Fresh install, random 100% drive usage and system wide lag.

Hi there, i just fresh installed Win 8.1 after having the issue of a svchost thrashing 100% disk access for minutes at a time and lagging whole system inc mouse pointer to the point that apps and games start to crash and the issue has not gone away.
I had also had the issue on old pc using different drives.
This is the 4th system where ive seen this behaviour in Win 8 since launch and was wondering if there is a fix yet?  It happens on my 2 pc, my mothers laptop and a friends desktop, all with different hardware, 2 factory installs and 2x fresh installs
from untouched iso's.
It happens randomly when nothing is running on pc or sometimes when gaming or using apps and makes the desktop unresponsive for minutes at a time and sometimes crashes apps with it due to the system wide lag.  Even ctrl alt deleting can take several
minutes for the menu to appear or even start Task Manager.
Ive managed to catch 1/2 the issue with procmon but due to taking so long for apps to launch while the lag happens i can only get the last 1/2 of the trace which shows a mix between a svchost, explorer.exe and wmiprvse.exe thrashing the system to a standstill
while accessing almost every file and reg key on the disk to over a million events recorded in procmon.
IS there a fix for this or a way to check the procmon trace to see exactly what service or task is causing the thrashing?  I think whatever it is is buggy/broken, running at realtime and is blocking anything else from using the system until its done,
which lags the system.
Surely even an overloaded drive wouldnt cause other apps or the mouse to lag/hang so badly to the point of crashing and even Xp or Win 7 wouldnt lag/hang the desktop due to a busy drive.

In order to diagnose your problem you will need to download and install the below
Install the WPT (windows Performance Toolkit) http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/4847.install-the-windows-performance-toolkit-wpt.aspx ,
When you have open an elevated command prompt and type the following
WPRUI.exe (which is the windows performance recorder) and check off the boxes for the following
First level triage, CPU usage, Disk IO.  If you problem is not CPU or HD then check off the relevant box/s as well (for example networking or registry)
Let it run for 60 secs or more and save the file (it will show you where it is being saved and what the file is called
Zip the file and upload to us on Onedrive (or any file sharing service) and give us a link to it in your next post.

  • How can I optimize my hard disk drive usage and performance in Windows 8 or Windows 7?

QuestionHow can I optimize my hard disk drive usage and performance in Windows 8 or Windows 7?
AnswerThere are a few simple steps you can take to ensure your hard disk drive is used optimally.
    Use Toshiba HDD Protection
Many Toshiba laptops come with a program called Toshiba HDD Protection pre-installed. This program helps to protect your hard disk drive from being damaged due to falls or impacts. By default, it should already be enabled. You might be tempted to lower the detection levels in this application, but doing so could cause your hard disk drive to be damaged. Remember that while the application can reduce the chance of damage, you should still avoid allowing the laptop to fall or suffer rapid impacts.
For more information on this utility, see the following article:
    TOSHIBA HDD Protection
    Optimize the drive
Windows 8 and Windows 7 optimize hard disk drives automatically through a process called defragmentation. Unless you've disabled this, you don't need to do anything. If you have disabled this and want to run the process, you can still do so.
In Windows 8, search for "Defrag" at the Windows Start screen and select "Defragment and optimize your drives."
In Windows 7, search for "Defrag" in the Start Menu's search field and select "Disk defragmenter."
You can use this tool to optimize your hard disk drives, allowing Windows to find needed files faster.
    Remove items from startup
Some applications run automatically when Windows starts. This can add additional functionality, but it also decreases the performance of your computer. Sometimes you might want to disable certain programs from starting automatically.
In Windows 8, search for "Task Manager" at the Start screen. Select the "Startup" tab. Select an application you'd like to disable from starting automatically and then click the "Disable" button in the lower-right.
In Windows 7, type "msconfig" in the Start Menu's search field and press ENTER. Uncheck the boxes next to applications you'd like to disable from starting automatically.
You should be sure of the purpose of an application before disabling it from starting automatically. Some applications might be important. If in doubt, you might consider searching on the Web to discover more information about a program. Remember that if you find that you disabled something vital, you can always re-enable it.

  • System-wide lag spikes. Possible reasons?

    Hi!
I have been having issues with my iMac for quite some time now and i have never really succeeded to figure out what might be causing it. The profromance of my iMac on regular basis is outstanding as I would expect it to be. How ever, every once in a while i would get an system-wide "lag spike". Everything would frzee for a second or two and the rainbow loading circle pointer would appear. During that time i cannot do absolutely anything besides move the mouse pointer.
This issue, I believe, started to take place after i replaced my HDD with SSDs. I have two raided OCZ Aggility 3 drives. I use the iMacs old HDD as an external storage. The old HDD has been formatted. Also i would like to point out that according to some standard SDD benchmarks i am not getting the performance one would expect from them.
Else than that, my iMac is mid 2010 2,8 ghz i5, i have 12gigs for 1333 DDR3 and im currently running on Mavericks, but i did have this issue on the previous versions as well.
This is my first post ever so please go easy on me. If you feel i havent written or explained enough please do let me know and i will see it corrected.

I've got this problem on Macbook pro (mid 2010, 2,4ghz i5, 8gb ram, nvidia gt330m)
I don't think it ever happened before upgrading to mavericks. But now it's horrible!
It seems to only happen to me when I'm running unity3D, but does happen every minute or even more often. And the system freezes for anywhere between a second and 15 seconds...

  • System wide lag

    Hello guys, new member here.
I'd like you guys to help me out with something here.
    I have a 13 inch, mid 2013 macbook pro with a 2.9 ghz i7, 8 gb RAM and a 750 gig HDD.
My problem is every now and then there is a system wide lag which freezes pretty much everything and audio playing from itunes also pauses during that time, it's quite frustrating as i've been searching for a fix since yesterday but havent found anything that can completely fix it. Usually there is only itunes, safari, mail and maybe one or two more things open at a time. I have checked my HDD for issues but there seem to be none. I suspect that this is related to the CPU since while I was using safari, a process called WindowServer would start using around 35% CPU, with nothing that intensive open on the browser
Note: This was ocurring much more frequently this morning but it has gotten a bit better now after I downloaded chrome and started using it instead of safari, I would, however, like to use safari instead.
Thanks in advance, I would be very thankful if someone could help me out with this, I have my exams coming up and I rely on my laptop for a lot of stuff.

  • Server 2012R2 Windows backup 100% CPU usage and no backup

    Hello!
I have a problem with two VM´s on a HP Proliant ML350p Gen8, that has Windows Server 2012R2 operating system with Hyper-V role installed.
Both VM´s are also 2012R2, one is DC/DNS/FILE/PRINT and the other one is Exchange 2013.
The problem itself is that, when Windows backup (wbengine.exe - Block level backup engine service) inside VM starts, it uses almost maximum CPU resource, so the VM´s CPUs are 100% used. Backup itself is not working, there is no network trafic. Only
way to get rid of 100% CPU usage is to restart the server.
When i start backup manually (Backup once - scheduled backup options), it is working and the CPU usage is around 20-30%.
One VM (DC/DNS/FILE/PRINT) has 2x vCPU and Exchange has 4x vCPU.
The problem started suddenly, the backup were performing slowly and failed.
Backups are scheduled on different time. Host level Hyper-V backup of VM´s works without any problem.
The backup location is Synology DS414 NAS and the servers are set up using iSCSI, for connecting separate backup lun´s for each server.
The Hyper-V host and both VM´s are patched up-to-date. Ofcourse i have tried a lot of restarts, looking event log, VSSADMIN - cannot find any errors...
    The network setup:
Hyper-V host has a team of two physical adapters, that is set up with a external virtual switch (shared with management operating system) and used by the VM`s normal network trafic.
Hyper-V host itself is using separte physcial network card, for connecting with iSCSI to Synology NAS.
I tried to set up another physical network card on the host and create a new virtual swich, add extra virtual nic to VM`s and use this for iSCSI traffic for Windows backup and it didnt make things better.
I need to find a solution, because i cannot restart the server every night for the backups to work.

  • U310 100% disk usage and lag

I have a Ideapad U310 which seem to lag and hang, for no good reason.
The disk usage keeps spiking to 100% (see below), which causes a lag of 2-3 seconds when swhitching from one window to another, opening the start menu or a folder (simple tasks)
There are no large programs running, Skype, Outlook and browsers primarily.
    My system;
    Core i7 - 3517U CPU @ 1.90 GHz
    8 gb RAM
    64 bit windows 8.1
Does anyone have any idea why?
    Thanks!

Could this be caused by the SSD drive, drives etc? Or is it just some kind of win 8.1 feature?
I don't  believe I am the only one with this issue?

  • Fresh install of 10.4.7 and crash and burn! A little help would be nice.

I did a fresh install of 10.4.7, there is no old information from the old system over to this new one. No user account info, not even desktop backgrounds yet...
Everything has been done from scratch, the only updates I have done are the 10.4.7 combo updater, and the generic ones on Software Update. I downloaded the 10.4.7 combo updater so to not do the incremental one since it seems to me that the incremental one sometimes can cause issue.
In any case, after the computer has been put to sleep any Apple application that has been left open, such as DVD Player, iTunes, iPhoto, and of the like stop responding. I am forced to hard shut down my machine because when I try to shut down my computer via the menu bar, the computer freezes completely.
I don't have any 3rd party software on this computer yet, nor will I till this is solved.
    This is my computer:
    Dual 1.25G4
    2GB ECC Ram
One 250GB Seagate HD 16MB Cache
One 250GB Maxtor HD 8MB Cache
One Seagate HD 80GB HD 8 MB Cache
    Radeon 9600 Pro Mac/PC Card.
Nothing else... so my computer shouldn't be showing these problems as far as I am concerned... it is probably a preference, but I can't image it to be so because of the fact that All Apple applications seem to be infected with this plight all at the same time.
I can't bring the computer to be repaired since it is out of warrantee, but to me it seems like there is an issue, and I can't fantom what the problem is in the first place.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Dual 1.24 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Matthew:
I am assuming that this installation was on an internal HDD.
Did you use a Full Retail Version and not a computer specific or update version to install?
What method/option did you use to do the basic installation?
Did your Repair Disk Permissions before and after installation.
I am not suggesting that you did or did not do any of these things. Just trying to establish a base.
    Good luck.

  • Fresh install on partitioned drive?

    Hi,
I bought a used Mac Mini with Tiger, and I want to erase the hd and do a fresh install. However, it looks like it has Windoze installed in a separate partition. If I "Erase and Install" Tiger will it erase both partitions and restore the hd to a single volume? Or should I do something to prepare the drive before attempting the install?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

If you want to get rid of the second partition you will need to re-partition the drive (despite the term, you can have just one partition).

  • Recently FireFox often has been causing 100% CPU usage and locks up until it finishes the process (various ones). Clearing cookies/cache didn't help. Any ideas?

    Windows 2000 SP4, 1g RAM, Firefox 9.0.1
We keep IE6 and Firefox open simultaneously for 2 different mail accounts. Firefox was always much faster even with 3 or 4 tabs open, but for the past couple of weeks when trying to update a screen the CPU suddenly goes to 100% usage and of course nothing will move until the particular process is finished. Closing one or more tabs does not help. If I close Firefox completely with Task Manager CPU usage goes back down to nil. After restarting Firefox CPU usage may or may not go back up depending upon whether it tries to continue the previous task that was locking it up.
It did not do this with Firefox 3.6 but then again it didn't happen immediately after updating to 9.0.1 either.

100% CPU usage occurred most often toward the end of the working day when busy trying to print on-line postage. We don't have any memory-consuming plugins but according to the knowledge base articles Firefox memory usage can gradually increase during the day even if you do nothing. It seems that may be the problem so we close and restart Firefox more often now as that usually fixes the problem. However, if we get stuck on a particular website update that causes the CPU to to go 100%, we can always start Firefox without previous tabs so the update will stop, or simply use a different browser until we have time to let the computer play games with itself.
So our workaround of restarting Firefox turns out to be the final solution (until we find something better - will post it if we do). Vic

Rundll32.exe Using High CPU on Windows 8.1
I use a Lenovo T440s laptop for my service calls and when I need to do work remotely. My laptop runs Windows 8.1 Professional. I love this laptop and it has proved to be tough as well as extremely fast. I noticed a couple weeks ago that my battery was going dead after about an hour of usage. I also noticed that my cooling fan in the laptop was running louder than normal. I decided to open Task Manger on my laptop to see what the issue was. I soon noticed that a process called rundll32.exe was using around 25 percent of my CPU. I killed the process and everything returned to normal.
A few days later, my battery was going dead very rapidly. My cooling fan was on almost constantly and was blowing warm air. I opened Task Manger and sure enough, rundll32.exe was using 25% of my CPU again. I killed the process and everything was fine. It wasn’t long and my laptop was doing the exact same thing as I described before. I decided it was time to get to the bottom of this issue. Here is how I troubleshot what program was using the rundll32.exe and in the process was killing my battery.
Step One: I downloaded Process Explorer. This is an excellent tool. It is similar to Task Manager but goes into way more depth on the processes and dlls that are running. I extracted the download and then ran Process Explorer as an administrator.
Step Two: One of the first things I noticed was rundll32.exe was using 23 percent of my CPU again.
I right-clicked on the rundll32.exe process and selected properties. I clicked on the Image tab and at once saw the culprit. A utility to monitor and gauge my battery usage, called PwrMgrBkGndMonitor, was draining my battery instead of saving it.
Step Three: After a little digging around in my installed programs I located a program called Lenovo Settings Dependency Package. PwrMgrBkGndMonitor was installed in the Lenovo Settings Dependency Package.
I didn’t use this program and decided I didn’t need it. I uninstalled the program and restarted my laptop. I haven’t had a problem with the rundll32.exe using up my CPU since I uninstalled Lenovo Settings Dependency Package.
If you are experiencing the same symptoms has stated above and you are running a Lenovo laptop with Windows 8.1, this may be your issue. However, before you uninstall the program I would recommend using Process Explorer. Process Explorer will help you determine the exact program that is giving you issues before blindly uninstalling and killing services. I hope my troubleshooting steps can help you find program is making rundll32.exe use high CPU usage. Let me know in the comments if this helped you!

  • Fresh Install after boot drive crashed... advice needed plaese

So wake up today turn on my tower and all I get is a grey screen and a clicking boot drive. Sounds like the other three drives are mounting fine. Or my tower is need of some Snow.
So I know enough to say bye bye boot drive.... my question is-
I now have purchased Snow Leopard and will start fresh. Should I take out the remaining three drives while I handle a clean install. Any advice to make this process a bit more painless? I back up all drives expect my boot UGH... I am going to start using time machine.... learned a lesson.

There's no way to know how long a delay will be while waiting for a 'time-out'. It depends on how well or how poorly the OS is able to communicate with the drive, and how bad the controller chips on the drive are. You can view the problem as a Quality of Service issue. Your Mac is trying to communicate with the drive, determine it's size/type/format/timing etc, while also verifying the quality of the data. CRC error checking takes place along with a host of quality control measures implemented with each new version of Mac OS. Leopard made some drives fail due to poorly designed firmwares on the controller chips. SL got even pickier.
During this process, that's failing, the problem could be any part of the driver verification system.
On the other hand, if the drive quits spinning or the controller chips don't answer back at all, the 'time-out' will probably end sooner.
It's luck of the draw when you try to determine the exact cause of a drive failure - controller chips, drive motor, head crash platter damage, r/w head... I just call it 'bad' and throw the drives into a bin where they will get speared with a digging bar before going to recycle

  • Can install a hard drive formatted and used on a MacBook (Late 2006) to a MacBook Pro (I believe Mid 2006)

I just bought a used MacBook Pro and would like to install a hard disk with an existing copy of OS 10.6.8 into what I believe is a Mid 2006 MacBook Pro.  The specs on the MBP are
    Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro2,2
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.16 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          4 MB
      Memory:          2 GB
      Bus Speed:          667 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MBP22.00A5.B07
      SMC Version (system):          1.12f5
The existing copy of OS 10.6.8 is on a 1TB drive I recently installed in my Late 2006 White MacBook (NOT PRO).
Being able to do this would make my life a **** of a lot easier, but I want to make sure that this won't corrupt any files or create a wacky operating system.

An employee (not sure if he was a Genius or not...he was by the bar and found me a replacement battery for the MBP) told me that it's possible, I was in a rush, though, and want to rethink doing this...I thought the idea made sense, since it's essentially just a processor and graphics card upgrade, no?

  • Hard drive noise and system performance.

Just like normal, my hard-drive makes noises (normal clicking, etc). When I'm doing something though, like typing, the system slows down for just a split second once a noise it made, stops registering my letters and then types all the letters that weren't regestered. (Keep in mind, this is over a one second period).
For another example, when I launch dashboard, the widgets will start to appear on screen, stop for a (not even a) second, then the widgets will fall into place like they should. I have run disk utility multiple times, and each time it says that the HD is fine.
Is this behavior normal? I can live with it, it's just kind of annoying.

lol, I was going to add "as long as it's not doing that all the time" ...but was hoping for the quick fix. You might want to check your Activity Monitor and see which program or background process is causing the activity ...have you installed anything lately that coincided with this problem? You also might want to try booting into Safe Mode to see if things still persist.

  • Fresh install of OS 10.6 and retain iPhoto Events and such

Can I use my Apple store-bought OS 10.6 disc to install a fresh copy of Snow Leopard or is there just an upgrade on it?  What I really want to do is wipe my HDD and reinstall OS X from scratch but not lose any of my itunes playlists, song counts, apps and such, as well as Events and Albums in iphoto.

Well when you go to install Snow Leopard again. Insert your Install DVD & boot while holding C, then enter your language & then just select your current HDD. Don't format obviously, and it will just write over the files again with the installation & you should still have all your data / files there when it's finished.
But again, this is a very strange thing to do to make it run faster...
But that's the answer to your original post as requested. I would strongly recommend backing up anything you need onto an external HDD as a backup, as well as maybe making an image of the current drive.
