Galaxy S5 stability and lack of updates

Hi all,
I am running the latest Telstra release of Android v5.0. It is incredibly unstable - the phone randomly reboots a few times a week, apps suddenly close on a daily basis, and Google Play services crash multiple times an hour. Performance is also terrible at times, with long pauses as apps seem to freeze.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Right now the device is practically unusable - certainly not fit for purpose.
Also, I note that there has been no update for the device since the Samsung keyboard vulnerability was announced six weeks ago, and the device isn't listed as having any updates on the roadmap. There are significant releases since v5.0, and x.0 versions are generally buggy to start with, it would be nice to see an update (especially given I only bought the device less than 6 months ago).
With the news this week about pretty much all Android devices running v2.2 or later being vulnerable to the StageFright vulnerability, is it likely that we'll see an update to fix this massive issue any time soon (and with more urgency than shown thus far to patch this device against security vulnerabilities)?

Hi Manaz /Hudrob, Samsung's upgrade protocol generally flows out to address new model upgrades, based on region subject to Telco bloatware add-ins, followed by older model upgrades, based on region subject to Telco bloatware add-ins. The 5.1.1 upgrade will come to Australian S5 models eventually subject to the additional software that Telstra require to be added passing through their testing phase. Historically this sees upgrades occurring ever 6 months. Given that Lollipop 5.0 was released to S5's in June the likely next upgrade for the S5 will occurr in Dec15/Jan16. Lollipop 5.0 is buggy but many of the performance issues are as a result of the OTA overlay. Although it will be painful, I have found that resetting the phone back to Factory defaults and then installing the 5.0 upgrade cleanly will provide a smoother operating (less buggy) experience. Many of the performance issues are caused by the apps, that have also required upgrades to cope with the 5.0 OS, not actually playing nicely. It's similar to issues sometimes experienced with Windows OS upgrades, where Microsoft always recommend installing a clean version of their software instead of upgrading, as this cleans out any residual registry bugs that can interfere with their updated OS. Once again there is not much that can be done other than jailbreaking your phone and installing 5.1.1 from a 3rd party source or waiting for Samsung and Telstra to start their tango, or factory resetting your phone and letting the clean instal iron out the bugs.

  • Nokia 1520 shortcomings and lack of proper support

I have been given a Nokia 1520 as a gift (after i had suggested i liked it). I have owned it for 3 weeks roughly and it's been a total saddening experience. Amongst the countless issues i am meeting are:
    - The infamous oversensitive display issue. Can't type any sms or email straigth without having multiple characters repeated over and over. This also means that while i try to scroll the screen i happen to open unwanted apps or unwanted links in the browser or in newsreaders. Also, trying to select a tile to resize/unpin it, it most often results in opening it countless times before i actually manage to unpin.
    - Lack of a keyboard allowing me to input Traditional Chinese with Pinyin (It was requested in 2011, ie 3 years ago).
    - Timed stroke writing for chinese characters means that if you are too slow (as most westerners writing chinese are) you can't even write characters (maximum timing is 0,8 secs).
    - Lack of any form of quick input like swiping or so. Multiple issues also at downloading languages for the keyboard. A nightmare.
    - The OS won't allow users to select single words or place the cursor in a specific position inside a word. This can be done in some places but not everywhere.
    - Bing Translator honestly sucks and there is a huge shortage of dictionaries and language related resources in the market (nothing comparable to Pleco or Hanping
    - Lack of a decent notification bar and a LED telling people they got mail or messages or calls when the phone is muted. This caused me to lose two important jobs.
    - Very poor/shaky reception for the phone and Internet. Where my Galaxy Note 2 works full broadband, the Nokia connection goes up and down or is none at all.
    - I took the device to Nokia Support Centre in Taipei and the person in charge was a kid who not only didn't know anything about the, now well known, issues of the device but he also got very arrogant, talking carelessly and with a very bad attitude and claiming "people shouldn't buy phones without being able to use them" and "if you tried it before why you complain now?". Tested the phone for 2 seconds and he decided it had no issues, so apparently no chances to have the phone sent for a repair/substitution.
Is this the path Nokia and Microsoft are taking with Windows Phone?
I am so disappointed that i am considering reselling the thing and going back from where i came from, IE Android.
It's a shame Nokia hasn't learned how to treat users yet. I am particularly disappointed at the defective device and at the attitude of the part time, lazy, sleepy teenagers they use in Taipei to cover the service making customers run (or worse since some of those guys really push your patience far above the limits, maybe they don't like foreigners or they are scared at speaking English, whatever it is, it's very uneasy and unpleasant). I have never seen such a bad service for a such a malfunctioning device in my life. I have owned maybe 20 or more devices to date (including old Windows Phones) and never had so many negative experiences piled up all together at the same time
I just wish i had been given a device with some other OS rather than a device with a Beta version of an OS supported by part time staff.

This would appear to be a genuine issue with the 1520. Do not have one so could not comment
    - Yes indeed i can grant you it's genuine. Haven't sent an email in the last 2 weeks. Just too frustrating.
I know there is several Chinese language settings but as I am not Chinese could not comment beyond this is not something Nokia could do anything about as it is a core OS issue and not a hardware/firmware one.
    - Well, it's easy to see if you have doubts. Enter: Settings-Keyboard and go search for any form of input that says "Traditional Chinese with Pinyin (PinYIn is the romanization of chinese characters. You type say "Wo" and the chinese character for "I" pops up amongst other choices. This has been existing from day 1 in any decent keyboard. It has been requested at MS suggestion board 3 years ago. Is still to be implemented. I find it hard to think how they can sell these phones here (especially considering the relations between China and Taiwan and the fact they use simplified/traditional respectively). It's not only a mad marketing move, it's also politically sensitive. No one normal does that here, believe me.
There's several swiping keyboard shortcuts such as typing special characters or numerals (tap hold the 123 key and swipe to the desired character)
    - Sure, then do one thing. Download any swiping keyboard on an Android device and then compare the speed at which you type and amend words. The WP keyboard is primitive. The fact you can't resize it combined with the screen oversensitiveness make it useless. Other Nokias are much much better, but you can't beat a real swipe keyboard, especially if you type as a profession. How can someone use such a keyboard on a device in 2014 is beyond me and and anyone else who has used an Android but even a Blackberry in old times. It's simply inefficient compared to anything else out there. Then we can argue on what we like or not but surely not on its lack of productivity compared to else (whatever else)
As long as the app does not use it's own code anywhere you want to enter text tap and hold to have the cursor appear and swipe to the location wanted.
    - Then do a test. Take an email sent by someone else. Then go to the portion of text he sent you in the REPLY mail you are writing and try to select one of the SENDER's words. You'll see it's impossible. Then move down and try to select a single word of your reply. You'll see it can be done. Different menus pop up based on where you are or which app you are.
Same is TEXT PREDICTION. It works in some places, doesn't in others, even when you'd need it
Never used it, as far as I heard especially since tha latest (recent) update this got a lot better)
You don't. Try to be a foreigner permanently based abroad and the usefulness of these tools (Dictionaries, translators, etc.) will appear immediately, especially when you have to handle or even study characters based on ideograms. Now, Android (Which i insist in saying i don't like due to their philosophy), offers not only a good mobile translating app (including a function where you take a picture then just scroll your finger on the words you want to be translated and translation pops up in a moment) but if you don't like it you can also find a wide choice of tools (Pleco and Hanping being among them and their developers having no intention to expand on WP for now and some not even in the future). In this perspective, what for you is useless or secondary, for people like me (and other expats who do business and work abroad) is a killer application. Google got it. Microsoft and Nokia, it seems, don't.
Never understood the obsession with a notification bar when your apps and services all give up constant updates and notifications on their tiles. I would not want a blinking light on my phone ever. If you are unable to check your phone even once an hour that is really not the phone or OS problem. Don't try and pin your own negligence on the phone that just makes you look silly.
Let's try to be constructive. This OS must not be built based on what you as Blog Admin like or don't like. It has to be built to cater for a wide range of users. Now, you don't like that led because apparently your tiles make you happy. I, don't spend all my day watching tiles. I work too so the phone goes in standby and since it's permanently muted (no ring, no vibration), LED is key to understand when i get emails or sms' or other notifications. I am not asking a multicolour LED as in Samsung devices (which allow you to assign a colour and vibration combination to different accounts so you understand based on colour and vibration what is important and what is not; but at least a basic primitve LED telling people "Hey you got mail or SMS". If it's not a LED, a screen notification waking up the phone from standby would to as well. As far as i know it's not present. It was present in many Android devices as both standard or third party app since the very first basic versions.
So you use a Note2 and 1520 at the same time? this may well have nothing to do with the phone and it won't be the first time it turns out a WiFi router is actually at fault.
So what do you do? Go to Starbucks and tell everyone to stop using the free Wi-Fi because your Nokia 1520 needs a dedicated connection and i threaten to suit Starbucks for not letting the King have the whole bandwidth for itself?
Galaxy works fine. Nokia doesn't, especially when broadband gets weaker (Taipei has Wi-Fi also on Metro wagons and any restaurant or other outlet you may think of). Core point is everyone is there reading their content on their mobiles. I am there trafficking with settings and **bleep**. Ended up using my Galaxy which works fine.
Those are not Nokia owned nor operated stores, go complain to them
Let me explain you a basic of marketing so you understand when it's not the case to defend a brand beyond reasonable limits even when you administer their blog.
If i, as a customer, enter a BLUE SHOP carrying a big, huge, NOKIA brand with all people wearing Nokia shirts i (and the other 23 million users who almost stopped to buy Nokia in Taiwan) assume whoever is running it, is running it on behalf of Nokia (Officially or unoficially doesn't matter as they get the license to sell from Nokia in any case). So, if your licensee works good, people are happy and buy more; if the staff shows signs of laziness, arrogance, treating adults without respect, showing ignorance on device's issues (They didn't even know about the global issue of oversensitiveness or about keyboards...the phone was an alien in their hands), people RUN. And i did RUN.
If you combine the bad support with the fact that the device is actually malfunctioning and lacks a lot of basic functions that in 2014 are given for granted, i beg to think that the only users left once they try the phone for one or two weeks will be some Fans of the brand and a few people who need it to watch movies and take pictures but you don't need a phablet for that. When you sell a bad device and have an as bad support that instead of solving the issue denies it you are turning the market in a self-help environment where users get angered (And you can see how many there are about Lumias and 1520 starting to get on top of the list). So, as much as you and I may stay argue in your blog, i think that if this issue is not solved this OS doesn't have much future.
Finally, a phablet is a sophisticated device where screen size, hardware and software package combine to offer a certain experience that ranges from entertainment to work IN A GLOBAL CONTEXT (Not in your garden, in your living room or when you show off the device to friends to let them see all those useless tiles which you can't even interact with as they open when you want to resize them etc. due to the bad screen). It means the device must be ready and functional in your country or in mine or wherever you live. In this case, Galaxy and their cheap plastic trash got it right with the Note family. Others like HTC and Nokia are lagging behind and 1520 in this respect is not helping people who want to jump from Android to Windows Phone to make that jump.
Test the device simulating the job a professional user doess (typing mails all the time, text messages, interacting with web content, copy/paste, translating and sharing data, sending data to other apps in a snap), then multiply that for 7 days a week and then experience the frustration accumulating day after day. In my case, this is further amplified by the fact that i come from a device that has spoilt me allowing me to do things in a snap.
This phone, as is, is no game!

  • Aaargh! 3000 N200 crippled/dumbed-down BIOS options and lack of VESA modes

    Hi,
I have a Lenovo 3000 N200. The actual hardware is okay for the price (cheapest computer with Penryn CPU and 1680x1050 screen), but the BIOS settings are another matter...
The biggest issue is that Lenovo has disabled the CPU PAE/NX feature in the BIOS and there is no way to enable it. (This has been covered in another thread.) Anyone buying an N200 would have good cause to return it for a refund, since nowhere is it mentioned that this CPU feature is disabled. Luckily 64-bit support is still there, otherwise I'd definitely return mine.
That's not the only problem though. The available settings/options in the BIOS are extremely inadequate. I looked at the v3.03 BIOS update file using a BIOS editor program, and text for all the missing options is in the BIOS image -- these features already exist but Lenovo decided to disable them. Is there any chance Lenovo can enable the missing options in a future BIOS update?
Here are the main annoyances for me:
There should be an option to change the graphics scaling in the BIOS. Non-widescreen modes like 640x400, 640x480 and 800x600 are stretched horizontally to fill the whole screen. I would prefer them to be stretched but keep the original aspect ratio. Once Windows or Linux has booted, you can tell the graphics driver to do that, but that's no help if you're booting to DOS or e.g. a Linux boot CD or Windows installation CD.
There are not enough VESA graphics modes. My N200 with nVidia GeForce Go 7300 graphics has a 1680x1050-pixel screen, but the highest VESA resolution is 1400x1050 (modes 0x347 and 0x348), which always appears stretched. Other nVidia cards seem to use modes 0x368 and 0x369 for 1680x1050.
And here is a run-down of other options which should be user-settable but aren't:
The internal hard disk is always bootable, there's no way to set the BIOS not to boot from it. (You can set its priority lower than the DVD drive, but if there's no bootable disc in there it will always boot from the hard disk.)
The execute disable bit is always disabled, with no way to enable it.
No option to disable the 2nd core of the CPU. (Useful for testing software.)
No option to disable Intel Virtualization Technology. (Useful for testing software.)
No option to enable dynamic CPU frequency mode. (This would be useful in DOS; currently the fan spins all the time there.)
There's an interesting Linux-related option which is not selectable: 'Select IF a Video Repost is to be performed during resume from S3'. Options are 'Disabled: Never', 'perform a Video Repost upon resume from S3', 'Only perform a Video Repost IF the OS is Linux', 'Enabled:  Always perform a Video Repost upon resume from S3'.
No option to choose whether there is an alarm when the battery is low.
No option to select the TV video standard (NTSC/PAL/SECAM).
No option to disable the trackpad.
No option to set the keyboard auto-repeat delay and rate.
No option to disable other hardware like the DVD drive, Ethernet card, WiFi, Bluetooth, or HD audio.
All in all, the disabled no-execute bit and video mode issues with the BIOS have kind of soured my experience with this machine. I wish Lenovo would re-enable the missing features in a BIOS update... sigh.

    Roderic wrote:
Respect and appreciation for highlighting the lack of BIOS features; I have been spending a long time trying to get S Video to work with my PAL tv. Only now found that the black and white result is due to unmodifiable NTSC settings in the BIOS, and now you tell me they cant be changed.
So aye, another hat in the ring for Bios Update Please.
Hmm so was it advertised in the UK as having TV out - if so and it cannot deliver it because it is NTSC only then this is not fit for purpose and you could get money back.
I'm also disappointed in the lack of advanced power management like toshiba have (dim screen and slow down CPU as battery runs down) and lack of dvd acoustic silencer.
And thanks for posting this - saves me the trouble of buying a cable to plug into the tv-out port if it ain't gonna work!

  • Activation and lack of information

Hello. I am a new customer with BT and have signed up for phone line/broadband/TV. I appreciate that this is a customer to customer forum but I am posting to see if anyone has any insight as existing customers as I am now exhausted with talking to the call centres.
Initially I had drafted a post about the issues I have had with BT and OpenReach (lies, lack of updates, no show engineers) but decided that moaning probably wouldn't solve the problem.
Anyway, a friendly OpenReach engineer came out first thing this morning and did everything he needed to do (new faceplate and connection to local BT unit). After he plugged in the BT router he said it was ready to go as the light was blue and I should try to connect a device. He also said it was a good connection and was responding quickly. So, he left quite quickly to go to his next job and I tried to connect my Ipad. The light quickly turned from blue to red on the router and a red "b" started flashing. I turned it off and on again and the same thing happened.
I've looked online and the information is a bit vague but all I can see is that the blinking light means that there is a problem with the connection. So, my question is this - Has anyone else had this problem and is there an actual problem with the connection, or do I have to wait for BT to activate my account hence the red blinking light?
So as not to drip feed, I've logged into the 'My BT' section on the website and I've noticed that the order completion date has changed from the 16th March to the 24th March.
    Thanks

As you can see here http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/36967/~/how-is-bt-infinity-installed-%28engineer-inst... Before leaving, the engineer will reconnect one of your computers so they can demonstrate a working fibre-based broadband connection.
As that didn't happen, I suggest you complain to the helpdesk and demand it gets fixed.

  • Acrobat reader 10.0.x for windows and flash player update

i don't understand why my client require the update of reader (update of 10.0.1), but in the download page (.msp file) i can't find nothing. the other problem was about the update of flash player....i need to distribute the update over GPO, but adobe doesn't release from download page....is because the update are integrated in acrobat reader new release?
the metod is wrong! security is very important and release the updated version of software is also foundamental! IT Pro need an update (.msp or .msi) for the reader and for player.....faster not when you want
so....how you think to resolve this problem? how i can resolve my problem about the update?

Here you'll find the msi and msp files for the Acrobat Reader ("reader" folder on ftp) and Acrobat Pro ("acrobat" folder on ftp). ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/ . Save the link to your bookmarks.
For updating/installing Flash Player you'll have to go over here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/fp_distribution3.html
There's a distribution license needed to deploy the flash player (don't ask my why the hell you'll have to get a license to deploy it in internal environments, although you can download and install it without the license).
Best of luck, i needed a hole day to preparing deployment of cs5.5 and flash player etc. because of lack of information or consistency at the adobe pages and different methods for diffrent products. There should be a way to charge adobe the time it needs to get started, because they earn a damn lot of money with their cs products so they should provide better methods to do these tasks... but thats an endless story, because they're a monopolistic global player i think they aren't really interested in the needs of customers. There's not a real alternative, especially in education you're bound to use it, so you're gonna buy it anyway...

  • Deployed and tried to update to 3.0 - now having SERIOUS issues. HELP!!!

Ok, there's a little bit of a back-story. I'm currently deployed but had 3 days in port and tried to update all of my iPhone/Macbook software in between bar visits. Well, my AT&T SIM card was left on the boat so I didn't have it when I tried to update to 3.0. Upon returning and re-inserting my SIM card my iPhone 3G now stays on the 'slide for emergency' screen with no change nor hope of change. We are no longer in port which means I no longer have access to internet on my personal computer, only work computers with no downloading capabilities due to security issues and painfully slow internet. When I plug in my iPhone, iTunes launches immediately (like always) but then goes to the error pop-up telling me that I need to re-check my network settings and try again. I can click on my iPhone in the side menu in iTunes but NOTHING shows up in the window. Like I said, I cannot access the internet on my personal computer.
I decided to attempt to re-install/revert to my old iTunes and just go back to the way things were and try to update again in the next port - remembering to bring my SIM card with me next time. Well, going into Time Machine and attempting to restore iTunes from my last backup a week ago I get an error pop-up that says 'The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient priveleges for "iTunes"'. I have many various Time Machine backups from the time when my iPhone and Macbook were both working well together but have never had to use Time Machine and am thoroughly unfamiliar with it.
While the iPhone is, obviously, crippled due to lack of network capabilities while deployed, I still use it for my daily calendar, alarm clock, music and movie source at the gym, note-taker and various other network-not-required tools and desperately need it back. Please, anyone, PLEASE help me.

i suspect you will need a network connection to activate the iphone...
...as for the time machine help might want to check in another discussion forum they might be able to help with time machine better in macbook group or macos group or even the !
thanks for your service... hang in there... don't forget your sim next stop!

  • New Front Row, iTunes and Quick Time updater

For user that not aware, there is a new updater for mac which is Front Row 1.3, iTunes 7.0.0 and QuickTime 7.1.3.
For my self, I think the iTunes 7.0.0 is excellent, I found it helpfull to categorize the video and TVshow that I have into a big art image with all the titles next to it instead of showing all as list or as icon in previous iTunes. Not to mention that we can buy a full length dvd movie ($9.99).
I wish the price is the same as songs or regular video ($2.99)...lol
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
Check the link above or use your software updater on your apple menu bar.
    Good Luck and Enjoy.

    The Updates
    A. iTunes
I like the new iTunes a lot, but my major problem is that my music videos (from iTunes store and other sources) are in my music library! When I am typing or on the internet, iTunes is in mini player mode. All of a sudden a video window pops up and starts playing (what else) a video. I don't like that. The music and video mix transfers over to the iPod also. The main reason I don't like it (on the iPod) is because the audio for a video is different than the original song. An example of this is, Don't Speak -by: No doubt.
    B. Front Row
I always liked Front Row and don't really notice any changes to it. It used to be a little slow on the exit, but after the update works like normal again. Therefore, I assume the update for Front Row was for the inner workings of the application. No complaints here.
    C. Quick Time
I don't really use Quick Time. I do most of my video watching in iTunes of Front Row because I don't have to pay Apple to watch stuff full screen with those applications. Although, most of my videos are in Quick Time format because it takes anywhere from two (2) too thirty (30) seconds for Front Row to load Windows Media Video files from my external HD. (I guess that IS a complaint for Front Row, but don't tell him. ^_^)
    D. iPod v. 1.2
Nice! 1) I can adjust the screen brightness (to conserve battery life). 2) Quick scroll thinggy (I lack the technical jargon to describe it). 3) Screen has a little brightness while it's connected to my computer. 'Nuf said.
    E. Summary
I update anything Apple tells me to. But I am having some regrets about iTunes. Nothing that is going to make me uninstall iTunes and reinstall it from a CD (say... the CD that came with my iPod). I have sent a suggestion to Apple, so if you don't like the way things are, I suggest you do the same because posting here will do little to get it fixed. To do it, go to the menu bar while in iTunes and click:
    iTunes>Provide iTunes feedback
It should be something similar in Windows, if any of you guys and gals are reading this. Everything else is fine.

  • Galaxy S Android 2.2 Froyo update begins to trickle out (update: official)

I just read this online at Endgadget.com.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/15/galaxy-s-android-2-2-froyo-update-begins-to-trickle-out/Based on breathless reports we're seeing on Twitter and in the XDA-Developers' forums, it would appear that Samsung has just pushed out the official Android 2.2 Froyo update for its Galaxy S as promised. Our Nordic friends are the first to report seeing the build I9000 JPM update in the latest version of Samsung's Kies PC software. It's early days though, so do let your fellow i9000 owners know how it goes in the comments below. List of changes (including GPS fix) listed after the break.
Update: We've just been handed the official press release for the Andoid 2.2 Galaxy S update. Indeed, Nordic countries get it first (starting mid-October, aka, "now") before it's "gradually rolled out to other European markets, Southeast Asia, the Middle East Asia, North America, Africa and rest of the world." Hey, it takes time to update 5 million handsets.
[Thanks, Gustav F. and Chong Shau Poh]
Android 2.2 JPM for the Galaxy S reportedly adds the following:
    Android 2.2 JIT compiler
    Adobe Flash Player 10.1 compatibility
    New Android Market with auto-updating
    Speed improvements
    Pinch-to-zoom homescreen flyover
    Improved default keyboard
Quick links to "GPS" and "Auto rotation" toggles on notification bar added
Slightly different graphics and transitions with app drawer and default icon dock
    Colored icons in settings
    GPS Fix
    Colored settings icons
    Media Hub
Darker menu theme, navy blue color
    Better Exchange support

No. Frequently the apps take up more storage space on the iPod that the file download size.

  • My nano is stuck in "safe mode" still and will not update.

The original problem:When I was trying to update my nano ipod to 2006-03-23 it ended up going to a black and white screen which said do not disconnect. The updater wouldn't work, it kept saying that the firmware (or whatever the name of the maker is) wouldn't work and that the update had failed. The my nano said it was ok to disconnect. When I did so it came up to the window that has a little folder on it and says check www.apple.com/ipod/support.
So, I followed the five Rs, have reset the ipod, have reinstalled all the software, but now the ipod will not go past the black and white screen. I can load the ipod software but then the updater on the CD that came with my ipod won't work. Sometimes the updater says the ipod needs formatted sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes I'll get a little further in the updater where it will let me "restore" the ipod to its original factory state but then the restoration also fails.
Now the problem: After trying several things from updating my Windows systems to removing spyware and firewalls from my computer, I'm now receiving this message when I try and update my nano: ipod service error. What can I do to get my nano to work? Is there an apple 1 800 number I can call?

    Try these...
iPod shows a folder icon with exclamation point
    iPod Service Error
Firmware Update Failure (If that was the error)

  • Please help, iPhone 5 stuck in recovery mode and will not update.

I tried to update my girlfriend's iPhone 5 (AT&T) from 6.1.2 to 7.0.4 last night and something went wrong so of course I had backed it up so I put the phone into recovery mode and attempted to completely restore it and then restore from back-up (or at least that was my plan) but the problem is that once I got it in recovery mode and started the update it froze mid-update (Not a computer problem, I have a rMBP 2013, 2.3 ghz i7 & 16GB ram) so after about 30 minutes of watching it at the same spot I unplugged it and attempted to start over. Now everytime I attempt to update it it tries to re-download the software and once it gets completely downloaded it says it was corrupted during the download. I have also attempted to download the IPSW manunally and update that way and it now gets partially through the update and throws an error message. I have tried to use tinyumbrella to kick it out of recovery mode and it does not work either. I am out of options, I have no idea what else to do. I aplogize for my ****** grammar and sentence structure I am flustered and haven't taken the time to proofread it.

FIRST, edit your hosts file (which was corrupted by the jailbreak process) and remove any references to gs.apple.com; delete the whole lines and save the file. If you don't know how to do this you will have to get help, and it shows that jailbreaking was a bigger mistake than you thought.
Next, connect to a USB port directly on the computer, not a hub and disconnect all USB devices that consume power or bandwidth (like USB drives).
Put it into DFU mode to restore. With the phone disconnected hold HOME and SLEEP until a black screen appears. Immediately release SLEEP and continue holding HOME. While holding connect to iTunes and continue holding. After a while (perhaps several minutes) iTunes should recognize the phone. When it does release the HOME button and hope for the best.

  • Has anyone encountered drastic shorter battery life both on iphone 5 and ipad since updating to iOS 6.1.2? How can this problem be solved?

    Dear all,
I am new to this community even though I have been a Apple user for years, so please forgive me if this question is not in the right section.
Has anyone encountered drastic shorter battery life both on iphone 5 and ipad since updating to iOS 6.1.2? I've always been happy with these two products until the update - now the battery life is considerably shorter which is extremely frustrating.
How can this problem be solved? Is there any way to go back to the previous version?
    Thanks for your help.

If you update using iTunes the phone is first wiped clean, then the new OS is installed, and finally the backup is restored. After this finishes if you sync your music should be restored. Music is not in the backup, because it is already on your computer and duplicating it would use up a lot of hard disk space.
An OTA update just patches what has changed; it does not disturb content.

  • Adobe Reader and Acrobat Pro updates for 11.0.10 being pushed out through SolarWinds Patch Manager are not being recognized as applicable.

I am trying to update our Adobe Reader and Acrobat Pro to 11.0.10 using the default MSP packages with SolarWinds Patch Manager.  All of the systems keep reporting as 'NOT APPLICABLE'.  All of the workstations have Reader11.0.09, with about 10% still on 11.0.08 (due to the fact that the reader 11.0.09 package only patched about 2/3 of the systems).  All systems that have Acrobat Pro are 11.0.09.
In SolarWinds I am using the "Adobe Systems, Inc. Packages" node.
    Adobe Systems Acrobat 11 Catalog
    Adobe Systems Reader 11 Catalog
and the SW Patch Manager downloads the msp's straight from Adobe.
I have checked the msp's manually and they will update at least back to 11.0.07 in Reader, and 11.0.0 in Acrobat Pro. (I had an old stand alone system that still had Reader 11.0.07, and I did a new install of Pro and went straight to update 11.0.10)
The SolarWinds Tech said, "Okay. That content is produced by Adobe. Any questions concerning applicability logic or diagnosing why a package reports as NotApplicable when that's not expected would need to be directed to Adobe, as they are solely responsible for that content and its behavior".
I am new to SolarWinds Patch Manager, and any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you are attempting to use the SCUP catalogs outside of the MS solution.  I can almost guarantee you that Adobe didn't test it if it's not referenced in the ETK:  11   SCCM-SCUP — Enterprise Administration Guide
That being said there "should" be logging available in any deployment solution.   Since I am not familiar with Solar-Winds particular solution I can't say if it logs errors and how verbose those logs might be.    If you have logs then post the output and the forum members "might" be able to assist you.

  • I changed my AppleID a long time ago to an email that I no longer use and I have updates for apps that I can't update because my old email is filled in to where i sign in and it wont let me change it to my new one???

I changed my AppleID a long time ago to an email that I no longer use and I have updates for apps that I can't update because my old email is filled in to where i sign in and it wont let me change it to my new one???

The problem with those two apps is that they are supposed to be in your Apple ID and you didn't set up the Mac properly/completely when you got it.
You might try deleteing them and using OS X Recovery to install them again.
    OS X Recovery -

After that, before you open any iLife apps go to your Mac App Store account, to the Purchased pane and Accept them into your account.
