Format utility in Solaris 10
During the preparation of my SCSA exam I found the folowing:
Place each format utility by the right function
Updates the disks VTOC ---- Partition
Reads and displays labels ---- Disk
Allows you to select a new disk ---- Label
Saves disk and slice information to a file ---- Save
Alters size slices ---- Fomat
Formats and analyzes the disk ---- Verify
My answers are:
Updates the disks VTOC --> Label
Reads and displays labels --> Verify
Allows you to select a new disk --> Disk
Saves disk and slice information to a file --> Save
Alters size slices --> Partition
Formats and analyzes the disk --> Format
But the answers in the course are:
Updates the disks VTOC --> Save
Reads and displays labels --> Label
Allows you to select a new disk --> Verify
Saves disk and slice information to a file --> Format
Alters size slices --> Partition
Formats and analyzes the disk --> Disk
So can someone tell me what the real answers are because I don't know it anymore. ;-)
I would say your answers are correct:
FORMAT MENU:
disk - select a disk
type - select (define) a disk type
partition - select (define) a partition table
current - describe the current disk
format - format and analyze the disk
fdisk - run the fdisk program
repair - repair a defective sector
label - write label to the disk
analyze - surface analysis
defect - defect list management
backup - search for backup labels
verify - read and display labels
save - save new disk/partition definitions
inquiry - show vendor, product and revision
volname - set 8-character volume name
!<cmd> - execute <cmd>, then return
quit
format>
Your instructor agrees with the answers in the course???

Format utility unable to select labeled disk
I have a system running Solaris 10 x86, booted with 64 bit kernel.
Recently, i decided to add a second hard drive to the system.
The drive is Seagate ST340014A (40GB ATA drive). I ran format and managed to fdisk, partition & label the disk, but later, i found the partition scheme ineffective and decided to re-partition the disk. Here my troubles have started.
When i ran format utiltity again, and select the drive number it gave me:
"selecting c1d0"
and freezed.
On the system console and in /var/adm/messages i had the following:
Apr 17 19:01:20 host.tld.com scsi: WARNING: /pci@0,0/pci-ide@f,1/ide@1 (ata5):

This set of messages was repeated on a regular time intervals.
The format utility neither exited nor seleted the disk. I had to kill -9 it several times in order to stop it.
I have created the filesystems on the drive, without problems and i can use it, but i can't re-partition it :(
Could someone point me to the root of the problem and/or its decision ?
Thanks in advance!i'm encountering exactly the same problem.
One question : How does your partition table looks like ? -
Is there a similar 'setkeycodes' utility in Solaris?
I'm currently working on using an LK461-A2 keyboard for Solaris on x86. There are 6 keys not working. I was able to get them working on Linux by using the setkeycodes utility to map the scan code to an appropriate key code.

Is there a similar utility in solaris that can be used to map scancodes to keycodes?
I would greatly appreciate a possible solution.

I am just starting a project in Java (my first java project). I am wondering whether there is a concept in java that similar to the structure in C or C++.In C++ a struct and a class is exactly the same (apart from two minor differences).
The C++ concept of a struct/class is supplied in Java by three language elements with different properties, namely the class, the interface and the enum.
In my c++ projects, I used to define all my structures in a single file (say structures.cpp) and included the file in other files wherever I need. Is there a way to do similar thing in Java? How classes are distributed on files is not a Java language issue. It's a question for your development system. Most development system allow you to have one public class on each .java file only. So I suggest you nest the "structs" like this,
public class Struct {
public static class One {
public static class Two {
public static class Three {
// etcetera
}The above can be kept on a single .java file and you just import it whenever you need any of the Struct classes.
The nested "structs" will behave like ordinary Javav classes apart from their naming. Their names must be qualified with the name of the outer class like Struct. One, Struct. Two, etcetera. -
Is there to find an FTP utility for solaris 8?
Prefered without root permissions.
I'm not sure if it's the correct forum for such a question, but it's the closest one I've found.
Thanks. Not sure if this is what you are looking for. Root under Solaris 8 does not have permission unless you edit /etc/ftpusers. As far as an FTP utility under Solaris, it already exists and is executed with ftp <I.P address>

Format Utility not detecting the external HardDrive
Hi,
I have got a new WesternD 1TB hardDrive.
I am trying to add it to my unix box but I have some problems.
I can do fdisk and set 10% of it as Solaris2:
# fdisk /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0p0
Cylinders
Partition Status Type Start End Length %
========= ====== ============ ===== === ====== ===
1 Active Solaris2 1 6080 6080 10
2 DOS-BIG 6081 12160 6080 10
Still when I run the "format" utility I don't see the Drive.
I need to know how can I slice the fdisk partition as just trying to mount the fdisk partition is failing with:
# mount /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p1 /mount-part1/
mount: /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p1 is not this fstype
Even-though I have specifiied in the fdisk the partition to be of type SOLARIS2 or UNIX.
Thanks,
JavaMohHi Everyone,
I have found the solution, we should use rmformat instead of format to partition removable media.

How to use makefile utility in Solaris
Hi all,
I am new to Solaris platform, but have strong desire to play with Solaris.
I have downloaded many utility programs (source code version) for Solaris like LAN-Chat, UNRAR, Screensaver, etc
For example, I downloaded "xscreensaver-5.02.tar.gz" and unzipped to a folder.
I referred the readme.txt where i have been guided as follows to install.
1. ./configure
2. make
3. make install
But i get an error message in the second step while installing. Can i have a detailed explanation regarding[u] "How to Install" a software using the "MAKE" utitlity.
Thanks in advance,
regards,

Launch RCU utility on Solaris in CLI mode
Hi ,
We have a scenario to launch RCU utility to create MDS schema from Solaris machine.
The RCU utility can be launched only on Linux and Windows.
We have tried the following workaround to launch on Solaris and this seems to be going well.
Copied the executable (/bin/rcu) shell script as "/bin/rcu_solaris"
User Solaris JDK on the executable shell script (bin/rcu_solaris’) i.e.JRE_DIR="/sparcv9/packages/jdk/jdk1.6.0_33" in place default Linux JDK.
Can someone suggest whether it's only the JDK dependency which is stopping RCU to be launched on other platforms(Solaris) and any gaps with the above approach?
Thanks,
RajeshHi Erik,
As part of our automation framework, we are trying to automate this end to end application installation setup process(including MDS schema creation using RCU ) and we are in the process of certifying the automation process on other platforms like Solaris.
If this has to be launched only on Windows or Linux then it has to be manual process. therefore, we have tried this workaround of pointing to a Solaris JDK and launched it successfully.
We use this tool only to create MDS schema as a pre-installation step. Also, we believe from FMW 12c onwards this is part of Weblogic and should be able to launch on other platforms as well.
Just for the MDS schema creation with PS5 release, should we go with the mentioned approach of launching it on Solaris ? Considering that We will not disturb the original (/bin/rcu) executable shell script. We always take a copy(say /bin/rcu_solaris ) with Solaris JDK added for running it.
Appreciate your inputs on this.
Thanks,
Rajesh -
Hi all, I think I got a problem with my R100 hard drive. I cannot high level format by some reasons, bad sectors I guess. So, I'm trying to find a solution and I guess the low level format could be a solution for this. But, I couldn't find a utility for low level format. So, is there any utility I can do low level format R100 Hard?
Thanks in advanceHi,
You don't wanna low-level format anything these days! All current hard drives won't even let you. I had a problem with bad sectors and metallic noises from my drive last month and I tried to fix it with utilities like "spinrite" and a myriad of other software without success. I used spinrite to rebuild the hd. It took three(!!!) days! The drive then worked for a couple of hours before it developed new read errors. This symptom means that there are un-recoverable errors on the drive and you want to buy a new one.
If you have warranty left, RMA it, otherwise go and buy a new drive. In Sweden the HD was incredibly expensive, about $400 (ridiculus, right!!). I had to buy this drive: http://www.sarotech.com/english/cgi/pd.cgi?cmd=view&rno=5
for $260 and grab the hd from the casing.
The Toshiba part# for the 40gb hd is: MK4004GAH
Search for it. Here's one link: http://www.span.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=23_504&products_id=3149
Also, read some more about low-level formatting and try out spinrite here: www.spinrite.com -
I can find gunzip utility in solaris 2.6
Hi,
when i issue find . -name gunzip -print command in my solaris 2.6. I cant find it.
how can i add gunzip back to my platform?
Jeff2 things,
1. Your find command will find what you're looking for if what
you're looking for is under your present directory. That's what
the . is indication. The search your entire system, replace the
. with a / which will tell find to start from the root directory
and work down. The only problem with that is, if you have mounted
drives, find will try to search them (this isn't always
desirable), and if you are using find as a user you will see a
large number of permission denied messages.
2. If you are using /bin/ksh for your shell, another way to find
a command (assuming it's in your path) is to use the 'whence'
command. Here's an example:
ksh> whence gunzip
/usr/bin/gunzip
ksh>
If your system doesn't have gzip or gunzip, go to the gnu web page

Anyone can give me a hint,
Thanks,
WeiYeah, you probably want to go through rebuilding the device paths. This amounts to removing everything in /dev/osa/dev/dsk, /dev/osa/dev/rdsk, and /devices/pseudo/rdnexus. Then performing
a reconfiguration boot.
If you're uncomfortable with this, open a service call, or look for
the string hot_add, under Infodocs and Symptoms and Resolutions in the Sunsolve search engine.
Another string is "Syncing lad and format".
Good luck! -
Portege M200 - SD Format Utility and Boot utility won't work
I can't get either the SD format or the boot utilities to work. Neither of them see the SD card which is a new Panasonic 256MB one. I've uninstalled the utilities and SD drivers and reinstalled them (in the correct order, as far as I can tell) but to no avail.
Has any one any suggestions as to why these won't work?Smart Card services are not set to automatic but I've resolved the problem in any event. It turns out that the SD host controller driver was incorrect. I had obviously updated it at some stage and that resulted in a Microsoft driver being installed instead of the Toshiba one. Once I installed the correct Toshiba driver and reinstalled the format and boot utilities evrything is now working properly.
But thanks for your suggestion. -

DBLoad utility: (huge) difference between Windows and Linux
Hello
I have a backfile of 55M entries to load. I have prepared it under Linux (Dual Core machine + 4GB - Mandriva distribution - java 1.6). When I run DbLoad, here is the (partial) log:
java -Xmx2048m -jar /home/pd51444/jNplMatchBackfile_Main_0.2/lib/je-3.3.69.jar DbLoad -h . -s group.db -f group.db.txt -v
loaded 2817812 records 63275 ms - % completed: 5
loaded 5624893 records 141023 ms - % completed: 10
loaded 8462602 records 962019 ms - % completed: 15
loaded 11285385 records 2401566 ms - % completed: 20

loaded 22567310 records 2226015 ms - % completed: 40
loaded 25376363 records 19662455 ms - % completed: 45
Then I copied the exact same file on my Windows laptop (dual core + 2GB - XP - java 1.6), and DbLoad goes much faster:
C:\nplmatch\db>java -Xmx1024m -jar ..\jar\je-3.3.69.jar DbLoad -h . -s group.db -f group.db.txt -v

Also I use the same je.properties file on both platforms.
Any idea where this performance problem comes from?
Thanks in advance
Best regards
PhilippeHello Phillipe,
Nothing jumps out at me, but you might try the following:
. Check the status of disk write caches. On linux, the cache may be disabled and it may be enabled on windows.
. Does the windows machine have an SSD?
. Run with -verbose:gc to see if the Linux is being held up by full GC's.
. Use top or some other utility to see if something else is running on the linux box.
. Take some random c-\'s to get some stack traces to see what is going on when things get slow.
. Check on the JVM ergonomics. You may be getting a server or client JVM without knowing. Force it one way or the other with -server or -client.
Here is a (future) FAQ entry regarding disk write caches (poorly formatted at the moment):
During my system testing I pulled the power cord on my server to make the ultimate test of JE's durability claims. I am using commitSync() for my transactions, but some of the data that JE said it had committeed was not on disk when the system came back up. What gives?
Quoting the Berkeley DB Reference Guide:
Many disk drives contain onboard caches. Some of these
drives include battery-backup or other functionality that guarantees that all
cached data will be completely written if the power fails. These drives can
offer substantial performance improvements over drives without caching support.
However, some caching drives rely on capacitors or other mechanisms that
guarantee only that the write of the current sector will complete. These
drives can endanger your database and potentially cause corruption of your
data.
To avoid losing your data, make sure the caching on your disk
drives is properly configured so the drive will never report that data has
been written unless the data is guaranteed to be written in the face of a
power failure. Many times, this means that write-caching on the disk drive
must be disabled.
Some operating systems enable the disk write cache by default.
If you need true durability in the face of a power failure, then you should
verify that the disk write cache is disabled or that you have some alternative
means of ensuring durability (e.g. nvram, battery backup, an Uninterruptible
Power Supply (UPS), Solid State Disk (SSD), etc.) Some disk drives may
actually require changing hardware jumpers to enable/disable the write cache.
You can check the status of the write cache using the
hdparm utility on Linux and the format utility on Solaris.
On Windows, use the Windows Explorer. Right click on
the disk drive that you want to check, select Properties,
click on the Hardware tab, select the desired disk, click
on the Properties button, click on
Policies and verify the cache setting with the check box.
On Windows Server 2003 you generally disable the write caching
from within the RAID controller software (OEM specific). -
Is fake utility program for sun sparc solaris 2.6 available.?
Hai ,
Fake is a IP address take over tool used in linux.
"fake is a simple utility designed to enable the switching in of backup servers buy bringing up an additional interface and using arp spoofing to take over the ip address. Either additional physically or logical interfaces can be used."This is all about fake.
I searched a lot to get fake utility for solaris 2.6.but i could't.
Is any fake utility version for solaris .? or the same of its kinds.?
Please help me
Thank you
Arunhai Alan,
Let me specific on the problem.
I developed a fail-over software for Linux servers(need 2 servers of same configuration). In this servers ,there are two modes , Active and passive mode. At a time one can be active, and other passive. Clients can communicate the with the servers through a common alias ip address. But the actual ip address of servers can be different.Normally Active server would be having the alias ip.
When switching take place from active to passive mode, server will be assigned with its actual ip address. When switching takes place other passive server becomes active and its get common alias ip address.?
This is the actual scenario . And fake is used in Linux to refresh the arp table of immediate switching device.
But i came to know that solaris os would do it normally when it switches .?
Is this possible with solaris.? -
How to install solaris 8 in 30 GB ata/100 drive ?
Solaris installation fails saying that there is no suitable hard disk or partition available in my system.
If I run format utility I can see the hard drive but
Solaris does not recognize it's partitions and requires me to enter nr of cyls, heads etc...
I do not go further because it may destroy my whole partitions.
have 30 GB ata/100 Seagate hard drive and there is
a 5 GB empty slot reserved for Solaris installation.
It's just after a 12.5 GB of first primary (with logicals) and just before a 10 GB of another primary.
I've tried followings without success:
1- Leaving 5 GB unpartitioned
2- Created a 5 GB primary partition without format
3- Created a 5 GB ext2 (using linux) partition
4- Created a 5 GB ext2 with ufs format
Everytime I've got same error, Solaris cant find a partition. I suspect it does not recognize hard disks larger than either 8 Gig or 1024 cylinders or ata/100.
What can I do?I downloaded the Solaris 8 for x86 yesterday and burned them into CDs.
I have the following hardware configuration.
- Intel i815E mainboard
- Intel PIII 733
- KingMax 256M 133MHz
- Maxtor 30G hard disk
- Acer 50X CDROM
The inistallation initially gave me a warning.
WARNING: ACPI Table not in Reclaim Memory
And it gave more warning during the installation process:
Resource Conflicting -- Both devices are added
The conflicting devices are:
- PNP0C01
- ISY0050
Unfortunately, I don't know what they are. :(
However, these are not the whole story. The installer went ahead to
let me fdisk my 30G hard disk.
I accepted the "Solaris Default" and answered Y to the question "Can
swap slice start at the beginning of the disk?". Immediately, the
system hangs there but the keyboard is responsive that I can type
anything I want.
In addition, I use the 512M as swap as suggested by the installer.
Can anyone help me with this situation? I have tried installing this
version of Solaris for several times but with no luck. :S
Any insights are highly appreciated! Thanks!
