Functions in numbers

hi all,
I am a medical doctor. I am trying to use numbers for evaluating Multiple Choice Questions.
I want a function two compare two cells.
If both the entries are equal it should return 1.
If both the entries are different it should return -1.
If one cell is blank, it should return 0.
Basically I am comparing the "answer KEYs" with the students' "response".
Kindly help.

Hi Dr Kh,
There are probably more elegant solutions but this is one way, I think:
=IF(LEN(Key)×LEN(Response)=0,0,IF(Key=Response,1,−1))

there is no filter function in numbers for ipad, its very discouraging,as a ipad fan, even nokia lumia providing filter function in excel in there low cost mobile.
APPLE KINDLY PROVIDE THIS FEATURE AS UPDATE SOON,COZ I WORK ON EXCEL N NUMBERS IN MY IPAD IS DEAD WITH OUT FILTER FUNCTION,I CAN NOT TRAVEL WITH MY IPAD DUE TO THIS REASON,AS I HAVE TO BE IN FIELD WITH SALES FORCE SO I BOUGHT IPAD.

Probably you know that the new version of Numbers for iOS uses the filters created in the Numbers for Mac version.
It's not the best solution but it helps (of course, if you have a Mac!)

  • Using the lookup function in Numbers '09

I'm looking for the way to have the lookup function in Numbers '09 return an error for a non-exact match.  Eg. I want an invalid part number to state this, but currently all I can get is the return of data for the closest match.  Thank you.

when you use the VLOOKUP() function the last, optional, argument can request and exact match.  When an exact match is not available VLOOKUP() will return an error.
you can use the IFERROR() function to trap errors like this:
    =IFERROR(<FUNCTION_TO_TRY>, "NOT FOUND")
In your case.... if <FUNCTION_TO_TRY> is you VLOOKUP(<WHAT_TO_FIND>, <RANGE>, <COLUMN>, 0), the "0" specifies exact match and you could then place all this in the IFERROR() like this:
    =IFERROR(VLOOKUP(<WHAT_TO_FIND>, <RANGE>, <COLUMN>, 0) "NOT FOUND")
<WHAT_TO_FIND> is what to look for,
    <RANGE> is where to look,
<COLUMN> is the number of the column in the range you want to return

  • Is there a equivalent of "Data Validation" function in Numbers?

Hi, I think this question have been asked before in 2009. But there's no conclusive answer. I just imported a medium complexity xlsx sheet into Numbers, "data validation have been removed data retained" message appeared. Is there a equivalent function in Numbers? Or can we construct one? The reason this is important is when using the Macs we are ok and less likely to "fat finger" the data entry. However with a iPad and especially the iPhone, we are more likely to "fat finger" the data entry and therefore a scroll wheel or drop-down list function will help.
If anyone has a helpful answer that will be great!

"Data Validation" as such is not supported in Numbers.
Numbers '09 does support two means of restricting data choices to a pre-determined list of choices:
Pop-up menu is a cell format that provides a pop-up list of choices from which a value may be selected. Value not on the menu cannot be inserted (except by changing the cell's format, then entering the values manually).
Slider and Stepper are two more cell formats. Both provide a mechanism for inserting numeric values, with the minimum, maximum and increment values set in the cell format inspector.
The numeric values set by the Slider or Stepper can be used, in a separate cell, to lookup a text value from a table of possible values.
The Numbers for iOS feature set is a subset of the one available in Numbers '09. I don't know if Pop-up menus, Sliders or Steppers are supported in the iOS version,

  • Is there a 1/x function in Numbers?

Is there a 1/x function in Numbers?

Thanks. How would I construct a formula that contains a relative cell divided by an absolute cell. This yields a number like 102% or 97%, which I'd rather have displayed as 2% or (negative) 3%?
What I'm trying to do is track values that change periodically divided by a basis (which is absolute).
    I'd appreciate your thoughts.
I read this as 'I want to display the percent change from the base amount.'
With the base amount in B1 and the changed values in the rest of column B, place the formula below in column C, starting with C2, then Filling down.
    =(B-$B$1)/$B$1
Format the target cells as Percent, with and many digits as you want of decimal precision.

  • RANK function in Numbers

I am trying to use the rank fuction for a spreadsheet and I can't figure it out.  I have it set in Excel, but I can't transfer to numbers (and still work in excel).
I have 3 values in the same column:
    M13 = 346
    M27 = 352
    M41 = 331
I need to rank these using 1st, 2nd, 3rd, with the results posting to the following cells:
    M14
    M28
    M42
    Any help?
    Thanks!

  • How do I add moving averages to my time series graph is there a function on numbers on tr iMac?

I've created a time series graph on numbers on my iMac but I need to add moving averages. Is there a function an if so where is it and if not is there a way to get around it

    Badunit,
Here is an example plot, data sorted from most recent data at top of the table...
You can see the moving average (of 20) is plotted from right to left.
The Moving Average calculation is now wrong, and should have been calculated and presented from oldest to most recent.
Here is the same data, with table sorted from oldest data at the top of the table.
The moving average is also plotted from right to left, and shows the correct Moving Average for the most recent data.
That is, it is calculated from oldest to most recent, with the last Moving Average data point plotted on "todays" date.
What I want to see is my table displayed from most recent at the top (the top table), and moving average calculated and displayed as per the bottom graph.
Edit: So, think about this some more,
I need an option to tell Numbers to do the Moving Average calculation from the bottom of the table up, not from the top of the table down.

  • Is there a Go To function in Numbers?

I really like the function in AppleWorks‘ to be able to link to other parts of a document. I don’t see anything like this in Numbers unless I am missing it. Can anyone prove me wrong?

    No, but...
There are a couple of techniques you can use to get to a row near the one you want or to a cell in the immediate neighborhood.
Place a single cell table near the row you want to go to on your large table. Give it a name that indicates where it is. Drag it to a location near that row. Clicking the new table's icon in the Sheets List will bring it to the front and into view. from there, it should be a short hop to where you want to be. (Technique suggested some time ago by Jerry.)
"Find" + "Jump to" can be used to jump to a cell determined by its contents. You can define the content of selected cells or of one or more columns to be unique within the table (or to have the same content, and be located in handy places throughout the table).
    • Use command-F to open the Find pane. Type the identifier into the search field, then select the correct location from the list in the pane and press command-J to jump to the selected cell.
With the second technique, you'll get a single item list if the identifier is unique within the table, or a list of all cells containing the identifier if it's in more than one cell.

  • What happened to the autocomplete function  in numbers?

In previous versions where I was entering text in a worksheet, it would offer to complete what I was typing based on previous cells.  This used to save a lot of time.  Now it seems to hav ve no memory of that and I have to type it all.

This is just one of the very latest annoying changes that Apple have made to Numbers. Just how much of my time do Apple intend wasting when then intoduce new versions of an application. I spent a silly amount of time trying to find out how I switched on the auto complete function only to eventually discover that Apple for reasons best know to them have got rid of it.
Has anybody discovered a workaround please?
Feedback has been sent to Apple.

  • Why does NOW function in Numbers supports only Pacific Time? How can I change it to my local time?

When I insert the NOW () function in any cell while using Numbers, it inserts the cell with Date & Time. The problem is that it comes up with Pacific Time. It somehow doesnt support the local time zone. I have made sure that the time zone of my device is set right. Is there anything that can be done to change this?

So what you want is for it to say Lebanon (English)?  If so, see if this helps:

  • IsDateTime() function evaluates numbers 1,2,3 as Date

I'm using following code in format formula it's working but for numeric data i.e. 1,2,3 the function
    IsDateTime(ToText(CurrentFieldValue))
returns true and in turn it shows numbers 1,2 as 31 Dec 1899
    if IsDateTime(ToText(CurrentFieldValue)) then
            ToText(CDate(CurrentFieldValue), "dd MMM yyyy")
    else
        ToText(CurrentFieldValue)

    Brian,
Thanks for your attention again. The SQL query for report dynamically selects fields based on user input and create predefined aliases so data and data type varies.
The field in report can get following three types of data.
    Number (e.g. "1" or "2" or "3" or "3786")
DateTime (e.g. "Dec 10, 2011 11:23:43 AM", I can't tell you the exact date format because it's not string it's Date type from DB)
    Varchar (e.g. "EW533HDS")
User just select data fields to be shown in the report but I want to show Date fields as "10 Dec 2011" instead of default DateTime that is only the problem that caused this thread to open.

  • How do I use the command "F" function in Numbers on my iPhone or iPad?

When I use Numbers on my MacBook Pro I just hit command F and can search for a word then it will tell me exactly which line number that word is on. I want to be able to do in the numbers App on my iPhone or iPad?
    Thanks!

Obviously iOS does not have F keys, so that is out. Tap on the Tools icon (wrench; upper right), then tap Find. Tap search on teh keyboard to move to the next instance.

  • Is there a way to make functions in Numbers visible instead of their results (for demonstration of method)?

  • Exp function and numberic overflow ORA-01426

I've got a problem that has been driving me slightly mad over the past few days. I have been trying to code some actuarial functions that I don't really understand for a data warehouse load on Oracle 9.2.0.6
I am trying to use exp() and power() functions in an insert statement. There is some slightly dodgy data in the source table that is causing a numeric overflow to occur for some rows so I have written a function which calculates the values and returns the result. If an exception occurs, this will be caught and the result set to 0.
The problem I am finding is that within the function, the power() function will successully raise a value_error exception when a problem occurs. However, the exp() function will not. When calling exp() with a large number as the parameter, it will simply return 1e126, which will subsequently cause a numeric overflow when calculating the value for another column.
However, the number overflow will be raised if I use select exp(...) into ... from dual
Is this just a weird inconsistency between the SQL and PL/SQL engine. I thought these problems had been resolved with Oracle 9 but I guess not.
I think I can probably work-around the problem for here, just looking for confirmation that my thoughts are correct.

I hadn't realised that 9.2.0.8 was the most recent patch set for Oracle 9i or that we were a couple of patch sets behind. Maybe I'll have to chase that up but I'm sure we've got a reason for not patching. Whether that would be a good reason or not is probably debateable.
An upgrade to 10g or 11i is in the pipeline but it is currently moving at glacial speed.

    Hello
The first part of your message is quite obvious but in some recent threads some tips where given to fill the gap.
About your "new" question, I just posted a "skeleton".
To get rid of the zero, we must use a more sophisticated formula:
    =IF(ISBLANK(Tableau 1 :: A),"",Tableau 1 :: A)
    which reads:
if the source cell is empty then
put an empty string (a string whose length is zero)
    else
copy the content of the source cell
    end if
    CAUTION
    This formula is not perfect.
An empty source cell becomes _a cell containing an empty string which is not an empty string_
Of course, if the response doen't fit your needs (I may understand that) you may (must ?) *go to "Provide Numbers Feedback" in the "Numbers" menu*, describe what you wish.
Then, cross your fingers, and wait at least for iWork'09
