Freezing G5Quad, Ran Hardware test, result DIMM Error

Hi,
I have worked with macs for many years and I had never experienced such a problem. I have 2 Quads, one with 6 Gigs RAM and the other 3 Gigs. The one with 3 started freezing up randomly, sometimes during startup, sometimes after start up, or just after opening a program. The mouse would just freez. I could not do anything. Then I ran Hardware test and it came up with a DIMM error. it said DIMM J9600 had a problem, so I changed the possitions of my RAM and now it is working fine.
What I would like to know is how does a DIMM go bad. I had not opened my G5 for at least 4 months and it just happened from one day to the next. It also currupted my system disc, which I was only able to fix taking it out from the computer and putting it into my other quad and running Disc Warrior, which took more than two hours to fix.
Any ideas what must have happened???
Thanks, and sorry for such a long explanation.

Well - if you are now not getting the RAM error after switching slots, it seems possible that there was nothing wrong with the RAM and it was re-seating the RAM that fixed it.
Although the RAM is a tight fit in the slot, there are many small contacts and any contamination can cause problems - which re-seating can fix.
As you don't report getting the conventional RAM problem warning - bottom of the page here
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302527
it could even be an intermittent fault, so it might be worth running the extended RAM tests - Memtest/Rember - linked-to here

  • Blue Screening - after rebuild ran hardware test - results

    Hi All
I just ended up with this error message. Have recently rebuilt again after numerous bluescreen / bootfail occurrences.
My warranty is up but I'm mostly curious to know if replacing the hard drive would likely 'solve' my problems.
All other tests were successful. Laptop is 18 months old and admittedly has had relatively heavy hard drive usage next to normal home laptops (saving, alterations, statistical analysis files, repetitive partitioning to install ubuntu in serial etc).
    Thanks

I ran hardware test and error 4MOT/1/40000003: HDD-1322 came up. Anyone know what this is?

    Hi guys,
I have a similar problem, the numbers at the end of the error code change a bit, when i do the apple hardware test again ( I have an imac of early 2008, 2,66 GH). I have  2 GB Ram now, after one week ago one of the 2GB-Ram sticks "died") In fact, it was working quite much, then suddenly (i bought imac in june 2009) the ram stick was broken. The apple-support center told me its probably not a problem, but did not tell me what the error code means.  I have apple-care for 3 years, its a luck i did it, so they will take it and check carefully, but just after i insisted on the error. It seems they do not want to tell u what that could be....
Do u guys think the ram-stick was broken because the imac was too hot???

  • Ran Hardware test on 17" 10.5.6 Error Code 2STF/3/3:ATA-100ata-6-master came up @ mass storage run area.

Have a Powerbook G4 17" 1.57GHz BRV 4.8.4f1 Mem.1 GB HDr. ATA:3,ID:0, Ran HARDWARE Test 2.2 hit Mass Storage test area when Error Code 2STF/3/3:ATA-100ata-6-Master stopped test. Shut comp down by holding pwr button for 5 secs. Waited 20 minutes and restarted w/option button and ran test again hit Mass Storage and Error Code 2STF/8/ rest is same as previous error code. Something about Node pop up after running disk utility a few days ago. Comp is was running  very slow. Only change besides updates was Macdefender. Do I need to take it to be repaired at an Apple place? Thank you.

First, you need to remove macdefender, which is a scam program. Apple note http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4650 provides these instructions:
    Removal steps
Move or close the Scan Window.
Go to the Utilities folder in the Applications folder and launch Activity Monitor.
Choose All Processes from the pop up menu in the upper right corner of the window.
Under the Process Name column, look for the name of the app and click to select it; common app names include: MacDefender, MacSecurity or MacProtector.
Click the Quit Process button in the upper left corner of the window and select Quit.
    Quit Activity Monitor application.
    Open the Applications folder.
Locate the app ex. MacDefender, MacSecurity, MacProtector or other name.
Drag to Trash, and empty Trash.
Malware also installs a login item in your account in System Preferences. Removal of the login item is not necessary, but you can remove it by following the steps below.
Open System Preferences, select Accounts, then Login Items
Select the name of the app you removed in the steps above ex. MacDefender, MacSecurity, MacProtector
    Click the minus button
Now, after you do that, reboot your system. Bring up disk utillity and verify the disk. Preferred would be to boot from OS X on DVD or a Firewire backup, run Disk Utility and Repair Disk, but verify disk when Disk Utility is loaded from the hard drive should work. Write down any messages, like bad node or whatever.
If you get a message that the program exits with a failure, then there is a disk error that Disk Utility won't be able to fix. That could mean buying Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro to fix the error. Disk Warrior tends to be the disk fix program of choice. Depending on the error, it's possible that Disk Utility won't be able to fix the problem, in which case the fix is usually a new hard drive. Note, a new hard drive will be cheaper than Disk Warrior (at $95 or so).
Smart Utility from http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php will give you good insight into the condition of your hard drive, as it reports on your SMART sensors.

  • Anybody know what my hardware test result code means?

My Macbook Pro 15" has been hanging and crashing a lot lately (just after applecare expired too!), I did a clean install and upgraded to 10.6, did the usual disk first aid (even checked for viruses) and after nothing helped, I finally ran hardware test from the install dvd and received the following error: 4MOT/2/400000004: Left side -3286; I know 4MOT is the logic board, but does anybody have any ideas what the rest means?

    This is the counter-example:

my hardware test results was 4MOT/4/40000003:HDD-1323
I cant start computer the screen comes grey with apple logo.
Does any one know how to fix this preoblem with this?

That error shows that your hard drive fan motor is damaged. If you are not an expert user, take the Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get the hard drive replaced, as it would be dangerous for your hard drive to use your Mac (if you can use it).

  • 2007 MBP freezes, Ran hardware test got error code 4MEM/11/40000000:505c99b0 Help?

Hi all, my 2007 MBP freezes and requires me to hold power button to restart. It's happening somewhat frequently. ( installed new SSD and new battery in the last 2 months)
I ran the quick hardware test ( am running the extended one now) and recieve the following error code  4MEM/11/40000000:505c99b0
Hoped to squeeze another year or two out of this old warrior. Any ideas what this code might be?
    Thanks

This is a memory error of some sort. We don't have the Rosetta stone for these errors, so I don't know what the rest means.

  • PB 17" Hardware Test Result-Error Code 2STF/1/4

I have a 17" Powerbook G4 running OS X (10.4.7). Today I was online on a cable modem. I walked away from the computer and then heard a high pitched sound. I had the sound turned all the way off so it wasn't coming from anything normal. It seemed as though the sound was coming from my attached external speakers but apparently that wasn't the source of the sound. It appeared to be still online but then everything froze up. Then the computer turned itself off when I tried to quit the Firefox application.
I had trouble getting my Powerbook restarted and when it did restart it showed the blinking question mark. I ran the Hardware Test and came up with an error code. It showed an error detected in the mass storage. The code was 2STF/1/4. Apparently there is nothing I can do to fix this on my own? This being Saturday I guess I have no computer for the weekend and maybe for a while. Does anyone have an idea how serious this error code is?

    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi--
Does anyone have an idea how
    serious this error code is?
Based on the description of the sound you heard, and a Google search for the hardware error code, it sounds like your hard drive failed. My guess is that the high pitched sound you heard was either a bearing in the hard drive going (if they have such a thing), or the head scraping the surface of the drive (and thereby removing the magnetic media that holds the data).
One other thing that it might mean is that the hard drive controller chip, which is on the logic board, has failed. But that doesn't really explain the high pitched sound you heard (unless it was from the speakers, and was caused by an electrical failure on the logic board that leaked into the sound generating chip).
At this point, I think you need to have a technician look at the computer.
    good luck,
    charlie

  • 2008 iMac running beautifully untill recently. Screen glitches and freezing. Apple Hardware test showed error code  4MOT/2/40000004:ADD and I have not seen others with this code. Guessing it is a fan issue based on the ODD and HDD error codes

computer felt hot and while running apple hardware test the screen glitches covered the screen and it froze. Now computer wont boot up. Again AHT code is 4MOT/2/40000004:ADD and I have just seen ODD and HDD codes discussed on other threads. Those were hardrive or superdrive fans, so I am guessing this is a fan issue and then it fried by graphics card. Any help as to whether this is game over or worth repairing would be very appreciated.

You need to take it to your local Apple Store or AASP for a professional evaluation. Apple does not publish the codes from AHT, you can Google the code you got and see if you can determine what it means however the best method is to let a pro handle it.

  • Apple hardware test results means?

My older 20" imac intel crashes 1-4 times a day, freezes up, have to press power button to shut it down; ran apple hardware test twice and got these two alerts: apple hardware test 4MHD/2/40000004: 0x7c651f10     and   4MHD/2/40000004: 0x7ba72510;  before running AHT, had already run diskwarrior, disk utility, TTPro, and they all found nothing amiss.
    any ideas? much thanks.

I don't know what the errors mean but the symptoms could point to the memory. You've tried everything else how about removing one memory module at a time and rebooting to see if you can eliminate that possibility.
    Good luck, Rick.

  • Hardware Test results OK, but...

I added memory at a point before I began experiencing system freezes. Is it possible that something could be intermittently wrong with the memory, but the Apple Hardware Test doesn't catch it?

OK... Memtest ran all night in single-user mode and everything passed.
The reformatting a little over a week ago wiped Applejack, so I just reinstalled and ran it in full auto mode. It finished quickly and didn't reflect any abnormalities.
Apart from Applejack and Disk Warrior, which I bought because of the system freezes, there isn't any new software that would be conflicting. Nothing is in /Library/StartupItems except two folders for Pro Tools (which has been on my HD for several years without trouble) and a folder for Pace Support (iLok dongle). There is also nothing in my user (Admin) login items except iCalAlarmScheduler and System Events.
Again, the freezes (no error message is displayed) have occurred both while running various software and with nothing except the Finder running. Is there anything else I can try if another freeze occurs?

  • Extended Hardware Test Results

    Hi All
I have been having a lot of trouble lately (G5 1.8GhZ, 1GB RAM (2 x 512) 10.3.9) with kernel panics and freezes. I have fully reinstalled OS X but the problem remained. Eventually I ran the Extended Hardware Test (which took 45 mins) and I got the below error:
    2MEM/5/4:DIMM1/J4001
I took this to mean that one of my RAM modules is the problem, but, this is only a guess.
Can anybody shed light on what this error is and maybe how to resolve it?
    Many Thanks
    BB

Just to load the fodder, that is exactly what was happening on my 4 month old PowerBook Pro; (including all the same software/system troubleshooting) and I got a 4MEM/1/40000000 error code. (it was also causing my Win setup on Boot Camp to wig out -- even worse)
What I was looking for here (somewhere) is a quick online reference to the code breakdown to tell me which module/slot is bad (one is from Apple the other from 3rd party -- both should be covered)

  • Hardware test w/o errors

has anybody run the hardware test and come up without any errors? mine had 2. now apple is sending it back due to a MLB Failure.

I just ran it on mine w/no errors. I tried the normal one and the extended and nothing came up. Now for me apparently I do have the whine but it's only noticeable if it's very quiet and I put my ear against it. Opening and closing the mirror widget seems to take care of it. As for the heat issue, it's a tad bit warmer then my 800 mhz ibook. There's only two real problem I'm having with my wonderful MacBook Pro. One just some minor fit issues on the front left, upper left side near the inputs and that the left of the lid is not 100% flush. Two the backlight keys only light in the dark if the computer wakes from sleep. So overall nothing major that would hinder my enjoyment of this wonderful machine.

  • Hardware Test: Video Ram "error code 2NVD/1/4:119" G5 2.7 NVIDIA 6800 Ultra

Wondering if anyone has experienced this . . .
My G5 started displaying rows of chevron shaped artifacts a few weeks after upgrading to Leopard, Bought a used replacent card and it seemed to fix the problem for a couple of weeks then too started displaying the artifacts, ran the Hardware Test on both cards and both had Video Ram error code 2NVD/1/4:2119
I'am reluctant to buy yet another card untill I'am sure its not a Leopard Issue. any ideas?

I need to do more troubleshooting of my problem before I trying to reflash I think . . .
    the other day I had a friend install both my original card and the newly purchased "used" card in his G5 and he also got the error codes on both of them. Brought them home installed the replacement card reset the SMU and PRAM as I've done many times before and got the G5 up and running (after several reboots) no artifacts seemed to run perfectly for a couple of hours anyway when I tried restarting and then the problems returned, gets to the grey screen with the rows of artifacts then stops, screen goes black then the fans start slowly spooling up to max RPM (most likley from a kernel panic) logs show;
    "Apparent UniNorth Hang: AGP Status"
