Forum Suggestion - FAQ's

The same subjects keep coming up time and time again. Would it not be of help to such users and the people answering their questions if we could group some of the most popular questions?
e.g. Printing Problems
Black Screen
Primary problems
Managed vs. Referenced
Vaults
and there are more.
This would help reduce some of the clutter and focus on some of the more positive or adavanced aspects that people want to discuss.
Perhaps too a 'What's New' section could focus on new features and techniques.

The problem with those types of static topics/pages is they soon become old and out-of-date themselves, then you have folks relying on incorrect data for answers instead of asking the question and getting current info.
I once thought they were a good idea but technology seems to move too fast, so they are seldom of any real value.

The more information you supply about your situation, the better equipped other community members will be to answer. Consider including the following in your question:
    Adobe product and version number
    Operating system and version number
The full text of any error message(s)
What you were doing when the problem occurred
    Screenshots of the problem
Computer hardware, such as CPU; GPU; amount of RAM; etc.

  • Some emails keep being reloaded, even from 2+years ago. Forum-suggested fixes didn't work.

Tbird regularly loads emails 2, 3, even 4 or more times from my Hotmail account. (Some, not all - seems random.) Sometimes, I've read them but not deleted them, but most times, I've already deleted them from Tbird (though I still want them in Hotmail). I know it's not because I'm being sent the message more than once, because some are automatic, news updates, and others are suddenly showing up from weeks ago. Other forum suggestions have not worked - I've deleted hidden trash files, removed everything from inbox to local folders, deleted trash and junk, compacted all folders (had already been doing this periodically), etc., and NOTHING CHANGES. I started deleting a bunch of old emails from my inbox (had accumulated too many, I know), and now it wants to download 1900 messages every time I try to get mail - even emails from 2012! I can't use Tbird at all now. One forum suggested that I change from POP3 to IMAP, but I want to keep emails in folders on my PC, because I live in Uganda and can't always get online, but need info from the msgs. I don't want to lose emails in the online site either, so I don't want to delete them from there. I've never had this prob before, and I've used Tbird for YEARS. Ready to drop it and try another client. HELP!

It sounds like your Popstate.dat file has got corrupted.
It keeps a record of what has been downloaded so that it does not redownload emails. Clearly, something has wrong.
You would need to delete the 'popstate.dat file and then Thunderbird will create a new one. The downside is that it will download everything that is on your server Inbox again, but just once.
If you really need to store email on the webmail account, I would do the following in the order shown to avoid downloading all those emails.
'''1. Logon to webmail using a browser.'''
Pop mail accounts can only get access to the server Inbox, so move all your older emails - eg: everything older than eg: a month into other folders in the webmail account.
This will prevent a complete redownload of all those emails.
''' 2. make hidden files and folders visible on your computer'''
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders
The AppData folder is folder is a hidden folder; to show hidden folders, open a Windows Explorer window and choose "Organize → Folder and Search Options → Folder Options → View (tab) → Show hidden files and folders".
    '''3. Locate popstate.dat file '''
    In Thunderbird:
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information
    * Click on 'Show Folder'
A new window opens showing your Profile folder.
    * '''Close Thunderbird now - this is important'''
    * Click on 'Mail' folder
    * click on mail account name
    * locate and delete this file: '''popstate.dat'''
    Restart Thunderbird.
It will download anything left in the webmail server Inbox.
You can easily remove the duplicate emails.

  • Forum Suggestion: 'Sticky' or 'Pinned' Topics / FAQ

    Hey Mods,
It would be great if each forum had certain topics that answer certain questions always at the top of the list.  Some forum calls these the "Stickies" or "Pinned topics", or we could just use a FAQ topic that links to common questions we're seeing.
For example, in the camera forum, we've already had the same question/situation come up in two separate threads:
    http://forums.usa.canon.com/t5/Camera/I-am-trying-to-take-video-with-my-Canon-EOS-60D/m-p/755
    http://forums.usa.canon.com/t5/Camera/My-T2i-stops-filming-after-a-minute-or-less/m-p/877
The solution is that card speeds is the culprit, and 'CanonEOS600D' wrote a great response to both threads that maybe we can save and share for future instances.
    Thanks!

  • Forum etiquette FAQ + Moderator Enforcement

    jochemd wrote:
Since despite the plethora of messages nobody is even attempting to provide any arguments or suggestions towards improving the FAQ, this thread is being locked. Since the only currently provided reason for changing the FAQ is rather pointless in light of the overal rules, I am not updating the FAQ.
The problem with this is that you're assuming that nobody new is going to come along with a question or addition that will put the thread back on topic--it happens all the time.  So if someone comes along, sees the original post, and wants to comment--now they have to create a new thread like this. Why waste the time locking the thread?

Actually I strongly agree with this rule (change?)*.
*(It was there last time I looked and it seems to me that it's a typical forum rule.)
I've been the witness and target of personal attacks here for awhile now, so yes it does need to stop, and moderators should be removing this type of offensive comment.  But mods need to have the sense to detect good-natured joking around vs. an actual personal attack.
Really though, inappropriate behavior like this shouldn't be that difficult to most people with some common sense.
    It's not that hard:
    Questioning someone's intelligence? Unacceptable
    Questioning someone's educational background? Unacceptable
Correcting someone's spelling, politely without implying that they're an idiot (a personal attack)? OK
Correcting someone's grammar, politely without implying that they're an idiot (a personal attack)? OK
Correcting someone's spelling or grammar in a rude, inappropriate, or condescending manner? Unacceptable
Criticizing person B for politely correcting (editing) person A's grammar or spelling? Unacceptable - according to the Adobe rule specified above
It doesn't say you can't correct someone's spelling or grammar, it seems to say not to attack people for (politely, obviously) correcting another's mistake.  I think.    It could use a little clarification, the "..." at the end hints that it's incomplete--but the rule itself is needed IMO.

I have seen plenty of evidence that people are more then capable of creating threads With the diversity of people providing off topic input a lock was the best I could do. What I really wanted to do was put a chill-lock on the thread: a lock, some message and a counter counting down for 6 hours until the thread is re-opened. But this software isn't really abundant in moderation features.
And there lies the problem. What to one may be a good-natured joke (because some spelling / grammar errors are funny), to somebody else is a personal attack (becuase they studied very hard and long to learn a foreign language). Add to that that moderators need to make a judgement call on whether the comment will escalate or not, and a moderator has a hard decision to make. It is why I typically refrain from spelling corrections completely, except where pertinent to the problem (for example somebody writing IF (...) THAN ... ELSE ... ENDIF; in FormCalc).
To 1st paragraph (thanks Jive for making it sooo easy to break up quotes for a response):
It's not a temp lock, but there's another simple alternative that I've seen used many times in dozens of other web forums: post a warning that the thread may be locked if it continues to trail off into pointlessness.*  If people really want the thread to stay open, they'll get back on topic.
*(To me this means posting random cat pictures, general goofing off, or other 'lounge' type activities. This doesn't include a topic change to an off topic but still productive conversation, as long as the thread creator is okay with it. IMO--leave it up to the original poster to self-police highjack conversations. The point of the forum is to be of service the user/customer, not to make sure they obey all the rules 100% of the time.)
To 2nd paragraph: I understand there's exceptions and that it's a subjective thing, but 99% of the time it's usually pretty obvious whether something is inappropriate.  I guess to some degree you have to understand the mood and atmosphere of the forum's users, which can vary, but IMO as a rule it's best to default to the minimum possible moderation and censorship.
In this forum--there is goofing off.  Too much at times.   But it's going to happen, and after awhile it'll probably seem like too much work to be worth it.  I can understand not having 5 threads on the first page dedicated to completely off topic sea kitten posts or "this place is jived up" complaints (assuming there isn't some specific problem being reported), but I hope this is not going to turn into a police state forum.  Especially considering that honestly, there doesn't seem to be many new "forum comments" left to make, all there really remains is our frustration and a need to make sure Adobe doesn't start to think we've gotten used to this crap forum software.
I don't know for sure if you (jochem) agree with all this (been inactive the last few days or week) and I'm not targeting this at anyone so... I'm just sayin'.
Geez, too verbose. Basically-- a lazy (but not completely inactive) mod is best!

  • TS3899 I upgraded my iphone 4 to ios 6 and now I can't get my work e-mail anymore.  I've tried deleting the account and re-adding, per other forum suggestions, and still no luck.  Also, there is no longer an "Advanced" section to enter information.

Help!  I upgraded my iphone 4 to ios 6 and now one of my two emai accounts - my work account - no longer receives/sends emails.  I checked my e-mail settings and they were correct.  I then deleted the account and tried to re-add it, per discussions in other forums, and it won't verify the account.  In addi tion, there was previously an Advanced section in the e-mail account setting, and now there isn't - don't know if that is part of the probem and the phone needs additional information that it's not asking for anymore . . . I'm beyond frustated.  Many hours of lost productivity.  Any suggestions?  Can I got back to the previous version?  I was thinking of buying new phone in next few months, but if this is resolved I'm leaving Apple.

I do backup with iCloud.  I can't wait until the new iMac is available so that I can once again have my files in more than 1 location without needing to rely solely on the cloud.
I also rely on iTunes and my MacBook and Time Machine as well as backing up to iCloud. I know many users know have gone totally PC free, but I chose to use iCloud merely as my third backup.
I assume that the restore would result in my ability to open Pages and Numbers and fix the problem with deleting apps, but this would also mean that if my Numbers documents still exist solely within the app and are just not on iCloud for some reason that they would be gone forever.  Is that right?
In a word, yes. In a little more detail.... When you restore from an iCloud backup, you must erase the device and start all over again. There is no other way to access the backup in iCloud without erasing the device. Consequently, you are starting all over again. Therefore, it would also be my assumption that Pages and Numbers will work again and that the deleting apps issues would be fixed as well.
If the documents are not in the backup, and you do not have a backup elsewhere, the documents could be gone forever.

  • HT2963 Can't set JPGs to open in Photoshop not Preview- forum suggested this is Permissions issue

I've repeatedly used "Open with" > "Other" > "Adobe Photoshop CS4" > "Always Open With" and it works only with that particular JPG. In a Photoshop forum, someone suggested this is a Permissions issue. Is it? If so, how do I fix it? (I have no UNIX-type experience. This is Mavericks OS X 10.9.2.) Thanks to anyone who can help!

Control (right) - click on the file and select Get Info from the contextual menu:
In the Info window select Photoshop as the app to open it with and click on the Change All button.

  • Flash Forum Suggestion

    On the
Adobe.com and Forums Feedback forum I posted a suggestion
which applies to this forum. It concerns the two languages,
Actionscript 2.0 and 3.0, we are all so familiar with. ;)
Well maybe it is personal, but I find it increasingly
difficult to find myself the correct answers searching these
forums, as at present only few users define which version of
Actionscript they program in. While most people are now still using
2.0, more people will start using 3.0 and with the syntax of 3.0
being pretty different from 2.0, this will present a problem, I
    think.
So I suggested that topic creaters should have to choose
whether their question applies to AS1.0&2.0, or AS3.0. That
would make browsing the boards for relevant information a whole lot
    easier.
Another option would be if people would adopt some kind of
[ASx.0] prefix, to manually insert before their topic subject, but
that would probably be too much asked.
Oh well. Just my two cents. :P

    Hi,
I'm starting my own forums for ActionScript 2.0/3.0. I
    started them in
order to offer assistance for my Flash API but I think it
    would also be
a good place to offer assistance to anyone needing general
    Flash help.
The forums are brand spanking new and I'll make sure everyone
    gets a
solid reply one way or another. Drop by!

  • Forum suggestion

    Hi,
Small suggestion but I feel its an important one,
There needs to be an apps suggestions thread, broken downn into sub catagories where customers can go and post suggestions for new apps and delvelopers can go and get new ideas for creating them.
Some customers have great ideas but arn`t capable of creating them and some delvelopers are capable of creating apps, but need fresh ideas to inspire them.
Also just simply making a comment on one of the deleopers apps or webpage does not mean that they are the ones capable or even intrested in creating that paticular app, where another delveoper might take imtrest in the idea and be more capabel of creating it.
I for one have a few ideas for apps but am unsure which delevloper to talk to or where to post it so other delvelopers can see it.
I think if there was a forum for Iphone and Ipod users to communicate better with delevopers there would be a an increase in more usefull apps making the Iphone and Ipod even more usefull than it already is.
    Just a suggestion,
    soundguy99

    Thanks for the reply,
However your suggested links are precisly the reason for my post.
The comments section under the various paticular apps only adress that app and/or delevloper, and in my opinion is there to adress issues with that paticular app including such things as what they liked what they didn`t like, issues about variouus version on that paticular app. It does not cover such things as new app ideas nor does it communicate those ideas with other developers.
Secondly on the topic of the developers own webpage, yes understand that you can contect the delevloper through their own website, however there again thats on;y that paticular developer. So what am I suppose to do if I have idea for an app post the isame idea on all the delevopers webpages, I don`t think that a practical idea do you?
3rd As far as your deleveopers forums, yess I realize they are there however they are more geared to the developers themselves and the specfic technical issues relating to the devopoment process, and seems intimidating to those users of those apps to simply suggest any ideas for new ones.
Lastley on 3rd party websites, yes there are a wide range of forums out there for a host of things, but why should app users have to go outside of the apple site to post new app ideas for an apple product. The forums are here, the developers are here, and the app users are here, To me at least it doesen`t make sense why would send your customers to 3rd party forums to suggest new ways to improve an apple product such as apps. That to me sounds like apple is just passing the buck, and cares less about the actual app users. Were not talking about creating a new wepage or anything, just adding a new section to the forums where app users and developers and come and freely talk about apps.
Remeber the useres are here, the developers are here and last time I looked this the apple website, I am only suggestion anothrer section of the forums for developers and users to discusss apps both new ideas and improving old.
I don`t know if I off base for asking this but I believe this is a good idea, and there is anyone out there who aggrees with me please don`t hesitate in replying. If we don

  • Still will not run on Vista using Forum suggestions

I tried the suggestions posted in the support forum but the NI design suite 10 still not running in my computer with Microsoft Vista OS. I remove and re-install the software by following NI engineers removal process sent via email and still not  working. This is the error shown in the display -" NI Design Suite 10.0 has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working properly. Window will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."- Junt

    Hi Junt:
I'm just checking to see if you were able to solve your problem? If you are still experiencing difficulty, some additional information would be helpful.
What version of Windows Vista are you running (eg. Home Basic)?
What language is your operating system?
    What is your user name?
Does the error occur during startup, or sometime afterward?
If the error occurs during startup, do you get any other errors. For example, any errors about loading plugins? Can you see on the splash screen if Multisim has stopped after while loading a particular plugin?

No, there's not. It has been suggested, however, you can utilize the forum search utility.

  • IWeb forum suggestion

I am glad to see that the iWeb forum has been split into two sections for the new iWeb '08 and the "old" iWeb, but would like to suggest that the older version be so labeled. Right now it is just called "iWeb" but really it should be labeled "iWeb '06" or "iWeb 1.x.x" or something... Just a suggestion!
Also it might be good to consider doing something with the iWeb forum that exists under the .Mac heading. It is confusing having iWeb located in two different places. The iLife/iWeb forum gets a bulk of the traffic anyway.

I am chiming in here because I am not sure how else to ask someone for help. I have downloaded a fresh Apple update with 4 updates. They downloaded and installed okay but during the autorestart my mac has been stuck in the restart white screen for about 2 hours now. This is with the grey apple and the spinning circle. Should I force shut down and restart or let it ride out longer? Is this normal?

  • Forum etiquette FAQ needs edit/clarification of (a recent? addition)

The Forum etiquette and best practices page contains something I had not noticed before.  It may have been added recently.
    Don't:
Personally attack people, their edits (including spelling or grammar)…
    Their "spelling"?
How are you going to be helpful to people by neglecting to point out to posters that there are no are such words in the English language as "convertor", "seperate" or "seperations" and that's why they don't find the information they need on the Adobe DNG Converter or separations in the Help files or Google?

There is a difference between helping people by pointing out errors in spelling if it is relevant to their query and attacking someone by pointing out they don't know how to spell or use proper grammar.
Example: I have searched for information on coler management. I can find no information at all on coler.
Here telling the person that they are misspelling color would be helpful.
Example: I is having a problem with Color Management.
It is not  helpful or appropriate to tell the person they should write I am rather than I is.
The second type of critique happens. It reminds me of the story about the English teacher that corrects the grammar of a student that writes her a love letter and hands it back to the student---neither helpful nor appropriate.
