  • Settings For HDV to Blu-ray and DVD

What is the best strategy for avoiding unnecessary rendering and transcoding issues? I edit HDV or AVCHD (from a DataVideo DN-60) in Premiere Pro CS6. I want to output to multiple formats - DVD, Blu-ray and Flash from the same project. I'd like to maximize quality as well to fit project on disk.
I'd also like to know which format most easily transcodes for my purposes. I typically shoot 23.98 or 29.98 fps 1080p, but sometimes 1080i.
I assume Dynamic Link is the way to go, but it doesn't look like the resulting settings are automatic. For example, if I go into project settings after Dynamic Linking a PPro sequence, and choose Blu-ray, I would expect the transcode settings to match the imported project. If it does not, then what should I change the default settings to?

Let me clarify the intent of my original post. I have read in places that it is best to choose export and DVD project settings that match the original footage whenever possible to avoid rendering problems. So, if I shoot and edit HDV or AVCHD footage say at 29.98 fps progressive, then what corresponding settings should I use for DVD and Blu-ray?
I see that with 29.97 fps the progressive option is not available in the Blu-ray
presets. Should I not shoot progressive then at 29.97?
How do I maximize quality of the video while fitting on a single disk? The only way to do it automatically is to Dynamic link, which you advise against. If I manually set exports, then I must calculate all the sequence outputs from Premiere. What then should my priorities be? For starters, MPEG2 Blu-ray or H.264 Blu-ray? What should take precedence, bitrate settings or number of passes?
I am also considering render/transcode speed. How do the above settings affect speed?

  • Burning HDV to Blu-Ray. HDV iMovie 6.

    Hello
I would be interested to hear from someone with experience in burning HDV to Blu-Ray, and some guidance as to what model would be appropriate, although such model may not be available in Australia.
I investigated a LaCie burner, but the specifications/system requirements only mention Mpeg2, AVCHD, and VC1. GPU ... NVIDIA 7600GT / 7900 GT. My MBP has a NVIDIA 8600GT.
I've had a project burnt commercially, but I'd like to do it myself. I hope the day will come when Apple will introduce a Blu-Ray burner, but I don't like my chances about it being compatible with the HDV format / iMovie 6.
Some feedback will be appreciated. Cheers.
    jc

JC, I'm sorry, but you have many incorrect notions.
    Blu-ray supports mpeg2 (HDV), H.264 (mpeg4), and VC1 (wmv).
"I understand that commercially available Blu-Ray recorders/burners from Panasonic or LG for instance are Mpeg4 / AVCHD compliant, and would not accept my HDV movies."
Totally wrong. The burners do not care. Quicktime is not a compressor/decompressor (codec); it is a container. So what you say about loosing "so much image quality due to compression" makes no sense.
"I know that Blu-Ray is Mpeg4, which is not quite as good a Mpeg2, due again to high level of compression."
You are totally incorrect. Mpeg4 (in its H.264/AVCHD variant) is far more efficient than mpeg2. I myself recompress my 25mbps HDV video to 11mbps H.264 video for encoding to Blu-ray. If done right, one can achieve far higher quality per gigabyte because of the higher rate of compression.
I think you are confusing what the camera does with what you can do after filming. If I owned an AVCHD camera, it might lose quality due to the higher rate of compression, but that is because it is encoding at a constant bitrate on the fly. If you start with mpeg2/HDV and transcode the right way, you end up with a more compressed but equally good movie by transcoding with variable bitrate and multipass encoding.
And I do "what [you] do"; but you seem to think that a brand of burner prefers a video format. This is completely incorrect.
JC, I hope you can understand this. I think you are causing yourself undue frustration because you have some misunderstandings.
    Cheers,
    Jeremy

  • Workflow for AVCHD -- Blu-Ray

I have a Canon Vixia HFS100 that I've been using for personal video. The camera can shoot 1080/60i or 1080/30p. I've been shooting 30p. I'm looking for comments on my current work flow, which is:
    1. Shoot video in 30p.
    2. Log and transfer into FCP from AVCHD folder using ProRes 422.
    3. Place in sequence set to 1920x1080, aspect ratio HDTV1080i, square pixel, no field dominance, 29.97 timing.
    4. Edit then send to Compressor
    5. Compressor settings are H.264 for Blu-Ray, stream usage Blu-Ray, frame rate 29.97, average rate about 17 MBps, 25 MBps max, frame controls off
    6. Burn in Toast or Encore
The result looks very good, but I wonder if it could be better or if I'm forgetting something.
Also, the result is almost "too good", meaning there is almost too much detail on the screen for the eye to get, so sometimes the image is wearying to watch, unlike a Blu-Ray film which is detailed yet smooth. Is there a way to "smooth out" the video? Reduce frame rate to 24 or some such?

    Rob Reuland wrote:

LOL. Isn't that the point of HD; Quality? If I wanted less detail I'd probably shoot at a lower definition or add a slight blur to the footage on your timeline...
If I wanted less quality, I'd just tie a cam to my head and shoot in SD.

  • How to Export HDV for Blu-Ray?

When editing in DV mode, I would export an avi and a wav file, use Tmpgenc to convert the avi to an m2v file, then import the m2v and wav files into Tmpgenc DVD Author 16 to build a menu and burn a DVD. How do I burn a Blu-Ray disc after editing HDV? What are the steps? (I have a Blu-Ray burner and Blu-Ray discs.) I downloaded Tmpgenc Authoring Works 4 Trial, but it wouldn't recognize an m2v file that I made using Adobe Encoder. I can't use Encore because something screwed up upon installation and now it refuses to install it again. All I get are error messages.

Yes, fixing an installation is a pain but it will help you in the long run.  You're asking for an aspirin to take away the pain of a broken leg.  Fix the leg.
My thought would be that even if you try to work a blu-ray with some other program, your system problems will cause it to have the same problem.
Try a simple uninstall of Adobe products, get and run the CS4 clean script, run whatever disk checking program you have on the system, do whatever maintainence is appropriate and then reinstall the Adobe apps, run the updaters and hopefully you'll be good to go.
It's a pain, but it will likely be worth it.

  • Shooting/Editing HDV Before Blu-Ray Equipment Is Available ?

I have recently purchased a Canon HV20 consumer HDV camcorder. However, I have not got any Blu-Ray burning/playback equipment and will not be getting any until the prices drop to a quarter of the present levels.
This means that I am presented with a number of choices as to how I shoot and edit the material.
I have worked out the following solutions but would value any comments as to their feasibility etc.
    1. The camera can shoot both HDV and DV. I think my best choice is to shoot HDV (for future re-editing) even though my final output will be DV at present. The only downside I can see is that I believe that HDV motion does not look as good as DV ?
    2. The camera can down-convert the HDV to DV so should I capture the down-converted video and edit in DV or would it be preferable to keep everything as HDV ? I am inclined to prefer the latter option.
    3. Assuming that I shoot and edit in HDV is the best and simplest way of transferring the project to DVD by selecting File>Export>QuickTime Movie and then importing it into iDVD/DVDSP ? (Actually, iDVD does everything I require).
    4. I believe that a standard definition DVD made from HDV material looks better than one made from DV. Is this correct ?
    Ian.

    4) Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I work with baseband video, both SD and HD, and I find even cross-converted HD (1080 to 720 and visa versa) to be ugly and the hardware cross/down/up converters I have to deal with are obscenely expensive. Again, if you like the product, that's all the matters.
    3) Best and simplest are often mutually exclusive ideas. This workflow has been talked about for years on the board now, not sure if anyone's come up with anything that everyone likes. Search for the The Bonsai Method, that seemed to be a happy medium.
    2) See #4 above. I should think that that you'd want to capture native what you shot but then I would recommend that you do a test to see which method you like better. I'm sure there will be others talking about the need for "future proofing" which as an idea I think is kinda funny as who really knows what the future is. I found some discs for a Bernoulli drive the other day, that was the future then.
    1) See #2. Your point about HDV motion is reasonable but like anything, the video format is just a tool to be considered. Many folks don't even bother to think about the package acquiring that video format. Your HV20 is TINY!! Tiny means small lensing, small imagers which play the largest part in the quality of the acquisition.
I saw an hd broadcast on a Sony tube hdtv via DishNetwork of "The Deadliest Catch" which is acquired through sony hdv cameras. I, frankly, was shocked at how good the show looked. I found a lot of artifacting but honestly, given the tech specs of the blasted format, that HDV should not have looked that good.

  • Advice on CS4 system config for AVCHD/Blu-Ray

    Hi,
I need some advice for a CS4 system  config.
I am currently building this system for editing uncompressed SD/HD/AVCHD video and authoring Blu-Ray, Flash, SD DVD's.
This is being built a local comp store and parts are already coming in, so any changes would be extras, and I'm on a budget. I know I should have posted this before, but reading conflicting reports on config/drive issues raised some questions and concerns.
    Here's the current specs.....
750W Corsair ATX Power supply w/140mm  fan
GlacialTech SilentBlade II 120mm case  fan
ASUS P6T motherboard w/Triple Channel  mem support
    Intel Core i7 920 2.66 Ghz  processor
    Kingston SSD(Now V-Series) 128gb,  SATA 300 boot drive
    Seagate ST31500341AS 1.5TB 7200RPM  HDD X 2 in RAID 0 Stripe (Internal)
    2GB DDR3 PC3-10666 (1333MHz) Memory X  6=12GB RAM
nVidia Quadro FX1800 graphics card w/Elemental Accelerator
LG Blu-Ray SuperMulti Blue DVD Burner
2TB USB External HHD (attached via  USB)
2TD Firewire External HHD (attached  via Firewire 800)
4 Pin Molex to 2 x SATA power  adapter
4 live squirrels with hi-power hot  peanuts in hamster wheel
    Windows 7x64bit
I'll be using CS4 Production Premium  (upsell package) for Windows.
    1. Is it possible to run CS4 on an SSD drive (as the OS boot and app's drive)? I've heard mixed reports that CS4 does not play well with SSD's.
    2. When configuring CS4 for a project, which drive should each project element/asset go to maximize speed?  After seeing so many conflicting articles, I'm completely lost on cache drive vs. media/project files vs. backup drives.
    3. Should I use RAID 0 for my scratch discs (for performance) and just manually backup the project to an external HDD?  (I hear horror stories of these drives freezing in RAID).
    7. Should I wear boxers or briefs while editing?
    Thanks in advance!

    1. Yes, you can use a SSD as a boot disk for OS & programs. No problem.
2 & 3. Make sure you do NOT get the 7200.11 Seagates. You MUST only use the 7200.12 version. I would NOT put them in a (R)aid0, especially not with Seagates. Instead of two 1.5 TB disks, you can consider to get one 1.5 TB for source/media and two smaller disks, one for projects/scratch and one for exports.
Not all P6T mobo's have FW800 on board. You may be limited to FW400. For external (backup) storage you are better off with eSATA.
    7. Definitely boxers. It fits better with your climbing boots and real editors always wear climbing boots when sitting at their editing station, just in case a mountain suddenly appears on the monitor.

  • HDV to Blu-Ray and DVD questions!

So I shot a bunch of footage that I need to turn into a DVD and Blu-Ray. I have some questions regarding these 2 issues.
First of all, I captured all the footage HDV settings 1440 x 1080. I am using Final Cut Pro 5. I am having some issues with the footage trying to multicam edit. It's making me render it out, which takes about 8 hours for 20 minutes.
What is the best way to go from HDV back to DV so I can put it on DVD? Can I export straight from the HDV footage to mpeg2 or is there a different way I should go about it?
My next question is. For Blu-Ray video, how do I export the HDV footage in FCP so I can use it in Adobe Encore? Any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The easiest way to convert HDV to DV is to use the camera or deck to do this Down Convert.
Edit and export to Compressor for DVD.
Multiclip editing is not something I can help you with as I haven't had any success with it.
For Encore you could export as a self contained .mov then import into Encore. You might want to try working with Compressor first.
    Good Luck

  • If you can't wait to get your feet wet with Blu-Ray or HD DVD...

    ...then dive in
    Scenarist 4
    . 8)
And check your pockets and the couch for some loose change: 8/
Apparently Scenarist Blu-Ray is available for a mere $59,999, the HD version for the same measly $59,999 and the matching encoder,
    CineVision
, goes for just $69,999. Or get the real deal: Buy all three, for only $149,999. B) XD

The pricing is truly scary, considering there are no final specs for BRD as yet.
Seems it is effectively telling all small authoring houses to go to hell. Any bets the counter effect of this is going to be a rapid way of ensuring it's early demise?
The "additional" CineVision seems to be mandatory as well, unless of course you already have the following:
    VC1 encoder
    H.264 encoder
    HD compatible MPEG-2 encoder
    Dolby Media Encoder
DTS-HD encoder (always assuming these latter 2 are included. If not, then be prepared to stump up another $8,000 for the Dolby Media Encoder, Mac OSX only, Beta only)
    See http://www.sonic.com/products/Professional/CineVision/quicklook.aspx
    for full details.
It is also going to ensure that SD DVD (To think I got so much
    i stick
in other places for using that acronym a few months back too)
is not going anywhere for a good few years as yet.

  • AVCHD Blu-ray passthrough clarification

    Hi,
I think some clarification about the AVCHD to Blu-ray passthrough needs to come from someone at Adobe who can give us the final word on this.
From what I gather from a number of posts that have touched on this subject, the ONLY way to go from AVCHD directly to Blu-ray in Encore without transcoding, is to import a raw (unedited, untrimmed) AVCHD file into Encore as a Timeline.
All along I believed that I could use Dynamic Link to import a P Pro AVCHD sequence that would not need to be transcoded. But I have not been able to do that. Even if it is cuts-only with no effects or any other kind of files.
I have been able to import the files I used in that sequence into Encore, and then I do get the message that the "Blu-ray Transcode Status" is "Don't Transcode." But I haven't been able to get that message using any other workflow. And clearly that is not a workable solution for most situations.
Has anyone been able to dynamically link a P Pro sequence and do a passthrough to Blu-ray without transcoding? If so, would you give us some insight into how you did it?
    Thanks,
    Jeff Sengstack

    See this thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3045149#3045149
    Note two inmportant things:
    a) The promotional information that the original postger refers to no longer says anything about AVCHD in the Encore section (the discussion was in the CS5 days). But my post suggests that it was there and it only claimed that Encore could take AVCHD from camera (if it was legal BD) and not transcode it in an Encore project. Premiere still does not provide smart rendering, so once the materials comes into PR and gets exported, it is not the same as was you are looking for.
    b) The "solution" in that thread I believe involved the edited material in Premiere being transcoded. If that is happening, it really doesn't seem to me to matter that it is something other than AVCHD.
See Encore help regarding AVCHD passthrough:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/encore/cs/using/WSbaf9cd7d26a2eabfe807401038582db29-7ebfa.html #WSc1b83f70210cd101-82aadf112511d10d96-8000
Note the first comment at the bottom, that explains that the additional qualifier is that the AVCHD is BD legal, and that at least one camera's output was not legal.

  • AVCHD - Blu-ray: what settings for best quality?

    Hi Folks,
I've got a BD-burner and I want to export my edited HD avchd footage to BD with minimal quality loss.
Can you please advice me on the right settings?
    * should I go for the 'Match Sequence Settings' option in the export menu?
    * or probably select 'MPEG 2 Blu-ray' option for best quality?
    * what is better in terms of quality of the outcome: 'MPEG 2 Blu-ray' vs. 'H.264 Blu-ray'?
Finally, I have a question related to Adobe Encore: the same footage exported through Adobe Media Encoder in 'MPEG2 Blu-ray' (takes 13 GB), Adobe Encore reports will take only 8GB?!? I'm puzzled here. How come the same footage got exported into files with different length? Is there a way to set the Encore to export in the maximum possible quality? Where can I locate this menu setting?
    Thank you very much!

Forgot to mention, I'm using CS5 and I shoot in avchd, 30fps,
    1980i
