G4 powers on then shuts off

so yea my g4 powers on the monitor is complete black and then after a few seconds the mac shuts off plz help me

See if it will Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup).
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
/sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Any thing show up on these modes?

  • My ipod classic turns on with apple logo then shuts off about 30 seconds later, when plugged in my windows and itunes will not recognize it.

earlier my itunes told me that my files were corrupted and I needed to restore, so I did.  In the middle of the restore I lost internet connection. Now my computer and Itunes will not recognize my Ipod and if it is not plugged in when I turn the Ipod on it only shows the apple logo then shuts off after 30 seconds.  If it is plugged in it will charge, but Itunes and Windows will not recognize it.  I have tried the menu + select shutoff multiple times with no change.  All it will say while it is charging is do not disconnect.

The clicking sound is your iPod Hardisk, trying to retract and find the boot sector unsuccesfully.
Hopefully, you can do the iPod Disk Diagnostic as in this great post by tt2., it wont fix your problem, but let you know, how dire is your Hardisk health.
So only as a last resort, one way, to get the stuck Hardisk head free, is to bang the iPod on a rubber mouse pad, when you reset it, but do it at your own risk, some very lucky guys got it working again for the next 14 months, like myself.

Macbook Pro starts up, has a small loading bar, and then shuts off after a few seconds, but the Windows bootcamp partition works fine.
The repair disc option (using install disc) failed, and the computer cannot locate the original Mac side partition. Only Bootcamp appears under options to "restore from backup" or reinstall. The repair disc options says it should be repaired but doesn't seem to know how.

    Any ideas?

Hold c or option key and boot off the 10.6 installer disk, run DU Repair from there.
run through this list of fixes 1-8
Step by Step to fix your Mac
If it doens't work, you can recover files if you don't have any current OS X file backups, then grab what you can out of Bootcamp
Use Data Rescue installed on the extenral boot drive ($100) to read the bits of the internal (non-filevaulted) drive to retrieve OS X data files if you can't get them off manually via drag and drop methods.
Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive
If you want to clone Windows, use WinClone and another drive. However it's likely compromised, unless it something you did in Windows, like trying to create a new parttition perhaps?
Then perform a Zero Erase and install of 10.6 as shown here (on the entire drive, not only the parittions), this will give a new GUID partition table, EFI and map off bad sectors, totally fresh everything.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
You cna use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the new extenral setup to the new scrubbed internal drive. Recreate Bootcamp and WinClone back or fresh install Windows into Bootcamp like before. OR opt to use virtual machine software which is safer.
Windows in BootCamp or Virtual Machine?
Windows 7 can write to the boot drives GUID partition map (unlike XP), this is likely why it's borked now.

^Hi.  yesterday, after trying to study on my iphone 4, i accidentally clicked okay on something that poped up while flipping through notecards.  it told me that it was "updating", i had my phone updated to ios7 but not 7.0.2..  i tried to shut if off to see if it would stop the update, because i didnt want it to do that.  after a few minutes i turned it back on and it was still updating.  it then shut off and a screen poped up telling me to plug my phone into iturnes.  itunes recognized my phone and said it was in recovery mode and i would have to restore it.  i have tried to restore it three times and nothing has happened.  it will go all the way through the restore process, say it is finished, and then nothing will happen.  my phone will not stay in DFU mode, i have tried for 20 minutes to get it to.  i have even uninstalled and reinstalled itunes.  i dont know what to do and i have been without a phone for alomost 24 hours.  how do i get my phone back to normal?  can i fix it or could at&t replace it?  or do i have to take it to an apple store? Please help me.

Has your phone been jailbroken in the past? If yes, this could be a reason for not being able to finish the restore process.
If not, did you try to restore it on a different computer?

I understand your computer will only boot for about 2 seconds and then shut off, is that correct? I will try to help you with this issue.
With the repair that was done, do you recall what was done to fix the issue previously?
Please respond when you can .

  • Ipod will start-up then shut off

Hi - need your help before vacation on a long holiday weekend. As of yesterday, my video ipod was working great. Now, when I turn it on or plug it in, it continually tries to turn on by showing the Apple logo then shuts off and keeps doing this. It will not play nor will recognize that it is plugged into the computer or wall. I am using different cords and also went through the 5 "R"s...would love some insight or tricks to make it work.
    Thanks a million!

Hi, is the battery fully charged?
If you have already followed the 5rs without success it could be probably a HD issue... I suggest to go to your local Apple Store and ask for support, they can help you if the iPod is under warranty
    Bye

  • HT4623 just updated my iPhone 4s to ios6, now my phone won't turn back on. The apple logo comes on and sits then shuts off. I have held down the home button and on/off switch several times to reset, but same problem persists.

just updated my iPhone 4s to ios6, now my phone won't turn back on. The apple logo comes on and sits then shuts off. Then comes back on and just sits.I have held down the home button and on/off switch several times to reset, but same problem persists.

Place iPhone on Wall Charger for at least 10 minutes. Then keep on charger and Reset, hold both home and power buttons until the iPhone begins to start, this can take about 20 seconds of holding both buttons while on charger. If still problem, open iTunes 10.7 on computer, connect iPhone to computer with USB Cable, hold both home and power buttons for about 20 seconds until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode, then click Restore button of iTunes. If still problem, try DFU Mode Restore, here are the steps. Open iTunes on computer. Connect iPhone to computer with USB cable. Hold both Home and Power buttons, after exactly 10 seconds release the Power Button, keep holding the Home button until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode, usually about 20 seconds time. If the iPhone screen is black, blank this is DFU Mode. Click the Restore button of iTunes. DFU Mode can be difficult to enter sometimes, just keep trying. DFU Mode is a black, blank screen with iTunes saying Recovery Mode. If still problem and there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation and take to Apple for resolution.

  • 8100AV starts then shuts off

I could use some guidance on troubleshooting steps to isolate this problem. My Mac was stored for about 3 years in its box in an AC controlled environment. Now we want to get some files from it - it started up and ran for about 10 minutes then shut off suddenly. It would not restart. Unplugged the cord after waiting about 15 minutes and it started again ran for 5 minutes and shut off (not shutdown just off like it was unplugged). The next day tried again and it started for about 10 seconds before shutting off. The first two times it started it asked to set the date and time so the pROM battery must be dead.
What steps should I take to troubleshoot? I've done the following:
    1. try a different power cord
    2. try the keyboard button and the button in the back
    3. vaccum the power supply a little (not very well) it is not super dirty

Can you feel the power supply fan's flow of air out the back of the computer's case? What you've described can occur when a failing or dead fan doesn't maintain a tolerable temperature within the power supply. When it gets hotter than it should, a thermal trip kicks in and turns off the computer to prevent any permanent damage. The fact that you can restart the computer after a cooling down period, only to see the computer shut down again after a brief period, is symptomatic of power supply fan failure. Check the fan's ouput, and if it's only producing a weak flow of air, you should open up the computer's case and try blowing out any internal dust from the power supply/cooling fan. You'd be surprised to see how much dust gathers on the backside of the fan blade itself, even though the power supply looks relatively clean from the outside. I'd recommend using a can of compressed air and not a vacuum cleaner internally, because the vacuum cleaner's plastic attachments acquire a static charge. With the cover off, turn ON the computer and visually observe the fan's movement. If it runs intermittently or not at all, you should disassemble the power supply and replace it. Some users have gotten more life out of old/weak/noisy fans by spraying the shaft with WD40 or an equivalent product, to lubricate the worn sleeve bearing. The results of this procedure are mixed, because in cases of fan failure, the cause is often a weak magnetic field that's inadequate to spin the blade.

  • My 2007 iMac (lion) starts, logo appears, status bar shows up, takes 2 mins to finish, then shuts off

My 2007 iMac (lion) starts, logo appears, status bar shows up, takes 2 mins to finish, then shuts off. Please help!

This sounds like a hard drive issue. First I would try to boot to safe mode: OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support
If that works do a backup ASAP with Time Machine: Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support or copy your important files to an external drive if they are not already backed up. If that does not work, Boot to recovery:  OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
The next step would be verifying and if needed repairing the hard drive using Disk Utility.
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support
If it successfully repairs, do a restart and see if it boots as normal. If it cannot be repaired, it means that the hard drive has failed/is failing. If you do not have the data backed up you could try getting the data using target disk mode: OS X Mountain Lion: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode ,booting from an external drive that has OS X installed on it: OS X: Installing OS X on an external volume - Apple Support, or 3rd party data recovery service.
After data is backed up or recovered, you would need to do an erase and install of OS X: OS X: How to erase and install - Apple Support
If it fails to erase, then the hard drive needs to be replaced.
