Free Transform in Illustrator?
Hi, I have a problem. I can`t find how to free transform in Illustrator like in Photoshop.
Here is an example: I want to put a letter on all sides of an isometric cube. So I have to free transform the letter without any perspective effect.
Can someone help me? It seems to be easy to do this but I really can`t find the perfect option.
thinking about it, envelope distort would probably be easiest for your case:

Free Transform in Illustrator CS4
Hello,
I'm using CS4 and am having trouble with the free distort tool.
I didn't even know it existed until I googled it and have always instead pasted what I wanted into PS, rasterized it, distorted it, then pasted it back into illustrator and traced it with the new perspective.
I'm trying to follow this tutorial-
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Illustrator/14.0/WS714a382cdf7d304e7e07d0100196cbc5f-646da.htm l
However, when I select my object(s), then use the free transform, all it does it change the whole size as if i'm using the resize tool.
I tried selecting all of the objects as individuals, putting them in a group, and even making the whole thing into (1) large compound path and it's still doing the same thing every time.
Holding the various keys it mentions do nothing except change the point at which the resize is occuring (from lower right to center and so on)
Using the free distort tool under effects does not change where my anchor points are. Ideally, I'd like to move those as well while free transforming, though perhaps I'm just wishing the program could do more than it can?
Hopefully someone can help me do what I want.
I'd like to go from point A to point B as shown here-
http://i44.tinypic.com/msgj75.jpg
but without the use of pasting into photoshop to do it.
Thanks!Okay, so by holding the shift/ctrl/alt option, I was able to start seeing perspective distorting with your help. However it always moves (2) handles (right or left) depending on which side I'm on. Am I correct in assuming that that's just the way that tool works unless I use free distort in effects? I want a literal FREE transformation like in PS to achieve the look as I've shown it, and have all of my anchor points move as well.

Illustrator CC Free Transform not Snapping to Guides, No Smart Guides
The Free Transform tool in Illustrator CC won't snap to Guides, and Smart Guides don't seem to work either.
I have all the options checked in Preferences > Smart Guides > Display Options and the Snapping Tolerance turned way up.
In CS6, Free Transform with Smart Guides allowed you to snap to paths, points, alignments and guides.
Also: Any way to hide/minimize the Free Transform popup?James,
Depending on the urgency of your plight, you may await some cleverer suggestions, or read on.
When seems to be wrong for no apparent reason, and it is not limited to certain (existing) documents, you may consider the following (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps, unless someone comes up with a cleverer suggestion.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file; 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences:
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder Other options (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
Even more seriously, you may:
6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

I am using Illustrator CS6 (Mac). I am using free transform tool. Why can't I use Shift Option Command to distort in perspective?
hong,
You need to ClickDrag just a tiny bit, then apply the Shift Option Command. -
CS3 Illustrator and Free Transform Tool
I have a problem with the function Free Transform Tool in Illustrator to OS X. After clicking on the icon Free Transform Tool object can become distorted. I got command key, I'm with the cursor in the corner, but does not work. Tried the instructions here: http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/Illustrator/13.0/help.html?content=WS714a382cdf7d304e7e07 d0100196cbc5f-646d.html, but it also does not work. By someone he did not know where could be the problem? Thanks a lot.
Use Effect>3D>Rotate to rotate the PNG into a perspective plane. It is not as accurate as the distortion mesh method, but it might work for you.
Alternatively, you can use the distortion mesh method and edit the mesh with the mesh tool directly. It is tedious because you'll have o move the anchor points and direction points separately (The free transform tool does this for you in one step).
A third option is to download the 30-day free trial of AICS4. You can make the distortion then open the file in CS3.
I don't have CS4 either and I am forced to keep 2 versions of Illustrator on my machine because of this bug.
Adobe should not force users to upgrade, just to get a bug fix. -
Free transform tool in Illustrator?
I have drawn a set of boxes, copy and pasted them. I now want to make them look like they vanish into the distance.
So I want to select the free transform tool then hold ctrl, sft, & Alt to make them warp.
Why wont it do it on multiple items?In the original file, the boxes are trimmed (pathfinder tool) out of one solid shape. I then deleted the outside to leave the individual boxes, so if I select one box now they are all selected as they are cut out of one shape.
Allreet,
If you really care to get to the bottom of this, you need to describe EXACTLY the steps you performed, and not withold pertinent information preventing anyone from replicating your situtation. The above description makes no sense, but it suggests there is more going on your file than just a few simple paths, which may very well have a bearing on the Free Transform tool seeming to fail. (It's really annoying when someone posts a question resulting in a long thread with others trying to help, only to find that pertinent information has been witheld.)
Why did you use a Pathfinder, and EXACTLY which Pathfinder did you use? (Trim does not do what you describe.) What was the "solid shape"? What was its content, if any? What EXACTLY were the other objects involved, and how many? Which were selected when you applied the Pathfinder? Did you Expand the Pathfinder, or is it still a live effect? Are there any raster images involved in this at all?
HR,
Neither of your suggested alternate methods (FreeDistort Effect or Warp Envelope) equate to the so-called perspective distortion of the Free Transform Tool. Both of those methods simply distort the content into a "wedge" envelope. The Free Transform Tool logrithmically moves/scales anchorpoints toward/away from the so-called "vanishing point."
You can see the difference by comparing the results when performed on a grid:
Even the "perspective trick" of the Free Distort tool alone does not result in convincing perspective if not followed by other moves. Note that in the top right image, the square "floor tiles" have become grossly stretched. There is no way that the supposedly square tiles, viewed at an angle, would appear taller than their width; quite the opposite would be the case. A second vertical scaling move is required.
None of the above nor other more tedious workarounds in Illustrator come even close to the practicality and utility of the dedicated Perspective Grid toolset built many years ago into FreeHand. It was a true ground-breaking innovation in 2D vector drawing programs; the first-ever real example of how the interface in mainstream Bezier drawing programs could break free of their lamely pervasive vertical/horizontal orientation and provide an environment in which an illustrator is allowed to think like an illustrator, instead of having to continually devise workarounds to achieve what was intuitively done on paper for centuries before these lame flat-design softwares (which is all they really are) appeared.
Adobe, of course, has simply removed this ground-breaking innovation from the market. There is nothing in Illustrator nor in any of the other mainstream Bezier drawing programs that even comes close to it. Adobe has set practical 2D vector drawing development backward by 10 years.

Illustrator CC Free Transform and Snapping
It seems that in CC the Free Transform tool does not snap to grid when resizing (for example) a rectangle. If I have "Snap to Grid" turned on, it only is taking effect with new objects getting drawn. Am I understanding this correctly? If I draw a rectangle, and want to reshape/resize it to fit the grid, how do I do this? It's a bit embarrassing asking this question, but CC seems to have changed some things from CS6.
I may have found a solution.
I called a buddy of mine to help tackle this with me.
Turns out, I'm trained to use the Free Transform tool in order to resize objects (and this has always worked in the past, that's what I've always done...hit the "E" key and then resize the object).
NOW, you're not supposed to use the Free Transform tool for precise snapping (which, I...I don't even have words for, because there's no reason to remove the actual option of wanting a precise move (resize) to be made...so dumb).
In order to precisely resize objects (with Smart Guides on), you must first make sure you are showing your bounding box (an option I previously had hidden 95% of the time because I hated looking at it). So View > Show Bounding Box. Then, with your regular ol' Selection Tool (V), you select the object, then hover over the anchor point and it will allow you to resize with the Smart Guides (and it works as well as it USED to work).
The stupid thing is this works exactly the same way as the Free Transform tool...so, I guess, the Free Transform tool is now relegated to performing transforms only when you want to ignore precision altogether (which for me...is never). I'd like a refund for that portion of the software that I'm paying for...or something. I don't get it.
Anyway, overly long story short. Turn on your bounding box, use your selection tool to resize (instead of hitting E and using the free transform tool) and your resizes/transforms will align to your grids, guides and in accordance with the smart guides.

Illustrator Bonding Box or Free Transform Encounter-Unknown Error PARM
Hi,
I'm working in CS5 illustrtor on a Mac the error message I keep getting when trying to scale a Bounding box is "Bounding Box or Free Transform encountered an unknown error:" PARM
Please help! I really don't know what to do. I saw some replys on this but I don't really understand exactly what to do. The statement was that it might be corrupted and need to restart and hold down some buttons on restart? Does that mean when I start up the machine or the program, am I to hold down cmd+opt+shift? I am assuming that crl+opt+shift is for a pc? Also I'm not sure about moving the folder, what's that all about, it stated something like: illy is not to be used or should be off, something like that I don't remember exactly. I need a little bit more information on all this…I'm kind of learning all this and I would like a clarification or instruction on this, if possible. Thanks so much for your help.
lyndeeThanks Scott,
Your advice did the Trick! Just wondering and assuming…if I have this kind of problem in any of the other Adobe CS5 programs, this would work as well?…Yes?
Thanks again for your time to answer my questions.

No additional toolbar free transform tool in Illustrator CC
i cannot find the small additional tool bar (like here http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ctgGM2-J8Sw#t=69s) after i select the free transform tool. and of course the transformations do not work the way they are supposed to.
please help!
thx
jj,
You may also consider two other possibilities or similar.
One is a corruption of preference settings. The following is a list of things to try when something is wrong (number 5) on the list is least likely).
You may have been through 1) and 2) already.
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer;
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy);
Even more seriously, you may: 6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.
http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html
The other is that the little tool bar is of screen; this can especially happen in connexion with dual monitors. You may try to increase the monitor reolution and see whether it turns up somewhere out there, and if it does, you may drag it in and reduce the monitor resolution again. It may create a bit of a mess to clear up. -

Can I Free Transform/Distort An Object Like Photoshop?
I need to distort an object much the way one would in Photoshop with Free Transform - Distort. That's the one where you can drag the corners wherever it suits your fancy.
The closest thing in Illustrator I can find is Effect - Distort & Transform - Free Distort. But this is a lot tougher because I just get a tiny picture of a grid; you distort the corners, and hope for the best.
Is there a way in Illustrator that will allow me to do this with the actual object?
Thanks.There's the Free Transform Tool.
Click a corner then hold down Command/Ctrl, Option/Alt, and shift then move the mouse to allow free transformations. The click-modifier-move order is important. -
Photoshop CS4 Crash Free Transform Vector Objects
Hello!
I've a consistent ad recurring error and I wanted to see if anyone else has it.
The bug happens when I place a vector smart object either an Illustrator file, or pasting from InDesign.
I place the object, and confirm.
Then, when I hit "command t" to free-transform, Photoshop hangs for a second and then crashes.
It happens every time, on every type of Photoshop file, on any type of vector content.
I can place an EPS file, and the error does not occur.
Any suggestions?I'm having the same thing happen with CS4 11.0 (I was running 11.0.1 before the crash),
Anytime I hit the transform command tit hangs then freezes... but never recovers. It crashes the whole system and I need to reboot.
Intel iMac, running OS X 10.5.7
I've trashed preferences, repaired permissions and reinstalled Photoshop (not the entire creative suite).
I used to have CS3, but it's been uninstalled but I'm not pointing the software to any other plugins... so I'm lost.
Any ideas? -
Free Transform Rotation Issue - Layer rotates/moves by itself after clicking on it?
Hey all. Since the last update, I have been experiencing this weird issue while using Free Transform. Sometimes, after I invoke Free Transform and then click on the layer I am transforming, it seems to rotate by itself. Usually clockwise. It happens really quickly. It's almost like my mouse cursor is off center when I click on the layer and the it's like the layer rotates to match the location of my cursor. It's so weird and quite difficult to describe. I have also experienced the layer moving quickly to the right after clicking on it while in the Free Transform state. I have tried 2 different mice and experienced the issue on both of them. I have also tried different mousing surfaces and experienced the same thing. It doesn't happen every time but just sometimes. It started doing it since the latest update. It's really annoying. Just wondering if anyone else has this issue.

CS6 Free Transform ctrl drag not working properly
Anybody on this ...
When I use the free transform tool crtr-T and use the ctrl drag button, the corners do not extend properly. It extends universally as aposed to a distorted corner-pull. I uninstalled CS6 and reinstalled still getting the same result. Any help would be greatly appreciated...
ThanksWhat conroy wrote convert a smart object layer to a smart object layer may seem a bit strange but he is correct. All smart object layers are not created equal they may contain many types of smart objects. An illustrator vector file placed in can most likely be reopened in illustrator by double clicking on the layers smart icon in the layers palette and transform the vector object in illustrator and when saved in illustrator the embedded smart object will be updated to reflect the changes made in illustrator. If you encapsulate a VSO into a Smart Object when you transform the resulting smart object layer it will be transformed like a raster layer using interpolation like all Smart Object layers are transformed. If you want to transform a layer that contain vector graphics using vector graphics you need to correct tools. Transform I would think would only transform Vector Shape Layer using vectors and change Text layer by changing font size all other layer types would be interpolated. An embedded smart object the contains many Photoshop layers some which are text and vector layers like a places PSD file may be transform better using Photoshop Image Size and then transforming the resulting updated smart object layer if your increasing the layers size.

Applying identical free transform to second object?
Please excuse my lack of techinical knowledge, I am trying to learn my way through AI via trial & error since I don't have time to read a book or so.
I think I understand what paths/anchors are used for and how basic perspective transform works (holding cmd/control and perhaps option and/or shift). I have an object that has already been distorted via Free Transform so that the perspective is changed. I have a logo I would like to add onto the surface of the object.
My assumption is to use Free Distort again, but how to mimick the same distortions to the correct angles? I have experimented with grabbing corners of the bounding box and trying to snap them to corresponding anchor points of the background perspective shape...but it's not really working out.
What am I missing?
I've tried searching for perspective and free transform tool tutorials, but they mostly just show how to distort into a new perspective but not how to 'mimick' or align to an existing perspective.
Thanks!You did that the wrong way you would first position that which you wish to map to the relative position of the object it is being mapped to then group
the two and then use the free transform.
The other way is to use the #D Effect's Rotate command and rotate and give it some perspective within the dialog. Then you can turn your art that you wish to map into a symbol which then can be mapped by going back to the effect by accessing it in the appearance panel which will allow you to bring up the 3D Rotate Effect dialog.
You then click on Map Art button and then select the surface you need to map the art to and then select from the drop down the symbol you made of your art and you can see liv the preview on your art.
You would actually make the art into a symbol before apply the 3d effect but I wanted you to see that you can keep the effect live and even after you save a close the art you can still remove or remap different art.
Now most important is that this is Illustrator and you are not going to learn it by trial and error and so it is important for you to get a book like Mordy Golding's Real World Illustrator. For certain Mordy writes much better than probably any of us when it comes to methods, techniques and the workings and fundamentals of Illustrator and the other Adobe programs. Otherwise you are going to be very limited in what you ca do and the amount of time you spend trying to figure it out is going to be a lot more than you will spend reading Mordy's book.
The really good thing about the book is that is written in a way so that it is one fast reading and easy to retain.
Do yourself a big favor and read the book.
After all this is Illustrator and not an easy program to learn.
