Future of Flash Builder

I just read that Adobe will discontinue Flash Catalyst and the Design View in Flash builder ?
Is that TRUE ? Programatically Layout and Design uh?
http://forums.adobe.com/message/4085187#4085187
If so that would be a BIG step backwards

I am a designer/developer - I do use the design view extensively. And yes I am more than worth my salt and more. For me, being able to have immediate visual feedback is absolutely necessary. I don't like coding "blind". I have had the opportunity to work Microsoft Blend - Visual Studio since 2007 - It really is what I hoped flex would be. The best of both worlds. As front-end interface developer designer I could work on the exact same source-code, submitting to SVN on a regular basis together with the software engineers developing the backend and SDK. Blend allowed me controle over the primitive shapes that makes up a component. This allowed extreme customisation and optimisation. The wysiwyg view is an absolute crucial part of the process (e.g. do I want this rectangle to have 5px margins or 4, do the shadow work better with a 10 px falloff or a 8px falloff, do I want pixel snap on or off [whish flash had that] - which does look and work different than the photoshop one so I DO HAVE TO DESIGN in the wysiwyg as well)
Yes sure, I do go through a phase designing in Illustrator and Photoshop, but putting the components together takes time. I do not simply import flat artwork and then wrap them in some appropriate container. I build components up using multiple primitive shapes which gets re-purposed and targeted for various states, subtle animations, color-changes and has to comply to it's parent-component's rescaling capabilities. During that phase I do NOT want to continuously recompile. (although I would sometimes create a separate project just to test a specific component that can only be fully viewed after recompiled).
The excuse of "all good coders don't use the design view anyway" is a cop out. I can understand if Adobe says
1) we did not have the resources to do it decently (like Microsoft Blend)
2) we simply do not put the resources in to hire clever enough developers to create a decent tool
But a statement like it's preferable to work only blindly in code is simply wrong and naive of the state of art of dev. tools. Maybe for a dos-like interface or win-32 forms style interface only using stock-standard layout and components.
The biggest advantage of Microsoft Blend is being able to have split view open - I do this with Flashbuilder as well although it is slower and more buggy than Blend - I would write the markup and see updates realtime, switch over to Visual Studio that has the project open in the background for some serious code-completion capabilities - then miss my wysiwyg view - and switch rigth back to Blend.
Why am I using flash-builder/flex - if it was not for the fact that Microsofts wpf-framework only works fully on Win-OS or a subset of it as a silverlight plugin on fewer platforms than flash - I would have used Microsoft. The reason using flash is because it can be deployed on so many platforms - consistently (not like the html4 and now 5 chaos) - It has powerful interactive and multimedia capabilities.
My HTML works exactly the same way - for certain core complex components I will code and have a wysiwyg open as well for better navigation, more inuitive decision making and less time spend going backwards and forwards between compiling/running in the browser - but with the sad state of wysiwyg of dreamweaver unluckily I have to swithc more often (not because I am a more "CLEVER" developer)
Summary - I will use flash/flex only if there is no alternative because of this decision - Flash was supposed to be a creative environment to create highly interactive and creative applications/content for multiple platforms.
Thanks Adobe , I have used Macromedia director since 1993 - You managed to kill that off and now you are messing with flash - It could have been so much more. You simply lack the vision and we are stuck with the limitations, inconsistency, long-development time of HTML5 and a messy array of tools to try and make it usefull.
Whish Microsoft had the vision to make wpf work on all platforms....

  • Is Flash Builder 4.7 being maintained anymore?

I posted this question in the Adobe Air Development forum. (Is Flash Builder 4.7 being maintained anymore?)
One user responded that he heard Chris Campbell of Adobe report that he believed that they will fix major bugs but we should not expect actual progress on the tool itself because Adobe feels that the community creates better tools on their own.
Does anyone on this forum have further intelligence on the future of Flash Builder? I am trying to decide if it is time to jump ship to another IDE.
    Thanks kindly!

The ANE file seemed to load in my project ok, and build ok.  But when I hit run to package for my ios device, I get the above error.

Here's the fix in case anyone else runs into this problem.  When Flash Builder is building the deployment during launch, it converts the mapped path to a mangled local path for the ane to find the descriptor to a relative path, which can't be found and throws the null pointer.  Making the Output Folder path actually local to the computer, as opposed to the default that FB creates, resolves the error, and still allows blazeds access from the device.

  • Is Flash Builder dead? I just found out that adobe has dropped Flash on mobile devices

I did alot of research on software to develop apps for the mobile market. I liked Flash Builder since it will create apps for all 3 types of mobile devices at once. Downloaded the 30 day trial and have started on the 5 day training course.
Today I saw an article from sitepoint that abobe has dropped development and support for Flash on mobile devices.
The end result of Flash Builder gives you a .swf file in an html wrapper thus we are developing flash when adobe has dropped Flash for mobile. Am I wasting my time? Should I go to another software package?

the plugin for mobile browsers is the only thing they will not update in the future. The normal desktop browser plugin is very alive
Everything else is active... they are still continuing to work on exporting to Android,iOS, and rim playbook via AIRapps in both flash builder and flash pro.
The only difference going forward is mobile websites viewing flash (apps are unchanged). Basically... apple won
Not a big deal so far, but everywhere you look people are frantic and asking -whats next?
I like air for ios and android. Im sticking with it

  • The Future of Flash

In light of the recent announcement of continued support and upgrades for Flash, I've been thinking more about the future of Flash in the new HTML 5 oriented climate, with more browsers shunning the use of Flash, particularly on the mobile platforms.
Now, I do think that HTML 5 is a good step forward, and it certainly should replace Flash for video content, especially considering that Flash only really dominated that space because of the lack of better support through HTML in the first place. However, on the other hand I also see Flash as a potential champion of these new technologies, as it has very mature support, and (if we ignore uncertain plugin support), it's still a great platform for games, animations, and cross-platform apps.
The way I see it though is that Flash has essentially two core technologies. The first is ActionScript, which I don't believe would be hard at all (certainly not for Adobe) to repurpose as a language for writing Javascript. In fact, I'm under the impression that ActionScript has essentially been an extension of Javascript anyway, so a lot of these capabilities may already be in place, which means a lot of the ActionScript APIs need not be hard to port at all.
Second is the vector graphics capabilities. Now, I expect these would be a bit more difficult to port into an HTML 5 setting, but with ever improving Javascript performance it seems possible that a set of Flash vector libraries could be created that can run directly in the browser, without requiring a plugin. Combined with the current editor for making it easy to build vector content, I think that such a capability would become very popular.
To me this would seem an ideal future for Flash, as it would position the Flash editor as a great way to develop games and animations for the HTML 5 web, and allow Flash Builder to continue to be used for ever more complex apps drawing on the capabilities of Flash and Flex. After all, Adobe's money comes from the Flash and Flash Builder, rather than the plugins and players. As a result it seems like eliminating these in favour of a set of HTML 5 Flash libraries would be a really great way to allow the wealth of existing content to go forward, and to keep new developers interested, as it would eliminate the uncertainty at the future of Flash.
Forgive me if this has already been discussed at length; I did try a search but couldn't find anything that seemed similar. But while I'm not a Flash fanatic, I think there is a clear, and strong position for Flash in the HTML 5 web, without the need to try and compete.

  • Autocompletion not working in Flash Builder burrito

    Hello!
What causes could prevent autocompletion from working in Flash Builder burrito? in flash builder 4 it works fine, but not at all in burrito. maybe I changed some settings somehow? If i open Settings->Flash Builder->Editors then "Enable Auto Activation" under "Code Assist" is checked.
what other reason could there be for that problem?

    Hi,
Are you using 'Flash Builder Burrito Preview'? You might have faced this known issue https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FB-28451 . This is fixed in future builds of Flash Builder.
Workaround is, Click 'Restore defaults' in Preferences->Flash Builder->Editors->ActionScript Code->Content Assist Cycling
    Or Changing workspace.
Let us know if this workaround solves the issue.

  • Incompatible version of the Flex SDK 4.6 in Flash Builder 4.5

First: I just upgraded the whole CS to 5.5 last week, including Flash builder 4.5.3 Premium.
To make that possible I had to use the Adobe cleaner, which resulted in manually resetting prefs in several apps.
I imported Flex Projects which use the SDK 4.6, so I got the latest (4.6.0.23201B) from the adobe site today.
In the trial version of Flash Ubilder 4.6, there's no problem, but in the FB4.5 Premium you can't use Design View.
Trying to uninstall FB4.5 and then installing 4.6 trial doesn't work because even then, the installer says it has found an older version.
    So that's not an option!
I just can' tbelieve that the official release CS5.5 just doesn't support the 4.6 SDK.
It seems I'm not the only one with the problem, according to other posts, so Adobe:
Please, solve this right away, because as a prof.user, this costs me and I do not appreciate that!

Anything regarding Flex is pretty much at Apache these days.  There is no plan to distribute a Maven compatible Flex 4.6.  I hope Apache will make future Apache Flex builds work with Maven.

  • How to use Flash Builder and iphone 3g?

    Hi,
i've downloaded FB 4.5... and i'm trying to develop something on my iphone 3g, but i've discovered (with big disappointment) that it's not supported...
Is there any version (even a previous one) of FB that i could use in order to work with iphone 3g?
or... will there be a patch in the future to use that phone?
    Many thanks
    bye
    Alex

Yes. I have Flash Builder 4.6 and 4.7 running in different Eclipse Luna installs.
    More details at http://forums.adobe.com/message/4527443
On Mac, I had to have the 32bit version of Luna for 4.6, and the 64bit version of Luna for 4.7 (and  I recently started using  4.7 with Eclipse Mars).
For 4.6 you need to first download Eclipse 3.6 and install the Flash Builder 4.6 plugin to that Eclipse install. For 4.7 you need to download Eclipse 3.7 and install the plugin to that Eclipse install. Once it's installed in the 3.x version, you can then copy the fb*.link files from the Eclipse 3.x dropins folders into your Eclipse Luna's dropin folder.
There is an issue where something in Flash Builder 4.7 won't work right when using it as a plugin, not sure but it might be something with building ANEs.

  • Flash Builder is an Unprofessional Beta

In Spring of 2011, I was very excited at the fact that we would be using Adobe Flash Builder 4 in a semester-long software engineering class project at a leading university.  I had used many Adobe products in the past and was very happy with them, particularly Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver.  I had also been wanting to learn ActionScript/Flex, and this project would give me the opportunity.  However, after extensive use of Flash Builder, I have realized that this product was the biggest let down since Windows Vista.
There were several people working on the same project using Subversion.  In addition, we would have a lab session once a week using different computers, so it was necessary to frequently import projects into Flash Builder.  Importing Flex Projects was the most annoying and time consuming aspect of many.  Firstly, when one selects the import option, a dialog is presented and is positioned mostly off screen.  It is necessary for one to drag the dialog to the screen manually every time.  In addition, the path of recent projects is not saved, so one must manually navigate to the proper directory each time.  Since there were so many problems with projects falling apart, many imports were necessary.  It is necessary to manually navigate through the long hierarchy of directories to reach the project.  This is very time consuming and unproductive.
After the import, the project will not run because of some problem finding the HTML files.  It was necessary to create new projects from scratch and do a lot of copying/pasting until a team member directed me to delete the html-template directory.  I am not sure how he came across this tip, as I had searched the Internet for solutions to no avail.  One more tedious step is necessary.  The html-template directory needs to be recreated, and the only way, at least that I see, is to rebuild the project, then after the error appears in the Problems window, right-click the error and select Recreate HTML Templates.  That’s quite a bit of work, and maybe there should be an explicit option to recreate HTML templates that’s not buried as a right-click option in the errors list.
This leads to the next problem.  Errors do not appear in the code until the file is saved.  Every time I type in a new statement, it is necessary to save the file in order to see if there are any errors.  This is very counterproductive.  In addition, it would be much more productive to add a feature in the code hints that would allow for mouse wheel scrolling.  It takes much longer to navigate through the hints without this feature.
Another problem related to importing projects is with executing it.  Sometimes after importing a new project, a dialog displays that says that it may be necessary to restart the browser.  This turned out to be a huge problem, as I frequently have many, many Firefox tabs/windows open at a given time.  It is very unproductive to restart Firefox several times until the project finally imports correctly.  Sometimes it will work without restarting, however, and I cannot pinpoint any differences between when it works and when it doesn’t.  This may be related to the Flash plugin as opposed to Flash Builder.
This leads to another problem.  For testing purposes, sometimes it is necessary to locally run the HTML file in the bin-debug directory.  Even after a successful import and rebuilding of the HTML template, the Flash content will not load at all – just a blank screen.  Sometimes the content will load, but it will not function correctly.  If I upload the files to a live web server, it works just fine.  However, sometimes it is necessary to run the HTML files locally, and it is very inefficient to have to upload/run to/from a web server.
After all the trial and error of simply importing a project and when you think you’re making progress, something happens to the project along the way.  All of a sudden when you try to execute an MXML application, which is in the same directory of several others, only one certain MXML application decides to run (when you are trying to run another one).  The only workaround that I found is to either bring up a backup or create a new project and copy/paste the code.  This is highly unproductive.
All the inefficiencies and bugs in Flash Builder made it necessary for me to make constant backups.  When a project fell apart, I had to open a backup and copy/paste the code.  This was a lot of wasted time.  In addition, I learned early on not to count on Flash Builder when presenting or making minor, last minute changes before a presentation.  Flash Builder always managed to encounter some strange problem.
Flash Builder is unreliable and highly inefficient.  I love Adobe products and Flash is great, but at this time I can no longer use or support Flash Builder, and I could in no way justify its purchase in the future until most of these bugs and inefficiencies are fixed.  It has potential, and could be a great product if this were the case, but in my experience I spent more time overcoming bugs than coding.  When something would not work right, I first had to determine whether it was a bug in my code or a bug in Flash Builder.  If Adobe needs an engineer to fix some of these seemingly simple issues, I would be willing to take on the task for the sake of saving this potentially amazing product.
    [email protected]

it's a beta. it stunk. but they put it out for review which helps Adobe and others. But never treat those products as stuff to base your serious work around. Flex3 is stable. FB4 is 90% reliable. Things are still broken in it.
btw if it was a leading university why in the world would they base it around a Beta that was buggy or was that your decision ?
now, since I helped, please give me my 5 or 10 points.

  • Invalid Launch Image in Flash Builder 4.6

I've been making updates and releases to my iPad app for the last several months, but just recently, I started receiving this email back from Apple:
iPhone 5 Optimization Requirement - Your binary is not optimized for iPhone 5. As of May 1, all new iPhone apps and app updates submitted must support the 4-inch display on iPhone 5. All           apps must include a launch image of the appropriate size. Learn more about iPhone 5 support by reviewing the iOS Human Interface Guidelines.
I've been googling this for a while, and have tried adding  Default.png (320x480), Default-586h.png (640x960), and [email protected] (640x960) files to the root directory and made sure they were being compiled into the .ipa file.  With the [email protected] file, I received an additional error in the nastygram from Apple:
Invalid Launch Image - Your app contains a launch image with a size modifier that is only supported for apps built with the iOS 6.0 SDK or later.
So I took out the @2x file and it still failed.  Now, my app isn't even intended for the iPhone5, it's intended for the iPad.  What can I do to make them happy so I can keep making releases?

These are the errors tackled with this post:
iPhone 5 Optimization Requirement - Your binary is not optimized for iPhone 5. As of May 1, all new iPhone apps and app updates submitted must support the 4-inch display on iPhone 5. All apps must include a launch image with the -568h size modifier immediately following the <basename> portion of the launch image's filename. Launch images must be PNG files and located at the top-level of your bundle, or provided within each .lproj folder if you localize your launch images. Learn more about iPhone 5 support and app launch images by reviewing the iOS Human Interface Guidelines and iOS App Programming Guide.
Invalid Launch Image - Your app contains a launch image with a size modifier that is only supported for apps built with the iOS 6.0 SDK or later.
Non-PIE Binary - The executable 'C-Print Mobile.app' is not a Position Independent Executable. Please ensure that your build settings are configured to create PIE executables. For more information, refer to Technical Q&A QA1788 - Building a Position Independent Executable
I followed these steps to get my app .ipa to the point where Apple would accept it:
Download the latest AIR SDK. My Flash Builder was using the AIR SDK 3.6. From within Flash Builder I clicked "Check for updates..." and Flash Builder said it was up-to-date. BUT when checked the AIR SDK website, there in fact was a newer version. So you may need to update, even if Flash Builder says otherwise. To check, go to Windows -> Preferences -> Installed AIR SDKs. If you have AIR SDK 3.6 or less, you need to update.
The latest SDK can be downloaded here:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/air-sdk-download.html
IMPORTANT: If you are building a Flex project (that was my situation), you will need to download the SDK without the compiler. This will be under the "Note: Flex users will need to download the original AIR SDK without the new compiler." section.
Install the downloaded SDK. The instructions are different for Flex projects and ActionScript projects.
    Flex: http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/how-overlay-air-sdk-flex-sdk.html
    ActionScript: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-builder/kb/overlay-air-sdk-flash-builder.html
Reference the correct version in your app.xml file. My app was using AIR SDK 3.1, which is very old. As of this writing, I'm now using:<application xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/air/application/3.7">
Include a splash screen image called [email protected] in the top-most level of your source. This file must be 640x1136 (width x height), and is required for iPhone 5 devices.
Read the following forum thread about the Non-PIE Binary issue. As of this writing, it is being regarded as "not a big deal", but Apple may become more strict about this in the future.http://forums.adobe.com/message/5281575
Best of luck. If these steps work for you, let me, and others, know here in the forums!

  • Goodbye Adobe Flash Builder

I think I am done with Flex / Flash Builder. I havent heard a thing from Adobe about any plans for the platform tooling and there is a continual lag in the AIR and Flex for mobile support. I mean, just recently upgrading to xcode 5.1 broke the ability to use the iPhone Simulator which took a while to get fixed. You can make the argument its a beta cycle but should that test be part of Adobe's basic tests for functionality?
I have started my trial of Xamarin and have been working on POCs of some of the mobile components that I would need to continue working like I did in Flex.
If you add things like MvvmCross to the Xamarin equation you get data binding much like you do with AS3 / MXML.
The other added bonus is that xamarin can use its own tooling or visual studio and since they are a microsoft partner they are included in beta cycles so there is less of a lag with platform features / tooling, etc.
Sure, you have to learn a bit more about developing separate UI layers for each platform but you also get the bonus of better code reuse and windows phone / windows store and mac desktop, which are things you cant do with Flex and at this rate are things that may never come.
I may still use Flex for web stuff if it calls for it but I'm betting I can do most of it in html 5.
I find it very sad that I am giving up a platform that I have been involved with for almost two decades starting with future splash animator, but I can no longer begin mobile projects that have such a huge X factor for support and compatibility down the road. At least with the xamarin price tag comes peace of mind, you get what you pay for.
Goodbye Adobe AIR / Flex / Flash

You should really check out flash develop its free an open source (although doesn't work on mac ), it has excellent built in tools for mobile, you can also make cross platform gpu accelerated work very easy with starling.

Good idea, i want work on Flash Builder 5
PS: Suggestion for mossed components since 2004 by Macromedia Inc.
Very old components from Flash MX 2004 / Flash 8 we missed there.

PS: I really missed Menu Component because MouseEvent.RightCLick / MouseEvent.CONTEXT_MENU are available since Flash Player 9. I am getting crazy because Menu Component from Flash Pro 9, 10, 11 and 12 haven't yet. Now Flex SDK has MouseEvent.CONTEXT_MENU here and i have tested Menu from Flex Component ( Flex SDK 3.6.0a ) = It works fine like i have created example desktop into Flash Player 11
Build by Flex SDK 4.9.11 with MX Version.
But i want go back Flash Pro CS5.5 / Flash Pro CS6. - Did you develop any minimal components for Pure AS3?
And i have tested with Aspiere Component uiMenu and it works fine, too with Away 3D under Flash Builder 4.5
PS: Aspire Components has faked skins like Windows 2k, XP and Vista Skins
There images are Flash Player 12, Aspire Component UI by Ghostwire with Away3D 4.1.6
But Aspire Component sees like Flex Components But they won't work with Away 3D - View3D inside uiWindow was hidden.
For future with Flash Player 13/14 looks like accessed hidden contextmenu like Qooxdoo Frameworks. I want to hide with Flash Player's Contextmenu.
Application's Container should to set to false without contextmenu. = No contextmenu? If they like this.... Thanks for support

  • Wireframe Components list smaller than Flash Builder Components list?

    Hi All,
I noticed that in Flash Catalyst the WIREFRAME COMPONENTS tab only has a limited set of components (Button, Checkbox, Data List, HScrollbar, HSlider, Radio Button, Text Input, Toggle Button, VScrollbar, VSlider). Flash Builder, on the other hand, has other components not in this list (Combo Box, Color Picker, Progress Bar, Tab Bar, etc).
For all the components in FB not in the wireframe list of FC, is the designer/developer supposed to add custom components in the Library tab of FC? Will Adobe add more to the list of wireframe components in future FC releases?
    Thanks for any inputs!

    Hey FutureSplasher,
You're right, the Flash Catalyst Wireframe Components list is a subset of the Spark component set exposed in Flash Builder.
In Catalyst we expose special tooling, properties, and experience around each spark component.
It is definitely our intent moving forward to continue to expose more and more Spark components, but as opposed to Builder each component we add requires some special work around exposing the user experience of working with, creating and manipulating that component.
I absolutely encourage you to leverage the fxpl (library) workflows to create and import your own components (and share with other Catalyst friends online if you feel so inclined ).
In the meantime, if you have specific high priority component requests, we'd love all the feedback we can get.  Feel free to post a list of a couple high priority components here, or post them to the ideas site so we can get other users voting for them: http://ideas.adobe.com/flashcatalyst
    Thanks for posting!

  • New to flash builder 4

I have recenlty downloaded the flash builder 4, and I would like to develop an application in facebook. I have created an app on facebook, I mean only the apps name. I would like to develop a chess application using flash builder 4, but I don't know where to start. Should I use a native app or HTML 5/ mobile app? Which is better? I really want to learn with proper guidance. And i don't know what is SDK facebook, and what is its role on developing a fb app.
    Thank you,

A good introduction to Flash Builder is Flex in a week: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/videotraining.html .
You might also consider looking at http://www.learningactionscript3.com/ .
I think that learning Flex is a very big ask for someone who has done no programming at all before. My gut feeling is that you should learn some programming basics before attempting to learn Flex. You won't be building any significant Flex applications in the very immediate future you have to learn programming basics first.
    Good luck!

  • Flash builder 4 no run or debug

    Greetings.
Thank you for completing a very interesting technology.  I am currently evaluating Flex platform to see if it is something I can rely on in the future when considering a RIA platform.
I started with Flash Builder beta 2 about a week before final release came out.  All worked well as I was going through "flex in a week" series.
However, when moving from a trial to the final release I do not have "Run" and "Debug" buttons any more. I uninstalled beta first.
Both times I downloaded a plug-in version for windows.  I tried installing twice; first into an existing eclipse environment (Zend Studio) and after it didn't work uninstalled and tried with bundled version of Eclipse.  I have not tried downloading a standalone version yet.  The only way to see the result is through "Export release build" which is OK for final preview but is impossible to debug.
I checked perspecitive customizer to see if the buttons were simply unchecked from the toolbar but they are nowhere to be found in the list.
I also noticed that my workspace changes are never saved and I always have to open all the views over again each time I start the application. Do not know if this is related.
How can I get back the debug and run buttons?
    Thank you for any suggestions.

Try "Reset Perspective" in your Window menu.
