Forms 6i Environment Migration to Apex?

Howdy All,
I appreciate the wealth of information in these forums!
I have a very complex form in the 6i environment that continually causes problems in an existing application.
I am tasked with determining a solution to break the complexity of the form into several forms, or somehow simplifying it. A desired solution would be to have some of the complication in the form translated somehow to data in tables that can be managed outside the form.
The form is usually a bottleneck in the development process, because so many pieces of the application are controlled through this one Form.
I have two questions:
1. Given the task, and today's advancements since 6i, what are the benefits to rewriting the form using APEX?
2. Would the APEX version be able to be implemented with the current application running in the 6i environment?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

As Dimitri said, you 'should' be able to do this in Apex, especially if you are willing to redign the form in simpler modules.
But, as an old Forms person myself (ver. 2.3), there is a learning process as well. Depending on the in-house skills and knowledge of PL/SQL, HTML, css and javascript, it could take around 6 months to get a very complex app ported over to Apex for your first Apex application (assuming the first thing you are doing is the most complex app). However, after this, your skills and development time will have dropped drastically.
I'd suggest installing Apex on a machine in your organization (if you are using Forms, you probably already have OAS setup as well). Create the DAD for Apex, and begin experimenting. Download a couple of the pre-packaged applications, play around with them, try creating your own sample app, based on a simpler application in your organization. When you get stumped, take a peek at how the pre-packaged apps work or ask questions here. After a month or two you'll begin to have an idea of what you can and can't do 'simply' in Apex. There's plenty more you can do with javascript, especially with AJAX functionality, but that's a steeper learning curve if there is no in-house expertise already.
So, you probably can convert your Forms app into Apex with some redesign. How easy it is and the timeframe involved to do it will depend a lot on the in-house expertise, but the forum is a great resource when you get stuck. Another alternative may be to hire somebody to do the complicated application for you, then for all of your other apps, take a peek at how the complicated application was put together.
Answering your questions,
1.) Forms 6i is more difficult to maintain (it's also desupported isn't it?) and Apex is free. With Oracle 11i, it's even part of the 'official' database. Apex also isn't isn't as 'proprietary' as Forms either. Most of the skills you use in Apex can be easily used in other web technologies as well, especially Oracle related ones (for the PL/SQL end of it). Javascript, HTML, css formatting, etc. can be used across a multitude of different web apps, not just Apex.
2.) Apex and Forms can run together in the same environment, so that shouldn't be an issue while you experiment to determine capabilities.
Hope this helps some,
Bill Ferguson

  • Increase in CPU Utilization after migration from APEX 3.1.2 to APEX 3.2

Has any noticed any increase in CPU Utilization after migrating from APEX 3.1.2 to APEX 3.2?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Hi Mark,
Take a look at some of the usage reports within APEX (sessions, page views etc) to get an overall feel for where the time is being consumed.
You'll also find it useful if you can run a statspack report (or AWR, ASH etc) during a busy period to be able to drill down into where that CPU is being spent.
There's no magic answers here unfortunately, you need to track it down to where the time is being spent before working back up to find out where best to tune it.

  • Problem with JQuery tab after migrated to APEX 4.0

My test application hosted on apex.oracle.com is using JQuery tab function and it is running well with APEX 3.2.1.
And now after the migration to APEX 4.0, it can not display the tab anymore.
Any idea how to solve this problem?
    Thanks a lot.

  • Problem in Themes after Migrating from APEX 4.0 to 4.2

    Dear Friends,
Recently we migrated from APEX 4.0 to 4.2. There were no errors during migration. But after migration we observed that any application with Simple Red (Theme No.1) and Scarlet (Theme 21) stopped working properly. i.e. Template button Red will not perform any task. Even changed the template of the button doesn't work.
Can any one suggest steps to solve the problem?
    Thanks in Advance.

  • Installing second domain for forms testing environment?

    Hi!
I've a physical windows server for running my forms applications (11.1). On installing fusion middleware suite I created a domain with the assistant. Further more another assistent configured my forms server into this domain.
The problem is that I've no forms testing environment. So the idea was to create another domain for testing and setup a second forms server in this new testing domain. The pysical machine has enough power to server both domains.
Is this a supported configuration and can it be done with the assistants?
    Thanks
    Markus

I wouldn't say that the additional administration effort is much or bad. I also don't agree 100% that the dev instance don't influence the prod instance when both are hosted on the same server.
When hosting both instances on one server and one oracle home you will always be on the same patchset on the OS and Oracle side.
Consider you are encountering a bug in forms when developing a new feature which is fixed in a one-off patch. To test this one-off patch in dev you most certainly will have to take down the production instance too as both of them will access the same Oracle Home and Middleware Home. Same thing is for OS patches. If you are seperating dev and prod instances on different machines you have the possibility to test your configurations proper on your test machine without influencing production.
This will guarantee you that you have always a tested environment in production.
Think about scalability: developers tend to make boo-boos while developing new things. One forms session <can> take down a whole machine (I have seen that and I have done that - on a development machine). If this happens on a development machine you have 10 angry developers which can be calmed down with a sixpack beer; 100+ people plus the managment which should be working with the software you developed are not tranquilized so easy when they cannot work for 20 minutes because of a infinite loop in development ;).
I agree that you might have additional license costs; but if memory serves Oracle VM and Oracle Enterprise Linux have no additional license costs which breaks down the costs to OFMW 11g. And I am not too sure if you have to pay (the full price) for development instances (I am a developer, not a sales person). But this is best discussed with your oracle sales representative.
Again, this is just my opinion; maybe someone else can give you more input.
    cheers

  • Error occured during Apex3.2 migration to apex 4.1

    Hi,
We have recently migrated from apex 3.2 to apex 4.1 . We noticed some GUI changes in the application after this. For example there is an image button next to the search tool bar in the interactive report. In apex 3.2 , it was in the same line and aligned with the search tool bar. However in apex 4.1 the image button seems to be flowing into the line below the search tool bar in the interactive report. We have made the button position as "right of the interactive report search bar".
    Thanks for replies in advance.

    Hi,
VC, I have tried, the logic you suggested . It dosen't seem to work. However I have notice that the alignment issue occurs only in IE8 , when i open my application in chrome. The GUI seems to work fine. What did you do? sorry for the confusion..I meant you to inspect the element and copy and paste the html code here from inside the above div in your view source

I am currently involved with the update of APEX 3.1 to 4.0. Is it possible to have the user-saved IRs in 3.1 migrated to APEX 4.0? My understanding is that the users will lose their reports once the migration takes place.
    Thanks,
    Ajay

    Hi Ajay,
If you are upgrading then there shouldn't be any problems.
Only issue raised was when moving the app from one instance to another instance with different application ID's.
For more information see Preserving User Saved Interactive Reports
    Thanks

  • How to get information from ODBC sources to Forms Builder environment

    Hi,
Could anyone help me, to get some examples or more information, that how can I get information from ODBC sources to Forms Builder environment. I have a need to read data for example to LOV.

If you are on Forms 6i you install the Oracle Client Adaptor from the Forms CD. You then have a way of connecting to ODBC datasources.
To connect to ODBC at the same time as you are connected to Oracle you can use the EXEC_SQL package to create a second connection via odbc and issue select statements against that datasource.

  • Migrating Forms with User-Info to Apex

    Hi,
i am using forms with CLIENTINFO-Bean (javabean running in forms9), to save who (OS-Username, e.g. windows user), where (workstation-name and ip-address) modified records.
I wonder if its possible to get similar functionality within apex? I assume this cannot be achived with javascript - just with a java app?
any help would be appreciated. i would really like to migrate this app to apex...
    kind regards
    Günther

    Hello Günther,
If relevant you could dive into [NTLM Aiuthentication|http://jastraub.blogspot.com/2008/03/ntlm-http-authentication-and.html].
APEX is a browser app and can even run on a mobile phone, and there is no os-user on an iPhone I guess.
In a IE environment you can get the username using an ActiveX object, but a user has to accept running such an object...
You could also go for an SSO / LDAP solution so your :APP_USER = OS Login.
I'm afraid it won't get better than that....

    Any Idea?
    Many thanks jko

    Problem solved.
Better Remove apex 3.2 (export your applications first)
Then do fresh install of apex 4.
    And it works

  • Forms system potential migration questions.

We have a forms and reports based system built in 10g.
We are considering migrating to 11g forms and reports but long term moving to ADF or APEX.
We are generally a data entry system run on intranet so my prefernence has always been APEX but management are trying to follow the Oracle roadmap which is pushing ADF.
We are a small outfit so the solution we choose will probably be the one which offers the quickest development times.
I have signed up for apex.oracle.com to have a play but seems to be taking forever to get approval!
A few questions re APEX (apologies if these are really simple)
    1) How is user access controlled. Currently all our users login via one SYSDBA user. Our current system has a logon box which then allows access to the screens they can amend. I assume APEX uses the DB user access rights?
    2) How easy is it to deploy fixes etc? We have upwards of 200 customer sites. We currently distribute fmx an RDF files on a monthly basis.
    3) Can you use key strokes? Many customers like the F Keys to be used as quick keys? i.e. in forms F10 can be save, F3 can be clear etc
    4) Can we use our existing database? Although this is many years old and all the correct constraints may not be in place (ie. a few FK/indexes may be missing - but we could try and tidy up pre migration) would it be possible to use this. We are consdiering rewriting the database but most customers will want to bring through their old data and have custom reports built on these so would struggle to rewrite)
    5) How is inheritance handled? In our forms environment all our items are inherited from one point so if we change that one point it follows through the system
    6) I have seen online demo were by people are creating mini databases from spreadsheets. Can it be setup so the users can create things like this without affecting other areas of the system?
    7) Any pros/Cons when comparing to ADF
    8) Any people any fedback from migrating from Forms
Any feedback at all is greatfully recieved.
Im looking forward to the online demo.

Sure Oracle pushes ADF, because it has cost them $$$$$$ and they want to get that back. Apex is part of the database, and as such you already have a license for it. No need for a Weblogic or OAS license.
seems to be taking forever to get approval!Went pretty fast for me a few years ago. 1-2 days if I remember correctly.
    1) There are pre-built authentication methods, but you can also create your own method (which most people do).
I assume APEX uses the DB user access rights? As in most web applications, there is only one user that actually accesses the database. And I would never ever make that a SYSDBA user!
Other users may log in via username/password that can be stored in Apex tables or your own tables. They can also be actual database users. However, since they do not connect to the database, their roles are irrelevant. You may use these roles to check authorization in your application, though.
    2) Apex exports applications in a sql file, so you can deploy applications via sqlplus (or via the Apex administrator page).
    3) The keys are actually browser keys, so you are very limited. You can use some Javascript, but forget about something like F7-F8 combination. It doesn't matter what technology you use, web is different from client/server (or the Forms Java applet). You have to rethink GUI concepts coming from Forms and going to browser applications.
    4) Yes. But like Forms, good database design makes thinks easier (like using wizards).
    5) There are all kinds of places where you can set defaults, templates etc.
    6) Yes.
    7) Google for discussions on ADF vs Apex.
    8) We use it side by side. No plans to recreate Forms as an Apex application.
Depending on the size of your Forms app, it may take a long time to re-create it in Apex. There are some Forms migration tools in Apex, but I wouldn't use those. They cannot migrate the Forms code anyway, since a browser doesn't understand pl/sql code. As said, you really have to rethink your GUI when moving to a web app.

    hi ,
use below steps for Eliminate this issue
To start the wizard version of the Forms Migration Assistant:
    1. On Windows systems, set the environment variable FORMS_PATH:
    SET FORMS_PATH=%ORACLE_HOME%\forms
On UNIX systems, set the variable FORMS_PATH as in the example below:
    setenv FORMS_PATH $ORACLE_HOME/forms
    2.
In Windows, from the Start menu, select ORACLE_HOME | Forms Developer |Oracle Forms Migration Assistant (GUI Mode), or at the command line, start the conversion utility by entering: frmplsqlconv.bat mode=wizard.
    or
    in UNIX, enter frmplsqlconv.sh mode=wizard.
