Foxtel and Cable Broadband

I've switch from ADSL2+ from TPG (where I was getting maximum downloads of 1.5MBPS) to Cable with Telstra.  I was attracted by the lure of "30MBPS" speeds.The sales agent on the phone assured me I would get 30MBPS (anything over 20 would have been fine actually) and said that TPG shape their ADSL which is why my speed was so slow previously.  "Telstra give you the full speed". Since getting cable installed I have speeds of 1 - 2.2MBPS as a maximum.  Whilst I run a speedtest I get 30MBPS (a simple ping), however downloading a file from any reputable (Apple etc) and not so reputable website is just as slow as I had before. I've had 2 technicians out that confirm all settings, cabling etc are fine and the Telstra call centre and they tell me the problem lies with the website I am downloading from.  Whilst that may be a consideration to have such a gap in speed is incredible especially considering my ADSL2+ was similar. I don't feel like I'm getting value for money as now I'm paying $20 more per month and on a limited 200G plan (TPG was unlimited). Anyone else had the same issues with Cable? Is there a solution?

It doesn't always...
the actual download speeds are dependant on many factors, for some servers have a cap on the speed you can download them from (either purposely put in place, limited technology or bandwidth sharing when large number of users are online)...
so as an example, you download a file from Apple as you mentioned,
If their server has a cap at say 2 megabytes per second, once you have a connection speed over 16Mbps (roughly) it isn't going to help much since the server you are downloading from isn't capable of higher or is limited to only that speed...
The faster the connection, the faster in theory you can download, however you can only obtain it as fast as the server is providing it... so the 100/2Mbps speedboost, will again increase your speed, NBN will provide about the same speed, but neither would make a huge difference if you are trying to get files from a server which is limited...
When actually testing download speeds it is very hard because there are so many things which come into play, the path that is taken, the servers in the middle, the main server you are trying to reach...
What the speedtest does is grabs a file from a local server, which means the information has less distance, less middle men and as such is faster...

    is there alot of differences between them ?
    can somebody give me standard isp topolofy for cable mode system ?

    My way of looking at it is that i neeed nothing else

  • Cable Broadband for subdivision and Commercial Quote

    Hi Telstra, I recently bought a subdivided home and currently waiting for settlement. So as a forward thinking professional, i took the initiative to make sure that cable broadband would be available for my property ahead of time so thought i would enjoy cable broadband as soon as i moved in. I checked that both properties either side of me can receive cable broadband and indeed they both do on the telstra broadband checker tool. Infact the entire street and the connecting street both receive cable broadband. From what I can tell it is provided from the overhead poles. Understanding that subdivisions are not updated on the telstra database I contacted a Telstra sales rep to get the ball rolling and they did a 'database check' which said i could get ADSL, maybe on ADSL2+ and not available for cable. I then went to the Telstra store who did the samething except this time visually showed me the database check, I asked them if it was possible to send a technician out to see if it was possible to connect to the cable service and how much it would cost. Instead I was told that trenches would have to be dug and that I would have to hire my own contractor to do it. I told them no trenches needed digging as as the subdivision is literally 3-5m from the poles and that it was facing the street not behind the main house. Attached below is a pictorial of what my situation is.So my property is actually a subdivision of 2A Bravo st, but since its facing Delta st its designated as 35B Delta st. The poles on Delta st currently supply the property with the phoneline and power as well.
    After some more research, i discovered the commercial quote method on the crowdsupport service. I then requested a commercial quote done through the 24x7 live chat in which they happily did for me and said it would take 14 days. 16 days later i followed up and the chat rep i spoke to could not find any record of the commercial quote and then suggested i speak the to Moving Home Team instead.
    Before I try the Moving Home Team, i private messaged a moderator whose yet to respond. So I ask anyone from Telstra or the crowdsupport if they can help with me with my situation please! I really want Telstra Cable as ADSL1 is not acceptable especially since the exchange is in the next suburb where my max speed would only be 4mb/s. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    I would try calling the connections team, 132200 and say "connection". Ask them for the reference number for the call (will be INT 1-4x) Ask them for the reference number for the Commerical Quote Webform (I believe that they might have an SR 1-4x number, but it has been a while since I have seen one) Ask them to send you a Get Back In Touch link by email/SMS, and if you haven't heard back, use that link to get back to them specifically, that way you should be able to get someone who should be able to help. It is disappointing that the LiveChat person hasn't submitted it or at least noted the reference but normally it is within a few weeks they get back. (10-15 business days)  The link they send will also have their name and employee number so you can also say who you spoke to. If after that you don't hear back, i would personally just raise a complaint, but they normally are pretty good at getting back to you.

  • Video Chat:  Cable Broadband vs. DSL

    I have had about five or six incidences of not being able to video chat with someone who is using cable broadband, vs. me being on DSL - I am able to video chat with other users who use DSL with no problems.
    Does anyone know anything about this or know of any kind of fix? Thanks for your time!
    Intel 17" iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi kwfryati,
    I have not spotted that problems are that specific.
    More likely is that they are using ISPs that offer a VoIP service (Internet/IP phones) and are blocking port 5060 expecting people to pay more for the service.
    Some ISPs also NAT the connection/Service to the end user at the ISP level and this can be an issue if you are using a NAT based method of opening the ports such as Port Forwarding - or they have a device at their end also doing NAT.
    Use UPnP where you can in the connection devices.

  • Can't get router working after switching from DSL to Cable broadband???

    I have a WRT54G v.5
    I just switched from dsl service to cable broadband. I can't get my router to work. I hooked it back up just as the dsl modem used to be. there is an ethernet cable that goes from the cable modem to the router. then an eithernet cable that goes from the router to the computer. this does not work. If I just take the router out of the loop and run an eithernet cable straight from the cable modem to the computer it works fine. so the cable internet service is working fine up to the modem. The router is the problem. I have restarted both the computer and the router. so that rules that out. can you help me?

    Open the setup page of the router by launching an Internet Explorer Browser and type the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field empty and provide password as admin and click on ok.On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be on ""Obtain IP Automatically - DHCP “. Click on the Save Settings button.Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone"".- Click on enable.Click Clone & click save settings
    Check WAN Ip on Status page of router .... If getting Valid Ip .... try going online...If not ... power cycle for 4-5 minutes & then, try going online.

  • Restricted upload speed Bigpond Cable Broadband Brisbane

    Hi, I checked the Telstra Service Status page for my suburb with nothing to explain the problems I am having today. My applications are crashing and disconnecting and generally behaving quite slowly. I have tried restarting the router, wifi gateway and the computers. When I go to speedtest.net or speedof.me, they show that I have great download speed (25-30 Mbps) but almost no upload speed. Sometimes the upload test fails, sometimes it shows about 0.1 Mbps. Sometimes the test shows 1 Mbps which I think should be normal for the Cable broadband service. But the results are erratic and the internet is hard to use in general. Is there actually an outage in my area? MrKimAGroves

  • Basic home network setup troubles: Airport, ethernet, and cable modem

    Hi,
    Having only just subscribed to a cable broadband service we're experiencing some troubles setting up a mixed-mode home network and I'm wondering whether we've got some of the very basics messed-up.
    What we have is:
    1. Recent version (white) ibook, with airport, running 10.4.7;
    2. Old G4 PowerPC (450MHz I think) running 10.4.7 ... airport card available;
    3. Old powerbook (?Lombard) running 10.2.8 ... no airport;
    4. A PC running Windows XP (not that important to have this in the network though) with no wireless;
    5. A 3com SuperStack 1100 switch;
    6. A cable modem;
    7. A Linksys BEFSX41 Etherfast Cable/DSL Router ... 4 ethernet switch ports;
    8. An airport express base station;
    9. An HP laser printer connected into the ethernet LAN.
    We'd like to keep both our wireless and ethernet networks running with all computers able to access one another, print to the laser printer, and access the broadband (fixed IP address) account. We're not (yet) conderned with hosting websites from our home computers.
    I'm unsure of how we should configure this system. Do I connect the airport base station to the switch (which is what we presently have) or into the router? Do I connect each of the hardwired PCs (and the printer) into the switch
    and then the switch to the router via single conenction?
    If we use DHCP to access the router have I got the potential for the router and the airport base station to interfere with one another?
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've pulled a few TCP/IP setup-for-idiots books from our local library but this specific situation doesn't seem to be well covered.
    Cheers
    Dougal

    You probably have a few options here that will work. Considering the number of wired devices, I would suggest the following:
    Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > [Internet port] BEFSX41 [LAN_1] > (Ethernet cable) > SuperStack switch > (Ethernet cable) > [Ethernet port] AirPort Express Base Station (AX) > (wireless) > wireless clients, AND
    SuperStack switch > (Ethernet cable) > wired clients
    Then setup the AX as a bridge, as follows:
    To set up the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a bridge, using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, make these settings:
    Network tab
    - Distribute IP addresses (unchecked)
    - Apply the new setting.
    - Wait at least 5 minutes.

  • Iphone 6 compatibility with belkin car charges and cables

    Hey
    upon reading stories of certain car charges not working with the iphone 6 i want to find out if either of these 2 car charges and cables from belkin will charge my iphone 6.
    In theory the 12v 2.4amp charger should charge my phone up faster than the rest however the iphone 6 is not listed in compatible devices, strangely neither is it listed on the 10w 2.1amp version of this product.
    Am i missing some sort of trick here? the only thing i can think of is that the iphone 6 has a list of compatible devices or (certified) and will not allow connection with either of these belkin devices.
    here is the 12v 2.4 charger http://www.belkin.com/uk/F8J121-Belkin/p/P-F8J121/
    Here is the 10w 2.1amp charger http://www.belkin.com/uk/F8J078/p/P-F8J078/
    What exactly is the problem with using either of these? isnt it the same lightening connection as the iphone 5?

    Belkin probably just hasn't updated the page yet. Give them a call or contact their customer support. Note that the maximum current an iPhone will draw from a USB adapter is 1 amp (5 watts) whether the adapter can supply 1 amp, 2 amps, or 100 amps. So it won't charge any faster than a 1 amp adapter. An iPad can use up to 2.1 amps.

    Hi guys.Got a problem with my iPhone 5. I bought it in a shop 4 month ago. After I got a visitor with iOS 7 on his phone he would like to charge his phone with my Laptop and cable.But when he plugged it in it showed a message wich says: " This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this phone".
    How is this possible? I then phoned the shop and told them my problem. When I gave them the details I also found out that the imei No. in the iPhone is the same as on the original box. But the the Serial numbers are different. I already try the support centre but I’m over the 90 days.And there is no Apple Store in Namibia. I hope someone can help me here. Thanks, Ralfar

    You are right, but how could i send it to Apple? when the phone company first replaced my iphone they had in stock alots of iphones and they just sent mine back to Apple and gave me a new one, so all i did is to give them my phone, but now how could i sent it to Apple? and i cant send it by myself, and the store wont do that, its a lost for them.. so sending it to Apple wasnt an option from the begining.
    and for the record, i dont think the store where i bought it is an authorized shop.. its just a store who boughts phone's from Apple in a low price and sells it in much more money..

  • HT1476 After update to either iOS 7.0.3 or 7.0.4, my iPhone 4S won't charge. I'm using charger and cable that came with the phone. Nothing else changed.

    I'm using charger and cable that came with the phone. Nothing else changed.
    I think it was the update the iOS 7.0.4 that I did last night. I woke up this morning with my battery almost drained and the charging function going off and on every few seconds, like it would start charging then disconnect, then reconnect repeatedly.
    I've tried restarting the phone and hard restarting the phone several times, but I'm getting really low on battery by now (under 20%).
    I've tried cleaning the connector with a little isopropyl alcohol, and blowing it out with compressed air. Though I can't be 100% certain, it's very unlikely my connector died exactly at the same time I was updating my phone. Especially since it appears I'm not the only one with this problem.
    And now, after the last hard reset, my phone doesn't even recognize the charger at all, or being connected with the USB cable to my MacBook Pro.
    I turned off my phone so when I go to the Apple Store it will power up one last time, but besides that I'm out of ideas.

    Just back from Genius Bar and two other people at my table had the same problem. Their 4Ss aren't charging either. One of them had a fried board according to the tech. At least my HW checked out OK. It just won't charge.
    The tech tried to tell me that it was because my connector was corroded, which I told him was kind of a weak argument since evidence points to that the update has something to do with it.
    They're seeing a lot of these and it looks like they already have a script.
    Luckily I had enough juice left to recycle it for like $180, so I picked up a 5S with a new 2 year.
    It looked to me like this is going to blow up pretty big. Like class action lawsuit big.
    If you have an iPhone 4 or 4S, and you haven't updated it to iOS 7, don't for now. See if a patch comes out that doesn't brick your phone. Or get an induction charger maybe? Don't just update and expect absolutely no problems because too many people are having problems right now.

  • I have connected the adapter and cable from imac to GVA HD tv but nothing seems to be happening.

    I have connected the adapter and cable from imac to GVA HD tv but nothing seems to be happening. Any suggestions?

    Was that message showing a s dialog when selecting the tv connection as a sound output device?  I ask because I don't know the exact context of that message and never heard of it before.
    It may be helpful to take a screen shot of both that message and also the list of the sound output devices while the tv is connected.
    You never specified your model (year) of your imac so I don't know its limitations.  Maybe some version doesn't support sound through the mini-displayport (hard to believe any model wouldn't with mini-displayport).  But if that is the case you may have to resort to analog stereo from you stereo line out output jack to your tv.
    One final thing.  The mini-displayport adapter you have may not support audio.  That was a possibility a few years ago.  That is why most places that sells these things also explicity specify whether the adapter supports audio.  For example, monoprice's adapter:
    Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt® to HDMI® Adapter w/ Audio Support
    or even the Moshi adapter sold through the apple store.
    Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support
    Note both these adapters explictily say they have audio support.
