Funny Characters in Mail 2.1.2

I have been writing back and forth to my cousin in Quebec (I live in California). When he receives my messages this funny character appears after the end of each sentence following the punctuation. It is a solid black diamond with a white question mark in the middle. Does anyone have any idea what it is and what I can do on my end to eliminate it. It sounds like something on his end, but I'm not sure what. I beleive he uses a French-Canadian keyboard. When I receive his emails, they do not have the character and appear to be just fine. The original message I wrote, however, that appears in the reply does contain the pesky character.

Try making sure you are sending Plain Text (Format > Make Plain Text before you send) instead of Rich Text.
Often strange characters are caused by encoding differences. If your recipient is using webmail, he can try using the View > Text Encoding item in his browser menu to change it. If he is using Win Outlook, this note covers the problems that may arise:

  • UTF-8 encoding Funny characters in DB

    Dear All,
    I am Facing a Critical issue which has been lagging, dragging
    from 3 days, still couldn't figure out an issue
    I've an XML file which am Getting it from a Server using
    <cffile action="READ" file="#application.settings.paths"
    variable="xml" charset="utf-8">
    and using an XMLPARSE to parse that xml and trying to insert
    that xml data into Database, in XML i've these
    characters master
    ’s, which should be like a single quote
    encoded like this but when saving to Database
    using a coldfusion query, Data is saving as some Funny
    Characters (i.e., master
    ?s),
    xml encoding is in UTF-8 and i don't know how to convert that
    zunk characters to normal characters like ( master's) - single
    quote)
    here are the things i tried.
    in Coldfusion Administrator i added a Connection String
    "useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF-8"
    and checked the box which says "
    enable unicode for datasources configured for non-latin
    characters"
    Used a ConvertCharset Function passing xml object .. [/li]
    ii)
    <cfscript>
    function convertCharset(str,charsetFrom,charsetTo)
    var resultStr="";
    var javaString="";
    var byteArray="";
    javaString = CreateObject("java", "java.lang.String");
    javaString.init(str);
    byteArray = javaString.getBytes(charsetFrom);
    resultStr = CreateObject("java", "java.lang.String");
    resultStr.init(byteArray,charsetTo);
    return resultStr.toString();
    </cfscript>
    <cfcontent type="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
    <cfset setEncoding("URL", "UTF-8")>
    <cfset setEncoding("Form", "UTF-8")>
    tried this method also

    Please let me know if i need to do anything.. other than the
    above methods,
    Thanks

    I am using SQL SERVER 2005 Database,
    Field is "Description" Varchar(2000)
    did you perform your test using the same table, code, etc.?
    Yes
    did you read in & dump out the xml file? Yes, I dumped
    the xml file and if i open in NOTEPAD in UTF-8 (filetype) then i
    see a single quote instead of that different character.
    is it really utf-8?
    so i think it's utf-8,
    if your mojibake. chars are from an ms word document, then
    they're not utf-8 but a superset of
    latin-1.
    they are not from MS WORD, i got an XML file which has all
    the course and presentation information..structured properly except
    those characters.. like
    ("younus has a Bachelor’s degree). i see
    that in UTF-8
    so i want to know to which format do i need to convert to when
    saving in Database (SQL SERVER 2005)
    Thanks.

  • Iweb pages hosted on a web server do not look right. Funny characters appea

    any web experts here?
    I have designed a bunch of pages in iWeb. Published them and uploaded them to my web host. However when I view the files via the web, they are not correct. The most obvious is that quote marks, bullets and paragraph markers are shown with funny characters.
    Take a look at www.dancingacademy.co.uk to see an example. Excuse the URL but its the only way I know of showing an example of what's wrong.
    If I view the files locally on my mac (ie publish from iweb to a folder and open them from the local folder) then the files look fine.
    It's only when they get sent from a webserver they look funny.
    Any ideas what my web hosting company is doing wrong?

    The server you are using is (mis)configured to force all browsers to use the wrong encoding. See this note (Server Settings section) for possible fixes:

  • WebLogic returns funny characters in XML

    Hi,
    I have an application developed on Tomcat that includes a servlet that receives and XML post, processes the XML, then constructs an XML response packet (using JDOM) and flushes the response packet back to the calling process. This worked great under Tomcat, however now that I have ported it to WebLogic 6.1sp3, WebLogic appears to be adding some funny characters at the beginning and end of the XML response packet. Here's what it looks like.
    00ae
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE scansresponse SYSTEM "scansresponse.dtd">
    <scansresponse>
    <transferresult>failure</transferresult>
    </scansresponse>
    0000
    Any ideas on what might be causing this and how I can correct this problem? I've tried many different things and am stumped.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Your funny characters are from http "chunking". See the following link for more info: http://ken.coar.org/slides/HTTP/Chunking.html .
    Each chunk is a hex number that indicates how big the chunk is. This can be a good thing! Processing the xml in chunks is faster than looping through it line by line.

  • Funny characters within my text when uploaded

    Hello, I have published my website to a folder and uploaded through Fetch. I used only Arial font in my design. When I view the website in any browser - so far i've tried safari and internet explorer, I have "funny characters" within my text. It seems to mostly occur after, or in place of, a punctuation mark. The characters look like white question marks in a dark diamond.
    I'm fairly new to iWeb. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers!
    Lilly

    hmmm, I just tried changing the preferences in fetch.
    Please read the link you were given again. The very first lines tell what to do depending on what kind of character you are seeing. The Fetch thing is when you see question marks. Is that your case? If not, do the other one.
    do you think it could be the server I'm uploading to?
    If you are seeing something other than question marks, yes, as the link says.

  • Issue with Swedish Characters in mail body

    Hi,
    We are sending mails to some other system from SharePoint. All the swedish characters like ä,Ä,ö become ???.
    When we are sending mails from outlook to that system , we are getting proper mail.
    so the issue is from sharepoint side.
    we are sending mails in UTF8 format nad we have tried all other options as well.
    can some one help us in this case.
    Thanks,
    Heerak

    Hi Heerak,
    According to your description, the email sent from SharePoint replaced Swedish characters with question marks.
    I tried to reproduce this issue, however the Swedish characters in the email body displayed right.
    Did this issue occur in all the emails sent from SharePoint?
    I recommend to create a simple workflow with the send email action to see if the issue still occurs in order to narrow the issue scope.
    Please also re-check if the character set for the corresponding web application is UTF-8.
    Go to Central Administration > Application Management > Manage web applications > Highlight the corresponding web application, click General Settings in the ribbon and choose Outgoing E-mail.
    Best regards.
    Thanks

  • Cyrillic characters in mail

    I receive email in Russian with Cyrillic characters and they are not visualized correctly.
    I have even tried to instal the Russian key board but the situation is unchanged.

    How can I visualize Cyrillic characters correctly in mail?

    It looks like you might have font encoding problem.
    If possible, try using webmail instead of Mail and see if things change.
    Also do View > Message > Raw Source and copy/paste the result in an email to me and I may be able to help (tom at bluesky dot org).

  • Internet links with non-Latin characters in Mail

    If this link is shown in Mail on the iPhone, only the Latin text will be clickable:
    http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/春琴抄
    The Chinese characters will not be considered part of the URL.
    When I click on the link it will not take me to the intended article.
    The same is true for other alphabets, these Japanese characters will not be part of the URL:
    http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/ブロメライン
    Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas? I have submitted a bug report to Apple.
    Jason

    I think it is a bug, but it can make a difference how the link gets sent to you. If you go to a page in Safari and use File > Mail Link to this Page, the link may be usable by the email recipient. If you could try that I would be interested if it works.

  • Strange Characters in Mail and Safari

    Hello,
    Just got my mini home and have noticed strange characters appearing in both Mail and Safari.
    It seems to be a font problem, but changing the fonts in mail and safarui prefs doesn't seem to fix it.
    Specifically: The apple start page rss stories display a weird font, so do the mail headers in mac mail.
    Yes, I did a search of the forum and the only things I seem to be coming up with are font issues related to outlook receiving mail on a pc.
    Any suggestions?
    Stefan

    Without seeing what you mean by "strange characters" it is hard to tell, but the most common cause of gibberish text is the font Helvetica Fractions or Times Phonetic. Dump them if you have them. Also clean your font caches with FontFinagler (use google to find it).
    Send a screen shot if you like (tom at bluesky dot org).

  • Petition: problems with characters in mail sent to Windows computers

    Sign this petition by replying to this thread if you have problems with garbled characters when sending e-mails to Windows computers. Let Apple know It's a huge problem for non-English e-mailing customers and there is no way to definitively fix it.
    I'll start it off:
    Christoffer Du Rietz
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   17" last generation G4

    I'm not interested in knowing the gory technical
    details, I want Apple to fix the problem. The problem
    have existed for years. Non-english speaking Mac
    users run a high risk of sending e-mails that look
    like pure garbage on computers that use Windows. This
    does not help when trying to convince people that
    Macs are superior.
    I want Apple to fix Mail. Because it is
    2006!
    Your views are reasonable, but you need to send them to Apple, not just to the other users trying to provide help with problems in these forums. The channel for this is
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
    You could also consider providing some feedback to MS. The longstanding bugs in Outlook that cause these problems represent really second-rate programming (even if it makes sense for Apple to somehow cater to them in Mail's behavior).

  • Foreign Characters in Mail

    I uses 3 language on a daily basis for mail. English, Korean, & Japanese. Mac is pretty good about encoding Foreign characters. But there seems problem with lot of them. I have good luck with gmail, but Yahoo & hotmail reciepenct are a mess. I tried to follow some kind of formula for encoding ,,, but I just can't seem to find it.
    Any one in similar situation - willing to share a remedy??
    Thanks.

    If you need to accommodate webmail systems like those, you just have to experiment, as there is no predicting what they will mess up. Mail uses UTF-8 as the default encoding, but you may have better luck with ISO-2022-JP for Japanese and EUC-KR (or one of the others available) for Korean (set them with Message > Text Encoding before sending).

    Hi,
    I m working on mails application and the subject part of the header is encoded .

    some time it is utf-8 encoded .
    I want some code where I can decode these into normal characters Whether these part is in the body or subject
    Thanks in Advance...

    Thanks for the screenshot!
    It looks like Latin-1 text is being read as if it were UTF-8 by a defective UTF-8 converter, as used to be found some time ago in Windows Outlook and IE.   For example the sequence "éro", which is Latin-1 bytes E9 72 6F, is defectively converted to E9 B2 AF and then read as UTF-8, which is the chinese character

  • Odd Characters in Mail Application

    I have recently started using the Mail application as I only have one license for Entourage which my wife uses. Everything was going well with Mail until I noticed that emails from people who use outlook arrived with letters the wrong way round in word ...for example kind regards is shown as kimd regords.
    If I click on View then message then plain text alternative; this changes the email so I can read it however when I hit reply the original txt goes back to being in that funny spelling. Then the words that I type all look odd. So for instance my letters m and n are the other way round in a word like son or mum – they come out like som or nun!!
    I have searched the forum to understand what to do here but have failed .....can anyone help please?
    I am using a PB G4 Mac OS 10.4.7 – By the way I had to type this email from entourage ...whilst my wife had logged off!!!
    Thanks
