G5 quad + suptertalent ssd 60 gig as internal start volume wont boot

hi,
after superdupering my hd to the ssd (in a firewire 800 external case) i exchanged the 2nd hd with the ssd, but the g5 doenst want to boot from it. (worked well though when connect to the firewire port) …
the ssd shows in the apple harddisc tool program, and i think even in the startup manager but when starting it never gets further than the apple logo, and after a while the fans go on full blast.
any idea?
thx,
jens

Okay, when cloning in FW case with SD, you still need to insure that the "Ignore Ownership" is not selected; repair permissions on the drive before attempting to boot.
I haven't seen any threads and was wondering about this, and Quad G5 is the most likely to work - it allows using GUID for system and drives for one thing, and it works with WD 10K VelociRaptor which other G5s don't like.
I'd check and see if OWC own SSD have any notes regarding use in G5.

  • Internally started external transaction,release causes ConcurrencyException

    I will try to explain my problem with a very very simplified code example.
    (The code is not entirely correct; consider it to be pseudocode)
    Below the onMessage method of a Message Driven (TestMDB) bean is shown.
    The mdb bean is configured not to have a container managed transaction; Transaction attribute is 'NotSupported'.
    Toplink is configured to use a external transaction controller.
    onMessage(Message message)
    try
    String sessionId = Guid.generateGUID(message);
    uow = getUnitOfWork(sessionid);
    ObjectToPersist obj = new ObjectToPersist();
    uow.registerNewObject(obj);
         // the following release would normally only be performed in case of an exception
    uow.release();
    public UnitOfWork (String sessionId) {
    ClientSession session = (ClientSession)sessionProvider.getSession(sessionId);
    uow = session.getActiveUnitOfWork();
    if(uow == null)
    uow = session.acquireUnitOfWork();
    Now when this very simple piece of code above is executed an external transaction is internally started.
    But the statement "uow.release()" produces the following exception stack:
    Exception [TOPLINK-2004] (Oracle TopLink - 10g Release 3 (10.1.3.3.0) (Build 070620)): oracle.toplink.exceptions.ConcurrencyException

    If      "uow.release()" is replaced by "uow.commit()" all works fine. It is ok to commit a uow that is associated with an external
    transaction that is internally started.
    But why does the release cause an exception?
    Specifications:
    Appserver: oc4j(9.0.4)
    Toplink 10.1.3.3
    EJB 2.1

    This is odd. From the stack even though the uow.release() is rolling back the JTA transaction, it is still raising the beforeCompletion event (which is incorrect, I think a issue with OC4J 9.0.4 but was fixed in OC4J 10.2 or 10.1.3).
    Note that you are using a deprecated transaction controller, try using
    oracle.toplink.transaction.oc4j.Oc4jTransactionController, this might work correctly. Otherwise you could customize your transaction controller to ignore the beforeCompletion callback if the transaction is in a rollback state.

  • 2nd SSD installation in internal 2nd drive bay

    Help please, I am trying to find out where I can purchase the drive mounting/retaining caddy in order to add a 2nd SSD in the internal empty slot. I purchased a Samsung EVO 500 GB 2.5" SSD and I would like to install it in this 2nd empty drive bay. I can't find any reference anywhere for the mounting bracket. Thanks for the help

    Yes, I have seen a case where it was too large many times on YouTube. With some Caddy's they are made for SSD's so you got to watch out. I have two SSD's installed. If I could go back I probably would have just done one. When you take out the optical drive you can cause yourself problems. Such as Apple Care not covering you anymore.
    It also made my bluetooth have problems, even though the cable is seated right. Now I have to use a USB mouse and keyboard when I hook it to my thunderbolt display. Although some people have no problems.
    Make sure you have home owners insurance before you do this. With Apple Care, you can put the optical drive back in if you need repairs, but it's possible while doing it, you can do something that makes it obvious you messed with it.
    I'd just put an SSD in the main bay, and then take your other drive and put it in an external USB enclosure which is like 15 bucks on Amazon and run it off the USB.

  • My SSD wont boot up

    I bought a Samsung SSD 850 EVO and make a copy from my MacBook Pro 13 MID 2012 Yosemite 10.10.2 With OSX using Carbon Copy Cloner. Then I boot up my SSD from the Enclosure and works fine.But when i Replaced With my HD ssd wont boot up and question mark folder appears.Its not my sata cable Because my old HD boot fine.

    gacksen, welcome to the forum,
    did you image the SSD with it inserted in your X220 or attached to another system externally or internally before inserting it into your X220?
    If the answer is that it wasn't inserted in the X220 when you imaged it, please try again with it inserted.
    You may want to re-think imaging the drive and opt for a clean install; see here and here.

    When I start up in Boot Camp it says that updates weren't properly installed and the system is reloading.  It then automatically restarts in Mountain Lion. What is wrong?
    I am currently using Windows 8 and also have Microsoft office installed but those are the only thing on my partitioned space.  I don't know if I installed 32 or 64 version of Windows 8.  Could that be the problem?

    Can you deal with XP not being supported by Apple and Microsoft? no security etc?
    Can you use Windows in a VM instead of natively?
    All the drives other than the one with XP will need to be pulled.
    Always have backups of your system, clone that you can boot from.
    Boot Camp 3.0 was the last supported. You don't need OEM 10.4.6 DVD and your system with EFI and SMC updates (Aug/Sept 2007) may not like it.
    32-bit version of Windows on EFI-32 will only get 1.9GB RAM.
    Installing 64-bit Windows 7 is a bit harder. Vista pre-SP1 64-bit was the best match for install on my 1,1 and that was 2006-2007.
    The new owner needs to deal with this, not you. And really they are better off with a $400 PC instead. Or use a VM.
    the owner should put in a new SSD for the system and $44 buys 4 x 2GB RAM. Together it will run just fine. 500GB SSD now $250 / $135 250GB. Biggest issue is a video card on these.
    The grey screen - you upgraded the graphic card perhaps.
    Unplug everything. Hit power for 5-10 seconds. Reconnect cables for mouse/kb and power, and monitor. You just reset SMC. Yes there is a small button - pull drive #4 and any controller in top slot #4 to see the SMC motherboard reset button but you don't need to.
    Any PCIe cards can also play a role and factor into XP or Windows not working.

  • Cannot boot into mountain lion after I have set the start volume to CD drive

    Previously I need to boot from CD so I have set the start volume to CD drive by pressing command+option+P+R at the same time and change the start up volume to CD drive.
    But right now, it can just start from CD but cannot boot into Mac OS (Mountain Lion) which is installed in the hard disk.
    I have tried to press command+option+P+R at teh same time during bootup but seems like right now it doesn't recognize this command.  I have tried pressing "X" or "option" or spacebar, etc during bootup but still it tries to boot from CD.
    Anyway I can change the start volume back to my internal hard disk?
    I have even disassembled my iMac and the CD drive to remove the previous CD as well.  Then it still tries to boot from CD drive but now saying the device is not bootable and ask me to insert a bootup disk.  I then tried to put the Mountain lion installation DVD (I previously created the installation DVD by following the DIY way from this link http://www.cultofmac.com/180925/how-to-make-a-bootable-disk-or-usb-drive-of-os-x -mountain-lion/) there in the drive but it still said the device is not bootable.
    I have disassembled my iMac again to remove the mountain lion disk right now.  So the CD drive is now empty.  Anyway I can change the start volume back to my internal hard disk?
    This is really frustrating .. Hope someone can help.
    thanks!

  • 10.4.8 Combo Install on my Internal HD won't Boot!

    I've posted before about one of my internal Hard Drives not booting. The Hard Drive works, and shows that it can be Booted thru System Preferences/Start up Drive , as well as thru the Install Disk, YET, will not actually Boot... it decides to boot on antoher smaller, older drive.
    After a week of fighting with this issue, I finally got the Bigger, newer Hard Drive to Boot, after zeroing it out, and reinstalling OSX 4.0, and Migrating my back up FireWire (which will boot (10.4.7))
    While using the less prefered smaller Start-Up Drive, I Downloaded the 10.4.8 Combo, and installed it onto the Internal HD that I would rather use. I'm assuming there is a good reason to upgrade to 10.4.8, which is why I wanted to upgrade this HD, YET it once again fails to boot!!
    Any ideas???

    find a way to update the "driver" for that OSX version on that hard drive. i'd start there first.

    orshikhfromsc,
    boot from the Mac OS X Install DVD that originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro (by holding down the C key as it starts up). When the desktop appears, select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and erase your internal disk. After it’s been erased, reformat it. After it’s been reformatted, exit Disk Utility and reïnstall the version of Mac OS X from that DVD onto your internal disk. After that version of Mac OS X has been reïnstalled, boot from your internal disk and run Software Update to get it up-to-date within that version; that should allow you to redownload and reïnstall Mavericks, if  desired. If Mavericks is reïnstalled, run Software Update again to get it up to date.
    If you no longer have the two grey installation DVDs, you can purchase a replacement set from either Apple or iFixit.

  • Headphone and Internal Speaker Volume Levels

    I saw a topic about this earlier, but it has become locked, so I thought I would post another to see if anyone has any information about it. Until recently, I have been able to set my headphone volume and internal speaker volume at different levels. In other words, I can set the speakers to a certain volume, plug in my headphones, set the headphones to a different volume, then unplug the headphones and the volume changes back to what it was before I plugged in the headphones. I don't know exactly when it started happening, but I can no longer set these at two separate levels. I have seen that other people are having this problem, so I know it isn't just something stupid that i am doing. Anyone know why this is happening, or what I can do about it? Any help would be much appreciated.

    Assuming that you're not listening to songs that have been imported at very low level, the next thing to do is a full Restore. A Restore will remove everything form your iPod, reset it and then put back onto the iPod only what is in your iTunes library. So if you have items that are not in your library (and therfore on the computer) you need to sort that out first.
    I believe it will also reset your user data in any Apps you use. There is a backup method for this, but I'm not sure how it works as I've never tried it.
    If that doesn't work, there must be a hardware issue, which means booking it in for service.

  • Emergency time.. Mac wont boot using my new SSD

    I recently aquired a new Crucial SSD and installed it in my Macbook late 2008. I had cloned it from origonal hard drive, and everything worked like a dream!
    Tonight, i replaced my optical drive with my old HDD using the HDD optical drive Caddy. That all went relativley smooth, everything going back where it should, except one thing, i broke the four prong sub woofer plug, while spurging it out. This isnt my emergency though.
    After everything was put back in its rightful place, and i powered up. My screen started flashing the folder with a question mark... so i powered off and booted pressing option key for Startup Disk. Now the problem came.
    My new SSD was no longer anywhere to be seen! The only disk bootable was my old hard drive named 'Funks Brain' and a recovery disk.
    I have rebooted a few times now, and i cannot seem to locate my SSD drive, which is installed in the origonal hard drive section of my computer!
    Please help me. I am at a loss.

    Trouble shooting hardware issues from a distance is iffy at the best of times. It is a process of elimination. My first thought would be to reinstall the SSD physically. Go through the whole process of installing the SSD once again. The idea here is something might have come loose. (Obviously the software installation on the SSD worked since you were able to boot from it.)
    If that does not get you anywhere, I would reomve the SSD and put it an external enclosure and see if you can boot from it that way. That will tell you if the SSD suddenly decided to go belly up - doubtful, but worth checking.

  • Dhcpcd does not start automatically on boot

    Hi everyone,
    I have just installed Arch (64 bit) and am running on a dynamic, wired connection.
    I followed the Beginners' Guide and enabled the dhcpcd service during the installation so that it would start automatically on boot.
    systemctl enable [email protected]
    However, I currently must issue the command "dhcpcd" each boot before the internet starts to work.
    Does anyone know how I can automate this process or if I need to further configure my network connection?
    Thank you in advance.

    I also tried the following but it did not work either and I had to issue "dhcpcd" before internet started working.
    Install and configure wired and wireless networking
    # pacman -S netcfg ifplugd
    # cd /etc/network.d
    # ln -s examples/ethernet-dhcp .

  • New 2nd Mac Pro boot drive (ssd) how do I know which is booted?

       Both boot drives are Leopard. Also how do I switch between them safely? Is this do-able w/o restarting?  The restart surprised me and I damaged one, maybe more older externals, so I'm gunshy about  moving ahead... Need conceptual and practical help.
       My original boot drive is in pre-fail status (according to OWC software), so I want to use the new ssd rather than risk the old boot drive to back-up everything - system, Time Machine and photos - to a partitioned new 4Tb ext'l drive...  I assume I should be able to do this with the SSD and then retire my orig'l boot dr?... Does this make sense? Many thanks...

      OK, this is good to get cleared up, and helps sharpen my question: What are the  actions that jeapordize external drives in cases like this? I can guess a few: pulling out the firewire/usb etc cable while they are mounted and the computer is on? Or, If they are powered, switching them off or pulling the plug out of the electric outlet  before ejecting?
       There must be others because I didn't do either of these before getting the message that the drive was improperly disconnected and was likely damaged. I did perform "command-option-eject"  just before  getting the above warning message (I actually was told to do that command at the Genius Bar in order to switch boot drives ) but perhaps there was more I was supposed to do but forgot...Can you think of others - why I screwed up so badly? It keaves me so hesitant and worried around this beautiful machine....?
