FrameMaker 10 and Save as PDF

Why does it take so long to produce a PDF when you use Save as PDF? I was running prior, FrameMaker 8 and on XP platform. I still use XP, but it takes a long time before the PDF is produced. Is there a patch/update/something that will speed this performance?

I am using FM9 and have the same issue with PDF's. Below is a link to another thread about the same problem.
Nothing actually worked for me...but thought you might want to read through it.

is possible in acrobat reader fill in and save interactive PDF created with LiveCycle Designer?

Hi,
Only if the form has been Reader Enabled before it is sent out to the user with Reader.
There are two ways of Reader Enabling the form. One using Acrobat Standard v9 or Acrobat Professional v8 (both have license restrictions). The other is to use LC Reader Extensions ES2, which is a server product (additional costs).
Some info here:
http://www.assuredynamics.com/index.php/2010/11/using-livecycle-forms-in-acrobat-and-reade r/
A search of the forums for "Reader Extensions" or "Reader Enable" will give more information.
Hope that helps,

• Unable to digitally sign and save a PDF document

I am currently using ADOBE ACROBAT 8.0 Professional (Ver 8.1.0). I provide proofreading service for a client. The client provides me with a PDF which I use the comment and mark up tool to indicate required changes. Once all of the comments are complete, I mark the document approved or disapproved and attach a digital signature.
Recently, many files that I have recieved from the client will not allow me to sign and save the PDF. I can save the PDF without the signature but not when it is digitally signed. The error reads:
"The document could not be saved. A number is out of range"
I queried my client to find out if they have made any changes. They have recently upgraded to Illustrator 4 and they create the PDF's for me from the Illustrator files they work from. There are four teams using the same Illustrator program but not all of them are producing files that I cannot sign and save.
Can anyone tell me what the error indicates? Is there a property assigned to the document that I can not recognize that refers to this problem.
Since the files I work on contain proprietary information, I prefer not to attach them to this forum. If anyone is interested in helping, I will share a file to fully explain my problem.

I will try that, thank you.

• Is it possible to create and save a .PDF without any compression to the resulting .PDF?

I need an uncompressed file so I can use the resulting PDF to do a find/replace. Can't do it with compression.

Dave,
Thanks for the reply. Of all the suggestions I've received this seemed to
be most promising. I gave it a try and the problem is that when I attempt
to save as optimized a message box pops up and says I have to save my
document first. Low and behold when I save it, compression occurs. Even
when I select the options you suggest I'm left with a compressed document.

You don't want the UncompressPDF plugin - that's designed to split out the
COS objects but doesn't remove the Flate encoding (plus if you've never
compiled a plugin before, it's not really the time to learn).
Instead, simply save your PDF file using the PDF (Optimized) file type,
click the Settings button and under "Clean Up" - "Object compression
options", choose "Remove compression". Turn everything else off if you
want to retain the PDF content exactly as it was before.
Your document-level scripts will then be in the file as plain text.

• Create and save a .pdf file

Afternoon! I am creating a pdf utilizing the cfdocument tag and it works great. It opens and displays well. My question is, is there a way to automatically save that generated pdf on the server without opening it? My end goal is to run a scheduled task every week that creates and saves a pdf automatically.

<cfdocument format="pdf" orientation="landscape" filename="YourPDFName.pdf" overwrite="yes">
it will save a copy of the pdf in the same folder as the <cfdocument> is run from, the problem I got is it wond display the pdf at creation time, all that is returned to my screen is the letter "z"
so may be best to fun the code in a loop and one time add in the filename and overwrite paramaters, if you dont need it displayed, then your gold.

Hey there @jadoue , welcome to the forums!
Yes, you can scan a PDF as legal size and save it. Check out the screen shot I posted below as an example of what you are looking for in the printer software that is installed on your computer.

• I can't print an email and "save as pdf"

Since the last system upgrade, which I believe is Yosemite 10.10.1, I have not been able to print emails and save them as a pdf file. I cannot save an attachment as a pdf file. The problem is somewhat recent and has just happened after the last upgrade or possibly the one prior. The problem is only applicable to emails; I am able to save other documents as a pdf file; just not an email or an attachment. This is on a MacBook Pro. Any suggestions?

For some unknown reason, it is working this morning. I shut down my computer overnight and this morning it is working. I re-booted 3 times yesterday with not result. Now I can save the attachment and print the email and save as pdf. Gremlins I guess. However, thank you for your concern and help on the issue.

• FrameMaker 10 Save as PDF and landscape pages

Using FrameMaker 10 on Windows XP Professional SP3 32 bit system - When I use the Save as PDF function on a book containing both portrait and landscape pages, the landscape pages are clipped to portrait mode. If I print to Adobe PDF, the page orientation is correct in the PDF, however, no bookmarks are generated. If I check the Convert CMYK colorsto RGB setting in the PDF Setup for Selected Files dialog box, then the page orientation in the PDF is correct, and the bookmarks are generated as they were in FrameMaker 8.
Is there a method to this madness?

I have Acrobat 8 Pro. The explanation of the RGB mode with XP makes sense. I did not know that. Makes me wonder how Frame 8 was producing all the nice PDFs we have used for the last couple of years.
I tried that setting because I saw others were having issues with that and wondered if there was a relationship between the two. Just a guess.
Printing to a file and distilling it does not produce a PDF at all.
Thanks for your help.

Hi,
I am working on a SharePoint 2010 Visual WebPart that lets a user click a button to generata a SSRS report and save the report in a SharePoint Library as a PDF file. Code is mentioned below:

If I open the report manually in SharePoint Site, it works fines it even works fine when try to view in a WebPart.
Can someone help me with this ?
Regards, Vikram

Hi Vicky,
Based on the error message, it is related to the service account for reporting service.
If the Report Server service runs under a built-in account such as NetworkService, the Grant database access option in SharePoint Central Administration will not work correctly.
Configure the service account to run under a domain user account as follows:
1. Start the Reporting Services Configuration tool and connect to the report server.
2. On the Service Account page, click Use another account, enter a domain user account, and click Apply.
3. Click Web Service Identity, for Report Server, click New, type an application Restart the Report Server service.

• FM 10 and save as PDF/Distiller issue

OS: XP Pro sp3 and completely up to date.
Acrobat 9 Pro and up to date
Just installed FM10 (+ updated) and I also uninstalled Acrobat 5.
When users go to Save As PDF it tells them they must have Distiller v5.0 or later, it fails to recognise or utilize Distiller 9..
Trying to figure out a way to get it to work w/o reinstalling Acrobat.
TIA!

If you take a look at the forum threads, you'll pick up pretty quickly that SaveAs PDF isn't really a recommended way to create a PDF because it has a long history of bugs.
To debug your current situation though, have you installed the Microsoft HotFix for all PostScript printers, including Distiller? This is the baseline for any PDF work on XP systems...
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=952909 (Gives details on the Hotfix)
http://support.microsoft.com/Hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=952909&kbln=en-us (Direct Download Link)
After that, can you Print to the Adobe PDF printer on your system? Both from other applications and from Frame (in Frame's Print box, check Generate Acrobat Data and uncheck Print To File)?

• Ever since I downloaded Acrobat Pro 11.0.09, the PDF Maker and Save As PDF have not worked, but instead cause MS Word 2013 to crash.

Ever since I downloaded the Acrobat Pro 11.0.09, the PDF Maker has not worked, but instead causes MS Word 2013 to crash. I cannot find the cause or the solution.
forumnotifier

OK I will try to elaborate this time with pictures so it is clear what I am asking and what the issue I am facing is.
The specific option I want to be able to use from within the Adobe Acrobat Pro user interface is
File\Create\Batch Create Multiple Files
When I select that menu item a floating tool bar thing pops up that I can drag and drop files onto.
If I drag excel or powerpoint documents onto it and press OK it converts them fine. If I drag MS word documents into it the documents appear in the list but when I click OK it says no files processed.
In the process of troubleshooting I also tried using the Add Files button. That is when I discovered that MS word documents (*.doc, *.docx) are not showing up in the list of supported file types.
The same thing happens when I try converting a single file using the File\Create\Create PDF From File menu item. Just like above the MS word documents do not show up in the list of supported file types.
Looking in my registry entries as suggested by the article linked to by one of the posters above I can see both *.doc and *.docx types registered in the correct place.
Unless I can use the batch convert command as intended by the time my trial period runs out in 13 days I cannot justify buying this software. If converting the documents one at a time was acceptable I would just use Save As PDF from within MS Word which works just fine. I need the batch convert function so I can convert my whole library of word documents to PDF at once.
Any further assistance greatly appreciated!

Gray

• Framemaker 12, Save as PDF and Print PDF Not working...

We are using Framemaker 12 version 12.0.3.424, it tells me it is the latest patch level, and the issue we are having is that it won't either save as or print to PDF, both options are failing, they start up and then go to a certain point and come up as "not responding" and then just stops. I have managed to get a postscript file on two occasions that got 141 pages out of 1400+. I have gone through a bunch of the threads here and made sure that I have changed Adobe PDF printer to the default and deselected the box about using the specific fonts, still nothing. We are also using Adobe Acrobat XI Standard, and that is now up to the latest patch level as well. I am running out of things to try in order to get this full book put together and ready for delivery. If anyone has any additional things to try that would be great. One thing I feel might be an issue is that some of the files seem to be using a different font, "Times" vs. "Times New Roman", Frame automatically substitutes it, so was wondering if that is the issue.
Any and all assistance will be great on this.

> .ps file was running about 57,000kb
Then you aren't anywhere near a 32-bit file size constraint.
> We are running 64 bit machines here, though the program I think is the 32 bit version.
Pretty much all CPUs are 64-bit now. What matters is the OS version, and Win7 and 8 installs are commonly 64-bit these days. FM may not even have specific 32- or 64-bit installs. I've tested FM9 on Win7/64 for file size limits, and it sails past 4GB with no problems.
> ... stops everytime on one particular page, that has was is an OLE linked .vsd file in it.
As if the world needed another reason to never ever use OLE for anything anywhere, esp. in Framemaker. Export that object in a stable graphical file format (PDF should work). Import that.

• Is there a way to create a contact box on photoshop and save as PDF?

Can someone explain how or where to find a tutorial to create a contact box on photoshop then save as a pdf? Thank you!

Contact box? Your question is not clear perhaps if there was one and only one standard contact box on planet Earth there would probably be more the one correct answer to you question. Please describe what your desired in the PDF file. If you want something that can be filled in like a contact form you may need to use a different Adobe product like Acrobat. Or something to create an HTML Page with a contact form.

• How do you change the dpi in Illustrator and save as pdf?

I've created a file in Illustrator cs4 that I need to change the 350 dpi of and to save as a pdf before having it sent out to be printed. I've found ways to change the ppi...but will that do the same thing as changing the dpi? Any advice would be much appreciated!

This might explain it
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/370714
The device has the dpi not the file itself the file has a ppi resolution the screens are prepared in lpi.
The above explains it the highest resolution I have ever been asked for was 350 ppi for offset printing 300ppi is normal.
In other word you do not control the dpi as Steve mentions.

• Dynamically change of filename and save as pdf on LINUX

Hello,
currently we're facing the following problems:
We have to create a report that will have to run several times. It should be avoided that the rdf has to be called more than one time.
After the run, the report should create a pdf which has to be saved in a directory on LINUX with a distinct filename e.g. rep_nnnnnn_hhmiss.pdf.
How can we implement that?
Best regards
Markus

Hi,
You can use Advanced Distribution to save the output file using a name based on a report variable.
It's fairly involved so you may need to look up Creating Advanced Distributions in the Oracle documentation.
But essentially you need to create a distribution XML file that looks something like this:
<?xml version="1.0" ?>
<!DOCTYPE destination SYSTEM "file:$ORACLE_HOME/reports/dtd/distribution.dtd">
<destinations>
<foreach>
<file id="DEST1" name="\temp\&<rpt_name>.pdf" format="pdf" instance="this">
<include src="report"/>
</file>
</foreach>
</destinations>
rpt_name will be a field of the same name in the report. Set this field in the main query in the data model, perhaps using a sequence and sysdate in your case. You will also need to set the Repeat On property on the Main Section in Paper Layout to the name of the group that this field is in.
Then you just need to add the following parameters to the URL you use to call the report:
DISTRIBUTE=yes&DESTINATION=$ORACLE_HOME/reports/distribution/filename.xml
With Destination being the name and location of the distribution XML file.
The reports server then uses the XML file to control the output of the report.
Cheers,
Toby.
