G5 IMAC STARTUP FAILURE

When I try to turn on my Imac, several things have happened or can happen.
Grey screen comes up, loud "clicking" sound, fan kicks in, then screen either goes grey, or blue with alternating folders (question mark/os folder), or I get the white screen with grey apple but nothing beyond that. I have read other posts and found some similar circumstances, but I thought I would post anyway. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I purchased my computer in January of this year if that helps at all.

I notice that you have an iMac G5 that are normally delivered with OSX 10.4x (Tiger). How or why did you install 10.3.1? Is that a typo? Apple says you can't install an older version OS than what was originally installed, unless you received a G5 with Panther. In that event, at least update to 10.3.9. Perhaps this might be the source of your problem. From the Apple icon in the menu bar click on "About This Mac" and check your basic computer profile. Click on the "More Info" for greater detail. Do you have a Rev. A or B? If you eventually are able to "boot up", run Repair Permissions in Disk Utility located in the Utilities Folder inside your Applications Folder. With more detailed input from you, more solutions are possible.

  • New iMac, startup failure, question mark: TH00-9.000 TH0O-9.000

    Hi everyone!
My new alu iMac worked for 3 weeks. Today it suddenly crashed. Now the boot process stops with a flashing question mark.
Disk Repair didn't find any harddisks to repair.
System Profiler stated "There was an error while scanning for Serial-ATA devices."
AHT reports the following error code: 4sns/1/40000000: TH00-9.000 harddisk failure.
The error appears during (or after) the main logic board test while the fans spin up.
Looking closely the space between the zeros in TH00 is significantly smaller. So maybe it's not a zero but an upper case O.

Please look over the following Apple Advice letter:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1440
My guess is the internal HD has crashed, this of course would be covered by your 1 year warranty so you should contact Apple immediately for repair. Please remember hard drives are not made by Apple and they do fail. Some last weeks some last 10 years, unfortunately they are very unpredictable. While this is frustrating this is why you have a warranty. If you have been using Time Machine then once the internal drive has been replaced restoring will be painless with TM.
If you have added an external HD or have a flash drive inserted in one of the USB slots that can confuse the machine so it doesn't know where the startup volume is. Try re-starting by holding down the Option key, if the machine sees start up disks it will highlight them, then choose the internal HD. Once the machine has started then go to System Preferences-Startup Disk and select the internal disk.
If that doesn't work please post back and let us know what happened. BTW you don't state where you are located but you may be covered by AppleCare. Look in your owners manual for the phone number in your area and contact Apple, you have 90 days of free telephone support.

  • IMac startup failure

Earlier today my iMac crashed in a whole new way for me. The display tore (best way I can think to decribe it) then went to a gray screen. I waited hoping it fix itself, but the random colors started flashing on the screen. I had booted then restartwd after thirty seconds. Everything came back, sent the error report to apple and then it happened again say thirty minutes later. Now it won't even boot. I get an error screen saying to reboot during startup. It will not let me launch the hardware diagnostic tools, nor boot from the startup disk. I'm having to resort to sending this on my iPhone. I think I'll have to take it in for service, but I need it for finals this week. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    HI,
Here's a list of startup key combinations for Intel iMacs. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1533
You might be able to boot in Safe Mode holding down the Shift key while starting up the iMac.
    What is Safe Mode? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
If there is any chance of getting your important files off the drive and you have another Mac, you could try Firewire Target Disk Mode

  • TM drive doesn't always mount on iMac startup

    Hi,
TM seems to work well most of the time. Once in a great while though, TM drive doesn't mount on iMac startup, and if I don't notice the missing icon on the desktop, backups don't happen.
TM drive is a Seagate Free Agent USB 500G. It's connected directly, not through a hub. The drive has no power switch, so I leave it alone -- out of sight, out of mind.
    Two questions:
    1. Is is something that I am doing or the way I'm set up that causes this infrequent failure?
    2. When I notice the missing connection, what's the best way to get the TM drive reconnected? What I do now to reconnect is: shut down the computer, pull the power plug on the TM drive, restart the computer, plug the drive back in.
    Your thoughts appreciated.
    Jerry

My understanding is that the disk doesn't mount, ie not visible to the system. In that event I can't see that changing Time Machine's disk allocation will achieve anything. It's a hardware initialisation issue.
If the disk isn't mounted (personally I'd check System Profiler to be absolutely sure) then there can't be any transfers going on so you should be safe to just unplug, pause to let the electronics settle and then plug back in. If that works, and the problem is rare, that might be the best way to go, although it might be that there is some problem with the drive which is not good if you are relying on it for back up. I don't know enough about hard drives to comment on that aspect (maybe it's just a driver issue?).

  • IMac Screen Failure

    Hey,
I was just wondering if any of you are experiencing screen failures as noted in the link below? If so, is it the aluminum iMacs, or is it the white ones?
    http://www.macnn.com/articles/07/11/30/imac.screen.failure/
    Thanks!!

    Hi autiger
Which iMac do you have and are you having any display issues?
I don't believe it can be jinxed, so I'll do a little bragging here. My 17" Early Core Duo w/Apple Care purchased Jan. 21 2006 is great and has no gradient light/dark, no dead pixels and only a very very small backlight bleed. The sRGB and Adobe RGB (1998) profiles were OK, but the display seamed a little washed out. After more than a few tries, and some good advice from Barbara B and others here I was able to set a new profile that is much richer than any of the factory supplied profiles.
All display manufactures and computer system will have there share of issues, some more that others. I have had more than a few Apple's over the last 20+ years without a single hardware problem. I do have to admit though, that with the all-in-one Intel I bought Apple Care for the first time ever???

  • Imac startup: three beeps continuously, monitor remains dark.

imac startup: three loud beeps continuously, monitor remains dark.

According to Apple's "Power On Self-Test Beep Definition - Part 2" doc, 3 beeps means "no good banks".
Do what Niel says.  Reseat all the dimms.  Maybe even shuffle them around.

I Lost my Installation Disk what can i do.. please help in this.... iMac Startup Apple Logo Progress Bar Hangs.....

You likely have a problem with the drive as the progres bar is trying to fix the drive and it can't.
You need to backup your user info off the machine as soon as possible.
hold the shift key on booting, that may get you in.

Almost certainly, some sort of hardware problem on your logic board.

  • How to fix windows 7 startup failure? Windows startup repair cannot help

Recently, my laptop have problem with the startup and unfortunately it is showing crash dump error as well.
This is the error mesage for startup issues: c000021a fatal system error, intial session process or system process terminate
and this is error message for crash dump: STOP: 0x0000000A (0xFFFFF80003BEDE60, 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000008, 0xFFFFF80003BEDE60)
So, when i start my laptop it comes up with the startup c000021a fatal system error. I tried to go to startup repair and chose the "Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)" after that it shown system crash dump error message.
Unfortunately, I did not make the restore point. I want to reinstall my windows but it cant boot from CD/DVD due to startup failure. I already choose the booting sequence to CD/DVD as first sequences but it still does not work.
Anyone can help me with this issues?

    Hi Arie K,
Please explain a bit about the following question for better analyzation:
    1. What changes have you made before this issue?
    2. Do you receive the same error message when we use the normal boot, safe mode and Last Known Good Configuration? If no please share it with us.
    3. What error messages do you receive when we try to boot from CD/DVD?
We could try to use the USB driver to performance the system restore or reinstall.

I've run Onyx, Cocktail & MacCleanse with minimal success... fails a little less frequently for a brief period.
I'm fairly conversant with computers but I'm either missing something simple or I'm way out of my depth.
I've got no ego about this and would appreciate any advice.
    Thanks

I'm not real good with the log messages, but I would try a few things.
    1. RAM
        a. Check to make sure that all the modules are firmly seated in the slots.
        b. What RAM was used, recheck the spec's?
        c. Reinstall the original RAM modules.
    2. USB and FireWire devices
        a. Disconnect all of your USB and FireWire devices and see if it will startup normally.
        b. If so, then slowly start adding the devices back on one at a time and test each device.
    3. Checking and/or removing some third party software and drivers

        b. com.seagate.driver.PowSecDriverCore

  • Imac G5 v. 10.3.6 with multiple problems startup failure + error code +

I have tired numerous suggestions without writing, but no luck.  Here's the deal: I may have erased important files in the start up volume.  Don't know exactly.  Upon start up I get to the white screen with the gray apple icon and the time indicator circle.  It stays in on this screen until the fan starts to speed up and I am forced to manually shut down. I ran a short test of the hardware and everything passed.  Ran an extended test and there was an error code 2STF/8/3:S-ATA Bus 0 - Master reported in the mass storage.  Went to the utilities of the install disk and noticed there are two applications under volumes Mac OS x and OS 9 (computer was purchased from ebay used with Final Cut Pro already included). Also there is a "dev" harddrive seen with the "System" harddrive????  The system files/folder seem to be normal except that the Library is empty.  A Library does exist under the "root" folder followed by perferences.  I don't know if it matters but when we bought this computer we put our previous system onto it.  Recently I tired to reinstall by saving the archives and an error was reported and I was asked to try to reinstall again.  Again I returned to the disk utilities and ran the first aid on the System and it reported that the the reserved fields in the catalog record have incorrect data, followed by invalid sibling lind (red font) and Rebuiling Catalog B-tree. The volume system reported it could not be repaired (-9972). Any advice at this point would be appreciated. My husband is about to kill me.  We are living in Costa Rica and the nearest applestore is 3 hours away. We just got this computer back from them. It took 3 months to replace the powersupply.

Hi Dardaner, and a warm welcome to the forums!
You have problems with the Hard Drive, how bad I'm not certain.
Do you need the Data that is on that Drive?
If so, unfortunately DU can't fix all that much, your best bet is DiskWarrior, you need the CD though.
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
If you can afford to start over and lose all that data, then, perhaps...
    "Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume, then chose MacOS Extended Journalled.
    6. Click Erase & look for Options. choose Zero 1 pass."
You may be able to reinstall then, but of course nothing you had before will be there.

  • IMac startup error

I've been having some issues with my iMac freezing (especially after sleep) and sometimes not starting up. It usually makes a scratchy noise when this happens and I wonder if there is something wrong with the hard drive. However I have run several tests, hardware tests, verifying the disk, anything like that that I could find, and nothing ever shows up to have an error. The only error message I have is sometimes when it starts up and has trouble it will go to a terminal screen and tells me: respawning to quickly throttling
    too many failures in succession
    local host:/ I have no name! #
That's not the entire message per se but that's the gist of it and I don't where to find a log of errors like that. Also sometimes when it won't start up at all I have had to reinstall the software to make it work again, and once when I tried it was unable to find the disk. I ended up calling Apple and they had me erase the harddrive and then reinstall, it worked but it is still having occasional startup issues.
So my question is basically either does anyone know what's wrong, or what should I tell Apple support because right now it is running fine, and usually the problem goes away after a bit but I am living in fear of it crashing again on me during a school project or something. If anyone could help I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I would backup your data frequently, and just be wary of what could happen. Otherwise I wouldn't obsess about it. See my FAQ on backing up*:

    Obsession can quicken failure.

  • Imac startup prob.

when I turn on my imac it starts up, you pick your user and it goes into the desktop, then within 30 seconds the pinwheel pops up and the comp. sits there frozen.
I tried to startup is safe mode but it will not, after the tone i hold shift wait till the gray apple screen with gear spinning let go of shift, then i sits for a min and shuts off.
    I need help!

ok i did a hardware check, all was good.
then I did the disk repair as you said and it stopped and a pop up said
error encountered:the underlying task reported failure on exit.
in the repair list it said..
    verify and repair disk "-"
    checking hfs plus volume
    checking extent overflow file
    catalog file
ivalid key length (in red fonts)
    volume check failed( red)
error: the underlying task reported failure on exit(red)
    1 hfs volumed checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error(red)
    now what do i do?

  • Graphite slot-loading G3 iMac drive failure

Hi. My G3 Graphite slot-loading iMac hard drive died this past week, or at least I thing it did. It has the original hard drive in it and is at least 10 years old, maybe more. It is a 60g drive with 2 partitions: 50g for OS X and 10g for OS 9.2. Now I hardly ever use the OS 9.2 partition, but I just never got rid of it.
It's the OS X partition that failed. I was working on it this past Saturday and I notice it was acting strange and slow. It froze on me twice and I was force to shut it down both times by pressing the white glowing on button on the front. Well, after that second restart is when the trouble started. I heard the start-up chime and that was it, just a gray screen for a long time, then the question mark and then, after several minutes, it booted into OS 9.2.
The OS X partition was completely unavailable. The only way I was able to see it was to boot the G3 in target disc mode and attached it thru firewire to my G4 iMac. In Disk Utility, the OS X partition came up as an unmounted drive. Disk Utility could not verify or fixed it. So I tried Disk Warrior 4. Disk Warrior was unable to fix it. So I purchased Prosoft Data Rescue ll and a new internal hard drive.
Data Rescue ll was able to recover all my files, but with some errors. So, I went and purchased a hard drive enclosure, put the internal hard drive in it, had Data Rescue II clone the entire G3 hd, and then had Data Rescue recover from the clone, with the same results. Prosoft support decipher the error messages to be reporting that some data was missing. Still waiting to hear from them exactly what that means.
Now I wrote all that to get to this question: If a partition fails on a single hd, does that mean the whole drive is bad? I thought that when you drive fails, you would not be able to see any of the partitions on it. Obviously, I'm going to replace it with the new internal drive that is currently serving as my clone drive. But, I was just wondering how this drive failed. I was going to try and see if I can reinitialized it and if so, reinstall OS X and see what happens. Or do you thing that is a waste of time? As i write this, the G3 is running in target disc mode and the drive sounds fine, not making any noise what so ever. I was wondering if this is an actual drive failure or somehow, when I rebooted the system folder got so damaged that it put the partition in the state it is currently in.
I'd like to know becuase, if I can just reinstall OS 10.4 and have access to that partition, I could back-up all my files that way and possibly have no missing data.
So any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Is the OS X partition installed at the beginning of the hard drive? If so, that's the area of the platter(s) that has seen the most usage over the years, so it may have developed surface damage, affecting the reliability of reads and writes. This wouldn't necessarily cause a difference in operational noise coming from the drive. One partition may continue functioning normally, while the other one occupying a bad area of the drive continues to have errors. The problem with copying files from a quirky drive is that you can likely duplicate the same corrupted files as were found on the original. If time is of no consequence, you could erase that partition and install Tiger again, but I'd use the original installer disk and not clone from the problematic partition. I had a 40 GB drive in a beige G3 that would cause unexpected system hangs. Because Drive Setup's Test Disk function and NDD's Media Scan would hang after a few minutes into the process, I estimated the problem area to be within the first 2 GBs of the drive. My solution was to create (3) partitions, with the first one set to 2 GBs, and the second and third partitions equally dividing the remaining drive capacity. With Drive Setup, I de-selected the "Mount on Startup" option for partition 1, so it disappeared from the desktop. I installed the OS on the second partition and designated the third for file storage. With that partition configuration, the G3 never had the unexpected system hangs that had plagued it previously.

  • Multiple iMac LogicBoard failures

So 3 years ago I took the plunged and converted the house to Macs. Nice experience generally. Yet in the last 2 months I have had two logicboard failures on two iMacs. The cost to fix these was quoted at over $1,000 each computer. Obviously given the age of the machines, this is not a viable fix.
I am now considering moving back to PC's (my 3 year old Mac laptop is also playing up).
After logicboard failure #1, I reluctantly forked out $2K for a new machine. I racked this up as a "bad" and unusual unit. #2 comes along and fails and it makes me mad. Worse, no sympathy from the guys in the Apple Store. I ask "Surely for a machine of this age, noone would possibly pay for a $1K logicboard? Isn't this priced to basically make you buy a new machine?" All I got back was smiles (they really didn't care it seems).
    Question:
    - Are Mac's prone to hardware failures?
    - If they do get hardware failures are you basically just in trouble given the absurd component prices to fix ($700 for the logicboard part alone)? How can Apple justify $700 for a logicboard part?
    - Does Apple offer any discounts to people who have had these multiple bad experiences? (I'm partly kidding here, but also hoping)
My Mac laptop is playing up so I may be two Mac's down. I am considering going back to the darkside now and buying PC's again.
    Anyone got any comments?
    Thanks

That a UPS unit would have prevented your logic board failures. Properly designed power supplies do not need a UPS unit in this country. In some third world countries where the power is unreliable on a daily basis with large power swings, they are a must have.
In my opinion, the G5 iMac's were a poor design with inadequate heat dissipation, weak power supplies and logic boards. Most of them ran for years, but an inordinate number of them had multiple failures. The new aluminum models are a much better design with most of the high heat components located at the top of the machine.
I had no hardware problems with my eight year old Dell...but I'm still sticking with Apple because of their superior software performance.
Good luck with what ever you decide...virg
