FrameMaker product demonstration + Q&A sessions?

Does Adobe offer product demonstrations for prospective buyers?  I work with a small team writing policies and procedures for a much larger and complex group, and we're exploring more efficient tools for document creation, and management.  Currently we're using Word, and whenever a large change takes place in the industry, we're forced to update multiple documents which contain overlapping information.  We've got no prior experience using technical writing software, and we'd like a demonstration of the capabilities of FrameMaker, and, in particular, it's single-source publishing functionality.

i believe they do for large deployments, but their user base is pretty extensive so most perspective clients have rely on one of the following:

  • Product view in DP session

    Hello
In the SNP94 I use the characteristic locationproduct in the shuffler. With a right click I can show me the product view (via Shuffler).
I want to use this function in a DP session, but how I define ja characteristi combination locationproduct for the shuffler?
    Thanks, sven

    Dear Sven,
As far as I know there is no direct answer for it.
But still you can view the SNP transaction data from the DP planning book.
This may require lot of vaildations and Coding (ABAP/Macro).
    Thanks,
    Siva.

  • From FrameMaker Product Management

We do look at the forum posts from time to time. More so during product planning phases. The inputs received on the forums is a valuable source of information for us.
We also try to have direct communication with experienced FrameMaker users. We are currently in the planning phase for the future versions of FrameMaker. We would really appreciate if FrameMaker users can take out some time to share their ideas and wishlist with us.
We would prefer to receive a prioritised list of 5 to 10 features (not more than 10). And also a short description for each feature. Based on your requests we might want to schedule a call and discuss your ideas. Some information about yourself and your organisation would help us see your requests in the correct perspective. You can post your list of prioritised features on this forum, or send it to me directly ([email protected]). I understand that many of you have posted multiple requests in the past. It would be helpful if you resend your prioritised wishlist.
Thank you for your continued support.

b Fix the ever-lovin' memory leak!
It's getting beyond tiresome to have to restart the program four or five times a day because "FrameMaker has experienced a serious problem and must quit"!!!!! There must be two hundred .recover. files hiding on my hard drives.
Move the spellcheck dialog out of the way (or, better, shift the text window) so we can see the suspected misspelling in context. Hiding the highlighted string with the dialog (even another one unconnected to the spellchecking task) is torture.
Some keyboard-driven means of getting into and out of the dialogs\toolbars. When using, e.g., the Paragraph Designer, it would be much easier to Shift+Tab back to the main doc window. Ctrl+M is great for getting _into_ it, but it's a mouse-driven world to get out. Being able to move among various toolbar/dialogs without going to the mouse would be very useful.
Drop Caps at the beginning of a 'graf. The current anchored frame method is tedious, and it just doesn't work very well for the material I deal with.
I have copied a few of Tim Murray's list here because I really like them, in addition to my own footnote and anchored frame requests (q.v. supra). I've flagged his suggestions: "¶", my comments have no flag.
¶ Allow forced-justify of the last line of a paragraph.
I've torn out so much hair trying to work around this (never successfully, btw)!
¶ Don't consider the space at the end of a line as a character when determining positioning.
This has always been a puzzle. I leave non-mandatory space at the end of each 'graf in case I want to add more text later or join two 'grafs. This "feature" often drives a new blank, line between 'grafs. Odd.
¶ If you type Alt+0039, you should get a straight single quote and 0034 should give you the straight double quote.
    b Feet'n'inches, minutes'n'seconds are all straight quotes.
So it's "turn off smart quotes, enter character(s), turn smart quote back on" or the esc sequences. Dumb smart quotes would be very nice. It would even be nice if Ctl+z reversed the smartness, as it does in MS Word. I could handle two keystrokes for the job, but as it is, we waste a lot of time keeping things straight (so to speak).
¶ Wider fields and dialogs. The good news: A fellow named Klaus Daube has created a modified fmdlg.dll for Windows that has nice wide fields for the Resize Selected Column dialog box. You can download it at http://www.daube.ch/docu/fmaker20.html.
    Thanks, Tim, this is great!!
Adobe should include this directly in the application. Does it also work (I'm not able to try it right now) for the next issue you raise:
¶ Show us the path. Some dialogs that show paths to files chop the path down to next to nothing. Show us the whole path, start to finish, and let it wrap when needed.
Oh, yeah!!! That's really old technology.
b The same thing goes for cross references.
It's often difficult to tell which of similar strings I am trying to catch when all I can see is forty characters.
¶ More keyboard support in dialog box lists; Shift+ and Ctrl+click. In the "Set Up Table of Contents" for example, pressing a letter should jump you to an item in the list. Some dialogs do, some to not. Further, you can't Shift+click or Ctrl+click either, and the up/down arrow keys don't work.
I, too, am a rodentophobe. Being left-handed may be a part of it, but having to use the mouse to do anything more complex than bringing up a designer just wastes too much time and effort. Keyboard short cuts (preferably that do not involve seven key strokes) are the best way to go.
¶ Do dialog tabs differently. Guess what you can't do? You can't change tabs by pressing Ctrl+Tab!
Once more, the mouse is vermin, and should be avoided any time possible.
    ¶ Quick outline view.
Again, this would make life so much easier.

  • Is there a way to make the quality of quicktime player better. when I take a screen movie of a demonstration video the quality when exporting to final cut is poor???

is there a way usinig quick time player when recording a screen movie of product demonstration better quiality?

FCE works in standardized broadcast frame sizes and frame rates. If your screen recording is not exactly the same pixel dimensions and frame rate as the sequence you are editing in, FCE will try to force it to fit, and that forcing may distort and reduce the apparent quality of your recording.
Have you tried to render your clips on the sequence?
Most people that are creating tutorials, etc. use dedicated software. If you have to do this a lot, then you might want to consider software such as ScreenFlow, which consolidates screen recording, editing/manipulating of the screen recording, and re-compression of your project for delivery in one application.

Does the trial download include this wonderful patch #11.0.2?  If not would I be able to patch the trial version if I decide to download and try it on my machine?
i don't have framework on my system yet but would like to try it to see what it can do for me.  I hope it doesn't go on the cloud soon now that we know FBI and CIA are trawling the major players (M$, google and Facebook to name the few) to mine data for their very big database for the entire planet.

  • Differences between cookies and sessions

    Hi there,
I want to learn the differences between sessions and cookies in PHP.Please help me.
Please let me know if there any video demonstrations that explain sessions and cookies.
    Thanks in advance.

Cookies and server side sessions are related in that they are both ways to persist data. This is required because of the fact that http is a stateless protocol, meaning that each request and response are independent transactions. Cookies are stored on the client. You might use them to store the contents of a shopping cart, or a user login id for a particular site. Or you could store a setting so that the user is automatically logged in, similar to what occurs here in the adobe site / forums. You can set various options for when cookies expire. Cookies that persist when the browser is closed are store in files, otherwise they could be store in memory only. Cookies can be created using either client or server side code.
Server side sessions are created on the server with a server side scripting language. A session id is generated and stored as a token on the client (in an in memory cookie) so that the server can track requests from the same originating client. Session variables are ways to store data related to the session on the server. Sessions use server resources which is why you should only use them when necessary and destroy them when done. When the session is destroyed, the session variables are gone so if you want to keep them for later you can store them in a database or store them in a cookie.

  • Duplicate sessions with dbms_session.reset_package

    Hi
In our production instance so many sessions are running with the following package, can anyone please tell this is for what? and why its running such long time, it is showing as ACTIVE status however the last cpu call is 1 month before.
    dbms_session.reset_package
Can anyone please guide me why there is many duplications in this sessions.

dbms_session.reset_package is used to reset package states, you will see this call if you are using a stateless application. What is the query you use to see the statuses of these sessions?

  • Any solutions for Session Hijacking Mitigation?

Has any implemented countermeasures against session hijacking for ATG web applications? If so, can you share your approach?
I've been looking at this periodically for a while. Ever since the fire sheep add-on came out for firefox, session hijacking has the tinker toy of every high schooler that wants to try his or her hand at hacking (the bad kind).
I opened an issue with Oracle support, but they indicated that they have nothing to offer. The product doesn't include session hijacking countermeasures. They also indicated that they have no sample or reference implementation for any mitigation. I haven't checked WebLogic to see whether any countermeasures are included with it, but nothing has come up during my searches.
So what are the rest of you doing? Going pure SSL and paying the performance penalty? Ignoring the issue?
At a minimum, I'd been considering just moving the site to SSL only pages. But that has a lot of negatives, particularly for consumers using Internet Explorer to browse the site. Even with SPDY, since IE has no committed plan to uptake the protocol. And then I have to start paying for premium services from third parties, like the enterprise license for the use of Google maps.
If we're going to continue to have a mixture of HTTP and HTTPS pages on a site, then several measures come to mind ...
    1. We have to re-authenticate the consumer each time that s/he enters a sensitive page or section of pages. Checkout, my account, etc. That's not hard, but it's also not out of the box on ATG. (At least, it wasn't prior to release 10. I haven't validated that on the latest release.)
    2. We have to change the session token frequently.
    3. We have to avoid including the jsessionid in the URL.
    4. Cookies must have secure and HTTPOnly flags set.
    5. Sensitive data must never be written to browser local storage, even if encrypted.
What else? Maybe if we can define a complete solution, we can share pieces to bring together an implementation.
    Thanks!
    Mark

    Mark,
I think that purely going on HTTPS/SSL can probably be the best way to rule out any possibility of firesheep like sniffing. I guess you would have already gone through with these OWASP resources on the topic:
    https://www.owasp.org/index.php/Top_10_2010-A9-Insufficient_Transport_Layer_Protection
    https://www.owasp.org/index.php/Cross-Site_Request_Forgery_%28CSRF%29_Prevention_Cheat_Sheet
Form ATG standpoint, I know of one countermeasure which is provided OOB in ATG but it is targeted more towards cross-site scripting attacks. You may still want to consider it for including in your list. It involve setting the "requiresSessionConfirmation" attribute on the applicable <dsp:form> or <dsp:a> tag. When requiresSessionConfirmation is set to true in those tags, an additional dynSessConf parameter is included in the HTTP request. Its value is randomly set based on the current session-id and can be different each time server's response containing tag output is sent to the browser. The DAFDropletEventServlet in the ATG servlet pipeline then validates this dynSessConf value in the incoming request from the form or an anchor.
Another related point is the usage of <%=request.getRequestURI()%> commonly used in the ATG form action attribute. Instead of simply using this I think it would be better to escape the output if it contains other parameters and some ids using ATG's ServletUtils as:
    <%=atg.servlet.ServletUtil.escapeURLString(request.getRequestURI())%>
Apart from these ATG specific pieces, one more approach can be to store a session variable that contains user's IP, user-agent etc. or may be a hash of all these and then check it in a filter for each request. Although it may not be a perfect solution but can help to some extent.
    Thanks.

  • Framemaker color definitions--New

Okay. I am bewildered. I haven't done much with Frame and color, so when my company asked me to set up a 4C template, I figured I would give it a try. Here's the problem.
I need an orange color defined as M80, Y100, as defined in InDesign. When I use these values in Frame's color definition dialog box, the color is not correct (way too bright) on the display, nor does it print to PDF correctly. When I examine the color with Acrobat's Print Production preview, I get M92, Y100.
Okay, I know Frame is really an RGB-based program, so I went into Photoshop to get the equivalent RGB definition, which is R241, G90, B34. Well, Frame doesn't allow RGB numbers greater than 100%, so there's no way to enter these values.
I am stumped. I get the same results with Frame 7.1, Frame 8, Acrobat 7, and Acrobat 9. I print to a .ps file and then use Distiller to create the PDF, leaving colors unchanged. The same color outputs correctly from Photoshop.
Years ago I did some color work in Frame and don't recall having these problems.
    Any suggestions?

    Sue,
You also need to make an adjustment in a maker.ini setting that
affects how FM renders colours on output.
Find the entry for GetLibraryColorRGBFromCMYK in the [Preferences]
    section.
    Set it to: GetLibraryColorRGBFromCMYK=None
For more detailed info about this see:
    http://www.techknowledgecorp.com/help/color.html at Tim Murray's site.
This info was originally posted by Mike Hardy a couple of years ago on
this site, but it's scrolled off now. Here's the original posting
    content:
    +++++++++++++++++++++
This post gives all the information I know about using colors in
    FrameMaker
under Windows. It does not cover the use of separations. It instead
describes display, and direct output to color devices such as printers
    including creating PDFs.
    Color models
    =====================================
FrameMaker supports three different color models:
    - CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key)
    - RGB (Red, Green, Blue)
    - HLS (Hue, Light, Saturation).
FrameMaker uses an algorithm to convert between each of these color
    models.
    For example:
    RGB to CMYK:
    C = max(R, G, B) - R
    M = max(R, G, B) - G
    Y = max(R, G, B) - B
    K = 100 - max(R, G, B)
    CMYK to RGB:
    R = min(100 - K - C, 0)
    G = min(100 - K - M, 0)
    B = min(100 - K - Y, 0)
    Color output
    =====================================
Like most Windows applications, FrameMaker uses the Windows graphics
    device
interface (GDI) for its output. The GDI handles both display and
    printer
    output.
Unfortunately, the GDI only supports the RGB color model. Any colors
    that
are defined in other color models are therefore converted to RGB for
    output
    (see below).
The only exception to this is Encapsulated PostScript (EPS). When you
    print
to a PostScript printer, or distill a PDF, the EPS is inserted
    unchanged
into the PostScript. So any CMYK colors in the EPS get printed
    unchanged.
This is the only way to output a CMYK color from FrameMaker under
    Windows.
(Note that if you instead print to a non-PostScript printer, any EPS
    files
are output using their preview bitmap, in RGB.)
    Types of color in FrameMaker
    =====================================
There are two types of color in FrameMaker:
    - those defined by component values that you type in
    - those defined by choosing a named ink from a color library.
    FrameMaker handles these differently.
If you type in the component values
FrameMaker stores the color in the document as CMYK. If the color was
    not
defined as CMYK, FrameMaker uses its own conversion algorithm. So the
    CMYK
values that are stored are the same values that you see in the CMYK
    view of
    the Color Definitions dialog.
FrameMaker outputs the color as RGB. If the color was not defined as
    RGB,
FrameMaker uses its own conversion algorithm. So the RGB values that
    are
output are the same values that you see in the RGB view of the Color
    Definitions dialog.
If you choose the color from a library
FrameMaker also supports color libraries that contain named inks.
    Almost all
libraries specify both CMYK and RGB values for each ink. The important
    thing
is that the mapping between the CMYK and RGB values can be very
    different to
    the algorithm that FrameMaker uses.
FrameMaker stores the color in the document as the color library and
    ink
name. It also stores CMYK values for the color, for backup. When
    FrameMaker
opens the document, it looks for the color library and ink name, first
    in a
    cache, then on disk:
    - if it finds the color library and ink, it reads the CMYK and RGB
    values
for the ink from the color library
    - if it doesn't find the color library or ink, it instead uses the
    CMYK
values that are stored in the document, exactly as if you'd typed them
    in
(see "If you type in the component values" above).
FrameMaker outputs the ink as RGB. It can use:
    - the RGB values for the ink that are stored in the library
    - the CMYK values for the ink that are stored in the library,
    converted to
    RGB using its own algorithm.
This depends on the output device that FrameMaker is using, and the
GetLibraryColorRGBFromCMYK setting in the maker.ini file:
    - If GetLibraryColorRGBFromCMYK is set to "Screen", FrameMaker does
    screen
output by converting the CMYK values for the ink to RGB. For printer
    output,
it instead uses the RGB values for the ink.
    - If GetLibraryColorRGBFromCMYK is set to "Printing", FrameMaker does
printer and PDF output by converting the CMYK values for the ink to
    RGB. For
screen output, it instead uses the RGB values for the ink.
    - If GetLibraryColorRGBFromCMYK is set to "Printing&Screen",
    FrameMaker does
all output by converting the CMYK values for the ink to RGB. It never
    uses
the RGB values for the ink.
    - If GetLibraryColorRGBFromCMYK is set to "None", FrameMaker never
    uses the
CMYK values for the ink. It does all output using the RGB values for
    the ink.
For the most WYSIWYG results with the predefined libraries, I'd
    suggest
setting GetLibraryColorRGBFromCMYK to "None". This means that the RGB
    values
in the color library get used for the screen - and they're probably
    the most
faithful colors for this. The same RGB color will be printed, giving
    you the
same color mismatches that you get for most other Windows
    applications. And
you will often find that the RGB to CMYK conversion of your output
    device
will give more faithful results than FrameMaker's own conversion.
    Defining your own libraries
    =====================================
Finally, note that you can define your own libraries. From the online
    "Customizing FrameMaker" manual:
"ColorLib [in maker.ini] specifies the folder that contains color
    library
files. These files are read in at startup and appear in the Color
    Libraries
pop-up menu in the Color Definitions dialog box. You can add any
    library
file formatted in the ASCII Color Format (.acf), version 2.1 or
    earlier, or
in the Binary Color Format (.bcf), version 2.0. You can't use a
    FrameMaker
product to save a .bcf library file."
A web search might reveal details of these file formats, but if not,
    the
ASCII one is pretty obvious. Here's a file I put together:
    ACF 1.0
    My Color Library
    LibraryVersion: 1.0
Copyright: © 2005 Mike Hardy. All rights reserved.
    AboutMessage: Colors for my company
    Names: Partial
    Rows: 4
    Columns: 4
    Entries: 2
    Prefix:
    Suffix:
    Type: Process
    Models: CMYK RGB
    PreferredModel: RGB
    Data:
    0 0.25 0.5 0.25
    65535 32768 0
    Burnt Orange
    0.5 0.25 0 0.25
    0 32768 65535
    French Blue
You can then control exactly what RGB values FrameMaker uses for
    display and
    printing:
    - determine the RGB values that you want to use for display, and note
    down
    the RGB values
    - determine the RGB values that you want to use for printing, perhaps
    by
trial and error in another application
    - set the FrameMaker Color Definitions dialog to your RGB values for
printing, then change to the CMYK color model, and note down the
    "equivalent" CMYK values
    - define your own color library
    - in your color library, define an ink with the RGB values you noted
    for
display, and the CMYK values you noted for printing
    - set GetLibraryColorRGBFromCMYK to "Printing"
This doesn't get you CMYK output, but it's the best you can do under
Windows. Note, however, that setting GetLibraryColorRGBFromCMYK to
"Printing" might not give such good results with the predefined color
    libraries (see above).

  • Oracle User Group in Germany

    Hello,
I just came back from the DOAG (German Oracle User Group)
conference. HTML db seems to be much more popular than I
thought - and that's good. There were no free chairs in the
room at all. People were sitting on the floor.
Tomorrow is the second day. There are at least three or
four topics related to HTML db. Happy to have a chance to
    attend the courses.
More and more people are starting to realize and admit
than HTML db is much, much more than just a replacement
for Access and Excel. It is making competition to Oracle
own products that have this heavy aura of "serious"
    programming interfaces (J2EE, Portal,
...). People are using it with SAP, BAAN or standalone.
I saw the roadmap for HTML db. Looks quite promising. If
only the half of the planned features appear in the next
version it will become unbeatable (and I was told it is
    unbreakable?).
They demonstrated the new "session state protection"
feature using checksum. This was one of the bigger issues.
Now, it doesn't seem to be an issue any more.
    Denes Kubicek

    Denes,
Thanks for posting this update from DOAG. Unfortunately, I was unable to make it.
