Formating in Disk Utilility (Leopard Version)

Fix request for bug in Disk Utility.
I was formating a USB Drive (previously formated as OSX Journaled) into Dos format and it said that it had formated properly, however Windows XP could not recognise the drive.
I Formated it again and this time noticed that even though I was reformating it to Dos that the Device still was reading as Mac OSX but the partition was showing as dos.
No matter what I did to the USB drive it would not read in XP.
I reformated it in XP and finished what I was working on... however I have done this hundreds of times in Tiger Disk Utility and never had this problem.
I request a new version of Disk Utility to be released from Apple to the Leopard System and when they fix the Repair permissions hang.... include this fix as well.
Love Leopard. Early adopters have this sort of problem on any system... no worries just update it when you can. Thanks Apple!
(PS One claim on the internet for this same problem claimed that making multiple partitions on the drive that needs to be reformated then removing them using Disk Utility and Then reformating the drive could make it actually format the whole device properly. - Have not tried this myself however. I could not find the link again so use at your own risk. For the moment easiest way is to reformat the drive on an Windoes machine if you have one handy.)

1) By installing Snow Leopard Server on the primary partition or
2) By cloning the 2d partition to the 1st partition. You can use CarbonCopyCloner to do this. Understand, however, that you have to start from a drive that is not the source or destination drive for the cloning process. You'll need at least a basic install of OS X on a 3d drive to do the cloning.
Or, if you're ok with some 'back & forth' operations you could reinstall OS X on the 1st partition; start up from it & clone the 2d partition to a .dmg file on the 1st partition. (The 2d partition is the source and the .dmg file is the destination.) Then copy the .dmg from the 1st partition to the 2d partition. Then start up from the 2d partition and clone from the .dmg file back to the 1st partition. The CCC documentation will help you understand the cloning/restoring from a .dmg file.
Once you have restored to the 1st partition and completed your testing to make sure everything works right, you could then use Disk Utility to extend the first partition to the remainder of the drive, thereby eliminating the 2d partition.
I have done this, but only with client versions of OS X. Should work with server versions regardless, but just wanted you to know.

  • Can I restore the Snow Leopard version of 'Preview' for use in Mountain Lion?

When running Snow Leopard I enjoyed using Preview with my HP C7280 All-in-One Scanner/Printer.  I could place several items on the glass plate and Preview would then carry out a "preview scan". The superior edge detection software contained in Preview would recognise that there was more than one item on the scanner glass and put a marquee rectangle around each object (even separate images in a magazine page).  I could de-select objects if I wanted to at this point to avoid scanning them, or I could opt to scan.
Preview would then scan all selected items in one go outputting a separate file for each one. No need to re-scan and select the next object.  Preview would do the lot in one go! This was fantastic for saving  time for me.
Preview really 'kicked the crap' out of my PC at work. The best the scanning software on the PC could was to auto-detect a single item.*  So if I have a lot to do, I have to preview scan and then save/scan each item individually to achieve the same result.
All this changed when I updated from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.  The scanning is nothing like as effective and time saving as before.  Preview just scans the whole glass plate straight to a file irrespective of what is on it, no preview scan and no object edge detection whatsoever; not even a single object like on my old PC at work. Absolute rubbish!
I really want to restore the functionality I had before. So I wonder, is it best to revert my iMac to Snow Leopard, or can I achieve this another way?   I don't necessarily want to abandon Mountain Lion - but I will if I have to.
Is it possible to restore the Snow Leopard version of Preview whilst keeping Mountain Lion? Or maybe download the Lion version from somewhere instead - assuming that the Lion version still has same functionality as the Snow Leopard version?
*Even this is better than what Preview does since I updated to Mountain Lion

It's either that or finding other software for your scanning needs. For example, Image Capture comes with OS X, VueScan 9.2.09, ExactScan Pro 2.24.
Alternatively, partition your hard drive and install Snow Leopard on another volume.
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive. Use the Snow Leopard installer DVD to install Snow Leopard on your new volume.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.

I see that your Question has languished for some period of time without response. You have posted your issue in Using Apple Support Communities whose topic is 'How to use this forum software's interface, features and/or how to find what you wish'. It is a relatively low traffic and inappropriate forum for your problem. I will ask our Hosts to move it to " MacBook Pro " where it may get a more rapid response from your fellow users.

  • Format my disk- MacBook Pro

Hi! I upgrade my software to Lion so I don't have the CDs to format my disk..
What I should do? Should I use my snow leopard and then upgrade? or what I have to do?
I want to format all my macbook pro for the first time in 3 years. Is a :
    MACBOOK PRO
    15-inch, Mid 2010
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5

Why? There's no reason to reformat the HD. If you do it, you'll lose everything that's on it. The way to do with Lion is to boot into recovery mode (restart holding down the CMD+R keys), launch Disk Utility, and have at it.

I recently updated to snow leopard version 10.6.3 and quicktime player isn't working.  What do I need to do to get it working again?  I have quicktime player version 10.0.

Mac OS X 10.6 includes QuickTime versions 10.0 and 7.6.3. The QuickTime 7 player will only be present if a QuickTime Pro key was present at the time of installation, or if specified as part of a custom install, or individually downloaded:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl923
Snow Leopard update 10.6.4 included an update to 7.6.6 (if installed). You can install it from the above link  even though it says for 10.6.3. It's the same version of QuickTime Player 7.6.6.
(Only QuickTime Player 7.6.3 or 7.6.6 can be updated to "Pro".)
A Mac OS X v10.6, OS X Lion, and OS X Mountain Lion-compatible version of QuickTime Player 7 is available for use with older media or with AppleScript-based workflows. QuickTime Player 7 can be used to playback formats such as QTVR, interactive QuickTime Movies, and MIDI files. Also, it supports QuickTime 7 Pro registration codes for access to QuickTime Pro functionality.

  • Win7 crash when format 4TB disk on MSI MS-7613

    Hi
I own a HP Pavilion Elite HPE-030sc system. This one have the MSI MS-7613 motherboard with Intel P55 Express Chipset.
The OS is Windows 7 64bit.
I want to change the data disk (the second disk) with a new Seagate 4TB hard drive. Original there are 2 750GB drives in it. The original boot disk stays there, so no problem with the BIOS.
What works: Boots fine. DiskPart - clear - GPT - add primary partition - yes got my 4TB partition.
What dose not work: Format drive (NTFS)
When I start the format, it runs for some time (5-10 minutes), the the PC reboots. Sometimes it gives a blue screen for 2 seconds.
I have tried to format via Disk Management and via DiskPart. Also boot to Safe Mode and did the format, but same problem.
    Please help me....
I'm on the latest official BIOS version for this system.
But are there any separate firmware update for the SATA controller?
That will be part of the P55 chipset, right?
    regards Georg
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I did find a solution to this problem.
Just go to intel.com and download a newer "intel rapid storage driver".
I did not take the lastest ver. 13.xxxx
Read on some wiki that my chipset was not supportet.
So just go for the ver. 12.9.0.1001.
And Wupti, all 4GB was there, and quict format took only short time as expected.
The WRONG answer you give me, and point to the MS site, is if the disk should be the boot disk.
But please read my Q. I want this to be at DataDisk only. And Win7 fully support this. So when when jus the the OS is booted, there is no councern about BIOS.

If I am reading your issue correctly. Windows 8 came pre-installed on a computer with a hard disk setup as a GPT with UEFI configured.
If this is the case then the outcome you are experiencing is correct.
Windows 7 does not inherently have the ability to install into a GPT disk from the base installation.
The Windows 7 DVD is designed to install using BIOS mode.
Also note that Windows 7 x86 does not support UEFI mode.

  • 1) How to Boot from SAN for T4-1 Server with Solaris 11.1 OS on the disk? 2) How to SMI Label/Format a disk while OS Installation in Solaris 11.1?

FYI....boot from SAN is required for physical server (T4-1) (not OVM).
    1) How to Boot from SAN for T4-1 Server with Solaris 11.1 OS on the disk?
The SAN disks allocated are visible in ok prompt. below is the output.
    (0) ok show—disks
    a) /pci@400/pci@2/pci@0/pci@f/pci@0/usb@0, 2/hub@2/hub@3/storage@2/disk
    b) /pci@400/pci@2/pci@0/pci€a/SUNW, ezalxs@0, l/fp@0, 0/disk
    e) /pci@400/pci@2/pci@0/pci@a/SUNW, ealxs@0/fp@0, 0/disk
    d) /pci@400/pci@2/pci@0/pci@8/SUNW, emlxs@0, l/fp@0, 0/disk
    e) /pci@400/pci@2/pci@0/pci@8/SUNW,enlxs@0/fp@0,0/disk
    f) /pci@400/pci@2/pci@0/pci@4/scsi@0/disk
    g) /pci@400/pci@1/pci@0/pci@4/scsi@0/disk
    h) /iscsi—hba/disk
    q) NO SELECTION
    valid choice: a. . .h, q to quit c
    /pci@400/pci@2/pci@0/pci@a/SUNW, ealxs@0/fp@0, 0/disk has been selected.
Type “Y ( Control—Y ) to insert it in the command line.
    e.g. ok nvalias mydev “Y
for creating devalias mydev for /pci@400/pci@2/pci@0/pci@a/SUNW,emlxs@0/fp@0,0/disk
    (0) ok set—sfs—boot
    set—sfs—boot ?
We tried selecting a disk and applying sfs-boot at ok prompt.
Can you please help me providing detailed pre-requesites/steps/procedure to implement this and to start boot from SAN.
    2) How to SMI Label/Format a disk while OS Installation in Solaris 11.1?
As we know that ZFS is the default filesystem in Solaris 11.
We have seen in the Oracle documentation that for rpool below are recommended:
    - A disk that is intended for a ZFS root pool must be created with an SMI label, not an EFI label.
    - Create root pools with slices by using the s* identifier.
    - ZFS applies an EFI label when you create a storage pool with whole disks.
    - In general, you should create a disk slice with the bulk of disk space in slice 0.
I have seen the solution that using format -e, we change the labelling but all the data will be lost, whats the way to apply a SMI Label/Format on a rpool disks while OS Installation itself.
Please provide me the steps to SMI Label a disk while installaing Solaris 11.1 OS.

Oracle recommends below things on rpool: (thats reason wanted to apply SMI Label)

I have a mac book pro that i bought in late 2009. My current software is snow leopard version 10.5.8. I would like to get the new lion operating system but I cant without first getting the latest version of snow leopard. however when I go to update my software it doesnt show that any update is available.

    10.5.8 is Leopard, not Snow Leopard. You need the Snow Leopard DVD;
You can get it only by phone now from Apple.
In the US, call 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask for a sales assistant. Last quoted price was $19.99 for the single-user and $29.99 for the family licence.
For other countries, check here; http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
Don't forget to ask for Sales; the tech support guys can't help.
If you want Lion, rather than Mountain Lion, the same Sales team can give you a download code to use at the Mac AppStore.
To get the App Store, you need to update your new Snow Leopard from 10.6.3 (which is the version on the installer) to 10.6.8 with the combo update; http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Be warned that the upgrades will render a lot of older software unusable, and will need new drivers for printers and scanners in all likelihood.
