HVX200 footage captured on a DV deck?

Is it possible to use a standard miniDV deck to capture footage shot on a HVX200? Or do I need to rent a specific deck?
Thanks!
Matt

You cannot record DVCProHD to tape on a Panasonic HVX200.
With that cam, you can only record to p2 cards, a Focus FS-100, to a laptop using FCP 5.1.4 or better or Scopebox or HD Monitor.
Has someone told you differently?

  • HVX200 footage and timeline with 16mm telecine footage?

I am shooting a documentary with mostly HVX200 footage in the 720p 24PN mode. I am also shooting about 30 minutes of 16mm footage then doing a telecine pass with my colorist. How can I keep everything in the same format? I was thinking I could rent the Panasonic AJ-HD1200A deck and bring it to my telecine session so they can patch it into their bay/system. I could lay down the 16mm transfer down to DVCPROHD with that deck correct? Is there a special setting on the deck where I could lay it down as 23.98 to match my HVX200 material? Or does it lay it down as 60p and I just capture it at 23.98? Any suggestions would be great!

Chris. It's Saturday. The weekend. The morning after Cinco de Mayo. If we aren't with our families, or recovering from hangovers or enjoying a day off...then we are working...like me. sigh.
If they telecine to DVCPRO HD, they will have to do it at 720p24 but at 59.94 fps. This way when you capture it, you choose 720p24 and the advanced pulldown SHOULD be removed.
But I cannot say for sure...for I haven't done this nor do I have the deck. But I do know that 720p24 footage shot at 60fps on a varicam removes the pulldown nicely to 23.98 and it intercuts well with 24PN footage from the HVX. But the varicam flags the footage as 23.98 while recording 59.94. I am not sure if the HD1200 deck can as well.
You can try posting this onthe Creative Cow in the FCP forum or even the Varicam forum. A few people there have those decks.

  • How do I get HVX200 footage into Final Cut 4.5?

This may be a redundant question, and I am currently in the process of waiting for my upgrade to Final Cut Studio to arrive in the mail, but in the meantime, just received a HVX200 camera in the mail yesterday and was wondering if it is possible to get the footage in my computer. I followed the instructions in the operation manual and my G5 did recognize the camera as a separate drive via Firewire on the desktop which is full of .mxf files. Being new to HD video, I just did a basic Firewire hook-up from the camera straight into the computer and hoped that I would be able to capture the footage via Final Cut 4.5 HD. Obviously I was wrong. After doing some research, I've seen several ways of getting the footage into the system, most of which refer to the latest version of Final Cut Studio, but nothing much on how to get it into 4.5 other than some confusing mentions of somehow converting the footage in Quicktime files. If the .mxf files can be converted into Quicktime and then edited in Final Cut 4.5 until my upgrade arrives in the mail, can someone please help me with this? The bad news is as of now I only have Mac OS X version 10.3.7. I do plan on upgrading very soon, but was curious if it is still possible to make the HD footage editable on the system I currently are running - 10.3.7 and FC 4.5. If anybody could help, I would appreciate it very much.
    Mac G5 Dual-Processor with Final Cut HD 4.5   Mac OS X (10.3.7)

Do I have to be running the latest version of Tiger for this to work? I ask because the new Quicktime download method did not work from OS 10.3.9. Maybe I'm still doing something wrong. Either way, I'm completely confused. First of all, what mode does the HVX200 need to be in? MCR/VCR or PC/DUB mode? My main question is how to convert those .mxf files into editable and viewable Quicktime files. Can I select a "convert" option somewhere? Am I overlooking something here completely? The thing that baffles me is the Firewire cable running from the tower to the camera displays the HVX200 files on my desktop under a white-drive icon that reads "no name". I just so badly want to grab them and convert them to editable Quicktime files that my 4.5 Version of Final Cut will import and recognize. Looks like that would be a relatively easy thing to do, but apparently not. Honestly, all that I got out of the link that you attached was apparently just how to upgrade to the latest version of Quicktime which would recognize "XL1" footage, not HVX200 HD footage. The posting didn't appear to be directed towards the HVX200/FCP 4.5 solely.
In your original posting, you mentioned that FCP 4.5 would actually allow HVX200 footage in or at least knew a way to go about getting the footage into a system like mine. My question is, from your personal experience, can you give me a more accurate step-by-step description of what I need to do from hooking up the HVX200 to the G5 tower via Firewire and so on....
It just seems that only upgrading Quicktime doesn't really get me anywhere near where I need to be. As I just try to figure out the common-sense of this all, it sounds like the computer IS recognizing the camera and the P2 card - hence the icon the appears on my desktop full of my video files labeled as .mxf files. So from here, the only thing that I can figure is that the only way to see my clips are to convert those files into another file (such as Quicktime) that FCP 4.5 wouldn't have any trouble reading??? CORRECT???? Seems like this is the only way it's gonna fly on the system I have...until I get the FCS upgrade. That said, I've got a two week wait and I'm impatient to watch my footage on my high quality Apple monitor!!
Sorry to be a bother about this, but any additional help is welcomed!

  • Long encoding times for footage captured with BMD H.264 Pro Recorder

    Hi there,
I'm experiencing very long render times when encoding footage captured with the BMD H.264 Pro Recorder. Watching it encode (either through Premiere CS6, or AME) it looks like the encoding stops for periods of time. With other footage I can encode a 50 minute project in about 15-20 minutes, encoding with footage from the Pro Recorder is almost 1:1 in terms of project length/encode time.
The Pro Recorder uses QuickTime for H.264 captures, so don't know if that is causing issues. Don't seem to have the same issue with other H.264 formats.
    System Info:
    Windows 8 Enterprise (RTM)
HP Z820 with dual hexcore processors, 32GB RAM
Quadro 2000 plus Tesla for Maximus configuration
All latest updates have been installed (yesterday)
    MPE is enabled for project
Also tested on a Z800 with Windows 7 and got same results
Editing the footage is fast and playback through timeline looks great. Anyone have a suggestion?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

QuickTime is still a 32 bit process and the 64 bit PP has to use a sort of "band-aid" to make QuickTime files work right.  It's possible that might slow things down.

  • Device Control Capture from Beta SP Deck into a G-4, Using Firewire ???

    Hello,
I have been told by many people that it is possible to capture video with device control from a Beta SP deck, if you have the correct setup. But no one seems to be able to tell me exactly how using a G-4 Dual 1.25, or G-5 single processor computer. What I'm hoping to do is establish a serial interface that will allow for device control from a RS-422 circumstance. I'm hoping that I can do this, and still capture using DV- I don't want to have to resort to using a video capture card, for an assortment of reasons that I won't get into.
Question: Is there anyone out there converting video from a beta sp deck to firewire in FCP, using device control, and if so, what is your set up?
    Thanks!

  • Capture problem when capturing from DVCPro HD Deck

I'm using Premier Pro Creative Cloud and can't seem to capture from my Panasonic HDX900 camera via IEEE firewire to my PC. My footage is 1080 60i.  I can't control the camera remotely or see images in the capture monitor.  The record and shuttle controls are grey-out. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? • Yellow Cast to HVX200 Footage in FCP - but fine on NTSC Monitor

    Dear Folks:
I am shooting two cameras with an HVX200 and an HMC150 in a room where the only light source is daylight-bulbed Kinoflos. The lights are fixed, as it the set. Nothing changes. There are no windows.
I have two NTSC monitors, both set to camera bars.
I use manual white balance. I use a big white card (a foamcore board).
The first day, the image looked perfectly white balanced on the NTSC monitors. We ingested the footage through Final Cut Pro. It matched the look we saw on the NTSC monitors on several macs.
The second day, however, the image had a YELLOW cast to it when ingested via Log and Transfer.
Why would it look clean and white on the NTSC monitors and yellow on various macs?
    Thanks!

First off, are you saying there is a difference between Day One and Day Two...? or...
Just a difference between NTSC and mac display?
Are there any common values in the days that can be sampled and compared numerically? For example some thing "white" in day one is R=235, G=235, B=235 and on day two is R=235, G=235, B=190?
Two other things off the top of my head might be the white balance went away overnight (if you didn't balance again on the second day), or one of your kinos went "sour".
Not likely but you may be getting a subtractive dynamic contrast in the shadows?
Or, more likely, there is a white point difference between the NTSC monitors and the macs. Generally speaking, most macs set for broadcast-emulation sit around D65, while many, many ntsc monitors can range from D65 all the way up to about 9500, which is VERY blue, but your eye-brain adapts to that and then it becomes a VERY bright "white".... against which everything else will look yellow.

  • HVX200 footage color shift

I have a finished project in FCP 5.0.4.
It was originally mxf masters from P2 cards from an HVX200
It looks awesome. It's running at 23.98 in a native sequence of 980x720.
Now that I am done editing, I want to post the finished quickime on the web.
Everytime I encode in compressor, or FCP, the great colors all die and the thing looks like crap. The contrast dies too.
I'l tried pre processing some gamma shifts the opposite way, to try and over compensate.
Nothing has worked and I love how the original footage looks, but as soon as I make the thing into a broadband high web movie, it looks really bad.
    please help!!!!

I have had so much luck in the past using the 'broadband-high' default settings from FCP. I have been working a lot with 720x486 10 bit uncompressed files that I then compress and down-res using the default 'broadband-high.' And with this setup, the colors stay exactly the same and I can barely see any compression artifacts. Now that I am in HD, first of all I have to use a custom pixel dimension, I am trying half at 640x360, but keeping all the other settings from 'broadband-high' the same. I am making an .mov file.
I color corrected the whole project to be slightly washed out, I took the black levels in FCP and made them blue, I was trying to simulate an old polaroid feel. But in the .mov file conversion process, things get even more washed out and the chroma and contrast go off even more than I wanted.
I read somewhere about the HD color space versus SD color space, is something happening there? I did output a movie that was a native(same compression as the footage) 720p24 file at 1280x720 and not 960x720. And it looks perfect, but I can't really post that on the web.

  • Footage captured without audio

I'm hoping someone might be able to enlighten me with possible causes of the following issue.
I've been capturing Digi Beta via Kona LH onto an internal drive (not the system drive) as Apple Pro Res HQ PAL. Even thought 2 stereo tracks have been captured, there is no audio on them, but there is audio on the tape.
The same computer has captured to an external FW800 drive without any issues using the same capture settings, also the same since when capturing direct to Fibre optic SAN. Unfortunately due to a crashing problem, I've clean installed Final Cut on the system again so I can't trace much info.
Any thoughts or advice on would could have occurred would be appreciated.
Specs- Intel Quad Core Mac Pro OSX 10.5.8, running Final Cut Pro 6.0.4.

What is your video connection from DigiBeta to the Kona?
    SDI or Component?
What is your audio connection from DigiBeta to the Kona?
AES/EBU or Analog or are trying to embed it in the SDI?
Check you AJA control panel to verify where it thinks the audio should come from.
If the source is embedded audio in SDI, make sure the deck is set to send out audio on the SDI cable.
If you did capture audio, you should see levels bouncing on your FCP audio level meter and make sure they show a waveform in the viewer window.

  • Footage captured via Log & Transfer flickers

    Hello!
We are using a Sony HDR-XR550 camcorder with the following settings on the camera:
    frame size: 1440x1080
    video rate: 29.97 fps
    compressor: apple ProRes 422
    data rate: 14.8-15.1 MB/sec
    audio: 48 kHz
    pixel aspect HD 1440x1080
    field dominance: upper (odd)
I've imported the footage, and on playback it flickers. I've tried changing the sequence presets to match the camera settings, and it still flickers.
Any ideas on how to resolve this issue? Or what the problem could be?
(This is the first time we've used this camera. Usually use a Panasonic HD camera where the settings are 960x720 frame size; 23.98 fps video rate; DVCPRO HD 720p60 compressor; 5.9 MB/sec Data rate; 48kHz audio rate)
    Thanks!
    -Tracy

However, my issue at this point is that this footage is imported onto the computer's hard drive, and has been erased from the Sony Handycam.
Wait...what? WHAT? Why the HECK did you/they do that? No no no no no no no no no no NO NO! Do you take TAPES that you shoot, capture them, then record over them? Throw them out? Then why do you do this with tapeless media?
You need to watch this tutorial. And EVERYONE THERE needs to watch this tutorial: Tapeless Workflow for FCP 7 Tutorial
NEVER EVER EVER import from the tapeless media, then erase it. BACKUP! If you did this properly, you wouldn't have to worry about this...just reimport and you'd be fixed. NOW you see one reason why you backup the footage.
    Lordy...

  • Capturing from a DV deck

I have been trying to capture a DV tape from a deck using Final Cut Pro 6, though there are timecode breaks on the tape so it is not working. Someone on the Final Cut Pro message board suggested using iMovie to do this.
    1. Can I capture in iMovie using a DV deck?
    2. Where is the option to do this?
    Thanks!

Can I capture in iMovie using a DV deck?
It will probably allow you to do this if the devices is recognized or assumed to be a camcorder device by iMovie '08. As to the timecode breaks, if it imports from the device, they will likely be interpreted as breaks between clips.
Where is the option to do this?
Use the "Import from Camera" File menu option.

  • JVC SD 24p footage capture settings

So I've been working on a short for the past few months, and just when I thought it was all ready to go, I exported for DVD and discovered that something was wrong with the footage -- somehow, in the capturing process, we dropped a frame and every 5th frame was duplicated. I am now trying to recapture the footage properly, but find that no matter what settings I tweak, the end result is the same. Can someone please tell me the proper capturing settings for footage shot in SD 24p with a JVC GY-HD camera? I do know that this is a stupid question, but hopefully that means someone will have a quick and useful answer -- which will be SO MUCH APPRECIATED. Many thanks!

I think I'd just capture useing the easy setup for DV NTSC, and use "firewire Basic" as a device control setting for that camera.
24p is recorded at 29.97 with a pulldown added, and you needn't remove this pulldown for any real gain with short programs.

  • Error when importing footage captured with I-Movie!

    Hi there -
Using the latest version of I-Movie..., latest everything (new G5)
I create a new blank project - and try importing the footage I captured previously in I-Movie.
I select the project file containing the captured footage, and select "import"......and..........
    I get the error message:
    ERROR DURING IMPORT
The file could not be imported: The file “Macintosh HD/Users/xxx/Movies/Ireland 2” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -43
    What's that all about?
Should be do-able - no? It's the latest version of Quicktime, OSX etc.
(there are no plugins in the plugins folder for I-Movie by the way)
    Pls help!

    Hi Florence,
just to see, if I understood correctly:
you have project A, with some captured video...
now, you have a new project B
    you choose "import"
and select "project A" for importing?
no, that doesn't work with iMHD...
your imported footage of project A is hiddin in a socalled "package" (in earlier versions ofIm you could see a "media folder", containing single .dv files...) you cannot import pkg into iM......
    switch to finder
ctrl click - click on project A icon
    choose "show package"
    select "media"
    copy files into new folder
    switch to iM
    import from new folder.....
besides: importing from tape is ... better/best-practise...

  • VHS Capture via the Blackmagic Deck link Extreme 2 card

Is this even possible? I'm trying to capture VHS video with the extreme 2 card and all I get is an image that looks like old time film with the jumping of the frames like it is being hand cranked. I have better results with an anologue to digital converter via firewire, but I thought that the extreme card was suppose to be able to capture pretty much anything.
Cannot figure out the settings to make it a smooth capture.
    Help me, I'm melting.

What settings are you using in FCP? What Easy Setup? How is the deck connected?
I don't know the Decklink software interface all that well, I use AJA. But with the AJA you have to tell the card via the AJA Control Panel what connection you are routing to the card and which it should use. It might be expecting a Component signal and you are feeding it a composite one.

  • A good miniDV camera for footage capture for FC6?

I've got a Macbook Pro and FC6 and I'm looking to buy a miniDV camera just for the purpose of capturing my footage. I'm looking for a cheap camera, like the Samsung SC-D382, but don't know what sort of specifications to look for. Can I use a USB cable to capture footage, or does it need to be a 6 pin firewire cable? Also, does anyone have any recommendations regarding cheap but good cameras for capturing? Thanks!

look for a camera that also has A/V inputs and will pass them through to firewire. That way, if the need arises, you can capture from an analog source such as a VCR (archiving, perhaps). This is a great budget solution, as dedicated D/A converters can cost as much as or more than a cheap miniDV camera.
