Forum section for Arch-derived and "installation-assisted" distros?

Apparently there's a policy that posts regarding Archbang, Bridge Linux and other "installation-assisted" Arch distros will be moved to that purgatory of forum sections known as "Off Topic".
I'm wondering if a new forum section could be established to accommodate discussion of these distros.
For example, I think it's helpful for Arch users to know that there are ways to achieve a quick and painless Arch installation if you don't have time to go through the config yourself. I've been using Arch for seven years and have installed it many times, but recently I needed to install Arch in a hurry. Bridge Linux let me do just that, and I suspect Archbang would have, as well.
I think the Arch forum mods are trying to keep the forum focused on the essential Arch experience of installing from scratch, editing config files, etc. That's fine, but I suggest that a section be opened for installation-assisted Arch distros to accommodate Archbang, Bridge and other distros that yield an Arch system.
People who use these "installation-assisted" distros are running full-fledged Arch Linux, not another distro derived from Arch.
As things stand, it's almost as if you shouldn't expect support on the Arch forum if your spouse or a friend installed your system for you!
Thanks.

As one of the moderators, allow me to chime in here.  First off:
dhave:  It was good trading emails with you earlier this week.  After we communicated, I saw that my colleague moved your post to off-topic.  Sorry, I did not have the opportunity to let them know you and I had communicated.  Regardless, off topic really is not purgatory -- that would be "Topics Going Nowhere" (Actually, I suppose that would be limbo in Dante's view)  The other side of Styx would be "Dustbin".  Some of the best discussions occur in off-topic
In general, I am pretty easy going and try not to interfere with healthy discussion.  We are, after all, a community.  Not everything needs to be Arch centric.  I am also fairly tolerant of questions that have clearly been asked and answered before; sometimes because new users don't know what they don't know.  I don't mind doing some hand holding.  Sadly, some folks never get with the program
Jason, Allan : good to see you both.  Hope you are having a good autumn down there.
As to other distributions, here is the thing.  These are the Arch Linux forums.  People who are researching problems here depend on these forums as a dedicated Arch resource.  The moderator team works to keep these forums on topic and prevent "contamination" from distributions that handle things differently than Arch and may cause confusion or may be plain old wrong with respect to Arch.
As such, a friendly discussion about Bridge Linux is harmless; whereas questions about Archbang (a fine distribution) on the Arch forums can be a direct cause of misinformation that creates problems for the users of both distributions.

  • $30 upgrade fee is for Wireless Workshops and Backup Assistant Plus?

I recently upgraded my device, over the phone, using the 2 year discount price of $199. I was completely unaware and never told by the VZW agent that I would be paying an extra $30 to help VZW offset the cost of Wireless Workshops and their Backup Assistant+ crap. The agent on the phone told me to expect a $199 + tax charge on my next bill but failed to mention the extra $30 and, to be quite honest, I'm pretty upset about this. I called the customer support line and was told the $30 free is there to support the cost of the Backup Assistant Plus service (which I do not use and have completely removed it from my phone because it's trash) as well as the Wireless Workshops they offer in their stores. This is complete ** and if I had been made aware of this nickle and dime scheme by VZW when I was upgrading, I would have canceled my upgrade and gone with another carrier instead of signing another 2 year contract. I will NEVER go to a workshop for a device, service, whatever that I know how to use or could spend an hour researching online so why am I having to pay for this? I use Titanium Backup Pro and the Android SDK environment to backup my phone and data instead of the clunky Backup Assistant Plus trash. In fact, I've completely removed all traces of BA+ on my phone...
So why am I "donating" $30 to Verizon for services that I, and I'm willing to bet most people, don't use? Why wasn't I made aware of this by the VZW agent I spoke to on the phone?

The final price of the phone was $260. I was told by the VZW agent to expect a ~$199 + tax ($215) charge on my next bill. There was no mention of a $30 upgrade fee. I was not notified BEFORE the purchase, and if it's listed on the discount upgrade page it's not very clear.
I did not see the articles in the news about this fee in the past and VZW did not make it clear to me that I would be charged this fee. I expect the VZW phone agent to make me aware of the fee's associated with any service I use, like this upgrade, but the agent failed to mention it.
Yes, I am complaining about the discount. I'm already unhappy that I was forced to lose my unlimited data plan when upgrading (unless I paid for the phone in full), but being charged an extra $30 for "services" like BA+ and workshops is absurd. Regardless of how much of a discount it was I don't like having surprise fee's come up on my cell phone bill. Why don't they include that free in the displayed upgrade price? Why not show $229.99 instead of $199.99?
    And it's 57% discount, not 60%+
Well according to the stats you just posted sales tax is 8% so since you insist on including that, then at full price a $600 phone plus 8% is $648. $260/$648 is 40% thus you received a 60% discount. Also even at 57%, you are complaining about a 57% discount? Really? If you went to a car dealer and got a 57% discount you'd be ecstatic. If you got a TV for 57% you'd be ecstatic.
This fee was announced April 11th 2012 It made ALL the major news sources.

There is no way you were not told in some fashion. You say VZW agent. So you ordered this over the phone? Ok so where did you see the phone you wanted? Um at this site? Well the fee is listed VERY clearly on the price of the phone. if youw ent into a VZW store it;s CLEARLY listed on the price tags.

  • Requirements for database design and installation

    Hi,
As a database administrator, how to find out whether the database is design and installed properly?
Can you please what would be the requirements to be considered towards the databse design for application developer ?
    thanks heaps !!!!

    Mohamed ELAzab wrote:
regarding that the number of execution is the main thing that affects the performance i said that already above " the application executed it 30 000" but you didn't read my answer correctly. I did not respond to that "answer" of yours as it was not part of your posting that I responded too. In your response, which I quoted, talked about non-sharable SQL retrieving 20 rows and after 3 years it retrieving a million rows. This has no bearing on whether the SQL is sharable or not.
I don't agree with you regarding that the design is not being done regarding considering the performance bottlenecks. So you decide on what the bottlenecks are up front, and then use these as database design considerations? I fail to see any logic or merit in such an approach.
i want to let you know that we in the telecoms environment have many problems in our databases because the people who designed those applications didn't take performance in consideration.I understand too well - and it is not that they did not take performance into consideration when designing the database, it is because the design is just plain wrong from the start.
You do not need to consider amount of memory available, number and speed of CPUs, bandwidth and speed of the I/O system, in order to design a database. These have no relevance at all during the design phase. Especially as the h/w that will run the design in production in a year's time can be drastically different from the h/w that will be used today.
No, instead you use a proper and correct design methodology and data modeling approach. Why? Because such a design by its very nature will make optimal use of h/w resources and will provide data integrity, scalability and performance.
Again i think design of the database application must take database performance bottlenecks in consideration like application which doesn't use bind variables if they took into consideration to avoid that it will help the DBA in the future but unfortunately most people doesn't do that. And as I said - using bind variables or not has absolutely nothing to do with the basic question asked in this thread: "+what are the requirements of database design+".
How does using/not using bind variables influence the design of a table? Determine whether an entity is in 3NF? What the unique identidiers are for an entity? These are the design considerations for a database.. not bind variables.
Yes, SQLs not using bind variables can cause performance problems. Not paying the electricity bill can cause a power outage for the database server. So what? These issues have no relevance to database design.

  • TOSHIBA software that check for newest drivers and installs them

Is there a software? I have Toshiba tempo, but it just pops a message saying that there is a new drivers, but there is no option to install them automatically as well as to check the current version?

As far as I know such software doesnt exist. Tempro is designed to inform notebook user but it is your decision to make update or not.
I must also say that I completely agree with Xardas. You dont need update if everything works properly. I use my Satellite P500 almost a year and half and still use original OS from Toshiba. What I install are Microsoft updates (important only) and antivir software update.

  • Differences between Arch linux and RHEL-based Distros?

    Hi there!
So, I am officially trying to make the permanent switch from Windows to Linux. I've used Linux in the past, from Ubuntu, to Fedora, to Mint, and I've always liked Arch the most. Nothing beats the feeling of an OS you had a hand in setting up.
I'm wondering though, what are the differences in Arch vs distros like Red Hat, Fedora, and CentOS? I recently picked up a book called, "The Linux Bible" which provides a course-like approach to learning the intricacies of Linux. I'm wondering if it would be easily possible to adapt the lessons from that to Arch, or to use Fedora or another RHEL-based distro like it suggests.
    Thanks

The biggest issue I find is with SE Linux. I don't know if this is default in RHEL itself but Fedora uses it. If I understood it properly, though, I doubt it would be such an issue!
EDIT: I think it would be best to learn one distro first, using documentation for that distro. So if you want to use the book, install something that matches the book as closely as possible. If you want to use Arch, use the wiki as your primary documentation. I say this because there is a big difference between figuring out the ways in which two distros differ when you understand the GNU/Linux basics and (I imagine) trying to do so when you are still learning those basics. I don't just mean ls, grep etc. - other systems use those - but the stuff which is common to any GNU/Linux distro. Obviously this applies even more if you also are learning stuff like ls, grep, cd etc. (which might be true if you're moving from Windows rather than, say, OS X or one of the BSDs).

  • Separate section for installation/activation/etc. issues

I'd suggest to add a separate section (subforum) for each (or most of) the software products, dealing exclusively with issues pertaining to installation/deinstallation/activation/deactivation/installing 64bit version on.../using product with ... graphics card/etc.etc...
For example, since the launch of Photoshop CS4, the main Photoshop forum section has been cluttered with installation/activation issues to a point, where other issues go unnoticed and people lose interest in the forum. During the last days, I've read at least 2 comments in the Photoshop section, that they have decided to stop using the forum for exactly this reason.
I'd have to look, but I can surely retrieve these comments, if need be ...

  • Looking for programmer for Arch AIF GTK frontend GUI

I am the English admin & web developer for the Maryan Linux project. Let me just say what it is so you don't have to go researching about it.
Maryan Linux is a Linux distribution, based on Arch, using E17 as its DE. It is designed to be extra user friendly, but fast, stable and bleeding edge using the Arch Linux repos with Pacman.
What I, the lead developer (Maty1206) and second lead developer (smartboyathome) need is a programmer, who is experienced or good enough to build a friendly front end GUI for Arch Linux's AIF installer. It's a community project, so their really isn't any pay. Doesn't matter what language the programmer uses, as long as it works for the task (No java though). So if anyone wants to do it, can and has the time, just post a comment here.
The main benefit is that it also benefits other projects that need a GTK installer and Arch distros that use XFCE, Gnome, any *box, E17, LXDE etc. would use a GTK installer for Arch. The installer will obviously be under GPL so everyone can use it.
    Cheers!

  • Awful Experience with Delivery and Installation of Appliances from BBY

I went to the Best But in College Park, MD on 02 March 2015 with the intention of buying an appliance suite (refrigerator, range, and dish washer). A sales associated assisted me promptly upon entering the store, and I let him know what I needed to purchase and that I would need delivery, installation, and haul away for all three items. He stated that the delivery, installation, and haul away was included with the price of all three items, and we scheduled my initial delivery date for 13 March 2015.
The evening before my delivery, 12 March 2015, I got a call from the Geek Squad giving me a three hour window they would be there to deliver and install my items. In going over the order with the representative I asked if the same crew dropping off the appliances would be installing the plumbing for the dishwasher. Contrary to what I was told in the store at the time of purchase, the representative on the phone notified me that a dishwasher installation was not sold to me and the following day the only thing the crew would be doing is dropping off the dishwasher. She then instructed me to call the store to see if there was any adjustments that could be made that would not change my delivery date the following day.
So, I call the store and explain what is going on to the representative in customer service. He instructs me that he cannot add the installation on to the order for the next day because the route has already been made and the warehouse told him its too late to change. So, instead he, in conjunction with his manager, said he can add the dishwasher install for a later date that I was available, but the delivery of the range and the refrigerator would remain for the following date. After about 45 minutes we work through the kinks and he lets me know he will call me back the following day to give me a solidified date and time that the dishwasher can be installed.
So, the following day comes and the time frame for my delivery and installation of the range and refrigerator comes and goes without hearing a word from Best But or the Geek Squad. So, I call customer service and the rep I'm speaking with lets me know that whatever the in-store rep did over the phone the following night put the entire order into reschedule and nothing would be delivered to me that day. Imagine my frustration because I've taken off from work to take possession of appliances that AREN'T GOING TO SHOW UP. Immediately, I hang up with customer service and go into the store where I originally purchased the appliances. I was told it did in fact get pushed into reschedule and my only option was to reschedule the delivery AGAIN. After working with both the rep and the General Manager in-store I was able to get the delivery rescheduled for 23 March 2015 with the dishwasher installation added to the order for free since it was an error caused by a Best Buy employee.
On 21 March 2015, I got the calls from the automated system giving me my three hour window the installers would be there on the 23rd of March to install my items. On 23 March 2015, the crew with the refrigerator and the range showed up first. They asked me to come to the truck upon arrival because there was some issue with the refrigerator and they wanted me to see it before they unloaded it and brought it up to my home. The refrigerator of course shows up badly dented on the door, so I refuse it because I haven't gone through all of this to take possession of a damaged product. The delivery man let me know that if I did take possession of it, they would offer me some discounts because it was damaged. I said no thanks and he called customer service for me to speak with a woman at the warehouse about the damaged product. The woman at the warehouse said she was going to check their inventory and call me back within a few moments to reschedule a new unit to be sent out. They install the range without an issue. Next, the dishwasher team shows up and that goes off without a hitch. Of course, I didn't hear back from anyone at the warehouse at all that evening to reschedule the delivery of a new refrigerator.
All in all, this has been a HORRIBLE experience with Best Buy. As a loyal Elite Status Rewards Zone customer and a former employee of the Best Buy in College Park, MD, I can say after this appliance experience, Best But has lost a lifelong customer. The level of customer service I received was sub-par and their attempts to correct an issue that started with their employee giving me improper information about installation being included in the price of all the appliances made the situation worse. I ended up returning the refrigerator because I refuse to wait any longer or go through anymore drama in order to take possession of something I paid for twenty days ago and can't receive because of Best Buy's inability to get their act together. I ended up purchasing a refrigerator from Sears immediately after cancelling my order for the one from Best Buy and it was delivered next day and damage free.

    Hello canbro34,
The purchase and delivery of new appliances should be exciting and fun and not result in the kinds of tribulations that you describe. Our representatives should ensure that you have everything you need for a successful delivery and installation and I was surprised to read that the did not. I apologize for your having to cope with this frustrating experience.
I was gratified to read that the store's general manager was able to work with you to help assuage some of the problems that were created. It was regrettable that the refrigerator arrived damaged, but I was happy to hear that the delivery and installation of the other appliances went smoothly.
Although I understand your reasons, I was dismayed to read that you elected to purchase your refrigerator from a competitor and that this experience may influence your future shopping destination. It is my hope that you will give Best Buy another chance one day soon.
Please know that I am sincerely grateful that you took the time to share your experience with us.

  • Is this a bug for 10.3.9 installation

    Hi everyone especially mac experts
This is my first visit to this forum. I have been using my Powerbook g4 12 inch for 3 - 4 years, never had any problem til now!!
My mac has problem all the sudden, got hacked or something, I dont know, I cannot even restart, it hung since apple logo appear, only way is insert install disc + press C with only one option it allowed me to do "erase and install" no backup no upgrade!!!!
Anyway, that is not my question, it just a whining, my question is when i tried to reinstall with my installation CD that came with my powerbook and/or panther CD with 3 blacks and 1 codeX, which I got it when I was a member of developer connect. The series of problem are as follow
    1. during installation of CD2, i got installation failure with error messages said some packages cannot install!!!
    2. after i ignore (1), by click "quit" which is only one option anyway, os started to ask me to fill in all information include setting user name and password for admin account. so i did. Then I start to do "software update", and it failed to update/install QuickTime 7.x.x. Then i tried to download only, unpackage and install myself, it has the same results
    3. From (2) i search solution on mac website by using winXP, and found that i have to remove some packages in /Library/../receipts/ and reinsert CD 2 again to reinstall, cool.. i will give it a shot. Unfortunately, it asked for admin password and i could not give a correct password, but i remember and have it written down on a paper. Then i check at Preference->account->admin and see it shows 7 digits or * instead of 9 digits. I wonder that someone might hacked into my computer and change it.
Therefore, I decide to reinstall again, this time, i spent more time by include erase disk with option "write zero to disk" and no network connection to make sure there is no trace from hacker! Unfortunately, I got the same problem from (1) to (3) without update software d/l. therefore, i believe (3)is a bug it is obvious from my observation, if i cannot solve (3) i will not be able to solve (1) and (2), and i will not have my mac back to work
Please give me advice, i already lost all my data and spent my weekend trying to fix these problems, which non can be fixed (yet)
    Thanks in advance

    Roam,
    Thanks again for your suggestion,
"Furthermore one should always Repair Permissions both before doing a Software Update and again afterwards."
I honestly dont know anything about this "Repair Permissions" from the name, i though it is a verification of authentication to repair OS or some kind of credential issue, and since i m admin user then there is no point to verify it, i should be allowed to do so. Again it is my first time to do this thing in 3 - 4 years of using panther, every time i update software i never ever do this! If this step is essential for every update and installation why dont apple put them as one of TODO step during the processes (as licensing agreement) instead of keep them as an option (just my thought) Anyway, I m glad u tell me about it, and i will give it a shot tonight.
"That may because you didn't have sufficient disk space. In fact running out of disk space can create all sorts of problems. Please tell me how disk space is available on your
    start up drive."
That what I thought coz i have only 5.x GB left in 60 GB HD. Thats why I claimed as whining and have to scarify the lost of data by reinstall panther in order to get my mac back to work
"So are you saying it is a bug or it is a hacker, I don't believe it is either"
Please see second update info about password, and i m not impose anyone to believe, thats why the topic is a questioning sentence "Is this a bug.."
"This Discussion site is not Applecare. The people here give their time voluntarily to those who are receptive to help."
Thats why i ask for "mac expert" not "apple authority/technician" and always appreciate any suggestion.
Anyway, that great to hear from you and i have learned new thing from your suggestion. I will let u know when i have tried it.

  • Simple question; Mac Server Setup for Mail, iCal and Address Book Services.

    Hi Guys;
I'm new to the Mac Server world and need a few questions answered.
I have purchased a new Mac mini Server for hosting File, Web, Mail, iCal and Address Book Services.
I’m comfortable setting up File and Web Services however I’m a bit uneasy setting up Mail, iCal and Address Book services to be access locally and remotely(via the internet).
    My current setup is;
Internet connection (Dynamic IP) -> Router -> Mac mini Server.
I have purchased a domain name (Thornton-net.com) from DynDns.com + a custom DNS service as I can setup my router to update my domain’s IP address automatically.
I can access File and Web Services remotely (thortnon-net.com) perfectly without any issues via the Port Forwarding feature of the Router.
If I setup Mail, iCal and Address Book Services -> will Mail, iCal and Address Book clients be able to access these services hosted by the server via Thornton-net.com?
    Message was edited by: Allan.Thornton

    Welcome to the forums.
For mail services (and specifically for your outbound mail to be accepted by other mail servers) your mail server needs to have a static IP address and matching forward and reverse and MX records, or a tunnel to a static IP (with matching DNS), or you need another mail server where you have an authorized relay. Without that, your mail will be considered a spam engine, and dropped.
Additionally, your particular tier of service with your ISP (with a static IP) will generally allow server-oriented access and server-oriented network traffic, where a residential or other tier of service (with a dynamic IP addresses) can be firewalled.
The ISP controls the "high ground" of the network connections here, so you pretty much get to play by their rules and requirements. If they don't offer static IP, then (presuming their T&Cs permit it) you get to tunnel (via IPv6, for instance) to a tunnel broker, and receive your network traffic via that (and with matching DNS) point of presence. That could well be a tunnel for your mail at whichever your DNS provider is here, because you'll have issues with your dynamic address. (You get to sort out if they offer that.)
Far and away the easiest approach (if you want to host this stuff yourself) is to work with the ISP. They're inherently involved in your network, and they and they alone have full control over your reverse DNS configuration.

  • Why not? kdemod + arch kde, same for arch live +chakra

Sorry for bug you people, but now that the waters are calm, i wanna ask a simple cuestion, why 2 proyects for the same task, arch kde and kdemod, same for arch live and chakra.
as user of both i think if all join the efforts, arch could be even better and erase the problems  spesific for kde  or kdemod, i now... linux is choice, and diferent aproachs(now are very close i think). but, ARCH Linux is one of the finnest distros and unified it, could make ready for be a popular wide users target distro.
linux is choice, but community is common efforts for a greater resoults.

Agree! Altho arch should have used kdemod as its kde in the first place

  • Upcoming issues for secure boot and arch installs

I came across this rather worrying article indicating that when Microsoft starts approving hardware for Window 10 machines they may not allow secure boot to be turned off, and thereby make it very difficult for users to install arch on such a machine unless it can be booted using secure boot:
    http://arstechnica.com/information-tech … a-reality/
I suppose at some point there will need to be a method of getting the appropriate certificates for arch to allow booting on machines using secure boot.

I've heard the systemd guys are working on integrating secure boot with systemd and gummiboot. So you might be able to sign everything yourself and secureboot your GNU/Linux/Systemd machine.
But currently I don't know anything about it and don't care about it. Like trilby said, if I'm not able to use a specific hardware I will not use it.
Sure I won't buy hardware that I can't install Arch on - but what is a potential problem is if OEMs are forced into only selling locked hardware if they wish to sell it with Windows on it in the future - that would give MS a monopoly position - and for laptops it is not so easy to find hardware that is free of MS apart from a limited range of laptops that have Ubuntu installed when supplied (and of course IOS and chromeos based machines). For desktops it is not too difficult to buy components or barebones systems that you can customise and install whatever you like on - but laptops don't generally fall into that option range.  I do have to keep Windows for some tasks that it is close to impossible to do without Windows (like satnav updates for example) though it principle a VM could be used with Windows on it. It is a shame that for this kind of task there isn't a linux alternative that avoids Windows altogether! It would be nice to find barebones laptops that you can install any OS of choice on with none on the machine at the time of purchase.
I know this argument was discussed at length before Secure Boot appeared in the machines that are on the market now - and at the time I thought that the basic principle of not having one O/S manufacturer monopolising the market and excluding other O/Ses had been established and expected to continue along this path - but the news item indicates that a significant departure from that policy may now take place over the next year or two. Giving users the option to disable Secure Boot has no impact on the security of the Windows O/S on a particular machine unless the user actively disables it but that should remain the user's choice. The only reason to lock down the BIOS in this way is to attempt to close off competition to Windows. In a true free market there should be hardware that is not so locked - or at least have as much choice of hardware that is not incumbent on control from MS. There are worries that the BIOS is vulnerable to firmware hacking but that could in principle happen even if the Secure Boot option is designed to have no user control to turn it off.  Maybe devices that will re-flash the BIOS with one that does allow Secure Boot will be developed - I seem to remember that some machines are "operated on" during delivery to customers in that kind of way to install firmware components that are not in place at manufacture - so that kind of technology already exists.
It will no doubt be interesting to see how this plays out over the next couple of years.
Edit:  I guess if it comes to the crunch that people will start to play with the information such as at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Un … ecure_Boot
I've tried using VB as a PXE client for Arch, and VB keeps blowing up.  It's better if you just run it straight.
