Freezing on File Open

We are having a problem where everytime we select a file, the spinning beach ball of death appears for a long period of time. Eventually, you are allowed to open the file, but it is extremely frustrating to wait for 1 minute or more for every import or open...It happens both from within the file/open dialog in an application, and when you try to select and open a file in the finder. It seems to be better when we first start the computer up, and gets progressively worse as time goes on...
Help!
Arne

Are these files on your local drive or are they on a server somewhere? If it is a local drive have you set the drive to sleep? If so, it will take about 30 seconds for a drive to spin up before it can load the file you have requested. If it is a remote file and the drive is asleep when the file is requested it could easily take a minute or so for the entire process to complete itself, between waking and transferring.

  • Photoshop Freeze on File Open

I'm using Photoshop CS3 on Windows XP. When I try to open a file from File>Open the Window appears for a fraction of a second and then disappears. At that point Photoshop freezes. The Task Manager says it's still running, but everything is frozen. I can't click on minimize or close, none of the tool bar icons, nothing. I can create new files. I can use Browse to open files, or I can just drag them in from a folder. One of the plugins I was using would also freeze Photoshop ocne I pressed ok for the filter to apply. The plugin/filter was NvidiaTool's NormalMapFilter. Resetting the Prefs and/or deleting the .psp file seems to have fixed that.
I've deleted the .psp file. I've done the ctrl-shift-alt to resest the Prefs as well. I've switched my default printer. I deleted a printer I didn't use anymore.
    Any ideas what's causing it?

To test Mylenium's theory, do you get control again if you hit the Esc (escape) key?  That would be the equivalent to hitting the [Cancel] button on the File - Open prompt.  If not, an off-screen window is not the problem.
I believe you can clear up window positioning problems by resetting Photoshop's preferences...  Press and hold Control-Shift-Alt when first starting Photoshop from its menu entry or shortcut.  You have to be quick.

  • Mavericks freezing on file open/save

Having upgraded my iMac (24 inch mid 2007) to Mavericks several non Apple application that tries to open a file open/save dialogue box freezes when the dialogue is attempted to be displayed.
Main application that is failing is open office but I have written an application in XCode that also fails.

If you're having problems with freezing in the FILE -> OPEN dialog run this command fron the terminal.
    sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force
That seems to have worked for me.
In this case, the freezeing and/or beach ball of death has something to do with dynamic links being corrupted.  This command clears them out.

    Hi
If you browse the forum there are a number of posts similar to yours. See here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxserver1053comboupdate.html
I would make sure you have a fallback position first before applying the update as well as going for a manual download rather than using Software Update. By fallback I mean a bootable clone of the Server prior to the update. Try not to clone a 'live' Server.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1142
Explains what the update 'fixes'. Of particular interest is:
    File Services
Addresses an issue that could cause the AppleFileServer process to stop accepting connections while
consuming most of the available CPU time on the server.
The smb.conf file is updated to include the line "acl check permissions = no" in order to provide
expected permissions behavior for Windows clients connecting to the SMB service.
It's not something I would do but you could forego the update and amend the smb.conf instead.

  • Bridge CS4 freezes when I open a folder with avi files

Whenever I navigate to a folder with avi files, Bridge CS4 freezes. I have tried resetting my preferences, changing the file associations, but it still hangs. Both Windows and Bridge are set up to associate avi files with VLC Media Player. The files open and play just fine in VLC. I am running CS4 on a Win XP Pro machine. It used to not be a problem and I could play avi files in Bridge. I'm not sure when the problem started since I don't shoot a lot of video. Any ideas?

Thx for that im gonna try it....but is there a way to do it without using toolbar or cmd-c...? i mean using only the mouse?why does it have to highlight the file even though i click a bit next to it....?using icon view i can right click next to the folder and i wont have a problem but with list view that i prefer using it will highlight the whole row.....and i dont find free space to right click cause i got many files

  • Why is Photoshop CC freezing indefinitely when opening files?

Anytime I open a file in in Photoshop CC it will freeze for indefinite periods of time, even when my laptop is left for hours. A few updates ago, the program worked perfectly smoothly, even with multiple large files opened, but even small ones now make it freeze up. I end up having to force close the program in Task Manager because no other programs will work at the same time when this happens.
I don't know what I'm doing or what might be wrong with my laptop, but the program used to work like a charm and now it doesn't. I haven't noticed problems with any other programs. However, I am running a trial program right now instead of the full version like I was before.
Why might this be happening and what can I do about it?

This is more likely to do with your operating system than Photoshop, even if other applications are able to save OK.   We can see you are using Windows, but what version, and how long has it been installed?  And what are the hardware specs?
Something that might cause similar problems would be if the operating system was being starved of resources, like if you have Photoshop > Preferences > Performances set with Photoshop using 100% memory.  If you are using Task manager to close Photoshop, have it open to the Performance tab so you can see what is happening when you try to save.  Is memory and/or CPU maxed out, for instance?

  • Office for the Mac - file open slowness, freeze, or crash

When I select the File - Open window, any of the Office programs take a few minutes to display all of my files in the Documents folder. When they are finally displayed, any attempt to scroll through the list or go to a specific file results in the Mac's spinning wheel being displayed. Quite often, nothing happens after the wheel stops spinning. Sometimes, it just continues to spin. Consequently, it is almost impossible to use the File - Open window in Office to select a file to open. The only way I can do so is to use Finder to display my files in the Documents folder and then selecting them in that program's File - Open window.
When the wheel is spinning, Force Quit says that the specific Office program being used is "not responding." Usually, I use Force Quit to close down the Office program if it has frozen, crashed, or been slow using the File Open window.
I spent an hour yesterday with Microsoft Support on the problem. The conclusion of the tech was that I had too many files in my Documents folder. I pointed out that other programs such as FileMaker Pro didn't have this problem. The tech's response was that Office has to scan the entire Documents folder every time the File Open window is opened, but that FileMaker Pro stores a list of the last files in the Documents folder and doesn't rebuild the list every time.
I am skeptical of this "answer." The problem didn't exist until a few months ago.
My computer is a MacBook Pro 2.3gHz with 16 GB of RAM and a 750GB hard drive which has about 500GB free. This is a fairly fast machine with a Geekspeed of 10688. I was running the latest Mac OS Yosemite 10.10.1. The problem first surfaced with Office for the Mac 2008 about 3-4 months ago running Mac OS 10.10.1. I installed Office 365 yesterday, and and Mac OS Yosemite 10.10.2 today, and nothing changed.
The only solution that I know of is to take a lot of time to segregate my files in the Documents folder into more subfolders (I already have quite a few). That I am loath to do, because the solution doesn't work very well. It takes about a minute to select a subfolder in the File Open window, and then about another 30 seconds before Office allows me to scroll through a relatively small number of files (e.g., 100 files) in the subfolder.
When this question was posted to the Microsoft Community, I was directed to an article talking about problems with Office and Mac OS. None of the solutions worked, probably because the article considered only Office X and Office 2004 for the Mac and OS 10.2 and 10.3.
    Help, please!

    1) Verify that Office is fully updated. v14.4.7
    2) I suggest you run Font Book and vailidate your Fonts. Microsoft installs duplicate fonts and after you clean up your fonts, this has often fixed odd issues with Office.
Office 2011 Duplicate Fonts to Delete
    3) Delete the com.apple.LaunchServices file in your User's Library/Preferences folder. Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar and test. More info
    If this fails to fix....
Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.
Put a few test files in the Shared folder. Data in the Shared folder can be accessed by another User. When you "Switch Users", you can access the files in the shared folder. After you log into the new test User, drag from Shared (it actually copies). Put the test files in Documents.
Open Word. It won’t be in the Dock in the new User. Go to Applications to open.
Do you still see the issue?
If yes, you can eliminate the number of files in your Documents folder.
If no, then you might want to do a clean up in Documents.
*Remember to drag files back from Shared when you log into your main User.

  • Illustrator CS 5.1 freezing when selecting File Open

Hi - Recently Illustrator CS 5.1 will not let me use File >> Open to open a document. It immediately hangs and I get the beach ball and have to force quit (on a Mac) and in the force quit menu the program name will turn to red and say not responding. I can open new docs as well as double click and drag files over the AI icon with no issue. Saving seems to be fine as well. Any ideas as to what would be causing this? I've checked all fonts and everything gets a clean bill of health there. Plus no new fonts have been installed.
    Thanks for any input!

  • Firefox 4 freezes after i open it (keeps loading the page non-stop and i cant click or do anything

firefox 4 freezes after i open it (keeps loading the page non-stop and i cant click or do anything, plus there is no option to report an error so i cant even get this checked and this seems to be the case on 3 different computers i use all have windows 7 32bit.

    Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.

  • EA2/EA1 - SQL Developer freeze in file editor

I had a PL/SQL local file open (.pkb) with a database connection selected and compiled the file. There was a compilation error and when I went to correct it, SQL Developer froze (before my typing had updated the file).

I have just gotten basically the same exception on the console with EA2 using JDK 1.6.0_04. This time I had an SQL file open and had just looked at the history and switched back to the SQL tab to run a query.
Is the history tab trying to do something that is not yet being shipped with EA2?

  • Selecting disc using [File, Open] or [File, Save (as)] crashes application

I'm working in an application (doesn't matter which one, it's persistent in all apps) and choose [File, Open] (or [File, Save as].
Then I want to go to one of my HD's, so I want to select the HD.
But then all of a sudden, upon clicking for the desired HD in the upper left corner, the application quits, it doesn't even freeze, it simply quits...and I'm losing the non saved data I was working on..
This goes for only one specific HD in my setup. My Macintosh HD I can use without a problem.
Strangely enough when I work with the specific HD directly in the Finder there does not seems to be a problem, everything works fine.
I did " Repair disk" (no problem found) and "Repair permissions" (both from the Tiger DVD), but the problem still exists.
I created a new account, problem is exactly the same for the new account
I trashed com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.sidebarlists.plist but no luck
I tried to watch in crash reports, but the crashes do not seem to get logged.
I hope anyone has a clue what's going on and how I can repair this? This is really annoying

    Anyone?

  • Macbook freezes everytime I open the finder or use spotify! Really only happens when I scroll down past downloads folder, advice?

My Macbook 3.1 freezes eveytime I open the finder and scroll down to the downloads folder. I was attempting to clean out my mail downloads and all the stuff that seems to accumulate there so the folder is open. As soon as I go near it the whole things freezes up! The funny thing is that when I open the finder its fine so long as I stay clear of that folder or any of the items in it. Any advice? Am running 10.5.8 and would like to upgrade, that is why I was clearing files!

Office 2008 isn't exactly "clean". Office loves to install all sorts of fonts, and always because it is such a big application, it needs patches to work properly. Get the latest patches from http://www.microsoft.com/mac/
    Or get an alternative application*:

  • File Open/Selection Dialague crashes my computer

My Mac simply won't let me file -> open or file -> browse anything. I've tried CMD + O in photoshop, Word, iTunes, and Firefox and every time my Mac beachballs and then freezes. I can replicate this problem all the time without fail. However, it's not just opening files. Uploading files to the internet has the same effect. I can't even upload files as attachments in Gmail because when I click "Attach a File", my computer freezes. I know that the problem isn't with the Finder or any specific program because I can open programs and open documents from the Finder, it's just the browse/select file dialogue that freezes my system and crashes the program.
I'm not sure this has anything to do with the issue, but I've been using jdownloader for awhile and it's the first time my Mac has had a program completely freeze.
Since the problem, I've repaired my disk and ran antivirus. My disk's permissions are fixed save one error:
Open error 1: "Operation not permitted" on System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/Resources/English.lproj/N SNavPanelContentView.nib/keyedobjects.nib
Open error 1: "Operation not permitted" on System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/Resources/English.lproj/N SNavView.nib/keyedobjects.nib
Question: what is causing this and how can I fix it? I've found a similar sounding problem on another Apple forum : http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11262570 , except that was 5 years ago.
    edit: thanks in advance

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.<br /><br />
