for new windows. I fail to see why many people would want to open a new window, but then not want to use it right away. It seems the default should be open the new one in front.

Hi MichaelDMiller60, if the problem does not occur with Flash 10.3, then most likely the issue is the Protected Mode feature found in Flash 11.3 and later.

  • How can I get new windows to open On Top Of the current window, not Behind the current window?

Regarding the Options checkbox to "When I open a link in a new page, switch to it..." I already have that box checked, but still windows are opening behind my current window.

Hello MichaelDMiller60, '''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

  • How do I make all new tabs open on the far right?

I do not want to use tab groups, or have a tab open to the immediate right of current tab. Whenever I open a new tab I want it to open to the right of all other tabs.

Type '''about:config''' in the Location Bar and hit Enter.
    ''Accept the warning message.''
At the top in the Search bar paste this pref.
'''browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent''' = then lower on this pref double-click to toggle to '''false'''

  • I am no longer able to open multiple tabs. Tabs get deleted whenever I click on open a new tab button, so I lose the page I was on.

I had to do a system restore due to issues with a system update causing my computer to freeze and slow down. Once that was done, my laptop worked brilliantly, but Firefox no longer allows me to open new tabs. I can only browse one tab at a time, and if I try to open a new tab my previous tab gets deleted and replaced by the blank tab. This isn't an issue for IE, just Firefox.

I notice you turned off the setting that diverts new windows to a new tab. Since the new window will open in front of your current tab, it may appear that the current tab was closed, when in fact it is behind the new window. This hard to explain in words.
Do you want to switch the setting?
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Tabs
Check the box for "Open new windows in a new tab instead"
    Does that help?

  • Open any new tab/link at the immediate right of a selected tab?

    Hello everyone,
I'm quite "new" to FF, considering that I'm in the process of making it my primary browser since the one I was using until now became increasingly obsolete and frustrating.
I've installed a good few numbers of add-ons already to configure it to my liking, but I don't seem to crack that one.
All is in my question's title really: I'd like to be able to open a new tab at the very right of any selected tab.
Is there any way to do that?
    Thanks!

See [[tabbed browsing]] newly opened tabs can open to the immediate right of the current one. For instance right click a link on this page and open as a new tab, by default that opens to the immediate right, rather than at the far right.
I remember that being introduced, (see [[new tabs do not appear to the right of the last tab]] ) and am trying to remember whether at that time new blank tabs also opened to the immediate right. Is that what you want a new blank tab?
There are many extensions that affect tab behaviour, maybe one of them helps look through https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/extensions/tabs/

  • When I have 4 or 5 tabs open, selecting one of them often forces that tab to open as a new window and close in the original window

FF 32.0.1. Moving between tabs that are already open, clicking on one which I have opened before forces it to close and open as a new window, which is a real pain. It seems to happen when I have 4 or 5 open tabs, rather than 2 or 3.
This has only been happening in the last week, after a clean Windows reinstall.
I've searched and found lots of people have problems with new windows opening when they just want a new tab, but this seems to be about opening fresh tabs rather than returning to one that's already open, so I can't find the same problem as I describe.

This can happen if you drag a tab slightly down in the browser window while clicking.
Firefox has a feature called tear-off tabs
You can detach a tab from the current window and open it in a new window by dragging a tab in the browser window.
You can also do this via the right-click context menu of a tab: Move to New Window
You can drag that tab back to the tab bar in the original window to undo that detaching.

  • How can I force a link to open in a new tab on a Mac!?

On Mac, CMD + Click only opens a link in a new tab if that link is located on that same subdomain and domain. If the link goes to another domain or subdomain it will just ignore the click!!!
For example, on www.cnn.com I can CMD+Click on a number of article and they will open in a new tab. However, if the article is to a money.cnn.com or to some other website my CMD+click will be ignored.
Also, would be nice to do the same in gmail. Actually, in gmail the link opens in another tab, but you are forced into that tab, so again the expected behavior of opening in another tab while remaining on the current page is being ignored.
Seems to be an ongoing issue for a few years a no one has provided a decent answer other than install a plug-in. Also, several 'about:config' options I've read about only talk about behavior when opening a new window, nothing dealing with the ignored clicks.

guig2, thanks for the response, but I don't believe this will help. Of the TABs options in preferences the only possibly relevant one is to force a link that would normally open in a new window to open as a tab instead.
As for the plugin the two 'secret options' it talks about, I have already tried, which are basically a twist on the preference options.
It also seems from the reviews of the plugin that it doesn't always work, or doesn't allow you to select which site open in a new tab, which is what I want.
Is there some way to force firefox to interpret CMD+Click as a right-click->"Open in new tab," basically the context menu always works and is the expected behavior for CMD+Click (which doesn't always do this, possible due to the page modifying the behavior).
