Further Sawtooth upgrades

Hi,
I need some advice to further my upgrades on my Powermac,I have it for about two years now and got it as an inexpensive way too replace my ever failing PC. Even at the stock 400mhz it was way better than the previous computer.
The current configuration is as follows
1ghz Sonnet encore processor
Nvidia Geforce FX5200 256mb Graphics card
2gig of Ram
Belkin 5 port USB 2.0 card
D-Link Bluetooth adapter
Airport card
I am now looking at other processors, as I have used the Sonnet before I will stay with that manufacturer. My price range stretches to the 1.4ghz and at a push the 1.8 .I need to know if I will see any real enhancment with the 1.4? I have also read a report that the 1.4 isnt much different to the 1.8, something to do with the L2,L3 cach on them ? something I dont fully understand.
Another route to upgrade would be buying a quicksilver or mirror door powermac with a higher spec processor and swapping over the rest of my upgrades to it. Is there much difference in the Architecture of these computers compared to my own?
I have found this computer to be 100% reliable and its currently a well tuned setup running Leopard smoothly, with this in mind a processor upgrade is the prefered option.
And before you say it I can't afford a new mac, also part of my enjoyment comes from the powermacs being expandable and being able to play around with it which I gather you wouldnt get from a imac, mac mini etc.
Any thoughts would be great.

Hi-
A 1ghz 7455 processor with L2 and L3 cache will be roughly equivalent to a 1.3- 1.4ghz 7447 processor with only L2 cache.
A 1.4ghz 7455 processor with L2/L3 cache will be roughly equivalent to a 1.8ghz 7447 processor with L2 only.
A 1.6ghz 7448 with a 1MB L2 cache will be roughly equivalent to a 1.4 ghz 7455 or 1.8 7447 processor.
The above comparisons are application dependant.
Video applications benefit from the L3 cache. Games will typically achieve better frame rates with a processor that has an L3 cache, unless of a much higher processor speed, or if a processor (such as the 7448) has a large L2 cache.
Some applications operate better at speed, independant of cache.
The L2 and L3 caches are memory chips. Memory is a buffer, used to collect and hold data as it waits to be processed. Holding data close to the processor allows for improved performance. The larger the cache, the closer to the processor, the faster the overall performance.
L2 is closer to the processor than the L3. A large L2 can really help performance.
There are architectural differences in the three proceesor chip families that give each successing chip an advantage over the earlier chip.
The 7455 is the oldest of the three. It has the highest power requirements, and has the highest thermal output, and has L2 and L3 cache.
The 7447 has improved architecture, lower power requirements, and reduced heat output. The L2 cache is doubled, but has no L3.
The 7448 is a much improved architecture, has the lowest power requirements, has the lowest heat output, and the 1MB L2 cache greatly increases overall performance.

  • G4 Sawtooth upgraded to 1.2Ghz Shuts down During Post after Leopard Install

Hey everyone I also have a G4 sawtooth and I attempted to 1st upgrade to Leopard and the machine would boot to the Apple logo and shut down. I checked the HD it was fine I was able to slave it to my MacBook. So I partitioned and Clean Installed Leopard took a while to install and then I transferred all my settings and files over. Worked for one boot and same issue Apple Logo and quick shut down. I think I am gonna image and not transfer settings to see what happens. Anyone have this issue?

Update: I removed all third-party PCI cards and peripherals, and was able to boot from the Leopard DVD. Performed an archive/install, and everything worked properly. Reinstalled/reconnected all the hardware I'd removed, and it all works fine.
So, the moral of the story is:
    * Remove all third-party hardware prior to the upgrade
    * Perform an archive/install (or an erase/install)--DO NOT simply upgrade!
    * Reinstall third-party hardware one item at a time to check compatibility
List of third-party stuff I removed & reinstalled, for the curious:
    Sonnet Tango FireWire/USB PCI card
    MacWireless 802.11g PCI card
    Acon USB PCI card
    External FireWire disk
    iSight
    D-Link DWB-120M USB Bluetooth module
    USB-B2K Skype telco adapter
The Sonnet 1GHz CPU upgrade works fine. When I originally purchased it, the 1GHz model was the fastest one that didn't require special firmware, and I figured that was the best way to go. Sure enough, no CPU-related issues with the Leopard upgrade. Now, if I can lay hands on a Radeon 9700 or 9800 Pro graphics card...

  • Sawtooth Upgrade Radeon 8500vs.9000vs.9200

I am considering an upgrade of my Sawtooth 500's, 128 rage pro card to a used
Radeon 8500, 9000 or new Radeon 9200 card.
I want to run a digital flatscreen 20-22 inches.
What are some of the top line pro's and con's of these cards??? ( not for gaming, just graphic use)
    Thanks in advance, Tom

    Hi
The Radeon 9200 Mac Edition is a PCI rather than an AGP card. It seems a shame to have an AGP slot in your Sawtooth and not make use of the extra bandwidth it offers, so I personally wouldn't choose the 9200.
In performance terms I think the 8500 and 9000 are very similar. The 8500 is older but was the high end model (at the time of release), where as the 9000 is newer but was the mid range model (at the time of release).
The 9000 has an ADC port that isn't fully functional in a Sawtooth, as the logic board lacks the extra power connector to power a display through the ADC port, although it can be used as a second DVI port with an ADC to DVI converter cable (around $40).
The 9000 also supports digital resolutions up to 1920 by 1200, where as I believe the 8500 tops out at 1600 by 1200.
I think the 8500 has a cooling fan, which may increase noise marginally, where as the 9000 is passively cooled.
    I hope this helps.

  • [Solved] - Can't Log In After Upgrade

Just upgraded and now can't log in. System hangs at 'Reached target Graphical Interace.'
When I go to tty2 and try to log in, I get 'Log incorrect' error message when trying to log in as normal user or root.
Re-booted to runlevel 3 and tried to su to normal user. Get 'su: module is unknown' error.
Checked slim logs and see 'pam_setcred(): module is unknown' error.
    Have re-installed pam and pambase.
Still can't log in. Appears to be a pam problem, but after many searches, can't find solution. Any ideas?
Update: I re-installed libgssglue package and that solved the problem. Not certain why that wasn't updated during the pacman -Su command, but I can now log into my system and everything is normal.

  • VERIZON WIRELESS PLAN CHANGES, CONTRACTS, UPGRADES - Lack of Customer Service!

I have been 1 of your customers since August of 2006.
I even own a 2nd phone line that I have been using since approximately 2002
Most recently I had inquired with Verizon Customer service about upgrading my cell phone from a BlackBerry to a Droid Maxx (for one of my accounts)
My first inquiry was with a Verizon Rep on the Verizon Online Chat on February 16, 2014.  I told her that I wanted to upgrade my cell phone from a BlackBerry to a Droid Maxx, and I inquired about my Unlimited Data Plan. She said I would “not” lose my Unlimited Data Plan even if I upgraded to a Droid Maxx.  I also asked about a Hot Spot, and she said that would be “included in my Unlimited Data Plan” at no extra charge.
I called Verizon 611 later that same evening and talked live with a Verizon Rep, again asking and confirming the answers to the same questions.  I also asked about “throttling” if I went beyond a certain usage on my data plan, if I upgraded to a new cell phone.  He told me that I would not be limited to certain speeds and bandwidth, no matter how much I used my cell phone since Verizon does not throttle their customers’ data speeds (since Verizon had received so many complaints in the past for throttling,  so they do not do that anymore).  He also said there would “not be an issue with upgrading to a new cell phone and keeping my current data plan.
A few days later, as I looked further into upgrading my device, and trying to make a final decision, I again called Verizon 611 – Customer Service.  But this time the Verizon Rep that I talked to contradicted the other two Verizon Reps info because he told me that I would “lose my unlimited data plan” if I switched to a new cell phone.  He also said if I made any changes to my plan, I would lose my Unlimited Data.  He said there would also be an additional charge for a Hot Spot.  I asked about bringing on a 2nd person to my plan, and keeping Unlimited Data on one of the phones, while having a 2nd data plan package for the other phone for the additional person. He told me the Unlimited Data Plan would only apply to the Original phone on this account and the original phone number.  But if I added a 2nd person/phone to my account they would “not” have Unlimited Data since the new (2nd phone) was not grand-fathered in to this current plan that I had with Verizon.
Finally I decided to go in person to visit a Verizon Store.  When I went into the Verizon Store at Jantzen Beach, North Portland, Oregon, the Rep I talked to said she had been with Verizon for almost 8 years. She said all of the info that the other “3” Verizon Reps had given me was “not” accurate.  At this time, I learned that “ANY/ALL changes to my plans would immediately make me lose my Unlimited Data Plan.  And the ONLY way I could keep this plan, would be to buy my own cell phone (at full Retail cost) and have it added to my account.  And that if I tried to add a Hot Spot, it would cost additional money outside of my data plan.  Also if I tried to add a 2nd person/cell phone to my existing account that I would immediately lose the Unlimited Data Plan.  I was not allowed to change my cell phone#, add any additional user or cell phone, or upgrade my device without losing my Unlimited Data.  She also said maybe I was told something different by the 611 Customer Service Reps because they have authority to make changes or exceptions to plans, and that normal Verizon Store employees do not have authority to make the same changes.
My complaint and question to Verizon is…..WHY do all “4” Verizon Reps have different explanations, advice, rules, etc…when it comes to something as simple as upgrading to a new device and wanting to keep my current plan?  To me, the rules and explanations should not vary day to day, and depending upon who I talk to?
I was originally an AT&T Customer prior to 2006 and I switched to Verizon.  This is my first real experience with HORRIBLE customer service and deception from Verizon!
IF I had made any changes when I initially or immediately after I inquired via the Online Chat, I would have LOST my current data plan!  And then to tell me that I need to go out & buy my OWN phone at FULL Retail price If I want to keep a plan that I’ve had for years now!!!
How much money have I already paid to Verizon in Monthly usage charges since 2006 (for almost 8 years now)??? And you want to reward me for this loyalty and being a Long time customer by cheating me out of my current plan, or trying to deceive me with false promises that I won’t lose the plan?  And then when I finally do want to upgrade, you will take that plan from me? And even after being a customer for 8 years with one account and almost 12 years with my 2nd Verizon account (that I listed at the beginning of this letter), you won’t even offer to give me a free device or a discounted device for renewing my plan?  NOW I need to buy my own phone if I want to continue on with my current data plan?
None of this makes sense, and I have now been told “4” different versions of rules, exceptions and Plan change policies by 4 different Verizon Reps!  They ALL work for the same company --- Verizon Wireless --- so they should ALL have the same answers and rules, right?  I really feel nobody is being honest & upfront with me about this, and I am seriously considering moving back to AT&T Wireless.  As at this point, Verizon wants to do nothing to reward me for being a long-time customer.  I’m beginning to feel that the goal here is to deceive me and cheat me out of my Unlimited Data plan.
What can you do to make this right?  I know you must have record of the Online Chat and also you record 611 Customer Service calls too? How can you explain why all “4” of your Reps have different rules and explanations for Verizon phone plans?
If I do not receive an acceptable response to this letter, you can count on me moving back to AT &T Wireless.  I will also tell all of my Friends & Family that are currently with Verizon about this negative experience.  In the past I have encouraged others to move to Verizon Wireless, but now I no longer feel that is good advice for anyone.
My boyfriend who “almost considered” switching his service to Verizon, is now seriously considering the integrity of Verizon.  He works in Information Technology with large corporations and will also pass this story on to his business associates.
I look forward to your response and explanation.  I feel that after my long term loyalty as a Verizon Customer, I deserve much better treatment and honest answers from Verizon.

    cheralin333 wrote:
I find this all very interesting that the 3 responses I got to this post are ALL defending Verizon jacking around a long time customer.  I would almost venture to guess that Verizon hires people (probably in India & Pakistan) to read their forums and defend whatever they do to their customers.  How do I become the bad person for wanting good customer service? How are they in the right for trying to be deceitful.  None of their Reps had the "same story or info."   NOW I have 3 responses from "supposed PEERS" or other customers in the Verizon Community.  But instead of rallying with me as a customer all 3 are posting comments like they "work for Verizon."   And even Ann's response contained info that I already had in my original post.  And this last post from pherson knocks me for not being loyal?? I have been loyal for over a decade but why would I kiss up to anyone that is trying to make me take it in the shorts???  I'm convinced you are all making minimum wage from Verizon to read their forums and defend their ridiculous practices.  Go find a real job.
No one is "defending" Verizon. We are telling you that
    A) No one from Verizon corporate will see you post
    B) Even if they did they are not going to change policy because 1 customer or a few or 1000 or 10,000 threaten to leave.
So there is no point to your rant. It was waste of time. The people you intended it for aren't going to see or care. Also the FCC, FTC, BBB, etc etc are also a waste of time. The only thing you can do that you have power over is to speak with your wallet and go elsewhere. That would be FAR more productive than what you've done here. I still don't get how people think that because they made a post on a messageboard they can change things. Like people haven't been complaining about this for literally the last 620 days. How's that worked out so far?
Oh and I SHOULD report your post that is full of insults. Next one I WILL. How is that for a threat?

  • HT1338 iMac with OS x 10.5.8 upgrade to run with ipad mini

Currently running OS X 10.5.8 on an iMac6,1 (Processor Name:Intel Core 2 Duo). Need to upgrade software to sync with Ipad Mini, can I go straight to Montain Lion, or what are the required steps? Thanks

You need to buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD and then run Software Update. No further OS upgrades are needed; if it matters, that Mac can't run Mountain Lion.

  • If i cant upgrade to Lion how can i effectively use i cloud?

If i cant upgrade to Lion how can i effectively use i cloud?

OK paper weight is harsh, but i made the upfront investment to have longevity ....
    Reality:
    - We can't predict what Apple will do, we can only go on past behavior.
    - For the past decade Apple has stopped pretty much all support for anything except the current and previous operating system (OS) version.  Apple has brought out a new OS version roughly every 2 years.  This translates to roughly 4 years of update support.  In some cases Apple may stretch it a bit such as iTunes also still working under OS 10.5 (we're now on 10.7), but iTunes isn't an OS.   I do know with the recent malware incident Apple did not bring out a fix for any OS earlier than 10.6.  Now there's an interesting change ahead. Apple brought out Lion last year and is likely to bring out Mountain lion this year. We're now on a 1 year upgrade cycle. If Apple continues past pattern on only supporting the last two OS versions it means your OS basically only has an effective lifespan of 2 years instead of 4. Longevity?
    - Hardware.  We bought an iphone last December. I asked the person in the store about battery life. He said, "Oh, at least two years but you'll be thinking about getting rid of this one by then and getting a newer one."  Two years.
I don't remember the exact criteria, but Lion won't run on the earliest Intel Macs (2006) and Mountain Lion likely won't run on some of the middle aged ones.  Snow Leopard (ca. 2009) won't run on any Mac made prior to 2006. Reviewing OS releases for the past 6 years or so it seems to me you get roughly 5 years before new OS releases won't run on your hardware any more.
So, we have software support dropping out after 4 years or so (maybe now down to 2 years???) and hardware becoming obsolete after 5 years.  Is that longevity?

  • G4 "Sawtooth"

    Hello Evereyone,
I am sure this issue has been addressed many times before, so i am sorry for reasking this question.
First off i have a G4 "Sawtooth" Upgraded with a OWC 1.3 GHZ G4, 120gb HD, and 1.5 GB Ram.
I am asking the infamous video card question because i have read and heard various things on the internet about the subject. From what i have gathered almost any mac AGP or PCI video card will work in the system. And i also found out that most video cards can be flashed to worked with mac's. So the question i have is if i decide to put in for instance a ATI 9800 Pro 256mb AGP Mac Edition Will it work?
    Thanks for the help.
    -Chris

Yes, I had to modify two of the cables to make it work, but it was very easy.
The instructions can be found here:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/ATXG4_AGP_conversion/G4_AGP_to_ATX_casepg2.htm#next
It was just a matter of cutting two wires and splicing them into 2 other wires, and then soldering the connections. I also highly recommend soldering the connections, because I tried just taping them and it didn't work very well. However, after I soldered them, it works flawlessly.
Also, I didn't need any cable extenders like the article says.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can I use G4 Gigabite motthrboard for G4 Sawtooth?

My G4 Sawtooth built-in Firewire ports were burned. I want to replace the motherboard, Can I use a Gigabite motherboard to replace the Sawtooth's?
    Thanks.
    Robert

Just come back to make sure that you meant that to use a QS 2002 motherboard for replacing my G4 Sawtooth motherboard, right?
No, I meant get an entire machine.
The Sawtooth PSU can only power/connect to a Sawtooth logic board.
Though the GE board will fit the Sawtooth case and I/O panel (back wall of case), the GE PSU is also needed.
A Digital Audio uses the same PSU as the GE, but the I/O ports are different, so the Sawtooth case door needs replaced with a DA case door.
The Quicksilver board not only needs a Quicksilver PSU, but also needs a Quicksilver case door, this due to the I/O ports being different.
The case door can be changed by drilling out the rivets on the hinge, and reattaching the new door, but if one buys an entire machine for parts, why not just use that machine?
I understand your attachment to the Sawtooth.
I used mine for 10+ years, but have since moved all compatible parts to a Quicksilver machine.
I documented the Sawtooth upgrades here:

  • Help. Tiger will not boot PowerMac G4

I seem to have shot myself in the foot.
I have Tiger 10.4.11running on a G4 Sawtooth upgraded to 1.8Ghz via Sonnet.
It developed problems: 1. Mouse some times shot out of control and had to be steered back to where I was, 2. Could not wake computer up from sleep and had to re-start manually.
Decided to fix problems and read several options. I implemented the deletion of certain prefs:
    -- trash /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    -- trash /Users/[username]/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    -- reboot while resetting PRAM/NVRAM
I followed these directions; deleted the two prefs files and zapped PRAM when the computer rebooted.
However the computer would not load its OS. I tried zapping PRAM again on another re-start but to no effect.
Computer starts up, identifies HDD, Apple logo appears but the rotation symbol does not appear indicating that the computer cannot load its OS.
I have tried starting up from a Tiger Install disc but it will not work. I get a grey screen with a black rectangle in the centre reminiscent of the grey kernal panic message block but no message.
I have a duplicate (back-up) of the Tiger OS on a bootable external drive. When I start holding down Option key to display HDD’s the computer identifies both the internal and external drives with the internal highlighted. Problem is I cannot select the external drive because the computer/keyboard will not respond to the right Arrow key!
Can anyone offer a suggestion as to the cause of the problem or to its resolution. Best I can think of is to take out the HDD from the external Drive and use it to replace the HDD in the computer. That is a bit messy and I would prefer a better alternative.
I welcome any suggestions to remedy problem.

    Hi Tony,
Glad I could help and that your efforts were not totally in vain...
We still don't know how trashing those plist files bricked your mac.
Maybe you trashed them all at once while actually you should have trashed them one at a time, rebooting inbetween, to give OSX the chance to rebuild them to default settings? They seem very essential plist files, maybe OSX can't rebuild them if the combination of these two is missing? Again, I'm no expert, just guessing.
    Anyhow: for the future:
it's always best not to trash plist files. Move them to your desktop, or another location temporarily.
Test by rebooting, recreating a default plist. If you run into troubles, you can always move back the original plist file. If all goes well, you can then trash the old plist.
But I guess you figured that out by now ;-) sometimes we got to learn the hard way hehe...
Luckily you had a cloned back-up that saved your bacon :-)
    regarding Leopard:
Minimum specs are 867 MHz G4 and 512MB Ram, but a mac with this specs will run Leopard significantly slower than Tiger, thus a no go. If you're well above these specs (at least 1GB RAM), the performance drop will be less significant (around 4% slower with 1GB if I remember the benchmarks well)
If you can max out the RAM to 2GB, it should run well.
another thing: I've read that Leopard Install discs are hard to get these days - at a reasonable price. A leopard disc costs much more than a Snow Leopard disc. Reason:
Leopard discs are discontinued by Apple, and only available on sites like ebay... Many people still own PPC machines where Leopard is the limit, so they are much sought after.
Also keep in mind, as I said before, that there are system specific DVD's and universal ones, the latter being more expensive.
I hope the CCC errors don't give you too much further troubles, and that your wake-up issue turns out to be fixed too, if not, best start another thread.
Side note: Should troubles continue: If you have the budget: the Mac Mini is quite affordable. I have one, (late 2012 model) and I'm very pleased with the bang for the buck. (only disadvantage: GPU not very powerful, but not an issue for me, as I don't do much graphic work)
Cheerz, see you around some day!

  • CS5.5 on Macbook Pro (Win or Mac)

I'm a PC user due for major upgrade. Thinking about maybe switching to Mac. Macbook Pro or iMac.
If I switch to Mac I could run Mac version of PPro OR Windows version on Windows with Parallels Desktop.
    Any comments/suggestions?
    Thanks.

I was pondering this same issue.
Harm's reply is somewhat what I perceive Macs as well....with the exception that I've never thought of any computer as "sexy"... but hey, to each their own.
    Pro's -
    - You can have Mac and Windows OS's running on one machine. Bootcamp is far better than any other "virtual / emulation" software running Windows.
    - Thunderbolt; the speed is impressive...at least on paper. (Eventually, it will make it's way to the Windows world)
    Con's -
    - No HARDWARE acceleration for MPE in PPro
    - iMac HDD has to be replaced with a specific HDD from Apple. You may want to read this: http://blog.macsales.com/10146-apple-further-restricts-upgrade-options-on-new-imacs
    - Thunderbolt; it's a first gen technology so use beware!! Connecting external monitors can be a nightmare. Another tidbit of info: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2774718
