FTP share point setup

ok..I am running sever 10.3 and I am trying to setp share points, I have spent the last few days searching this board and have not found the answer I need, maybe I missed it. I need to setup the server to allow ftp to certain share points based off of the login username and password, when I test the user names on the local network I see only what I have specified that user to see, when I log in threw an ftp program I see the entire root folder, though the root folder is not one of the share points. The boss feels we should not have to purchase a 3rd part ftp program to do this. How do I get the accounts to do via ftp app what they are doing via local network?

I logged into the FTP share on my Mac, and even through logged in using the owner of the share, I can't move or create folders/documents. If I Get Info for the share on my Mac the permissions are set as ready only?
If you're looking at the FTP share in the Finder, that's how it is. The Finder does not support read-write FTP, only read-only.
As for the Windows users not getting any response, that seems weird to me. Worst case they should get an access denied message. If they are not getting any response at all then I'm guessing the URL is correct - either that or Windows doesn't support authenticated FTP.
If this is a LAN network there really is no need (or even reason) to use FTP at all. AFP is far preferable for Mac clients, and SMB for Windows clients.

  • FTP - Share Points Disapearing

On our server I've setup FTP access to certain groups. One being a public group - only access to one directory (public ftp) and another group which has access to all share points. Permissions are set using ACLs for both groups to their respective directories.
So now when a user logs in that has access to all share points, we don't see all the share points anymore we only see the public share point. If I turn off FTP as a protocol for all the share points - all the aliases show up. Turn on the protocol they disappear.
    Any ideas insight?

Ok, solved. It was simply a permissions issue with the symbolic links. I assumed that since the server automatically generated these when you turn on FTP sharing that it would grant read access for everyone.
Well I was mistaken - had to update the permissions on the links to allow everyone read access. They now show up and users can browse the directories that they have permission to.

  • How can I resolve slow browsing in finder when connected to a share point on a linux box?

    Hi,
I am having huge difficulties when browsing a share point that is on a Linux box. I am connecting to it with a Macbook Pro running Lion 10.7.5.
Initially there was an SMB share point setup on the server which was extremely slow to browse. I then setup an AFP sharepoint thinking that would help with the issue but it hasn't made a difference at all. The issue is that files take forever to load when browsing using Finder. Moving between folders on the sharepoint takes extremely long since files are slow to load.
There are very few options available on line to help with this and so far none of them have worked. I think the problem is with Finder and the way it indexes the files but I could be wrong.
    Please help!

Hey Brenda, this isn't 'Safari' I believe this is your Modem/Router to solve this issue please look on the bottom/side of your internet box, and find the codes. But I also believe, when starting up your modem/ Internet box when you first actually received it you had to sign up, this is the only way in order for you to receive this message. Please contact your Internet providers.
    Try Uninstalling Safari!
Have you tried to press cancel to see if that helps?

  • FTP root & share points - how can I disable the latter?

I'm new to the Mac world and I'm in the process of configuring a Mac OS X server to run Contribute 3.
The server will be used to host a single site and the FTP is working now.
Question is, how can share points be disabled?
In the FTP root (libary/webserver/documents/) the following 3 files always get created automatically (I've tried deleting them as root):
    Groups
    Public
    Users
Is there a way to disable them? I was thinking of placing the website one folder away from the ftp root, but that could make things too complicated for users.
    Please advise!

    Anyone?
I removed the share points in the Workgroup Manager but they still show up when I ftp into the server (set to ftp root & share points).
Does anyone know how to get rid of them permanently?
If that is all it should take, please post... The system has been unable to save all settings as an account was deleted and the OS placed certain folders into the "unkown" ownership which is the topic in another thread:

  • Workgroup Manager won't show available volumes/folders to setup share point

Server 10.4.11: open Workgroup Manager and select the Sharing panel.
Clicking the "Share Points" tab displays my current share points as expected.
But clicking the "All" tab shows a +completely blank window+: no volumes or folders at all!
(The button at the bottom to mount or unmount a remote NFS volume appears, but I've never used it and I don't know what good it might be.)
Accessing the server with the 10.5 version of Workgroup Manger from a Leopard client gives the same behavior.

Never mind. Rebooted the machine and it's back to normal. Go figure.

  • Different passwords for different share points on 1 server?

On a lion server I have two share points.
A 'general' is accessible for all users, a 'confidential' is for a select group of users.
The permissions are set and the select group have their server access password in their key chain.
The server password is stored in a separate key chain ie. not in the login key chain.
The select users connect to the server and allways mount the 'general' share point.
The 'confidential' share point is mounted only when needed and unmounted afterward.
Problem is when the users walk away from their computer and forget to lock the computer or to completely disconnect from the server, which is generally very inconvenient because of open documents.
"Unmounting" the confidential share in my setup is not really putting it away securely because at that moment, anyone can sit down at that computer and mount 'confidential' because the login credentials were already given when mounting 'general'.
Is there any way, lest having Parallels running another Lion server that shares the 'confidential' mount point, to force users to enter a password before 'confidential' can be mounted WHILE 'general'  IS ALREADY MOUNTED?
In other words, can credential exchange be tied to share point mounting time rather than to server connection time and thus be different for different shares and allow for share-specific unmounting, effectively locking it away?

    Has nobody done this before?

  • I require a 32 bit version of Firefox to process a single instruction in Share Point. Where can I get the 32 bit version of Firefox at any level?

I am trying to utilize a function in SharePoint to permit me to open a library in Explorer mode. The function is available on the Share Point page and when I select the function my IE browser stops working. Unfortunately IE at it's current setup on my system is required for most internal applications. Chrome will not enable most of the functions in the Share Point site so that browser is unusable for my purposes. Upon research the current potential resolution to my problem is to run a 32 bit browser to enable my function. Due to the above mentioned limitations I require a 32 bit version of Firefox but the download only provides a 64 bit version because my system is 64 bit. How can I get a 32 bit version of Firefox?

    </blockquote>
For what OS as Firefox for Windows from [https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ www.mozilla.org] is only Win32 and will work on 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. Firefox for Mac OSX is a combined 32/64 and There are separate 32-bit and 64-bit versions for Linux.
Where are you downloading Firefox to think it is a 64-bit version?
The WOW64 in a browser useragent on Windows means it is a 32-bit application running of 64-bit Windows.

  • Share point in server admin not working correctly... I think

I suspect that the share point in server admin is not working correctly. In workgroup manager when I click on a user and then click on the "home" tab, under the full path field I see a file path of:
    afp://server.mydomain.com/Users
However if I go to Server Admin -> AFP -> Share Points then click on the Users share and then click on the share point tab below, enable auto mount is disabled. How can this be possible? I thought for a directory to show up in home in workgroup manager it had to be set as an auto mount. Has something possibly corrupted? And what?

Here's a bit more information about our setup and our experiences with Apple's CUPS implementation:
On the server, all printer queues are set up with only lpr and ipp sharing enabled with the PPD setting for each printer set to Generic Postscript. We found that setting the PPD to the printer specific one on the server caused problems when clients tried to use printer specific options, like paper tray selection, etc.. The selection would be undone, apparently because the driver on the server would override the previous settings. Using Generic Postscript allows the client PPD settings to go through unmodified. Our printers are general a mix of HP LaserJets and some Sharp Copiers.
All clients use lpd to the server queues with the printers' actual PPDs configured. Using ipp is superior in that printer feedback (jams, out of toner, etc) makes it back to the clients, but ipp only works when the client, the server, and the printer are on the same network. If the ipp client is not on the same network, the client spooler immediately goes into a paused state and the print job is stuck on the client.
Using lpd to the server queues works reliably, but there is no feedback to the client. Jobs disappear from the client queue and go to the server, appearing to the user as a successful print. If the printer is down, there's nothing they can see or do about it.

  • Custom NFS share point directory showing up on all network machines

    Hi,
I'm in the process of migrating our 10.4 PowerMac server to a Mac Pro (running 10.5). I've been trying to recreate our 10.4 server setup as much as possible and so far I've only come across one annoying issue.
We have fink installed on the server and under our 10.4 setup the /sw directory was set up as an NFS automounted share point with a custom mount point of '/sw'. I.e. users logging into client machines saw a /sw directory and could work with that. This made it easier to add fink packages as I only needed to do this on one machine (the server). This setup worked very well under 10.4 and had been working stably for the last couple of years.
As we now have (for another month or two at least) a mix of intel and Power PC machines, I don't want to share out the (intel) server version of fink to all clients. In Server Admin, I have chosen to set the NFS protocol options to specify the IP address of just one client (an intel machine). I am only using NFS to share this directory. The plan is to add more client IP addresses as we get more intel machines.
This works for the one intel client machine. Logging in via the GUI or via ssh allows you to run programs located under the /sw directory. The problem is that a phantom /sw directory appears on all client machines, even though their IP addresses are not specified in Server Admin. The /sw directory has root/wheel permissions (for user/group) and attempting to list its contents returns 'Operation not permitted' (even with 'sudo ls /sw').
If I use Directory Utility to remove the connection to the Directory server on our main server, then the /sw directory becomes owned by root/admin and I can remove it (it appears empty). Reconnecting to the Directory Server changes the permissions back to root/wheel. It is also worth noting that when I first installed fink on the server (in /sw) the act of making this a share point also changed the permissions on /sw to root/wheel meaning that I couldn't access the fink programs that I had only just installed (this forced me to reinstall fink in /Volumes/Data/fink).
Has anyone else noticed this behavior? It almost seems like Server Admin is not honoring the list of IP addresses that are being listed as targets for client machines. I had planned to install fink locally on the PowerPC clients until we upgrade them to intel machines. However, I would then also have to install fink somewhere other than /sw as I can't write to that directory. I would presume that this behavior should happen on any NFS share point that is trying to automount to a custom mount point on a client. Can anyone else verify this?
    Regards,
    Keith

As a footnote. I have now removed my shared fink installation. It is no longer listed as an NFS sharepoint in Server Admin and running the 'showmount -e' command does not list it. However, a /sw directory is still being created on the server and on the client machines on our network.
This is perplexing and frustrating. There is no sharepoint any more. I rebooted the server but it makes no difference. I removed the /sw directory (on the server) by booting the machine in target firewire mode and removing it by using a 2nd machine. But following the restart, it appeared again.
This suggests that once you make any custom mountpoint (using NFS sharing) then you will forever be stuck with a directory at the root level of all your clients which you can not remove.

  • ACL on share points doesn't seem to work

    Hi Everyone,
I have a server set up, with a series of share points on it. One of those folders is "Marketing", and the Marketing team has a boss, who is the only guy who should be able to create folders within that share.
The people in the Marketing group, should have access to write and delete files, but not create folders.
    Here's the setup:
    Users/Groups:
    John (boss)
Roger (one of the Marketing employees)
John and Roger both belong to the Marketing group
    Share point ACL:
Marketing / Allow / Custom ( full read, write attributes, write extended attributes, create files, delete )  but not create folder, delete subfolders and files
John / Allow / Full Access
As last detail, all users are on Apple computers.
    Problem
John is able to do everything he should, create files, folders, etc.
Roger on the other hand, can only read.
    Question
Does the ability to write files, require the ability to write folders?  If I let Marketing group write folders, Roger's access works.  If so, is there a workaround?
    Thanks!

I know that order of the permissions in the acl window is relevant, from what ive learned on here based on different issues.  I think if you have a deny permission, and further down you have an allow permission so to speak, the allow overides.

  • Can't mount share points over VPN after moving server

I'm tearing my hair out over this one. We have a server that was located in our office. I just moved it downtown to a colo center (no longer in office) and set up VPN access.
However, nobody is able to mount the server share points, even though the connection to the VPN seems to work fine (e.g.: I choose "connect to L2TP..." and it connects, VPN icon shows I am online with the server).
Any attempt to mount a share point fails. I've tried using afp://servername.com and I've tried afp://64.xx.xx.xx (where that's the machine's public IP address). Am I supposed to use a different address (such as an internal 192 address that works over the VPN) or should I be able to mount the afp point using the server public domain name? Should I try NFS?
Any help would be appreciated -- really need to get access to this system's files again! Thank you!

    Morris Zwick wrote:
And does anyone know which IP you enter for your sites in the web service? The public static IP or the internal private static IP?
For the external DNS server I am sure you have already deduced that it should be the static IP issued you by Comcast and this will be forwarded by your router to your server.
For your internal DNS server you could use either the internal LAN IP, or the external IP although the later might be affected by your firewall so this you will need to test.
For the Web Server service in Server admin, if your only running a single website you could avoid the issue by just using the wildcard entry which will respond to any IP address, so this would be an empty host name and an IP address of *
In fact you don't have to specify an IP address you could just use the hostname, so it will listen to traffic arriving at your server addressed to any IP address and as long as the URL that was requested includes the hostname you define for the site it will get responded to. So if as an example you have two websites you want to serve
    www.example.com
    site2.example.com
then as long as both have the IP address for the site as an * (asterisk) then both should work as separate sites for traffic addressed to either the LAN or WAN IP address of the server.
You will still need to use two IP addresses on the server to enable VPN, you could use a USB Ethernet adapter for the second one. Port forwarding for VPN is not as simple as other traffic as VPN requires traffic different to the standard IP and UDP packets. Routers that support 'VPN Passthrough' are specifically designed to accomodate this but I don't know if the AirPort Extreme does this. I have also found PPTP copes better with this sort of setup than L2TP although PPTP is generally regarded as less secure.

    Hi,
For installing SharePoint 2013 SP1 Prerequisite on Windows 2012 R2, you can run the PowerShell Script of Ed (DareDevil57):

  • Trouble Creating Share Point via 'sharing' Command

I'm having trouble creating a share point via the command line using the 'sharing' utility. Basically just trying to script the creation of a /WindowsShares/ share via SMB.
    Here is the command:
    <pre class=command>sharing -a /WindowsShares/ -n WindowsShares -s 001 -g 000 -i 00 -o 0 -t 1'</pre>
It seems like everything works. <pre class=command>sharing -l</pre> shows this:
    <pre class=command>name: WindowsShares
    path: /WindowsShares/
    afp: {
    name: WindowsShares
    shared: 0
    guest access: 0
    inherit perms: 0
    ftp: {
    name: WindowsShares
    shared: 0
    guest access: 0
    smb: {
    name: WindowsShares
    shared: 1
    guest access: 0
    inherit perms: 0
    oplocks: 0
    strict locking: 1
    directory mask: 493
    create mask: 420
    }</pre>
However, it doesn't seem to write anything to the /etc/smb.conf file... So nothing works.
If I enter the following in smb.conf the share does work:
    <pre class=command>[WindowsShares]
    oplocks = 0
    map archive = no
    vfs objects = darwin_acls
    path = /WindowsShares
    read only = no
    strict locking = 1
    inherit permissions = 0
    comment = macosx
    create mask = 0644
    guest ok = 0
    directory mask = 0755</pre>
However, even after entering this information - when I check 'Share Points' within WGM the share IS listed - but the 'Share this item and its contents' is NOT checked and thus, is confusing and can't be modified from WGM.
Am I missing something when I am creating this share via the CLI?
I assumed using 'sharing' worked the same way as using WGM and checking 'Share this item and its contents' - that works perfectly.
I tried this with 10.4.8 and 10.4.9 Server (Universal).
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Hi Gary,
    Thanks for the reply...
I ran the 'serveradmin' command to discover the SMB settings before and after the change via WGM. I restarted the SMB service as well...
    <pre class=command>S999EDC1:~ root# serveradmin settings smb:\*
    smb:encrypt passwords = yes
    smb:log level = 2
    smb:display charset = "UTF-8-MAC"
    smb:security = "ads"
    smb:deadtime = 5
    smb:hide dot files = "yes"
    smb:guest account = "unknown"
    smb:client ntlmv2 auth = "yes"
    smb:preferred master = no
    smb:defer sharing violations = "no"
    smb:adminCommands:homes = yes
    smb:adminCommands:serverRole = "domainmember"
    smb:adminCommands:ldapRole = "1.1 - hosting a master LDAP directory server\n"
    smb:allow trusted domains = yes
    smb:netbios name = "S999EDC1"
    smb:lanman auth = "YES"
    smb:vfs objects = "darwin_acls"
    smb:wins support = no
    smb:brlm = "yes"
    smb:max smbd processes = 0
    smb:server string = "S999EDC1 OS X Server"
    smb:os level = 8
    smb:domain logons = no
    smb:passdb backend = "opendirectorysam guest"
    smb:dos charset = "CP437"
    smb:realm = "EDU.CBE.AB.CA"
    smb:unix charset = "UTF-8-MAC"
    smb:auth methods = "guest opendirectory"
    smb:local master = no
    smb:domain master = no
    smb:map to guest = "Never"
    smb:use spnego = yes
    smb:printer admin = "@admin, @staff"
    smb:ntlm auth = "YES"
    smb:workgroup = "CBEEDU"</pre>
The only difference was that smb:workgroup = "CBEEDU" and smb:log level = 2 were reversed. The settings were the same though. Thought that was odd.
When making the change via 'sharing', there is no change.
Is there any other documentation on 'sharing' other than the man page and CLI Guide from Apple? I haven't been able to find anything concrete.

  • I have one Windows 7 machine that can't map drive to Lion Share Point?

I setup a Lion mac mini server.  Mac and Windows clients all can map a drive to the Lion share points with the exception of one Windows 7 machine.  When mapping I continually get "the specified network password is not correct" message regardless of which credentials I use.  I tried changing the win7 network settings and turning off the firewall but nothing has allowed a connection to happen yet.  Any help is appreciated !!!

Also, when browsing the network and choosing the server in the list, I get a login prompt with the error at the bottom "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password."  It's almost like it is trying to use some other credentials automatically?
