Generate IP/Ethernet Traffic

Hi Everyone,
I am doing a network simulation which involves sending ip traffic from two end clients, the traffic go throuth the router in between.
I have done the signaling work between them that set up the connection sockets ,now the work is sending real ip traffic.
I am newbie on this area. I hope you guys can help me tell me how to Generate IP traffic with specified characteristics (like Video, audio, http traffic-best effort traffic) and if possible, how to measure the delay or other performance parameters ?
Actually ..I think it is not necessary to use Java to generate ip/ethernet traffic...do you guys have any other ideas?
Thx beforehand

  • GetURL generating "no network traffic"

i don't have the code in front of me so can't quote from it
i'm afraid, but as a general picture:
we have a pop up browser window generated by the
    FCK editor within which 2
iframes inside of which either <object> & <embed>
    tags or geoff sterns
    swfobject include
(the result with either embed method is the same) and a swf. said
    swf then has this code:
    getURL( destination, "", "POST" );
the problem is, i'm told by my java guys, this call is
    generating ZERO network traffic.
    any ideas why?

never forget your window declaration. here we have before and
    after:
    getURL( destination, "", "POST" );
    getURL( destination, "_self", "POST" );
the second one works. oddly, the first WAS working, firstly
for years using a previous rich text editor and then even now with
our latest rich text editor on our test environment, only not on
our live environment. and the java guys are glad to see it working
but still wonder quite what the problem is because as far as they
can tell everything is similarly named on test as on live.
i don't know, all i know is that using "_self" made a world
of difference and i recommend it 100%. it's great!!! :)

  • Generates more network traffic automatically

    Hi All,
iMac computer generates more network traffic automatically. This creates problem in slow down of network and system slowness.
Please let me know solution for this.

How do you know this is happening?

  • IPhone 4s 'Find My iPhone' generates 50MB/day traffic

New 4S activated 5 DEC 2011. Generated more than 500 MB of submitted traffic first 10 days until I turned off the 'Find My iPhone' service. Could be one or all of the Location Services that is not working. Battery life has been heavily influenced as well since the 4S has been 'in active use' approx 97% of the time (due to the continued location service activity). Battery power dropped by 15% an hour. Anyone that has experienced the same error?

It's gone. You will never see it again.
    Move on.

  • IMac Loses all ethernet traffic

A iMac 3 Ghz intel iMac is lossing all network communication with the ethernet port.
    Every 20 minutes off so.
    i did :
    - applyed 10.5.8 Combo Update
    - reset PRAM
    - trashed all network plist files
    - tryed new account
    - check disk
    -repair permissions
Trashing plist file solved the problem for half a day ....
What to do next ... ? New System .. ?

  • What generates so much traffic with NAS?

So I have a NAS server in my LAN, and a few iPhones and iPads.
I use my NAS over smb, the NAS stands for only downloading to it, so its a big drive with loads of files.
Sometimes I try to play HD movies from it, streaming them but they get laggy. When I turn off the movie, I close the whole player, I check activity monitor and I see something is trying to load data from the NAS. I would like to check what it is, because in very peak times when I would like to stream movies and stuff it gets in and doesnt let me watch the movies. The nas supports 8MB/s maximum data transfer on the network, so it would be enough for a HD stream. When this thing doesnt gets in, the movies play flawlessly.
I connected via ethernet, wifi is turned off.
The nas is attached via ethernet aswell.
    Mountain Lion latest version.
    MBP 17 late 2011
MDS is turned off and totally unloaded from the system, so it cannot be spotlight checking file sizes.
I couldnt upload the image here so I have attached it in cloudme.
    http://cl.ly/NTGU
I am attaching a screenshot of my activity monitor where you can see all the processes and maybe give me a more helpful information.
Please dont hasitate to ask me any questions.

There's no easy way to monitor network usage per process using built-in tools. If you're an advanced user and you want to try, see the manual page for the nettop(1) shell command. It may not be able to provide the information you're looking for.
The third-party products Rubbernet and Little Snitch are supposed to record network usage by processes. I can't vouch for them. Both were available as free trials, the last time I checked. I suggest you uninstall either one when the question has been answered.

  • Something on my computer is generating heavy internet traffic

    hi there,
    I need expert help!
two or three months in a row now I exceeded my monthly internet limit, which did not make any sense at all. finally I took a closer look at my computer and here's what I found out: moments after my machine starts up, and even without starting any app whatsoever, my computer starts downloading large amounts of data, probably to the tune of at least 1GB / 24hrs. it also uploads some, but far far less than it downloads. my MacBook Pro, also on 10.6, isn't doing it. when I boot my Mac Pro into newly installed 10.8, no problems there. it's also not doing it right now, but I booted 10.6 in safe mode.
how can I find out what it is, and kill it?

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo lsof -i
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The output of the command shows what processes are accessing the network. That may help you to solve the mystery.

  • Question about wireless ethernet traffic

Im sniffing wireless packets and seeing something I don't understand and cannot find relevant documentation on....
In the 802.11 wireless lan management frame, tagged parameters section I am seeing a Tag number 133 which is listed as a reserved tag number, with a value that LOOKS like an SSID. But is not in fact the ssid, as broadcast-ssid is not enabled on this AP and the SSID tag field length is shorter than this piece of data.
    Can anyone help me
    1. decipher the meaning of tagged paremeter 133
    2. point me in the direction of documentation that will break out each tagged parameter and its meaning and values?
    Thx!

  • Traffic Generating using Smartbits

How to make SmartBits 6000C generate Ethernet traffic from LabView?
I have a DLL for SmartBits and I'm able to connect it.
    Could someone advise something?

    Ludmilla wrote:
There is explanation on how to Control an Instrument. The function HTGetStructure is mainly used there. As far as I understand I have to use similar approach using function HTSetStructure (in order to set up transmit parameters) isn't it?
You will need to review the documentation for the SmartBits dll in order to determine which functions you will need to use.

  • Generating traffic report of a tablespace or schema

    Hello together,
at an Oracle 11gR2 (11.2.0.3.0) Enterprise Edition (fully licensed) with RHEL 6 as OS I'm trying to generate a statistic, that shows me a weekly or monthly report over the traffic on a tablespace or a schema.
Until now, I've worked with the HIST_VIEW dba_hist_tbspc_space_usage (I mean there is also one nearly called so for schema), but that view show me only the grow of a tablespace in a timeline of 1 week. But that would not be the hole traffic. Because SELECT statements will nothing do on the grow of the tablespace but it generates traffic.
In that case it wouldn't be so important, if it is more tablespace or schema sided because at this database each tablespace has it's own schema and timeline would be nice if it is weekly or monthly.
Does somebody of you know a way to generate such a report? I know I could do with some tcp_dump, but i would also see if there is also any Oracle database way.
    Thanks and regards,
    David

    Thanks for your answer Justin!
That is what i meant with fully licensed. Performance and tuning pack is on board.
Directly, I can try the view tomorrow, I'm not at work right now.
But it sounded not like that what I'm searching for. Normally traffic should be something in MB or GB I think.
Better would be to describe, for whgat I need that: my company want's to "outsource" our dedicated server to an IAAS provider. To calculate the cost they need informatioin about:
    The complete size of DB
Size of each schema / tablespace
And the traffic, because traffic generate extra cost
Traffic in this case doesn't mean only the shrink and grow of a schema or a tablespace (insert, update, delete) it also means the read out of data in the database by select or merge or something like that.
So the shrink and grow I'm able to calculate them by dba_hist_tbspc_space_usage by getting the size of a tablespace each hour and make an addition of the changes of the size. But here I can't see the traffic that is generating by everything else? And you mean, that can I do with DBA_HIST_SEG_STAT?

  • Need help in generating L4 Traffic monitor logs

    Hi,
As a part of my project I need to study different types of logs produced by Cisco IronPort. I could generate some access and authentication logs however not sure about generating the L4 Traffic Monitor logs. Can anyone point me to right documentation that will help me generate those logs?
    Thanks,
    Harshad Kashikar

    Harshad,
L4 Traffic Monitoring needs to be configured within the IronPort - first question is do you have a SPAN/TAP port set up on your switch to capture L4 traffic?
Second, I only use this feature to capture information on malware/spyware - I have seen P2P, IRC, and 'phone-home' traffic amongst other things.  Do you have an infected host you can monitor?

  • How to generate specific traffic types for testing?

    Hi all.
Is there a good tool or tools (Windows-based) for generating and testing traffic through specific ports to a remote host?  I know what I am asking for but not sure how to put it into the right words, so here' s an example.  Normally in a situation where if I set up a router with some NAT and a zone firewall, and want to test whether the outside world can get to a web server internally, I would attach a real web server to the inside interface, set up the rules and policies to reach it, and then test from a laptop or PC attached in some way to the outside (Internet) inteface.
But I don't always have a web server to plug in, and this says nothing about other protocols I'd want to test.  For example ntp protocol on udp 123.
So ideally I would take two laptops and install the testing tool on each, plug one into the LAN and the other to the outside thus simuluating some random Internet host, and then they can talk to each other over any port or protocol they allow for and show the results.
Not sure why I can't seem to articulate this very well today but I hope I'm getting the idea across.  I'm not looking for a port scanner or something but rather a tool for testing end-to-end success of communication between two systems over an intermediiary device (router), over certain ports or protocols.
    Thank you!

I looked over quite a few in there, would still need to download and test.  Seems there are a lot of home grown tools by university engineers out there
Unfortunately iperf isn't Windows-based which is what I need for this scenario but it does look very intreesting in itself.
I did find that nmap has nping which employs an echo responder so hopefully it can do more than just icmp.  Nonetheless that whole list has very interesting tools which I'll review in more detail when time permits.
    Thank you!

  • Why does deleting bookmarks content generate Internet traffic

Deleting the content of Bookmarks generates outgoing Internet traffic, verified by Kaspersky Internet Security and a traffic monitor.
It appears that Firefox not only keeps a html copy of Bookmarks content in the Profile but store a copy some place out there on the Internet. If this is so surely that is an invasion of privacy.
    Anyone know nore on this?

All versions of Firefox by default will try to connect to the internet, for details see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Firefox+makes+unrequested+connections

  • Connecting Airport Extreme N to Time Capsule via ethernet to extend wireles

Hi, I currently have 2 Airport Extreme N and a Time capsule and would like to connect all three together. I am planning to use the time Capsule as the router and then use the other airport extreme to extend the wireless network. I am planning to have ethernet connection between the three devices ie Airport extreme N (A) is connected to time capsule via ethernet and airport extreme N (B) is connected to time capsule via another ethernet.
I have tried the Extend Wireless network option to connect them, but that seems to generate so much traffic between the airport extreme N and the time capsule that the network is not usable. I have also tried using WDS but that didn't seem to work.
The three wireless networks have some areas of overlap but the signal is weak which is why i prefer to link them up with ethernet.
What is the best wall to configure them? should I set them up so that they're each creating a wireless network but with the same name? Or is there a better solution? Thanks!

It seems to me the easiest way is to have the Airport Extreme connect to internet using Ethernet, using DHCP and the Connection sharing in off (bridge mode) and then create a new wireless network with the same name... Is that correct? I have previously ran the apple wizard and it did something weird with the network and then both the time capsule and the airport extreme are serving out IP address and both of them have the same IP address 10.0.1.1. which then messes up everything...
    Any ideas? thanks!

  • How to change gateway in windows 7 from ethernet to usb 4g modem?

We have a Windows 7 machine that is connected to internet by satelite through ethernet. This workstation also has a USB 4G modem that should be used by a software application. We would like to have all network functionality to go through normal ethernet
traffic and just 1 software application to use the USB 4G modem. How can we set this so we don't have to disconnect everytime from ethernet when we would like to use the 4G connection by the USB Dongle/Modem??

    Hi GadgetServer,
If my understanding is right, you want to use USB 4G modem for one software and other network traffic goes by normal Ethernet.
I think we could add route table if you know the detonation address that the application will visit.
For more information about adding route table, please refer to the following article.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490991.aspx
Additionally, we could contact the software publisher to see if there are options to choose the USB 4G modem.
