FXG Observations/Suggestions

First of all, let me say how awesome it is to see the FXG
capabilities added to Flex. It opens up a new class of applications
and new model for creating UI elements based on vector graphics,
which is common in "my world" of industrial applications.
A few thoughts/comments:
It would be helpful to clarify which objects will be capable
of hit-testing, focus, and generation of mouse and keyboard events.
Interactivity is essential to the utility of FXG. Also, requiring
shapes and paths to be wrapped in a Group in order to achieve
interactivity could be problematic, as it would create a potential
disconnect between the designer/coder/animator workflow.
It would be helpful to clarify methods and support for
dynamic addition/removal of objects and the rendering rules
associated this this type of behavior. It may also be desirable to
provide methods to suppress/enable re-rendering if a large number
of runtime/dynamic changes to the graphic structure need to be
made, so that rendering can be
optimized.
On a related note, an FXG container element/object that
allowed its contents to be serialized/deserialized at runtime would
be extremely valuable for a range of applications where vector
graphics can dynamically be loaded/combined at runtime, not just
compile time.
In terms of efficiency of design and compactness of
description of a vector drawing, elemental shapes, lines, and such
need to support styling of some type so that reusable styles can be
declared and references. Additionally, it would be ideal if these
"styles" were themselves addressible and modifiable at runtime.
This was a very useful aspect of SVG that enabled animation to be
implemented much more easily in certain use cases.
A declarative Arc element type (or perhaps extensions to the
Ellipse element type) would GREATLY simplify creation of many
common types of UI components (pie wedges, circular gauge ranges,
and so on).
A very, VERY powerful attribute of text elements within SVG
was the concept of the text-anchor (and autosizing), which allowed
the text object to properly align itself automatically in cases
where the anchor point was not the upper left corner. To implement
truly centered or right aligned placement requires a-priori
knowledge of the text dimensions or script-driven sizing logic that
greatly complicates things. It would be a big improvement if FXG
could make it possible to achieve this declaratively, as with SVG.
Hope this is helpful, and I welcome comments and ideas.

  • ICloud & Reminders - Two quick observations / suggestions

    1) When you add the task through the iCloud web interface you cannot set a specific / exact time to be reminded. The alert option only has date of event and a couple of "x hours before" settings but since it only asks you for the date (and not the exact time) then they'll all be working around midnight of that day. I believe that setting a reminder through iCloud.com should work exactly the same way as it does in iOS.
Which brings me onto point number two...
    2) You can't set location reminders through iCloud.com. I'd like to be able to choose a point on Google Maps and set reminders within a certain radius. In fact I'd like that on the iPhone too instead of being forced to use addresses saved in my contacts.

  • Any suggestions for editing Music Videos with Multiclip?

Hi there. I have been reading about the new multiclip feature in FCPHD5. Sounds as if it would be perfect for editing a performance music video with multiple run throughs. In fact it almost seems too good to be true. I was writing to ask if anyone has tried this and what problems they encoutnrered or what workflow they could recommend. I haven't used multiclip before (or editied many music videos either) and would appreciate any suggestions.
This is my idea so far.
capture offlineRT the whole tape, make subclips with an angle setting of each take. Then edit the multiclip in a timeline which includes the song as an audio track. I thought I would synch with inpoints manually set to the beginning of the songs first riff in playback (as there was no clapper on set that day, curse them)
I have questions about onlining as well and how to make it a less tormenting nerve racking experience. Maybe its just me but the thought of trashing all the media, duplicating projects and recapturing makes me break out in a cold sweat. But I'll deal with that later.
Thanks for your thoughts, observations, suggestions.
    Have a merry Christmas
    Sincerely
    Peter Stenhouse

The plan was to sync up the mixed PT audio to the video track. However the club screwed up the recording and I was left with using the audio from one of the tripod mounted cameras that I placed a stereo mike on.< </div>
    General advice for live performances:
    1. Depending on a computer to make the only recording is a silly idea. Use tape or a minidisk. Take a line feed off the main board and record it on at least one of the cameras.
    2. There is nothing that will substitute for missing timecode better than a good countdown. Insist the band develop a creative visual and aural timing cue that all cameras and mics can see.
    3. The most important part of shooting a performance or a lipsync gig for mulitcamera assembly is preproduction. The bugs, glitches and gotchas are all well known and thoroughly documented on thousands of band blogs.
    4. There is no excuse to go into a location shoot unprepared and carrying a solid backup plan for all of the stuff that will go wrong.
    5. A full, all-camera, all-personnel rehearsal is a good idea.
    6. The band's lighting guy knows nothing about video. Give him some help or give him the day off.

    Observation / suggestion :
    1. When I have windows either snapped left/right or in all four corners, and then I pull them back out of the snap, it would be great to have Windows remember my previous sized window before the snap operation.
    2. Is there a Key combo to make 4 or less open windows snap to the corners or at least let you pick the 4 windows/apps you want to snap to the 4 corners?

  • Duplex printing problem with hp 9500 (right side always just half printed)

Since OS X 10.6 was released there is a problem with the print out of duplex printed pages (specially via Indesign CS4 broschure printing function). Using Mac OS X 10.5.8 with old and new driver everything is fine - but under 10.6, 10.6.1 or 10.6.2 neither old nor one of the new driver releases 2.1, 2.2 or 2.3 will work.
When I´m trying to print a duplex printing page the print of the right page will be cutted off at the half of the page - like the page would not print A3 horizontally but vertically (so the rest is cut off). The new print features within the printing menu (manual duplex print and print broschure will have same effect but with a strange miniaturization to A5 - although it should be A4). All in all the is no way to print out a duplex printing with OS X 10.6 and hp 9500. Will there be any solution in sight? Are there other with the same effect?

I have an identical issue to neuegestaltung, but with an HP 5500. I can print single-sided to A3/tabloid successfully but when I try printing duplex the right quarter of the page is cut off on both sides - almost as if it thinks it's printing portrait.
Applications affected include Adobe Acrobat 8 and 9, Adobe CS3 and CS4 applications including InDesign.
Preview works fine, but of course the colour balance makes the output unusable.
OS 10.6.2, print driver HP Color LaserJet 5500 v 3010.107.
Using the Gutenprint driver I can't either do A3 or colour so there is no solution there.
Worked fully and correctly with the same apps under 10.5.x.
At the moment I am running Windows XP under VMWare to print from Acrobat, which is plainly silly.
Any useful* observations, suggestions or workarounds welcome.
*Needless to say, "It's Adobe's problem" or similar are not acceptable responses. It may well be an interaction between the Adobe's applications and Apple's printing system and/or driver of course; in that case the companies need to collaborate to solve the issue.

  • Calendar app in 10.3 dev preview

Surprised to see what seem like an obvious UX issue with the calendar app in the 10.3 dev preview:
The month view is moved forward/backward in time by swiping down and up, where the day and week view are moved forward/backward in time by swiping left/right.  While I suppose I could get used to it, I don't see why it was necessary or desirable to break the user's sense of past/future navigation depending on what chunk of time they are striding forward/backward.  Why not just keep the way that it works in 10.2?

Oh, and also a minor observation/suggestion:
In month view, the agenda panel below the calendar can be expanded by tapping a tiny little icon button.  Swipe gestures are genius on small screen mobile devices because they require less precision vs. tapping on some very specific spot.  Why not expand or contract the agenga view panel with a swipe up/swipe down?  The tiny little tap target can stay, as a visual cue for folks who prefer to tap a button, but high-utility swiping is all over the rest of the calendar app, and agenda view expansion is just one more logical place to put it.

  • Duplex printing problem with Reader Upgrade

I upgraded Acrobat Reader 10.1.8 to 11.0.4 and can no longer access fast or duplex printing for PDF's. I have a Canon MP970 printer for 3 years and have always been able to do both fast printing and duplex printing of PDF's.
    How do I resolve?

I have an identical issue to neuegestaltung, but with an HP 5500. I can print single-sided to A3/tabloid successfully but when I try printing duplex the right quarter of the page is cut off on both sides - almost as if it thinks it's printing portrait.

  • Index not getting used in spite of hints

Its Oracle 10g Release 10.2.0.4.0 Hi All,
I have this query in which there is are indexes on Intrument table like this:

I will try to answer the actual "problem". Based on what you have posted, some observations/suggestions
    1) Your plan shows the query is expected to retrieve 2026K rows. Are you sure you need to retrieve that many records? You may want to revisit the "requirement" here.
    2) Continuing above point, you may want to post details of how much time the query is taking to execute at present and how much time do you expect it to take. Another most important details will be how are you measuring the query execution time. With that huge number of records, it is quite possible that more time is being spent in just transferring the query results to the "client" than actual time taken by server to execute the query.
    3) If what you have posted is the order of columns in the indexes on INSTRUMENT table, then which index do you think will help the query execution and how? The order of columns suggest that none of the indexes will be good enough and that seems to be the right choice.
    4) Your predicate section states that filter predicate on INSTRUMENT table generates 2062K rows. How many records exist in INSTRUMENT table? You will need to have many times more records (besides other factors like ordering of table data etc.) in the table to justify the indexed access to fetch these huge number of rows.
    5) Finally, you may want to verify whether the statistics on tables and indexes used by the query are up-to-date.
    Hope this helps.

  • "error compiling movie: unknown error" in premiere cs3.2 / win8

This happens during both Export and Render Work Area, as soon as the renderer hits one of my assets. Initially, this asset was an uncompressed AVI with an alpha channel, over another uncompressed AVI. You can see the Progress bar suddenly get extremely slow when it hits that point, and then it gives the unknown error within about 10 frames. As far as I remember, this NEVER happened when I was rendering on my laptop, running Windows 7 (a former temporary setup while I was waiting to get a new workstation).
I've tried taking some pressure off Premiere... I rendered the sequence in AfterEffects, so Premiere didn't have to deal with the compositing. I also wrapped the asset in a MOV container, with PNG compression, so the files weren't so large. This seemed to help in certain cases -- using this method, I can get through some of the biggest assets. It still happens a bunch of times throughout my sequence, though.
I have the rendering optimized for "memory" in the project settings. I also have more than enough hard drive space on the drive I'm exporting to.
My instinct and limited powers of observation suggest to me that this is a memory problem. This computer's not exactly a world-class production system. However, there are other clips -- mostly HD footage directly from the camera (HVX200) but also some shorter-duration uncompressed AVI's -- that seem to render fine. Plus, even some clips already recompressed to MOV's in AE are causing the same problem. I don't want to have to fiddle with this on every project til I can afford Adobe CC... has anyone else seen problems like this, and found some kind of broader solution to them?

  • Color bars in FCP

I have made a DVD with the FCP NTSC color bars in order to calibrate my TV but no natter how high I turn up the brightness (black level) there is no way for me to see super black distinct from black. I also note that when I view the color bars on my Apple monitor the super black and black fields both have RGB values of (0.0, 0.0, 0.0). My observations suggest that the FCP color bars are not correct, since they can't show me whether I have set the black level too high. Is that right? If so, where can I get a correct file of color bars?
    Thanks,
    John Link

The same color bar files have been used in FCP for a number of years now. If this were the case, there would be a lot more noise about it.
I would think so, but with the FCP NTSC color bars I am not able to perform step 3d of the file for which you provided a link:
Adjust the Brightness control down until there is no visible difference between the left and middle PLUGE bars. The right PLUGE bar (11.5 IRE) should just be visible. The 3.5 (Superblack) and 7.5 (NTSC Black) bars and background should all appear to be the same level of black and blend together evenly. The 11.5 bar should just barely be visible.
Since the left and middle PLUGE bars are identical in the FCP NTSC color bars, there is no visible difference between the left and middle PLUGE bars regardless of how I set the black level.

  • Oracle UCM fails to check in text/xml files

We have an Oracle UCM server that is failing to check in xml files over a certain size - I haven't narrowed down the size limit yet, but a <100kb file will work 100% of the time, while 300+ Kb xml files fail almost all the time, though there has been some success. Image files and zip file succeed on new check ins 100% of the time as well. We have tried with the SOAP API and the UCM new check in form - in both cases we get an empty repsonse from the server. In firefox we get the "The connection was reset" page. I'm at a loss as to explain why, but I have almost no experience with Oracle UCM. This particular server has been running for over a year happily accepting xml files of all sizes, then one day just stopped - as far as I am aware, nobody changed any
    settings/upgraded anything/changed network topology.
When I look in the server output, I don't really see any indication of failure or find any mention of the file name or content title like I do when a file successfully checks in.

    Hello,
I think you should open an SR with support to help out. Be that as it may, here's some observations/suggestions...
    * You are running a 4-year old content server. There have been numerous fixes since then. Your system may have grown to a point where it's hit one of the older issues.
    * Is it possible the XML encoding may have changed? i.e. that whatever generates the XML files is now generating them slightly differently and therefore the encoding is different so check-in doesn't follow the same rules? I'd look at the first line of older files versus the new files which fail. If there's a difference, refer to KM note 978689.1 in our knowledge base.
    * You say there doesn't appear to be anything in the logs, so let's increase them:
    - Login to UCM as Administrator. Go to Administration->System Audit Information. Switch on the Full Verbose Tracing checkbox. In the Active Sections field, put in:
systemdatabase - this will show you what queries and inserts are made to the database and should show whether there's a problem at that level.
requestaudit - this shows you the requests as they come in, as well as a roundup of all requests every 2 minutes. If you see large amounts of time being taken on requests, your server could be creaking because of resources.
publish - tells you about publishing related issues, most XML file check-ins are related to this.
    - Try to check in a file which should fail.
    - Switch off verbose logging (see above) to reduce overhead.
If the OS is Windows then the <install>/config.cfg file needs to have UseRedirectedOutput=true in order to generate a log file for this tracing. On Windows the file is the <install>/bin/IdcServerNT.log file. (if the above config is set)
On *nix it is in the <install>/etc/log file (notice that there is no file extension on the file)
If none of the logs helps you, an SR is probably in order.
    Regards,
    Frank.

  • Word from MSI on the Audio Problem

Here is a letter that MSI sent me last night.
    Quote
    Richard & Glenn,
I have taken some time to read through the audio posts in the nforce forum. There's a lot of posts but it's difficult to find the problem cause based on those posts.  I understand the frustration of having the problem which results to a lot of MSI bashing posts. So, we need to find some direction in order to find the solution. I know you are doing that right now, keep up the good work.
    Just my observations & suggestions:
    1. Not all are having the BKSOD problem
    2. As you know, the board has been out at least a year meaning most of them should have a working system for at least some months before experiencing the problem. So please help find out what have they changed in their config that might caused the problem? I can only guess the problem started after people updated their drivers from nvidia website.
    3. Is there anyone who can have a pattern for duplicating the problem easily? As you know, it would be very difficult for us to solve a problem which cannot be seen in the first place.
    4. There are 2 kinds of sound setup, one is with on-board sound (2 channel)while the other is with the CNR sound (6 channel).
    5.  I have seen 1 or 2 posts which claimed to have solved their problem after going back to some old driver version. Maybe you can convince them to go back to MSI original drivers or older drivers of Nvidia.
    MSI
As you can see, MSI does have an interest in solving the problem.  Has anyone tried going back to the original Drivers from the MSI CD?
Also it would be helpful to try and nail down when the problem started occuring.  When was it? 1 month, 2 months, 5 months ago?
    Richard

Since I don't play games a lot I don't experience this problem often, but I experienced it for the first time while playing Warcraft III. I could play for anywhere from 1-3 hours but eventually the system would lock up with a black screen. Before that I had only played a few other games (mostly Counter-Strike) that did not have this problem.
Switching back to the 1.05 drivers solved my problems with Warcraft III.
Later I wanted to have the audio control panel from the 1.13 drivers back and since I didn't play Warcraft III anymore at that point I just installed them. I noticed that when playing DVD's on my computer the system would freeze after approx. 30 mins - 1 hour. I tried this several times before switching back to the 1.05 drivers. That solved the problem again.
I think it is fair to conclude that for me the problems started after upgrading from the 1.05 drivers. It is very difficult to describe how to reproduce this problem exactly, but on my system the easiest way is to play a DVD movie using the 1.13 drivers for about one hour.
I am using the Dolby Digital output since I have a DD receiver.

As you can see the application uses some 3rd party libraries, like: ACE (v5.4.0)/TAO (v1.4.0), xerces (v2.8), ICU (v1.2) and Firebird2 (v2.1.1) libraries. The libs were compiled using the same compiler. The problem seems to be within runtime linker - the core was dumped before the code started execution.
I have reproduced the issue with two different versions of compiler:
    1. Older
    /usr/bin/CC -V
    CC: Sun C++ 5.9 SunOS_i386 Patch 124864-01 2007/07/25

    SunOS YYY 5.10 Generic_141415-04 i86pc i386 i86pc
Interesting observation, suggesting there is some problem with either linker or runtime linker:
I have a version of the application which runs properly but when I add just one line - include of one of ACE headers to the class which did not contain ACE I end up with the problem described above but if I add any number of includes of ACE headers to the class which already contained (directly or indirectly) ACE code the application still works.
The same source code is compiled on Solaris 9/SPARC platform and it works:
    CC -V
    CC: Sun C++ 5.5 Patch 113817-19 2006/10/13
    uname -a
    SunOS ZZZ 5.9 Generic_118558-35 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V240
Is it any known issue? Thanks in advance for any input.

    Hi
Thanks for the answer. I have analyzed my code and found out that, indeed, some static singleton objects were incorrectly implemented. It has been fixed and the application started when compiled under C++ 5.9, but it does not seem to solve the problem. The application was recompiled using the the newest Sun Studio 12.1 9 (C++ 5.10), and then failed to start again. As per your suggestion regarding the place in the code where the crash occurs, I have compared "__cplus_fini_at_exit" functions for both working and broken applications, compiled under C++ 5.9. Here are parts of code (actually, few last lines of the function) from:

0x0827b335: __cplus_fini_at_exit+0x01d9:        ret      $0x00000000In the broken version, the crash occurs when executing addb     %al,(%eax) instruction at 0x0827b316 (marked above with an arrow). This is because %eax points to some read-only memory - the implementation of one of classes method in this case.
As you can see, in this address there are 5 2-byte long instructions addb     %al,(%eax). Their location in this place seems to make no sense from function logic point of view:
    1. Why would we need to add %al register contents five times in a row, to the memory pointed by %eax, in this place?
    2. The __cplus_fini_at_exit() function in the working application, that basically looks identical, does not have this sequence of instructions at all.
Looking at the memory dump in this place shows that these are physically 10 bytes of zeros ("e8 f4 ff 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 e8 7b d0") at 0x0827b316 (indeed, the instruction addb     %al,(%eax) is binary coded as 0x00 0x00). It seems, that for some reason, the block of 10 bytes with zero value was injected to the compiler generated code.
I would like to stress - this is not a result of program initialization as both listings presented above come from the applications loaded to "dbx" but not started so they only reflect how binaries look like. I have made one more test - I have edited broken binary and replaced these 10 bytes of zeros with ten "No Operation" instructions ("e8 f4 ff 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 e8 7b d0"). Here is output from "dbx", after the changes made:

0x0827b335: __cplus_fini_at_exit+0x01d9:        ret      $0x00000000This time the application has started. As everything occurs inside compiler-generated function it seems to me that this analysis strongly suggests that there is a problem with a compiler which puts 10 bytes of mess into __cplus_fini_at_exit.
The binaries used above were built using:
    /usr/bin/CC -V
    CC: Sun C++ 5.9 SunOS_i386 Patch 124864-01 2007/07/25
I have also checked Sun Studio 12.1 (C++ 5.10) compiler but the attempts to get working application failed (the same problem with zero bytes).
Have you ever encountered similar problem? Are you able to confirm/deny whether it is related to the compiler?
    Thanks for further assistance
