Frame Maker document Format conversion to InDesign format

Frame Maker stores the authored document into binary format. My question is any Adobe Scripting/program guide to read the framemaker data and convert in a format which Adobe InDesign can understand.
I read an article that there is a MIF filter tool which provide such functionality. I love coding than using some prebuilt tool.
Is anyone has experienced anything related to converting existing framemake document using scripting/program to the format Adobe InDesign?
Thanks
Anil

Hi, Anil:
If the article you read was in InDesign Magazine, it's probably my review of DTP Tools's MIF Filter plug-in for InDesign.
The FrameMaker Software Development Kit (SDK) is one way to program FrameMaker. Framescript is a third-party tool that runs scripts on FrameMaker. There are some publicly-available Framescripts, and many commercially-available, plus a few folks who custom-develop
Frame's MIF (Maker Interchange Language) is open. Opening an FM file that was saved as MIF perfectly recreates the original; well, not exactly, because it does leave out almost all miscellaneous corruption and garbage, so it's better than the orignal.
FrameMaker 10 introduces scripting with javascript by using ExtendScript. Search Google for terms like "framemaker 10 sdk," "FrameMaker MIF Reference Manual," and "Framescript," without quotes for links to these tools.
In my article I mentioned that there are some FrameMaker constructs that cannot be converted exactly to InDesign, because InDesign doesn't have those features. True sideheads are one example. "Straddle paragraphs" that go across two or more columns are no longer missing in InDesign, where they're called "span paragraphs." If you think you can program true InDesign sideheads, more power to you! The MIF Filter does its best to duplicate the FrameMaker appearance in its InDesign conversions, but the behavior is different; this means that if you edit such "innovative" conversions, they may fall apart.
FrameMaker can export XML and RTF, which InDesign can import, so you may find that these formats are sufficient to migrate your content.
HTH

Reason why Justin's code does not work for other days is date format mask DAY returns day blank padded to 9 characters which is the longest day name which, yes you guessed right, is WEDNESDAY. You either need to blank pad or use format modifier FM:

    Hi,
I would like to know as to how can I add links to open xml and csv files stored in another location? Please advice how to place links in my frame maker document?
    Kindly advice.
    Thanks

Special > Hypertext > Command "open document" will do its best to open the target document inside FrameMaker, which may not be much help; Special > Hypertext > Command "message …" will use the application you specify. The user guide for 7.0 says this about absolute links, and I don't think anything has changed since:
For example, to start PaintBrush and open the Ship.pcx file on drive C you would use the command message system pbrush.exe C:/Ship.pcx
I've not often used a relative link, and not recently: the same source says
folder levels are separated by a slash / even in Windows and Mac
[relative links] FrameMaker searches for a relative pathname beginning in the folder that contains the current document
[absolute links] FrameMaker searches for an absolute pathname beginning at the top of the file system. In Windows, the absolute pathname begins with the drive specifier, a colon and a slash.

  • Frame Maker - Image caption

How can we add image caption in a Frame Maker document, as in a word document?
I have created a style called Image caption, where the font is bold. But there is no image number. Manually, I have added numbers. But the drawback is that if I insert another image in between the existing paragraphs, then I have to update the image numbers manually. Please let me know, if there is a way to create a Paragraph style, so that Image numbers are also updated automatically.

    Assuming you want "Figure 123"
    Format > Paragraph > Designer
Paragraph Tag: [ Image caption ]
    Properties: [ Numbering ]
    [*] Autonumber Format:
    [ F:Figure\ <n+> ]
"F:" specifiies counter F, so that other auto-numbered paragraphs won't disrupt caption numbers.
"\ " is a non-breaking space, useful for cross-referencing captions near right margins.
"<n+>" increments counter F, which starts at 0, so the first caption defaults to 1, depending on book numbering properties.
The auto-numbering works correctly if the caption paragraph is located:
    in normal Flow A,
in a Table cell anchored to Flow A,
in a text frame within an anchored frame, but only in the case where there is a single text frame containing a caption in that anchored frame, or
in a table cell in a text frame in an anchored frame, also subject to the single-text-frame-caption rule
If you have more than one text frame in an anchored frame, they all get the same auto-number (up through FM9, anyway). This probably isn't a defect.
I don't know what happens if you use unanchored frames, as they are unwise for multiple more serious reasons.

  • CS5 InDesign cannot open files in the InDesign CS5 document format

I'll be working in InDesign CS5 with no problems then at some point I'll double click on an InDesign file and a window comes up and says - InDesign cannot open files in the InDesign CS5 document format. Sometimes when this happens I have to completely reboot my whole system before I can get InDesign to function correctly. Is this a flaw with CS5? Did not happen with previous versions. It doesn't always happen but I can't figure out what causes it. Would appreciate anyones help. I'm getting to really HATE InDesign!!

I have not uninstalled and reinstalled, but I did just switch over to another workstation using Time Machine. The previous system was Leopard. This one is running Snow Leopard.
I'm not sure how to parse this. When you say "switch over to another workstaiton using Time Machine" do you mean, "started using another machine that happens to be using Time Machine for backups and is also running 10.6 instead of 10.5"?
Or do you mean, "Used the Time Machine program to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6?" If you mean the second one, well, I can't say I am surprised that things are messed up. And that would make your problem rather different than the other posters, which is good reason for you to have started your own thread (and thus your own solution)....
I'm a little bit leary of getting in and changing things in Terminal, without understanding what I am changing. Plus this is a workstation at work, so if I screw something up, that is not a good things, and I don't have time to spend a day fixing things back up again, with the way our workload is.
Well, you can find a lot of marginal documentation about lsregister and Launch Services, but I wonder whether your understood the ramifications of messing with Time Machine (or maybe I have misinterpretted you!). I'd be surprised if you found another way to fix this, other than uninstall/reinstall.
    Good luck.

  • Frame Maker 10 with S1000D - Figure TOC not in format

I am using Frame Maker 10 with S1000D Application Pack, i have new document from S1000D->New->Crew Modle, inputing the data as per the Elements and updating the TOC S1000D->Update TOCs all works fine, but when i insert the Figure and updated the TOCs its not in the format
When i checked the sample document which is given in FM 10 S1000D, Once i Insert the Element "Figure Title" it inputs auto number...but not in Crew Modle.
Please help me how to go with this

This formatting error is due to a missing text format rule in the Crew Module application. The quickest way to fix this is as follows:
Locate the S1000D application files within the FrameMaker installation folder.
Open the EDD for the Crew application: crew_401.edd.fm.
Also open the EDD for the Description application: description_401.edd.fm.
In the crew EDD locate the figureTitle element definition which is in the Graphics section. You should see that figureTitle has no formatting rules.
The Description EDD does include the required formatting rules, so simply copy those rules into the Crew EDD.
Save the Crew EDD. This may require changing the EDD's file permissions to allow read/write access.
    Open the Crew template: crew_401.tpl.fm.
Import the EDD into the template using File > Import > Element Definitions...
    Save the Crew template.
Open the crew data module, the List of Figures will now show the correct formatting.
Note: Do not import the EDD directly into an open data module as that will overwrite the attribute values as defined by the BREX mapping.

  • Scaling text, pictures etc. when changing document format in InDesign

    Hi,
I am making an example of a cookbook layout in InDesign. This is my first time working with the software and I made the document in a totally wrong format. I made a document in 200 x 260 cm, when I was suppose to make it in 200 x 260 mm (duhh).
So my question is, is it possible to automaticly scale all my text, pictures etc when I change the document format to the correct one? Or do I have to do it all manually?
    Thanks for answers!

If you've setup your document with margins and guides etc. then scaling it should be ok if you go to Layout>Layout Adjustment and turn this on.
Then change the size of your document to the new size. You will have a bit of tidying up but it can work.
Your other option to get you out of this now are to import the InDesign file into a new document at the right size. - http://indesignsecrets.com/zanelli-releases-multipageimporter-for-importing-both-pdf-and-i ndd-files.php
Or you could request for your printers to resize it this once.
But you should of course resize this to the correct size.

  • INDD CS6 error: "InDesign cannot open files in the "InDesign CS5.5 Document" format.

Working in CS6 on Mac OS X 10.7.5: When I double click an INDD file in the Finder, I get the following error from InDesign:
"The document "doc name" could not be opened. InDesign cannot open files in the "InDesign CS5.5 Document" format."
This just started recently and I have not been able to figure out why. I have not updated INDD or OS X. I can't think of anything else that changed, other than maybe a Java update. Have not updated to the latest OS yet.
The files I'm trying to open are files I created with CS6 - as recent as a few minutes ago.  I can open them fine using the File>Open command in InDesign so I can open them, but I can't open them by double clicking them in Finder or dragging them to the INDD icon in the dock.
The info in Finder's "Get Info" window says they are CS6 files set to open in CS6 and I have permissions to read and write. They are not locked.
This is not incapacitating, but rather annoying and slows me down since this is one of the most common ways I open files.
    Any suggestsion would be appreciated.

Probably won't work because it sounds like an OS problem of some sort, but you can try trashing the prefs. See Replace Your Preferences

  • Why no native open document format?

I'm currently working on a draft for a native document format
like ODF (OpenDocument), but beeing more "professional" while
supporting color management, intermedia representations, product
definition and job networking with easy file exchange.
All needs to this document format are based on solving
current problems with proprietary formats, dump applications and
    mostly conversions.
As I can see the workflow would be: converting the
application document format (e.g. InDesign) to PDF and then it will
be converted to Mars to be processed with XML tools to be converted
to PDF... this will multiplicate all problems that currently exists
    in document processing!
So I'm wondering why Adobe released a document format that is
made to be converted and not a document format that is supported
    natively without conversion?

But nobody deals with this intention!?
The intention that Adobe makes public is: There is PDF, there
will be PDF and will will be PDF and by the way we have there a
little Mars format where can use your XML tools to modify the
document easily, but pleeease convert this back to PDF!
Why Adobe doesn't force the native support? This would be the
(r)evolution, but not one more destination to convert to and to
    have problem with.

  • A3 document format doesn't choose correct format automatically when printing

    Situation:

    - Document format is A3
    Problem:
When printing, the Print dialogue doesn't choose A3 automatically. In other applications, this work.
Is there any way to make Indesign automatically choose A3?

    Hi.
    Try this:
    - close all documents
    - choose File > Print presets > Define and choose "Default"
    -  Format > Choose "Paper Format" and set it to "Custom" (You may also set up other options you may find useful)
    - that's it...
I don't guarantee result, but you may give it a try.

  • Epson SX218 doesn't print (client-error-document-format-not-supported)

    Hi there,
I'm currently trying to figure out how to get my Epson Stylus SX 218 to work. Unfortunately, cups (or the printer or whatever causes my problems...) obviously just doesn't want me to get this to work.
Here's what I've done so far:
I installed everything as described in the CUPS wiki article (so ghostscript and all the foomatic-stuff is installed, usblp is NOT blacklisted, see why below)
    I installed epson-inkjet-printer-workforce-sx218 from AUR
    I started cups...
Nothing worked (Printer not recognized, either with or without blacklisted usblp module...)
I searched the forums for a solution
I installed cups-usblp and reinstalled all the cups stuff
    Printer got recognized! Yay!
So, now the printer is set up in cups using the avasys driver. But...
    It doesn't print!
When I try to print a test page via the cups webinterface it keeps telling me
    Unsupported format "application/vnd.cups-banner".
The following packages are installed now:
    $ pacman -Qs cups
    local/cups-usblp 1.5.0-1
    local/libcups 1.5.0-1
    $ pacman -Qs foomatic

    local/epson-inkjet-printer-workforce-320-sx218 1.0.0-6
    $ pacman -Qs ghostscript

Please let me know if you should need other outputs, logfiles, etc. I appreciate any idea that could help me to get this damn thing to finally print something.
    Thank you very much!

    Hi Radhakrishnan,
ORARRP doesn't actually do any printing itself. Via COM/Active-X, it calls the appropriate program that corresponds to the type of output, and then this program does the actual printing. For PDF, it calls Acrobat Reader to print the document. Acrobat Reader displays the printer dialog to let you choose which printer to use, and then when you click OK, Acrobat Reader prints the document and sends it to the printer.
I expect that you'll find that when you use Acrobat Reader yourself on this machine it has exactly the same problems with this particular printer configuration. If so, you'll need to contact Adobe for further assistance.
    regards,
    Stewart

  • How to make text formatting stick on book cover when sent to Apple or to PDF?

In iPhoto '11 (version 9), one can format text on book covers and in text blocks by selecting the text and right clicking.  Font, size, color, and shadowing can be selected and changed.  All of this displays correctly and sticks when the book is saved, etc.  However, if the book is "previewed" or exported to a PDF (which I believe is the format sent to Apple for actual printing) some of the formatting is lost, permanently.  It just goes away.  Why?  And, more importantly, how can I make this formatting stick?  I'm mainly interested in shadowing as it gives the text a 3d look.  All shadowing is lost - font and size do stick.  I have successfully done this shadowing in several previous releases of iPhoto, and actually had it printed by Apple.  Any ideas out there?  Or is this another wonderful "feature" ?
    Thanks for playing.

Sorry LN, but that is the problem.  When I do either the preview or the export to PDF, the shadow formatting disappears.  There is another forum discussion where some person discovered this only after receiving their three hard cover books.  I'm pretty sure it is a bug.  I have Snow Leopard and iPhoto '11 (v9) both with latest updates.
One other note - when applying the text shadow, anytime I adjust either of the three shadow sliders, the shadow disappears and I must click on the main shadow button to make the adjusted shadow reappear.   As I said, it does then stick until I do either the preview or PDF as described in the article you referenced.  Very, very, very annoying.
Will try to contact Apple today, although I have had very poor luck with ever getting them to admit to any problem in the past.  ( pride goeth before the fall....). Hope they will listen, but I have a close deadline on this book.
