Fstab and auto mount

Hi, I have 2 windows partitions that I want to mount automatically at the startup, but if I set the 'auto' option, the owner of the device is root, and I have only read rights. Now I've inserted 'noauto', so I go to Konqueror and click on the device to mount it. But it's not the ideal solution. Any help?
Thanks
actual fstab
/dev/sda5 /mnt/dati vfat users,noauto,gid=users,umask=0002,rw,exec,utf8 0 0
/dev/sda2 /mnt/windows vfat users,noauto,shortname=mixed,auto,gid=users,umask=0002,rw,exec,utf8 0 0

Check `man mount` for uid and gid and mask options for the partition's filesystem. Maybe the user or users option can be interesting and altering the rights of the mount point, too.
Describe exactly what you want, if you can't figure it out with the manpage. E.g. which user and group should own the "partition", which right's shall be applied to folders and files, etc.

  • Read-only bind mount using fstab and systemd

I'd like to have read-only bind mount in fstab. I've read that proper solution of that problem is adding to /etc/fstab those lines:
    /src/dir   /dst/dir    none   bind   0 0
    /src/dir   /dst/dir   none   remount,bind,ro   0 0
I know it works on non-systemd enviroments (Debian) but with systemd I get error message from systemd-fstab-generator during startup about duplicate entry in /etc/fstab and my mount point is not read-only. Does anyone have better solution than running a script?

You could use the "alternative" way of doing it, which is exemplified in the manual page: '
    mount --bind olddir newdir
    mount -o remount,ro,bind olddir newdir
Here I can reproduce your problem but the "alternative" way seems to work fine.
That's not the alternative way, that's the only way. Though, you don't need to specify both the source and dest on the remount -- just the dest.

  • [SOLVED] Thunar (XFCE4) Does not Auto-mount USB Drive

After reading some posts related to USB auto-mounting in Thunar and yet still having the problem, I decided to post this. Thunar used to detect the USB drives and auto-mount them. These days (I GUESS after moving to systemd), It cannot do so. Still, there is the icon of USB drive on the left side panel, but when I click on it to browse it, I get this error:

The error looks suspiciously like one I had not so long ago and it turned out I still had an 11-media-by-label-auto-mount.rule in /etc/udev/rules.d.  Once I removed that and rebooted everything was fine again.

  • Archiso no longer auto-mounts drive

I'm using a custom installation with archiso..
It used to boot and auto-mount the drive with archisolabel="XXX" (where XXX is the drive label) to /bootmnt
Now, updating to newest archiso-git it always brings me into maintanence mode (cannot mount drive at /dev/disk/by-label/arch)
Typing "mount /dev/disk/by-label/arch /bootmnt; exit" works and finishes the init.
I've tried setting the drive label on this -- however the new archiso doesn't seem to support that:
    [root@image64 iso]# tune2fs -L arch /dev/sdc1
    tune2fs 1.41.9 (22-Aug-2009)
tune2fs: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sdc1
    Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.
Any ideas what I'm missing here?

That’s correct Bob and that behaviour is fine for the purpose which it is intended i.e to relink when a job has moved in the filesystem or across workstations. The file selection/highlighting behaviour may just have been a quirk but it was a useful one in some specific scenarios. Mine was (magazine production workflow):
Images are placed by a layout artist in the format they are supplied (usually JPGs). The job folder is then passed to a prepress operator to perform finished cutouts and retouching. They output a corrected PSD into the same job’s images folder. They alt+tab to Indesign, select the image and got to Relink. The app file browser window opens and the linked JPEG is highlighted. Immediately above/below it is the matching new PSD (if they’re sorted by name). It therefore becomes far less likely that the operator will select the wrong file to relink because of the new PSD’s immediate proximity to the JPG.
With no highlighting the operator has to scroll/search for the file visually (with one eye on the window title bar to get the ridiculously long but fabulously descriptive filename :) to relink and this not only slows them down but also greatly increases the possibility of a selection error without the visual cue.
This may sound like a trivial gripe, but when some layouts contain large numbers of images, some of which are visually similar (and therefore can not easily be spotted shifting when the Relink is committed) it becomes an issue.
    To be fair to Adobe:
    1. This is not a normal scenario for the vast majority of users.
    2. It was probably only a happy accident that files were highlighted in the first place.
Anyway I have a workaround. I asked my picture editor to convert all images to PSD before they’re placed :-)

  • Fstab and usbdisk

    Hi,
I have a USB disk attached to my computer. All works fine and I can mount the disk manually, but if I try and add the disk to fstab and automaticly mount it at startup it says that the disk is not present when it tries to check the filesystem on the disk. The bootup stops and I need to login with root and fix the problem or press "Ctrl-d" to reboot
Is it that USB disks are recognized later than sata/pata attached disks?
Do I need to automount the USB disk in some other way?

I have a cloned backup install on a usb disk set to manually mount in fstab.
    /dev/sdc1       /mnt/sdc1         ext2    rw,user,noauto           0      0
    /dev/sdc3       /mnt/sdc3         ext3    rw,user,noauto           0      0
It's been a while but I think I had it automounting by just using defaults in fstab.
    /dev/sdc1       /mnt/sdc1         ext2       defaults                   0      0
    /dev/sdc3       /mnt/sdc3         ext3       defaults                   0      0
Might need to have usb listed in mkinitcpio.conf hooks= line.
    edit.. oops, fixed example lines.

  • How Do I find out what app is auto-mounting a network share and stop it?

I have a new laptop, the 13" rMBP.  I installed Steam and wanted to use the network share on my server to store the game files.  Everything went OK.  I closed Steam, disconnected the share and shutdown my laptop.  When I opened my laptop later on at work, it started to try and mount the network share. It keeps on going it.  I removed the Steam app and all files related to Steam that I could find.  I've looked at fstab, auto_home, auto_master and a large list of other files and directories and I *still* cannot find the offending file that's auto-mounting the share.  It's really frustrating.
The share auto-mounts when I am home but not on the desktop or in finder.  I find it by looking at /Volumes/ in terminal.  If I mount the share manually under /Volumes/ it shows as Games-1 and mounts on the desktop under Games.
Does anyone have any ideas on where I should be looking to find the offending process/file/daemon?
    Thank you!
    Trevor

thanks for the reply but are you sure about this? What difference would it make? Why 5 apps?
Even if it does work, which I doubt, at some point, I will have to resync ALL my apps again and surely the same thing will happen again, and I will be none the wiser. I still won't know which app it is. There must be a way of finding this out.
    Any ideas?
What is really freaking me out is how it is connecting to my carrier (who is charging me) with Cellular data switched off.......?
    Thanks again.

  • E17 on a fresh Arch Linux + gtk apps... auto mounting and other issues

    hi all...
I have gone through the forums and found a similar but-not-quite-the-same thread about this, which is why I am posting a new thread - so, please excuse any redundancy/laziness.
As the topic says, I am making a new Arch Install, on my laptop that has/had arch+kdemod on it for quite some time now. I have now tarred that old install and put it on my desktop that has more RAM than this lappy. So I went with a minimalist approach - after googling for long, I managed to put together something that takes up about 350 MB RAM, when running the desktop, firefox, mplayer, openoffice, two or three terminals, and conky - which is all pretty good. But I am having some teething troubles in many issues, so any help in the following is most appreciated.
    My set-up and the problems....
WM - e17, from the repos (I tried, but could not get the easy_e17 script to work properly)
    FM - emelfm2
            - I am not able to get my USBs, CDs, DVDs etc to mount automagically. I have HAL from the repos. This is my fstab.
    /dev/cdrom             /media/cd   auto    ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
    /dev/dvd               /media/dvd  auto    ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
    #/dev/fd0               /media/fl   auto    user,noauto             0      0
This setup gave me no trouble at all when using Arch-Kdemod. Now I have to be root to mount from the command line, and can not auto mount cd/dvd/USBs.
E17 file manager enabled is also no help.
    browser - firefox, dillo
    terminal - mrxvt
    editor - leafpad
    audio - mpd + sonata
    video - gmplayer
    sys monitor - conky
cd/dvd burner - recorder, from the repos
    Openoffice, PSPP for statistics
    Pidgin
    Wengophone2
at the moment I am behind a proxy and haven't yet tried it, but can anyone confirm it is still working...?
    epdfview
    chmsee
    rtorrent
    feh, exhibit
    dreamchess
That is the whole setup, in case it helps someone.
Thanks for reading, and waiting for suggestions about the auto mount issue.

    hi all...
    Thanks for the replies.
@fingel... That udev rules addition on the wiki gave me the jitters initially as it looked like I was hacking away at my systems innards, BUT, after trying everything else, including things mentioned here, nothing worked. So I finally did the udev thing, and now the USB is mounting fine.
However I still cannot get DVDs or CDs to mount. I am added to the optical group, and yet I have to click the mount icon in emelfm2 to be able to mount the CD or DVD - the only consolation is that I am able to mount it as normal user.
Any help there....? I haven't modified anything from the usual install, except for this udev thingy.
And, How can I make the mrxvt terminal show me more lines on scrolling up. Now it is allowing me to scroll up only by 10 lines or so, and I am having to pipe through less to be able to view anything meaningful in commands like yaourt -Ss

  • External hard drive and SD card won't auto mount

I am using MBP with retina on Yosemite. MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013).
On Maverick, all my external drives used to auto mount. The same was true just after Yosemite was installed. Lately, only my Time Machine hard drive auto mounts and others don't, e.g. my backup drive that I use with Super Duper! and my camera SD card. I have to go to disk utility and mount them manually. I did not see any option for auto mount in disk utility.
Could you please guide me on how to get auto mount back?
    Thanks in advance

I have been dealing with this same issue for the past several months. Running a Macbook Pro (Mid 2010) with OS X Yosemite 10.10.1. This problem occurs when I plug in Firewire, USB, or SD card. The external hardware appear to be working fine, it has to be either a setting, or a quirk that needs corrected with Yosemite. I have run all OS systems since Snow Leopard. Never had this problem. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Difference with CD auto-mount between OL 5.7 and OEL 5.4

    Hello,
    I'm experiencing a difference when auto-mounting a CD between OL 5.7 and OEL 5.4 (x86_64).
Under OEL 5.4, a CD does not have "execute" privileges.
The mount command shows the following relevant entry:
    Oracle Linux 5.7:
    /dev/hdc on /media/Oracle_11gR2_x86-64 type udf (ro,nosuid,nodev,uid=0)Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.4
/dev/hdc on /media/Oracle_11gR2_x86-64 type udf (ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,uid=0)I also wonder why there is a difference when using Ubuntu. In Ubuntu Linux (11.04) I can address the problem by installing "autofs" and modifying /etc/auto.misc to include the "exec" mount option. For instance:
cd              -fstype=iso9660,ro,nosuid,nodev,exec :/dev/cdromHowever, under Oracle Enterprise Linux, modifying /etc/auto.misc has no affect.
I suspect the the differences are related to gnome-mount and HAL. I know how to work-around the problem, but I wonder if someone knows more details and when and what was changed regarding this issue between OEL 5.4 and OL 5.7
    Thanks and kind regards.

Meanwhile I found the source of information:
    http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/5/html-single/5.6_Technical_Notes/index.html#hal
    5.6_Technical_Notes
Prior to this update, the "noexec" option was enforced when mounting CDs, preventing scripts on that media from being run automatically. However, this also prevented applications that rely on executing from media from working correctly. Since the intended level of protection provided by this feature is minimal, and there are other ways to achieve it, the feature has been removed and the "noexec" option is no longer enforced.

  • [SOLVED]External HD: Auto-mount in read-only and only root can access

So I followed the advice in http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 88#p583088 regarding using udev to auto-mount my external 60gb harddrive, and it works.  The only problem is, it is being mounted read-only and I can only view the contents via sudo or as the superuser.
Can anyone guide me in the right direction I need to go to get this changed?  I have already once tried to recursively chown everything on the harddrive, but that didn't seem to work.  The syntax I used from that above article specifies "rw" as one of the options for the mount command, so I am stumped as to why this happened.
    Thanks

  • Fstab can't mount a particular partition!!

Hi all!! This is my 1st post on the Arch forums and my 2nd much more successful foray into Arch Linux.
Alas, not all things are perfect.  More to the point, I'm unable to get fstab to correctly mount one of my ntfs drives.  Here's my fstab:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
    none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
    /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    UUID=345d8b40-7df1-4181-8f05-8b5a5e723ed5 swap swap defaults 0 0
    UUID=eccd251d-8731-4a30-8dca-7008b85cb321 / jfs defaults 0 1
    UUID=982690952690764A /mnt/tama ntfs-3g defaults 0 0
    #UUID=00AE40670B81A404
    #/dev/sdb2 /mnt/neko ntfs-3g defaults 0 0
I've tried mounting by "/dev/sdb2" and by its UUID (right above /dev/sdb2) to no avail.  I'd also mention that it mounts fine after boot-up and log-in.  However, my 1st NTFS drive mounts perfectly as you can see above.  Another thing to take note is that when I attempt to mount this 2nd NTFS drive (by fstab), a somewhat long message pops up during boot, BUT goes by too fast for me to read.
If anyone can put me on the right track, I'd be very grateful.

  • [SOLVED] kde 4.6 and Udisks mounting problems with Dolphin

    Hello,
I have a problem with Dolphin in KDE 4.6 where it displays my non-Arch partitions (a / and /home used for Opensuse) as well as a CD-Rom or usb if inserted, but registers an error when I click on the device/partition icon. Specifically, I get the following error displayed at the bottom of Dolphin:
An error occurred while accessing Hard Drive, the system responded: org.freedesktop.UDisks.Error.Failed: Error creating mount point: No such file or directory.
Because of this error, I am unable to mount usb pendrives, access CDs, or access the non-Arch partitions. I'm not sure if this is a KDE error or if it related to Arch as I never encountered this error running KDE 4.6 in Opensuse.
    My daemons running in /etc/rc.conf
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus networkmanager netfs crond alsa kdm)
    My /etc/fstab
    #/dev/cdrom             /media/cd   auto    ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
    #/dev/dvd               /media/dvd  auto    ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
    #/dev/fd0               /media/fl   auto    user,noauto             0      0
    /dev/sda1 / ext4 defaults,noatime 0 1
    /dev/sda5 swap swap defaults 0 0
    /dev/sda6 /home ext4 defaults,noatime 0 1
    tmpfs   /tmp            tmpfs defaults,nodev,nosuid,mode=1777                   0 0
    tmpfs   /var/lock       tmpfs defaults,nodev,nosuid,noexec,mode=1777,size=10M   0 0
    tmpfs   /var/run        tmpfs defaults,nodev,nosuid,noexec,mode=0755,size=10M   0 0
Now, I don't have hal running as a daemon as I have read that it is no longer needed in KDE 4.6. Similarly, I don't have my CD-Rom drive mounted as I read in the udev wiki that Udisks automatically mounts devices and partitions. The wiki also indicates that Udisks is supposed to require little configuration.
I've searched the forum and Google, and I have not been able to find any information documenting a Dolphin and UDisks mounting error in KDE 4.6.
I installed KDE through the # pacman -S kde    command, but is there some other package that I need to install in order to get Udisks working properly?
    Thanks.

When I enter   $ groups in a terminal I get the following
sys adm disk lp wheel games video audio optical storage power users
So I'm definitely part of the storage group.
I think I found a solution. I created a /data mountpoint in fstab and a /data folder in my root directory. Now, I'm able to mount and access the contents of the /home partition from Opensuse. The reason I wanted to do this was to access music and photos and transfer them onto my Arch /home partition.
I uncommented the cdrom, dvd, and fd0 devices in fstab and I created /media/cd, /media/dvd, and /media/fl. After inputting a # mount -a, my CDROM drive reads properly as does my USB.
So once again, thank, you for pointing me in the right direction.
One final thought. I was under the impression from reading the UDisks information that it automatically detected and mounted other partitions and devices without them being explicitly mounted in fstab. Was the assumption wrong? In other words, for UDisks and Dolphin to work together properly in KDE 4.6, do all of the devices that appear have to first be mounted in fstab?
