FPO's in InDesign

When I place a FPO in CS2 & CS3 ver. 5.0.3, make postscript file, then distill to a pdf, the FPO becomes a lo-res 72x72 dpi image instead of it containing OPI information for it to swop out with the hi-res.
It worked correctly in versions 5.0.0 & 5.0.2. What was changed or forgotten about with the upgrade to 5.0.3?

Try checking all three boxes in the OPI comments tab. No idea WTF Adobe changed this but thats how I got FPO's to work again. PDF FPO's still don't work in CS3 tho and I wish Adobe would fix that! they work fine in CS2.

  • Indesign CS5.5 Relink Script needs help

Hi, I'm trying to relink images in an InDesign CS5.5 file to a different server using a script. This is what I have so far, but when I run the script I get errors and can't relink because "Either the file does not exist, you do not have permission, or the file may be in use by another application". Does anyone know how to make this script work? I'm fairly new to scripting.
Here is the script I have:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS5.5"
              tell document 1
                        set linkList to links
set errInfo to "" -- We'll display error if we can't relink an item
                        repeat with x in linkList
if (x's status) is not normal then -- I usually check for any link that has an error
-- This should only return an AppleScript path with ":" separators
set linkPath to (x's file path) as string
if "Volumes/Calendars_2013 FPO" is in linkPath then
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to "Volumes/Calendars_2013 FPO"
set linkPath to (linkPath's text items) -- Create a list of text items
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to "Volumes/Calendars_2013"

    end tell

I just tried adding collens to the end of the folder path. For some reason the script skipped the relink line. Below is the code with your update. I'm thinking its not finding the images because the script needs to make a list of all the images and choose the one that matches the missing image.
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS5.5"
              tell document 1
                        set linkList to links
set errInfo to "" -- We'll display error if we can't relink an item

  • Placing images at an exact scale in Indesign CS5?

    Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can clue me in here... I've just updated from Indesign CS3 to CS5. I was hoping in the upgrade Indesign would give you an option for placing images in picture frames at an exact scale (like you can in Quark), for instance if you place an empty picture box on the master pages and enter 55% scale you would drop in images on each page of the layout at 55% scale.
In Indesign CS3 the closest I could get to that was to place an "FPO" image in the picture boxes on the master pages at 55% scale, then when I'd replace each FPO on the layout pages with my images they would drop in at 55% scale. It worked pretty well.
With CS5 I'm finding that when I replace an FPO image it will still drop in at the same scale the FPO is at, but ONLY if you load and place one image at a time... if you load, say, twenty images and drop them into the layout replacing the FPO images, they come out as prorortionally fitted to the picture frame... NOT as 55%.
this is a real issue for me as I routinely work on layouts where I need to place 400 and up images at an exact scale...
Anyone know a work around here, or any tips?
    Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, you can't set scaling for a empty frame. You can use a placholder image and scale that, and if you turn off relink preserves dimensions relinking to a new image would preserve the scaling, but only if you do it one at a time through the links panel. Using the Place command and replacing theimages will not preserve the scaling, so through the interface there isn't much help.
On the other hand, I think this could be scripted. If you need all the images to be the same scale it should just be a matter of looping through the document images and setting the scale. If none of the scripters are taking notice here, ask over in the scriping forum.

  • Remotely triggering an action in InDesign?

I see a lot of ways to solve this problem and I can't seem to decide which solution is least bad. Advice please.
I have an environment where InDesign deals with linked images on a remote AFP fileserver, and I would like a script to trigger and run in InDesign when a photo is added to a directory on that fileserver. The model in which I am thinking about this in is the afterAttributeChanged event, which gets fired on a Link if the link status changes to LinkStatus.LINK_OUT_OF_DATE. Of course this model doens't work if the photo is not linked. (In this case, the newly added photo will be replacing an existing FPO photo, but it cannot overwrite the FPO photo, it needs to have a different name. So using the afterAttributeChanged event is not feasible).
My environment is all Macs running CS5. Preferred scripting language is JavaScript.
For OS technical reasons, detection of the files newly added to the fileserver really has to run as a process on the fileserver to be reliable. (Detection is implemented as a kqueue in perl, but that's not really important). So the simplest implementation would be a simple TCP server on the fileserver that accepts a connection from each InDesign client with the Socket API, and then a thread or listener that woke up whenever there was data on the socket to read. (Let's say a new file is added once/hour and I would like InDesign to notice the file within five seconds.)
Unfortunately, InDesign's socket API does not support this, and there's no support for select()/poll() on an existing connection to learn when there is data to read, nor is there support for non-blocking IO. So that's right out.
Approach I: It looks like the Socket API does support non-blocking checks for incoming connections with Socket.poll(), which is really more like a combination of select(2) or poll(2) and accept(2) and not really just plain poll(2). So I could have the InDesign script create a socket to listen on for notifications of file updates, then connect to the server on a secondary connection, tell the server its port number, and then call Socket.poll() on the socket from an idle handler. This means I am polling the TCP socket the idle event handler, which seems bad but not that bad. It's abusing the Socket API because it doesn't support a reasonable approach. And there's no support for INADDR_ANY, so I need to guess at a free TCP port to listen on, but I guess I can iterate so it's not a big deal.
Approach II: Instead of doing all of that, I could write a small helper program to run on each machine that connects to the server and waits for data. When it receives that data, then it could send a message to InDesign telling it the filename. This seems like it would work, but would be kind of cumbersome (more programs, an extra process, etc.).  Also, then, how should the process signal InDesign?
Approach II(a): Signal InDesign with AppleScript. My process could just run osascript -e 'tell app "Adobe InDesign CS5" to do script "newPhoto.jsx"'. That seems like it could work, but also there might be annoying problems if message happens to come in while the user is in a modal dialog box.
Approach II(b): Use Bridgetalk. I'm not sure how I would do this -- I don't see a library that I would link my helper program against, so I suppose I would have to  have InDesign direct something like Adobe Bridge to talk to my helper program and hope that Bridge's scripting has a richer set of primitives for asynchronous IO.
Approach III: Use Adobe Bridge's HttpConnection.async=true object, and use asynchronous IO in Bridge to implement my helper process, and then have it send messages to InDesign via BridgeTalk.
I don't really like any of these solutions. I feel like Approach II(a) might be better since it doesn't abuse InDesign's idle loop (how fragile is that?), but maye Approach I is cleaner and more maintainable? I have no deal idea on II(b) or III, but it feels like adding a dependency on Adobe Bridge is may be unwise.
Has anyone implemented this sort of thing? Signalling InDesign to perform a task from another process on the same machine, or via a remote machine, with any success? What does your implementation experience tell you?
    Thanks!

SuperMacGuy: Thanks for the thoughts. I'd really rather the discussion not head towards how to monitor the files outside of InDesign -- I have a solution for that that works pretty well (kqueue), but we can talk about it another thread if you like. I'm very happy with my solution.
For me, the question is triggering InDesign. Do you do that from your script? It sounds like you really doing batch processing, which is not my application here. To the extent that you have anything analagous, I guess your entire batch workflow is written in AppleScript so your easy answer is the equivalent of II(a), though you don't need to run "osascript."
If a user needs to run the automated app, they run it. Or if they can't be interrupted, then they stop it. I'd be worried about how this entire process runs if a user is doing something completely different (or in the modal dialog as you mention). [...]
But, there is the possibility that you could use InDesign server to handle your process more reliably.
In short, no. The use case here involves the production editor actively working on a document in InDesign while the photo editor is preparing final photos to replace the FPO placeholders. The script in InDesign is short and sweet, and it's also not the end of the world if it doesn't happen automatically or gets deferred. It's really quite analagous to updating links.
InDesign server would not work because the layouts are actively open and being worked on in ID Desktop. It is also too expensive -- paying around $15k  for this little bit of added functionality doesn't make financial sense.
I've never considered trying to run the notification process on the server, mainly since I'm not in IT nor would consider windows programming.
Err, this is probably a better question for your other thread, but how did we get to Windows programming? I guess you must be running a Windows fileserver? I guess my solutions wouldn't work for you then.

  • Auto-generated links exported from InDesign do not work in tablet apps

Hyperlinks automatically detected and exported from InDesign CS6 8.0.1 as a PDF work fine on the desktop version of Acrobat Reader. However, on the iPad version of Adobe Reader as well as iBooks and GoodReader, these links are completely ignored, meaning they are just text.
On the other hand, if I was to manually set the hyperlink in InDesign or Acrobat, the link works fine.
It would be extremely tedious and time consuming to manually reset hundreds of hyperlinks in my documents since InDesign use to handle this correctly.
Is this a bug? If so, it's pretty serious and should be Adobe's priority to fix since millions of people read documents on tablet devices.

No, it's a Feature of Acrobat and reader that they attempt to create links from anything that "looks like" a URL. Other readers lack the feature.
It's not good practice to depend on this in any case as it's hardly foolproof even in Acrobat. Links that break across lines, for example, will not be properly recognized.

  • Text Wrap options not showing in InDesign CS3

Using InDesign CS3 on a Mac 10.4.  I've had this problem for a couple of months now and it's getting past the point of annoying.  When I open my text wrap options pallete it's blank even when I expand options.  I can see the text wrap icons in my header panel, but I no longer have options to change the right/left/top/bottom margins.  Just a general "add wrap" and "remove wrap".  Is there any way I can get my pallete back?  I've tried defaulting my tools, but still it does not show up.  I don't know what to do to get it back.

Did you try resetting preferences? While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files. If you don't get the message about deleting preferences, you weren't fast enough.

  • Re: i can't start up indesign cc each time it says it has to close the program on start-up. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and have rebooted my machine seeveral times and it still doesn't work.

How do you create another user account?
I am having a similar problem - have deleted preferences which did not  solve - this is since I  installed the latest update - it is very slow - and  cannot close - says background task running  - but when I open background task  window - shows nothing - only way to close is to use Windows task manager and end program
mouse movements are delayed - it takes forever to do anything
    Windows 7 Pro
    Intel CPU - 2.93 Ghz
    Ram - 8 Gb
    AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series

My problem is really weird - ID CC 2014 with the latest update  can become very slow - at first it was only when I had other applications going [especially Photoshop] - but  for the last week it has  been every time I try to use it - even with no other app running.
Mouse movements are delayed, any selection takes forever to take effect. When closing - I sometimes get message saying background task is running [but not every time]
new user account didn't help, deleting preferences neither .
I had several ID files open -closed those - crashed ID - rebooted - opened  totally different files - same problem.
However - I have just deleted the file Recovery Data  in the users/user name/appdata/local/adobe/indesign/version 10.0/en_US/Caches/InDesign REcovery- and that seems to have temporarily fixed the issue as ID is behaving normally now.  [I guess that 's the same as  creating another user account]

  • InDesign crashes every time you double click to open an .indd file on Windows system

InDesign crashes every single time you double click to open an InDesign file and has done so since replacement of the original version of InDesign introduced in the Creative Cloud launch.  Does anyone else have this problem?  I'd say it was unique to my system if I hadn't experienced the issue repeatedly on several different systems now.  You have to relaunch InDesign which then opens the file from recovery, so it saw the file you tried to launch in the first place.  This leads me to believe the problem lies with the file association registry of InDesign inside Windows systems.  I find it unbelievable that this problem still exists and remains unreported and that a solution hasn't been implemented by Adobe to rectify the issue.
The double click is a fundamental tenant of opening files on a Windows system in the same way a single click is on a Mac.  Does InDesign crash ever time a Mac user clicks to open their files, I think not.
Anyone got any ideas other than the obvious which is Adobe actually got their figure out and fixed it.
    Cheers,
    Pat Doyle

    Hi Michael,
I'll give it a go.  Don't really like messing with the registry on Windows boxes.  Yes you can do it, but it can end up being a case of the operation was a success, but the patient died.
Just was rather hoping someone else had already experienced this problem and posted the registry tweak.  Didn't want spend hours reinventing the wheel.  Not because I'm lazy, but I have so many demands on my time that resolving a minor issue that effects me only seems like it should be pretty low priority.
The system I'm using is brand new, but the problem seems to have followed me regardless which may indicate that it is seated in my synchronization information somehow.  Really don't know how that could happen as I'm not an Adobe engineer or have the remotest idea where to even start looking.  So I think I'll mark your suggestion as the "Answer" and just learn to live with it.
Windows eh! Can't live with - can't live without it.  I'm sure Mac can be just as temperamental. Just have to chalk this one up as being just another ghost in the machine.
Thanks for all the advice you have kindly offered, much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Pat Doyle

  • I am trying to uninstall and reinstall InDesign and a box shows up saying there is a file open, and I can't find it to close it. Before that, InDesign wouldn't open at all.

I was trying to open InDesign and it wouldn't open at all. So I tried to uninstall it, intending to reinstall it to see if that would fix the problem. A box popped up saying a file was open, but I couldn't find the file to close it. What else can I try?

I just uninstalled it and am waiting for it to reinstall. I sincerely hope that I have not lost everything that I worked on so hard. Now that mobile me is gone, I have not been able to go between devices to transfer things. I was merely trying to take a document I had worked on and open it in pages, but it said my version was too old. When I updated, it wouldn't load. Now I cannot do anything. I hope that the reinstall fixes it without losing everything. Please advise!!! Yes, I am in panic mode.

  • How can two people edit the same InDesign CC document?

I am looking for a desktop publishing application that I can use to create programs for a high school choir and am experimenting with InDesign CC.  I'll do most of the work creating the progam, but the choir teacher at the last moment will have changes for me or will do them herself.  Either way she will be producing the final copy for printing.
In an ideal world we would be able to edit the same file at the same time, me from my office and her from her classroom, not on a shared network, much like Google Docs.
Does InDesign CC have this capability?  What steps would I use to approach this problem using InDesign CC?

You can look into InCopy for text changes and put the InDesign file in a
    dropbox folder.

  • How do I import multiple Ai files into one Indesign File - whilst still keeping the Ai Files editable and up dateable for the one Indesign File?

    Hi All,
Im relatively new to Ai and Indesign, and have been doing Uni work over Christmas, and have a rather urgent question thats stressing me out.
I originally had many art boards in my ai file, but due to the number, I split these into single files to help my computer run better.
Now I want to organise them into one document to save. From searching online Indesign can import these and save as one file, yet automatically update if the original ai file is updated. I would like to do this but just don't know how to do this correctly?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Im using CC Ai and indesign.
    Thanks in advance
    Sam

Yes, effectively I would like to catalogue the files into one collection so i can save as one PDF and Print as one.:)
I know I could save each AI as a pdf them then merge the pdf's together in acrobat, but I have nearly 100 files so would feel more comfortable seeing them all together before print / saving.
My concern is that if I insert them in Ai, will the file resolution reduce? and will the ai still be editable and would it update the indesign file?
    Thanks for the quick reply

  • Can I replace Pantone color books in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop?

These new Pantone + books are a pain in ...well... you understand.  In my years as a designer, I have just clicked on the correct book and color swatch, but now...
I am using Windows 7 and the CS6 suite of products.  We have a company logo in which both main colors have dramatically changed with the new books.  I won't go into all of the tricks we've tried to be able to place it in new documents without the color changing.  I now think the only answer is to replace the color books as Adobe recommends.  I do have two questions, though.
First, can I change the books in all of my products?  Adobe only gives instructions for Illustrator and InDesign, but I regularly have to change vendor logos into our company colors in photoshop, and I am finding the color in Photoshop isn't the same when I bring that logo into Illustrator, even though they have the same number.
Second, what are the end results if I do change the books when I send a document to a printer?  We usually do our printing in-house, so I am wondering when we buy PMS 2955 if it will be what I see in the old books or the new books.  And what will an out-of-house printer be using?
My main two concerns are (1) seeing the correct color on screen and (2) printing the correct color.  I don't really care how I get there, but I'd like it to be a permanent fix so I don't have to go in and manipulate swatches every time I add a logo to an item.
    Thanks for any help!
BTW - haven't been to this new forum format and don't know if I am posting this in the right place.  If not, please help me find the correct location.  Thanks!
