Ftg shot 720p24 (on hvx200) interpreted as 59.94 in sequence

Hey guys
From all that i know i understand dvcproHD to record everything in 59.94 and any 24p/30p modes are actually recorded with 60 frames just distributed and duplicated to 60fps.
My timelines and ingested material all plays fine but i'm just trying to understand if i am dealing with the ftg properly.
When i log and transfer the ftg is 720p24 DVCPROHD @ vid rate of 59.94 and shooting rate of 24. This makes sense. When i ingest it and bring it into a sequence the compressor is 720p60 @ 59.94.
I'd like to maintain this 24fps workflow as much as possible. I vaguely understand the "remove advanced pulldown..." option in the L&T window but want to know when i would use this feature and if i am correct to leave the footage as 720p60 when a progressive 24fps is desired.
thanks all!
/j

sorry to hassle you so much. I'm just confused on something i thought i knew.
The root of a lot of my problems is that i'm trying to sort out why my footage in a sequence is "green-barred" at the top.
Its the same ftg as before, but i'll list how it was shot:
720p24 with a vid rate of 59.94
compressor: 720p60
I've used the easy setup of HD 59.94 AJA Kona3 - 720p 59.95 DVCProHD.
creating a dropframe sequence of:
59.94 / 720p60 (@100%)
Unlimited RT
Video Quality: Dynamic
Playback Rate: FULL
When i use SAFE RT i can't have 2 tracks on top of each other even if its a straight cut in on the second track and no masking/cropping.
When there is 1 track by itself the green bar at the top is displayed.
I must have got something setup wrong, i just can't isolate it.
I've occasionally felt in the past that i've had to render more than i should.
My drive is a standalone eSATA S2VR Duo raid (2tb) and the media is on that drive.
As well the vid card is the ATI 1950(?) card recommended by apple for FCS.
thanks again!

  • SHOT in 1080i 24p HDV and need help with sequence setting!!!THANKS!

So I shot my entire project with my canon xhA1 in 24p in HDV 1080, I uploaded to my FCP and its fine, however when I go to settings to check my sequence settings it says its displaying everything in 720x480 as if it was shot with low res NTSC DV, now when I try to change everything manually to the frame size HD 1440x1080 and pixel aspect ratio HDV 1080, and Quicktime Video Settings Compressor to HDV1080p24...I go back and see that the image in my canvas has shrunk, and the only way to fix it is by going to every clip and dragging it out to adjust it to fit my screen...Is there something that I am doing wrong, or an easier way to go about doing this?!? I basically just want to edit real time without any compressions so I can see the perfect quality. Thanks!

Did you try to choose an Easy Setup that matches your format? Then create a new sequence then? You don't say which version of FCP you are on but if it's v.6 then it will ask to change your settings upon editing in a new clip if they are incorrect.

  • HVX200 speed changes in FCP . . .HELP!

    So confused here . . . I appreciate any help people can offer . . .
Shot footage with HVX200 in 720p/24p mode at various frame rates (12,18,48,60). Trying to use it alongside my DVCPRO50 project footage (with the speed changes of course). I imported the P2 clips into my project, they appear to have retained the proper frame rate: 59.94fps. But when I put them into my DV50 29.97fps timeline they of course need rendering, but they DON'T play back at their proper speeds. They look more or less the same. Any idea why this is so?
I KNOW that I should have shot in the 720p/24pn mode so that the excess frames would have been removed for 29.97 playback, but I tried using the Panasonic/Apple DVCPROHD Frame Conversion tool and NOTHING happens. I follow the instructions to a T, select the clip in the bin, select the plug-in from the tools menu and NOTHING happens at all, no message, no chime, nothing. I'm running FCP 5.1.2 in OS 10.48, Quicktime 7.13 — everything is up to date. ANY IDEA what I've done wrong? I even tried re-importing the 720 clips to no avail.

    Welcome to the forums.

You do realize that you are using HD footage in a standard def project, right? And that the camera does shoot DVCPRO 50. Just curious.
I imported the P2 clips into my project, they appear to have retained the proper frame rate: 59.94fps. But when I put them into my DV50 29.97fps timeline they of course need rendering, but they DON'T play back at their proper speeds. They look more or less the same. Any idea why this is so?
If you drop the footage into a 29.97 timeline and render, it will play back at 29.97fps...it won't slow down or speed up. That is not how you adjust the speed. I often get footage shot 720p60, and if I want to just mix it with my other 720p24 footage, I drop it into the timeline and render. However, if I want it to be slow motion, I use the DVCPRO HD Frame Rate Converter.
But you said you tried that and nothing happened...so try this trick. Create a new project and copy the clips into that project, THEN try the converter. It is an odd bug, but that is what I do and it works great.
For more information, I blog about my experiences working with P2 and DVCPRO HD in general. CLick on Underdog to get there.

  • HVX200 / 1080i24p, can FCP handle now?

I've read a few posts, but many seem to be dated prior to the latest release of FCP and I'm a bit confused.
I have some footage shot on an HVX200 at 1080i24p (not the PA mode, shot it in the wrong mode by mistake) and was wondering if FCP 6 will handle this now or if I'd need to first work with it in Cinema Tools or Raylight? One post suggested that I should get a copy of Premiere and do it that way, but I'd rather stay in a comfortable app such as FCP if I don't have to jump through hoops to import it/use it properly as 24p. I'd like to edit it in 24p to give me a more film look.
    Thanks.

You shot 24p...you already have the film look. No need to edit it as 23.98 to get it...the camera recorded it at 29.97, but with the 24p look. So, that part is done. All you need to do now is edit it. The film look is more than frame rate...it is lighting and composition.
FCP has been able to handle that format since, like, forever. Just need to make sure that you have at least firewire 800 drives. GOOD ONES...not those MyBook things. Talking CalDigit, MaxxDigital or G-Tech here...OWC even. eSATA would be better.
No hoops, just LOG AND TRANSFER. But if you want to work with the files natively without waiting for the import to finish, there is always RAYLIGHT to bring in the footage. I prefer the MXF4QT application, as it makes the import process VERY slick, and imports all that wonderful Metadata that I usually have on my footage. But not everyone needs that.

  • HVX200 native Mode Question

Hey guys, kind of a newbie question here. We're running FCP 6 and were transferring over footage shot on an HVX200 in 24PN mode but it's showing up in FCP as 29.97. Shouldn't it be showing up as 23.98 in native mode? When I tried transferring off another camera it worked fine. Is there a setting on the camera I need or is one of the camera's defective in some way?

Did you shoot 720p or 1080p?

  • HVX200 footage captured on a DV deck?

Is it possible to use a standard miniDV deck to capture footage shot on a HVX200? Or do I need to rent a specific deck?
    Thanks!
    Matt

You cannot record DVCProHD to tape on a Panasonic HVX200.
With that cam, you can only record to p2 cards, a Focus FS-100, to a laptop using FCP 5.1.4 or better or Scopebox or HD Monitor.
    Has someone told you differently?

  • Alpha Channel / gradation interpretation problem

I have a very peculiar problem, which started happening after upgrading to CC 2014. I was hoping that the latest update would fix it but it didn't.
The problem is with the incorrect way Premiere interpreters Animation codec QT files with alpha with semi-transparent elements that were exported from AE. I have never seen this kind of behavior in any software before. As long as I had my alpha set to straight (unmatted), RGB + Alpha Millions of Colors+ when exporting from AE, everything has always worked fine. And it did in this project. I dropped the animation on the top of my footage in the sequence and it worked. But then after the upgrade to 2014 some unexpected results started to happen whenever I reposition the imported graphics that have alpha.
This image is correct before repositioning it:
And look what happens as soon as I move it:
The difference is huge and unacceptable!
The interesting thing is when I reset the position to original it looks fine again.
    I checked several things:
    - footage interpretation is correct: straight alpha
    - sequence settings: composite in linear color is checked off (and if I turn it on it messes up the other elements - so I assume default off is correct)
    - Changing the clip's opacity blending mode to Lighten fixes the problem in a way. But I can't use lighten on these graphics because I have some dark elements as well (which become transparent when in lighten mode)
The bottom line is - this just should work. Importing animation codec QT files with alpha is pretty straightforward and basic operation. So is there some kind of a bug?
I don't know what else I could do. This really messes my client revision process because I need to readjust position of the graphic elements. And just the way and why this is happening does not make sense to me.
    Please help! Thanks.
    Jim

By the way i realized i cannot export bars or other 3d graphics with background either. Same problem.

  • FC-HD Making me render every shot

I'm sure I've done something wrong but I shot in HD and am editing in HD and it's making me render every shot. What step have I missed?

-New Sequence (FILE > NEW > SEQUENCE)
If it doesn't prompt you to chose an easy set up, go to the "Easy Setups" command in the FCE menu. Choose your HD setting (it should be "HDV __" with a specific HD setting behind it, depending on whether you shot in 1080i or 720p, select that preset).
Copy and paste all of the clips in the DV sequence (the one you have to render in) into the HD sequence and see if you have to render. If you don't, then always use this specific sequence preset while editing with your camera's footage.

  • HVX footage always need rendering

Hi folks. I'm new to using the HVX200. This is probably a bonehead question, but hopefully someone can help me out. I import the footage from the P2 cards, and all if fine, however, every time I drop some footage onto the timeline, I need to render the entire thing. It's fine in the preview window, but on the timeline, all needs rendering. The footage was shot 720P at 24fps. I've meddled with every setting for the timeline. None seem to work. I figure it should be DVC PRO 720p, or something close to that, but none work. Do I have to run the stuff through compressor or something? Sorry for the dumb question, but any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    EASY SETUPS.
Choose the DVCPRO HD 720p24 Easy Setup...create a new sequence. Use that sequence.

  • Choppy footage

Okay, i've got a bunch of clips I shot back to back without changing any settings. They were shot with a HVX200 onto a FireStore FS-100 as Quicktime files. Putting all of the footage into my 24 frame timeline is perfect except for one file. It's really choppy. It plays smoothly in a 60 frame timeline though. I can't seem to figure out why. NO settings were changed anywhere on the camera or FireStore, why is one clip giving me trouble?
Is there any way I can fix this clip so it can play smoothly on a 24 frame timeline?

Then I don't know what to say. IF they are the same, yet one likes the 60 frame sequence better...well, something is off.
Use Compressor to convert to DVCPRO HD 720p24. THat should clear it up.

  • HVX 720 25p support - NAB is over

I am a European HVX200 user. When can I cut finally my 720 25p material? Before 3 years I am switched too mac, must I now really switch back to the PC?
    http://www.ag-hvx200.de

I know you are in Europe and all, but is there any reason you cannot shot 720p24 24PN? That is the frame rate of film, and this way you can get started and edit.
Or you can shoot 720p24 at 59.94 and convert to PAL later when there is support. I have seen some shows transferred from here to the UK and from the UK to here and they all look good.
I know it is a workaround, but at least you can get started. Apple is tight lipped about release dates for anything.
Dunno about raylight. Other than 720p25 what else does it offer?

  • Upconvert Fuzziness

    Hello Group,
Question on an upconvert procedure that has me a little confused.
A show will be shot on the HVX200 using some DVCPROHD to FireStore for slo-mo and beauty shots, and using MiniDV for the rest. They would, of course, like to send the whole thing out as DVCPROHD (apparently the end result will be broadcast and they want it at 720p).
Now, 720p24 is obviously 23.98 and the HVX200 in SD can do 24p or 24pa. If I capture EVERYTHING as 720p24 using my Kona card, shouldn't the DP plan to use 24pa for the SD stuff so the framerates will match? I am a little confused because I know that when we master to tape, pulldown will be added back in anyway, but editing the two different framerates could be problematic...right?
    Thanks In Advance!
    ~Athen

i've a buddy who uses an hvx and a firestore. he's not been able to get overcranked video to capture to firestore. confirm that you can do this.
dvcpro hd for slo mo and beauty but the rest on mini-dv, this makes no sense.
but, as i don't know the reasons there are two options that i can see: downconvert in camera the dvcpro hd and spit it out as dv25 so there you have the same flavour of video to work with.
i was reading a thread from paul from apple somewhere the past couple of days and he was extolling the virtues of format conversion within compressor. do a short test of "uprezzing" dv25 to dvcpro hd 720p24 and see what it looks like. most likely it'll be horrendous but ya won't know until ya test. then try the other way and see what happens.
i for one will be very glad when there is one tv format........yeah, i'll keep dreaming.

  • AE files 59.97 on Export 23.98 on FCP import?

    Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen.
We have hired a new editor recently who regularly works with AE to create really cool looking FX. We then import his QT exports into FCP and cut into our DVCPro 720p60 timeline. When we import the QT's they show up as 23.98 instead of 59.94. The clip length is still the same the frame rate is just off. So we end up missing the back half of the clip. Now if I double the length of the clip we can see the whole shot but at the wrong frame rate.
I opened the clips in QT and they played properly and the frame rate showed 59.94. But for some reason when I import the clips into FCP they are not being read properly. I checked my settings in AE and everything looks correct. As a work around I sent the clips thru Compressor and used the DVCPro HD 720p60 setting. Now when I import them they read as 59.94. The native footage that we are using in AE is shot on an HVX200 using the DVCPro HD 720p60 setting. I am trying to stay native all the way thru the process.
We are just made the change from CS3 to CS4 and are using almost all the latest updates as I did a clean install of all applications last week.

Eventually this has been resolved. All footage imported into FCP 6 MUST have an exact frame rate of 23.976 otherwise FCP will NOT like it, i.e. render it properly.
So, NOT 23.98 it must be 23.976. I used Cinema Tools to conform all my footage to that frame rate and Presto! everything is working fine now.

  • EXport Jitter for H.264

I am hoping someone can help because I am baffled...
I create a project in CS5 using P2 footage shot from an HVX200 camera - 1280x720 - 29.97fps. The footage appears as 960x720 in project.
I finished the project and hit File-Export-Media.
In the encoder, I select H.264 - Preset: HDTV 720p High Quality 29.97fps. The output matches the source as 1280x720 Progressive VBR, 1 pass.
I hit export and once it completes I open the mp4 in QT. It is jittery. Never plays right. I open up the movie properties in QT and see H.264, 1280x720, but I also see a data bit rate which is not normally there.
For the life of me, I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong - why this file does not play right.  Just for the hell of it, I exported as FLV 1280x720 and itr was perfect - no jitter.
    Anyone have a suggestion?
    Thanks, Steve

Uninstalling is not the answer to me. I recently completed another project where the footage was shot on an Sony XD Cam and imported as 1440x1080. I exported the exact same way with h.264 – same settings and it plays perfect on QT. I cannot understand why this current project does not. These h.264 videos are being sent to clients and QT and Window Media is what they have to view them. If this doesn’t work, I have to send Flash which looks great through the Adobe Media Player.

  • Turning off frame blending in Adobe Media Encoder

Is there a way to turn off frame blending in Adobe Media Encoder?  I have a bunch of
Flip Mino HD footage (1280x720p) which I wish to convert to P2 720p format so that
I can more easily mix and match it in the Premiere timeline with actual P2 footage
    shot on an HVX200.
I successfully used Media Encoder to perform this task but there is one problem.  The
Flip footage is 30fps and P2 720p is 29.97fps.  So Media Encoder uses frame blending.
The frame blending sometimes creates obnoxious artifacts so I would like to turn it
off but there seems to be no way to do this (or alternatively "conform" the 30fps input
to 29.97fps so that no blending is nescessary).
After Effects CS4 would seem like an alternative since it has nice batch composition
creation and rendering features but it cannot render to the P2 format - it appears to
have a older version of Media Encoder embedded within it - predating P2 support.
I would like a solution that is easily "batchable" as I have several hunderd Flip Mino HD
clips that need to be processed.
You might also ask, why not just import the Flip clips unchanged into Premiere CS4
and mix them with the P2 clips?....I have tried this and it seems to drive Premiere crazy
introducing various crashes and other strange behaviors.  The pre conversion to P2
route seems to work fine.  I just want to get rid of the frame blending.

I happened upon this video just before I made my posting and it doesn't help with the
crashes/hangs.  When I import more than about 20 Flip Mino HD clips it seems to trigger
some sort of memory corruption bug in Premiere.  Some of the clips start to just
show as solid green in their thumbnail views in the timeline and scrubbing the timeline
eventually hangs Premiere altogether.  This is reproducible on two different computers
although the exact symptoms change slightly each time it is tried.  Importing only 3 or 4
clips actually seems to work, at least for a short while.
The problems happen even if the only thing imported into the project are Mino footage and
the Sequence is set to Desktop or XDCAM mode.  So the crashes have nothing to do
    with P2 editing mode.
The same installation of Premiere CS4 on one of these computers has been just used to
successfully edit and render out a P2 project with hundreds of clips, stills and titles so the
basic CS4 installation seems to be solid.
I'll eventually file a bug report but for now I'm more interested in getting the job done.
