Forcing the monitor to shut off -- fixed!

Usually when I walk away from my computer, I shut the monitor off manually with the power button. However, the button is quite finicky, and I'd rather have an entry in my root window to shut off my monitor.
So I figured out that the xset program can do this. 'xset dpms force off'
But... all this does is make the screen go black. Once I move the mouse, the screen comes back to normal. 'force off' should shut the monitor down completely. I've also tried 'force sleep' and 'force standby'.
'xset q' reports that dpms is enabled. If i get the monitor status after I 'force off', it says the monitor is off, but it clearly is not.
I'm running the standard arch kernel26, with xorg, nptl, udev, hotplug. I'm not running xscreensaver, if that makes any difference.
Maybe I need to install a module? This worked at one point, and that's probably when I had my custom kernel with everything built right in. I just tried modprobing acpi, but it reported there was no such device. and it couldn't find an apm module.
I'm running modern hardware, so I don't think there's a need for 'acpi=force'.
Anyway, thanks in advance for your suggestions

heh well first of all, i have a brand new athlon 3000+ machine, running on an asus motherboard, and I've used power management on hardware older than yours.
According to dmesg, ACPI is enabled, meaning the BIOS supports this feature.
I've run xscreensaver with power management on here before, and it would shut the monitor of. As I said in my last post, this method doesn't work now.
I don't want to point fingers, but I think that perhaps there's a broken package preventing this from working... most likely kernel26 2.6.8.1. Perhaps if we can get some feedback from users for whom this IS working, we can figure out what the problem actually is.

In the process of shutting off, my iPhone 4 froze. The little scrolling circle just keeps displaying. I can't get it to connect ot iTunes or to my charger. So far, nothing I have done has changed anything.

Hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons until an  appears. This should take about 8 seconds, and it reboots the phone. If it doesn't something is seriously trashed in your iPhone's memory.
You can then try a forced restore. Restart your computer, launch iTunes, put the iPhone in the cradle and hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons for a long time (20 seconds). This puts the phone in Recovery mode, and it should prompt you to restore the phone.

  • Macbook Pro seems to be bricked by ML install. Upon restart it shows a progress bar which makes it to about 15%, and then the machine simply shuts off. Help?

Title pretty much says it all. Install seemed to be going fine, then upon restart it hit a gray screen with a progress bar for about 30 seconds. Once the progress bar makes it to about 15% the machine simply shut off. I tried turning the machine on again a few times, but each time I had the same issue. I then tried running the 10.8 recovery disk, but it just showed the gray spinning wheel for about 6 hours. Any ideas?

Something similar issue with me too. Intallation went fine. Then it started updating java once reboot it got stuck on grey screen. It wont boot at all. That spinning wheel keeps on going forever. :(

  • Why was the program automatally  shut off immediately  ?

I  bought I pad in HK .  When I used QQ and memory note,  when I wrote "我” , the program was shut off immediately , I has to visit the program  again.  Why ?

I cannot speak to this specific instance, but many times, when the pad shuts down unexpectedly, there is simply a memory problem.   Double tap the home button and see the apps in the recently used area.  Most of them are simply recently used, but some do continue to keep some memory reserved.
Double tap to see the task bar.  Touch and hold any of those icons until they jiggle, then shut them down by touching the minus sign.
Them reboot.  Press and hold the sleep and hold buttons until you see the apple logo.  Ignore the red slider.
Going through the task bar and closing off old apps is a good way to keep the machine running well.

  • My MBP was working fine, but then the display just shut off... What should I try?

I was using my MacBook Pro 2011 13', when the display suddenly shut off. I thought at first that the computer shut down, but after a hard reset, the computer is on (keys lighting up, fan noises, heartbeat light on) but the display is completely black. I no longer have apple coverage. Does anyone have a recommendation of things I could try before taking it in?

    Try resetting the SMC.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • When using a wired connection from pc to tv as monitor, should the pc be shut off before connecting the plug?

I bought a mini display/port adaptor and an hdmi cable to connect my laptop to my tv as a monitor.  I've used it a few times and it works fine, but my display changes in some ways, I don't have mhy desktop picture, just a blank screen.  Everything seems to work fine, but certain screen details or items aren't there..  Should I be shutting off the pc before I put the plug in or disconnect it?

    Correction.
I have a Airport Extreme Base Station. I am not sure if it makes a difference.

  • I have the iPhone4. It wont stay on unless it's plugged into the charger. When on the charger it doesn't get service or connect to wifi. Sometimes, even on the charager it shuts off. Note: It's always on 100% to 90%. How do I fix this?

As stated. I have the iPhone4, I've had it personally for a year now. It's a hand-me-down phone from my uncle who had for for at least two years. For an old phone it worked perfectly. The ocassional hang up on the caller when I try to lock it, but overall it worked perfectly.
Now, it started to glitch out a lot. From not letting me unlock my phone for the few minutes, to now shutting off on on regardless of where it's at. I started noticing that my phone would shut itself off, even at 40% when I'm at work. To fix it I would have to find a charger, plug it in for a few moments and it would turn back on. I would be cautious not to put it upsidedown otherwise it'd shut off again.
As of last night, ((9/18/13 )) My phone turned off. I've already gone through the charade numerous times. So I put it on my charger but this time when my phone turned on I didn' have service and it didnt get wifi. Even the red buttons/notifications on my phone were there but didn't read any numbers. Obvioulsy I couldn't make calls or even send a text messages. Sometimes when it turns on I can't even use my apps. Even when fully charged, the moment the chargers is slightly out my phone shuts off as if it died
Now, my phone even on the charger shuts on and off. I'm unable to use apps. I get no service or wifi.
Is this fixable? Or has my phone had it's last Hoorah?

it sure sounds like the battery is defect
