Garbled web pages

I've been using Dreamweaver 4 for years with no problem, maintaining 5 or 6 websites all on different servers.  Now all of a sudden when I "put" a page and browse to it online, it comes out all garbled.  Here are a couple of examples:
http://www.earlham.edu/~jeffesu/TRIM-CourseObjectives-test.htm
http://www.earlham.edu/~jeffesu/QB-FinalEssays.htm
I've tried "putting" several pages on this server, and a couple on another server; the problem seems like it must be in DW4's ftp setup somehow, or in Windows -- but how??   The pages look fine when I open in them in IExplorer or FireFox from my hard drive - and they look fine when I display them in DW's wsiwyg mode -- it's just when I've posted them and get to them via the internet that they're all garbagey.  My other pages on the same server, that I haven't "put" in last day or two, all appear fine online.
I had several problems with my computer over the past couple of weeks, but they seem all resolved now, until this happened (browsing redirect virus; and I had to re-load my usb and PCMCIA drivers).  I just used DW less than a week ago to post some web page revisions, and it worked fine.  Since that success and the current failures, the only thing I can think of that's changed is that I had to re-load the software for my wireless PC card (Sprint Smartview) but the Sprint tech folks swear up and down that that can't be the problem.  I don't have access to another internet connection.
I have no trouble at all making my webpages in DW, and ftp appears to be working just fine.  The html or jpg or whatever transfers and appears in the list on the server side as expected, but when I type in its url (or click re-load if I already had the page up in a browser window) it's trash like the examples above.
I'm hoping there's just some simple setting I need to change....  maybe something to do with encryption?  It sure looks like somehow my perfectly nice html is getting seriously shuffled on its way to the server.  I'm running Windows XP Pro / Tablet Edition.
Help?  Anyone?  Thanks!!!

So I added this statement to the front of several of my test pages, and now they seem to display properly:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
I have no recollection of what the content of this DOCTYPE statement even means, but I found it at the front of some of my other pages, so figured it was at least a good starting point.  I learned HTML in about 2002 or 3, and have never upgraded my skills in the least....!
At any rate, I wanted to take down the test pages from my previous post, but I thought I'd put up a little test page just to illustrate the issue.  So I made this page:
http://www.earlham.edu/~jeffesu/TestPageShowingGarble.htm
It has no DOCTYPE declaration, and I thought it would display as garble but it's fine.
In fact, I can't even duplicate the problem any more.    Here's a screen shot of one of the formerly defective pages, for illustration purposes:
http://www.earlham.edu/~jeffesu/GarbledWebPage.jpg
but now it seems like all the pages I post display just fine, with or without a DOCTYPE declaration.
I'm out of time this morning; will test more later today or tomorrow morning, Lord willing.
I'm going to leave the "no, my question has not been answered yet" checked, since I don't have time to test everything right now, but it sure looks like I'm on the road to recovery so to speak.  Mystified, but getting better.  Similar to the rest of my life, come to think of it :-)
Thanks so much for your help with this -- all o' y'all, who read and post and try to help --  I'd have long since had to abandon computing altogether, were it not for 24-7 user support forums like this one.

  • Garbled fonts on certain web pages

    On certain web pages, particularly xckd.com, tvtropes.org, and many MediaWiki sites, certain fonts (mostly Lucida Grande and Arial, usually when bolded) don't render properly, replacing characters with spaces, boxes, or occasionally dollar signs. Whatever's causing it seems to have something to do with stylesheets, since if I shut stylesheets off, it works fine. There's no evidence of corrupted fonts, it doesn't do the same thing on Firefox, and if I try to use one of the community Webkit builds I see no difference at all.
    Thoughts? (I can post screenshots if necessary, though I'm not entirely sure how...)

    Hi OffSeason,
    There's a lot of undefined font calls in the CSS files you link to. xkcd simply calls for "Lucida", which is not a valid font call. A font name must be the entire name for it to work correctly. A poor choice actually since generally, only Mac users have "Lucida Grande". There are a lot of different Lucida typefaces, but I assume you're expecting OS X's Lucida Grande.
    It's better to call multiple fonts to cover both Macs and PCs. For instance, in my font article, the body font is called as font-family: "Lucida Grande", Arial. What this does is tell the browser to use Lucida Grande first if it's available. If not, use Arial instead.
    Anyway, since no valid font is called, your browser is supposed to use whatever is set as the default sans serif font in your browser preferences. Which in Safari, is Courier. Though if I cut and paste random lines of text out of either page you link to and paste it into TextEdit, they all come up as Helvetica.
    That again is due to the web designer's lack of defining a font. The main.css for tvtropes properly calls for "ComicSansMS" where they want that to show up (though it isn't used anywhere on the main page), but that is followed by the substitution of just "sans-serif". That's nothing, which is why my browser is using Helvetica, a sans serif font. If they want the visitor to see a specific sans serif font, they must call it out by name. Many of the CSS font calls are simply for "sans serif", which leaves it up to your browser to essentially use something at random.

  • How can I get a Japanese flash web page to display 100% correctly?

    I've tried everything I can think of but I can't get some of this web site's font to display correctly. Some of the flash shows in the correct, Japanese, characters, but some of it shows as code. If I log in as a different user, and set that user's International Language preferences to Japanese, the web page displays correctly. But, when I change users, and go back to the English user, the page displays in a mix of Japanese and messed-up code.
    Here is the page: http://weathernews.jp/livecam/
    If I click onto a different page of that website, http://weathernews.jp/map/
    the writing appears as Japanese in the box, at the bottom of the map.
    But, if you click on that map, and zoom in 3-times, to the city level, the font in the box under the hourly weather and weekly weather appears as code, and not Japanese.
    I'm guessing that it is a problem with the computer booting-up as being English or Japanese, and the browser, then not being able to detect which version of flash to run, the Japanese or English version, cannot display the font correctly.
    Why does it happen only on some pages and not all of the pages on that site?
    Can it be fixed?
    If so, how?
    Thanks!

    Yeah, I tried Opera and Firefox, but I get the same garbled text. The only thing that makes that page open and display correctly is switching to a different user, and making that user's main language Japanese, in the international settings.
    Of course none of this is all that important, I mean, it's about viewing a weather page, but I am just curious why some of the Flash is read or written so that an English language set user can see some of it displayed correctly, but not all of it, where as a user set to Japanese language settings can get all pages correctly.
    I know it has to do with how the Flash Macromedia sees the main language setting for the computer, but what I don't get, is how come a user using Japanese as the main language can read English and Japanese Flash pages (pages with English commanded Java come up correctly), but using English as the main language only allows me to view Flash pages written using English commands. Can I change my Flash program to read Japanese pages, without changing my computers main language to Japanese? Or am I stuck with a Flash program that must match the main language the user is using?

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.1.3 will not convert web page to Pdf

    While using Acrobat 9.1.3 Pro, I cannot convert web pages to PDF format.
    the output is garbled and text is cyrillic or backwards.
    Using Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.13

    You do not have all the fonts embedded, but the basic document looks fine. There is an issue withe the printer setup in your browser that is leading to part of the page running off the paper - but that is a browser issue and not Acrobat. In some cases, a simple fix is to print as landscape.

  • Problem creating a PDF from the "print view" of a web page

    When creating a PDF from the "print view" of a web page, the features in the print dialog box overlap. When the PDF is created, the words are garbled. e.g. words apppear as jzhhhxxf or zxihcj.

    Use a job settings that embeds the fonts. If you look at the PDF, the font properties probably do not look correct and don't include embedded fonts. Also, set the printer to Adobe PDF before you try to do a print, so that the web page can try to properly adjust to the printer.
    Why not just try opening the web site directly in Acrobat?

    There were problems with IE9 on it's initial release and that may be what you are seeing if that is the browser (you did not indicate the browser and that may be a key). If you have a different browser you might try that one with the same pages to see if it browser related.
    By saying garbled it sounds like the fonts did not make it or you have selected "Use Local Fonts" in Acrobat. Try checking the latter first. Then check if the fonts are embedded in the PDF by checking the document properties (ctrl-D). If they are not, go back to the browser and select the press or print job options before printing and see if they get embedded and if your problem is resolved.

  • Why do empty boxes show up instead of text on many web pages?

    Several months ago we started having trouble on our Mac OS X desktop computer with Firefox. On many web pages, including the Firefox Support home page, I see empty boxes instead of text. The boxes do not have any letters in them. If I copy and paste the boxes into MS Word it translates them into text, but not on the web page.

  • Safari not displaying web pages correctly

    I dont know if its my inexperieince, something to do with settings or what but I am finding some of the web pages I am receiveing are not displaying correctly.  For example a card company sent me an online form to complete but when I tried to read it some of the information was displayed on top of more information making the whole thing garbled and indeciperable, on another website there was an area with a list of information held in a box but when I tried to read the information it would periodically jump about yet I was no where near the mouse. Both pages are fine on my husbands windows PC. There have been other incidents like this making the transition from windows to Mac very painful.  Is this something that can be remedied or are we stuck with it?

    When I experience the problem, I sometimes have to zoom in or out, to get the text to be readable.

    Hello,
    I've recently upgraded to iLife 08 and have just rebuilt my showreel using iDVD. When I click to see one of the films as it goes through the transition from menu to the flm I can see what appears to be broken up web page. I can't figure it out, can anyone help?

    I have used iWeb (version 3.0.4.) for many years for several web sites, including lifecourse.org.
    No, you haven't :
    <meta name="Generator" content="iWeb 2.0.4" />
    And looking at the code, it's already garbled in the source of the page. No need to set the server straight.
    Try a different encoding (instead of Default) in Cyberduck :

  • Excel workbook saved as web-page - In IE it displays correctly (eg all non-hidden columns) - In Firefox it displays what I expect, plus the first of what should be a series of hidden columns

    I saved an Excel workboob as a web-page - In IE 8 it displays exactly as I want (that is all visible, non-hidden columns) - In Firefox 10 it displays the same, ''plus'' the ''first'' of what should be a series of'' hidden columns'' - Why would Firefox see a hidden column which IE doesn't - I'm working on XP (fully up-to-date with all patches applied)

    Thanks fmdeveloper as a result of you confirming that it is an FF bug I delved deeper into it and I've now found a fix as follows:-
    1) Unhide Excel columns, format cells to ;;;
    2) From first re-formatted col to rightmost end of all cols select & hide
    When saved as web page this then displays in FireFox as it does in IE
    NB: After re-formatting previously hidden cols it is necessary to hide '''all''' the remaining cols or there will be a display of blank cols in FF where garbled 'hidden entries' were seen previously

  • MS Word Special characters in web pages

    I am running into an issue when I paste text from MS Word documents into web pages (JSP) forms.
    Characters like dashes paste. Then the form is submitted and when later retrieved and prepopulated from the DB, they come out garbled.
    The database accepts UTF-8 encoding, and I changed the charset on the JSP's to use UTF-8 encoding, but none of this helped.
    Could anyone suggest where else can I look for the problem?
    Thanks.

    Thanks,
    I am reading your article and attempting to implement the changes...
    I am trying to understand something - my system is Vista, whose default encoding is Cp1252. Must I change it to UTF-8 as well, or is it sufficient to force UTF-8 in my application?

  • Open web pages from an applet

    I'm developing an applet that has to open some web pages.
    The only way I know is to use the method showDocument that
    needs and URL. So, how to pass parameters to the web page?
    I don't want to put them in the URL: everyone can see
    "secret data"!
    Help me, please.

    Take a look at this example that uses a JEditor pane to hold the HTML page.
    //Create a new JEditor Pane
    jep = new JEditorPane( );
    //Ensure the pane is not editable
    jep.setEditable(false);
    //Use this to get local HTML file
    URL fileURL = this.getClass().getResource("Manual/Manual.htm");
    //add the html page to the JEditorPane
    jep.setPage(fileURL);Ok the core line of code here is this.
    URL fileURL = this.getClass().getResource("Manual/Manual.htm");The standard method for accessing a html file via a URL is thus. As you can see its very similar.
    URL fileURL = new URL("http://www.comp.glam.ac.uk/pages/staff/asscott/progranimate/docs/Manual/Manual.htm");this.getClass().getResourse() will return the file location of the class you are working with.
    By doing the following you can access manual.html in a folder called Manual that sits in the same file location as the class file you are using.
    URL fileURL = this.getClass().getResource("Manual/Manual.htm");I hope this helps.
    Andrew.
