Get Text with Applied Style

Hi all,
I am using InDesign CS3 on OS 10.5. I'm trying to write something in Applescript that can look at a document and give me the text that has a certain applied style.
For example, if a document contained the text "Hello, world" and had an applied paragraph style called "Greeting," then what I want is to use my script to tell that document something like this:
tell application "Adobe Indesign CS3"
set theDoc to document 1
set theText to get every paragraph of theDoc whose applied paragraph style is "Greeting"
end tell
theText
-->should return: "Hello, world"
Obviously, I tried that script, but it doesn't work. I get the error "Adobe InDesign CS3 got an error: Cant get every paragraph of document "MyDocument.indd" whose applied paragraph style = "Greeting"."
I'm not sure if I am just using the wrong commands or what. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Hayden,
The trouble is, theDoc doesn't have paragraphs. If you open the InDesign dictionary and look at the document object, you'll see text frames, and you'll see stories, but no paragraphs. To get all of the paragraphs, you'd use something like this:
set theText to every paragraph of every story
But getting every paragraph of every story whose applied paragraph style is a specific style is harder to do using a filter ("whose") clause, because it has multiple conditions. Shane can probably do it, but I'm not having much luck. All the same, why bother? InDesign has a perfectly good find text method that will do what you want. Something like this:
tell application "Adobe InDesign CS3"
--Clear the find text preferences
set find text preferences to nothing
set applied paragraph style of find text preferences to paragraph style "Greeting" of document 1
tell document 1
set myFoundItems to find text
end tell
end tell
Thanks,
Ole

  • Pretagging text with ID styles without using XML tags

    I just wanna pretag some text with ID styles, such that when I place the text, it joins the layout already formatted.
    But how? Can I do this without drinking from the XML cup?

    Many thanks for your reply.<br /><br />When I export tagged copy (either verbose or abbreviated methods), the resulting text document is complex -- all kinds of coding. Yet, when placed back into ID, it appears correctly formatted.<br /><br />But my attempts to pretag new text with, say, <ParaStyle:New subsubcat> (one of the exported tags), brings in the tag itself, not correctly formatted new text. • [AS][CS3] Finding text with character style

    Please help to tell me how to find text with a specific character style and then delete the text.
    I had no problem doing this with CS2 but its doing my head in now.
    Thanks,

    Here you go. This assumes that your character style is at the top level of the panel. If you're using style groups, you'll need to write code to get at the style you want to use.
    //DESCRIPTION: Delete text in named character style
    (function() {
      if (app.documents.length > 0) {
        deleteStyledText(app.documents[0]);
      function deleteStyledText(aDoc) {
        var cStyle = aDoc.characterStyles.item("CharStyleName");
        setupFindText();
        app.findTextPreferences.appliedCharacterStyle = cStyle;
        aDoc.changeText();
      function setupFindText(find, change, wholeWd, caseSense, foots, hidLayers, lockedLayers, lockedStories, masters) {
        app.findTextPreferences = null;
        app.changeTextPreferences = null;
        try { app.findTextPreferences.findWhat = find } catch(e) {};
        try {app.changeTextPreferences.changeTo = change } catch(e) {};
        app.findChangeTextOptions.properties = {
          caseSensitive:(caseSense == null ? false : caseSense),
          wholeWord:(wholeWd == null ? false : wholeWd),
          includeFootnotes:(foots == null ? false : foots),

  • BUG: Saving Text with Layer Styles to PDF

    I was just able to take the CS6 beta for another test run, and it seems the following ancient, but high-priority bug (at least for me) hasn't been addressed:
    When saving large Photoshop documents (composites in resolutions like, say 7000x10000 pixels) to Photoshop PDF, certain layer styles are often not exported correctly when applied to text layers. The layer styles that are affected are those that render pixels that are then clipped inside the text, such as Gradient Overlay, Bevel & Emboss etc.
    When output, they usually don't span the entire text in the PDF, but are cut off with a straight line at some point (I can't supply an example image right now, my apologies). Inside of Photoshop, they render correctly at all zoom levels. My guess is that this is somehow related to the raster data being written as individual tiles and for some reason, some of these are then omitted for layer styles.
    The problem isn't new to the CS6 Beta, but has existed for many versions. I have run into it in both Mac and Windows versions. The current workaround is to always expand layer styles on the text layers that are affected into layers before exporting, which is tedious and error-prone since there is inevitably something that gets missed (EDIT: I was wrong there, that workaraound doesn't work, the problem persists even if the layer style is expanded into a layer that is then applied as a clipping group).

    Two possibilities: Pre-compose everything and fade the comp or use a second layer that has the layer styles, but in its Blending Options for the layer styles has set Fill opacity to zero, so only the styles are rendered, but not the source. Whjat you are seeing is normal behavior based on how styles are supposed to work. Whenever there is a non-zero (non-transparent) pixel, the get applied, where the pixels opacity acts as amultiplier for the style's intensity. Looks good for some, but often causes this popping appearance...

  • Export/import text with all styles (indesign CS3 (XP SP2))

    I'm looking for the best way to export text so authors can edit their text using MS Word, Excel or xml. (they don't want to use Indesign). after they are done editting I want to import the text back into Indesign (with par, char, obj styles).
    I know how to import/export to .doc with styles, but this doesn't work for table, object styles, and page breaks.
    Xml tags or plugin/software might be a solution.
    I've searched the forums, google and read the help file, but still don't know what the best/quickest solution might be. ... ?
    thanks in advance

    1. Those programs don't support every feaature of InDesign, so you are out of luck.
    2. If they don't want to use InDesign, ask them to use InCopy, that is the only one programm which supports the whole InDesgin-functionlity
    3. Page breaks should never be done manually, never in Word, neither with InDesign. They should be created via paragraph styles in both program, but with the import options is a checker to get Word's page breaks.

  • JTextPane, Selecting Text and Applying Styles

    Hello,
    Anyone encounter this situation? I have a mini word processor application that I have written using the RTFEditor kit and a JTextPane. To change style, e.g bold, font size, font face, etc, one can select text and then click a button or select a menu item. That part works fine. The styles are primarily changed by using the Action classes provided in the javax.swing.text.* package.
    The problem is, that if a user selected text of more than one style, all of the text is automatically converted to the style of the first part of the text selected, without the user even eanting to change ANY style just yet.
    If anyone knows why this might be happening I would surely appreciate it.
    Thanks,

  • Formatting incoming text with style sheets

    Is there a way to "find/change" formatted text with existing style sheets?<br /><br />In other words I have formatted text placed into my indesign document that looks like the following: <bf>Four Patch</bf> Then another set of text that looks like this:<it> Baltimore Press</it> <br /><br />I set up stles sheets formatted for Bold font and Ital font to accomodate these formats. Problem is I have a 500 page book that I need to go through and stylize. I tried to do a find/change global (<bf> </bf> to bold font etc but it didn't work. I was hoping by just putting a space between the <> would  help the find/change option to find all the text but kept saying could find.<br /><br />I hope someone understands what I'm trying to do and can tell me that there is a remedy to the tedious formatting issue I have.<br /><br />Thanks<br /><br />MAria<br />Stuart, Florida

    If you have InDesign CS3, I can think of two ways to deal with this.
    Grep search: set search to
    <bf>([^<]+)</bf>
    and replacement string to
    $1
    and then set the change format to your boldface style. Change all. (I often think it's a good idea to take a copy before doing Change All on a 500-page document, but that's up to you.) Repeat with hopefully obvious changes for the italics. You can save the searches if you need to do this often.
    Adventurous alternative.
    Put the single line
    <stuff>
    at the top of your file, and
    </stuff>
    at the bottom.
    Now it's XML. So open the structure panel, import XML from the fly-out menu. Map Tags to Styles from the same menu, and set up the correspondence you need. Then drag the stuff node from the structure panel to the document.
    If you have to do this more than once, you can import the mapping from an old file each time after the first.
    IMPORTANT: The XML route will fail if you have loose & or less than characters in your file. You would have to replace these with the appropriate character entity references.
    (If you aren't reading this on the forum site, you may be seeing character entity references in the message. Hopefully you can decode them.)

  • Writing Style check with Grep styles

    Here is an idea.
    I make dozens of differents books and journals, and each one has its own editorial pecularities -- some want their quotes double, others single, some want "e-mail" while others insist on "email", or no specific text before an email address. Lots of little things, and I always list as much as possible on the pasteboard -- but of course I have to check these items myself.
    Would it be useful if the user was able to put these "rules" in the GREP Style manner into your document (or template!), where it would not mark the found text with a style, but rather with a Spell Check wiggly? (Which, of course, then would need to be picked up by Preflight.)

    Well, yeah, but in that sense it's not that different from other stylesheets I have. (For all journals I make, I have at least one "current" updated template.)
    One could in general add stuff like this:
    \dC (?# wrong -- it should be [digit]°C)
    \doC (?# with a superscript 'oh' -- wrong)
    \d °C (?# with a space -- wrong)
    \d° C (?# space on the other side, also wrong)
    \dºC (?# masculine ordinal rather than degree -- also wrong!)
    An advantage over a warning wiggly line, rather than just putting all possible variants into the FindChangeList, is that you can always ignore the wiggly -- just like you do when a spell check tags potentially bad spelling (oh okay, "Peter Spier" does not get tagged, but "Jongware" does!).
    But I'll forgive Adobe if they can't find the time to squeeze this into CS5, somewhere in the next (hold on--) 05d:23h:32m:07sec.

  • (none) style gets applied to numbered list & font size not matching text in my style sheet

    RoboHelp 9 (9.0.2.271)
    Something is wrong with my style sheet, and it only started happening after I created Master Page for the first time. This happens whether or not the new Master Page is applied to a topic:  Every time I type any text in a topic, then click the Numbered List icon in the toolbar, the style goes from Normal to (none), and the font changes from my style sheet's Normal 10pt to 8pt, for the number as well as the text.
    I don't see how the new Master Page has anything to do with it because it's not applied to this particular topic.  I had created a Master Page in RoboHelp HTML and applied my style sheet, then my topics to it. I have a footer in the Master Page and applied 8pt font using inline formatting (not the style sheet).
    I created a new project to see what would happen.
    When I apply my style sheet, then apply the numbered list to text, the text font is correct (10pt), but the number font is wrong (8pt).
    But when I apply the default style sheet to the topic, the number font and text font match.
    How can I get the number and text fonts to match in my style sheet?
    I found a workaround by applying inline formatting to the next (10pt) after selecting the text and clicking the numbered list icon.  Below is the html code.  The numbered steps in red are the ones that are not correct (8 pt).  The code with the correct formatting (after I applied inline formatting) is in blue.
    <body>
    <h1>My Overview</h1>
    <p>example</p>
    <ol type="1">
    <li>first step</li>
    <li>second step</li>
    </ol>
    <ol type="1">
    <li style="font-size: 10pt;">Fixed by applying inline formatting to
      10pt after selecting the numbered list icon</li>
    <li style="font-size: 10pt;">next step</li>
    </ol>
    <p>&#160;</p>
    <?rh-placeholder type="footer" ?>
    </body>
    Thanks.

    Amebr,
    That was helpful.  I'm looking at a topic now, and both the Apply Style list on the Formatting toolbar show (none) when I click a numbered list that I created using the Created a Numbered List or Create a Bulleted List on the toolbar.
    This is the html code for the correct font (10pt):
    <ol>
    <li class="p">this is the (none) style when I use the numbering button
      on the toolbar (which is inline formatting)</li>
    <li class="p">this is the (none) style when I use the numbering button
      on the toolbar&#160;(which is inline formatting)</li>
    <li class="p">this is the (none) style when I use the numbering button
      on the toolbar&#160;(which is inline formatting)</li>
    </ol>
    Both styles list show the correct custom styles I created for numbered lists, though.  Below is the code (correct font):
    <ol>
    <li class="p-ProcedureSteps"><p class="ProcedureSteps">this is from
      my custom numbered style and looks correct</p></li>
    </ol>
    What's strange is, if I create a list and highlight it, then click the Apply Numbered List button in the toolbar, the numbers and text font size changes to 8 point and my Normal font is 10 pt, and both style lists show (none).  That's what I wanted to figure out in my original post.  I opened up the stylesheet and I don't see where that's applied.  In Flare, you can easily see in a table how the styles are formatted, down to each class.
    This is the code for the incorrect font (8pt):
    <ol type="1">
    <li>why is this 8pt?</li>
    <li>why is this 8pt?</li>
    <li>why is this 8pt?</li>
    </ol>
    Below is a screenshot.
    Maybe someone can figure this out. Thanks!

  • [AS] CS3- Find any text with style, then replace that text with a new applied fill color.

    I am trying to find the simplest way in cs3 to find any text with style, then replace that text with a new fill color. I can find text and change text. I can find a style and change it to a new style. I can't seem to find a style and change the applied fill color. I do not want to change the properties of the style, just the applied color. Yes, I want the + sign, for now. I know, why not update the style, I am not allowed to. Any help would be great. Since the search is not available, I need a new response.
    Thanks.

    You can work around the bug by just doing a find, then looping through the<br />results, changing the color one at a time. It'll be a fraction slower, but<br />should do the trick:<br /><br />tell application "Adobe InDesign CS3"<br />    set find text preferences to nothing<br />    set properties of find text preferences to {applied paragraph style:"The<br />name"}<br />    set theFinds to find text document 1<br />    repeat with i from 1 to count of theFinds<br />        set properties of item i of theFinds to {fill color:"Replace color"}<br />    end repeat<br />end tell<br /><br />The bug is fixed in CS4, BTW.<br /><br />-- <br />Shane Stanley <[email protected]><br />AppleScript Pro Florida, April 2009 <a href=http://scriptingmatters.com/aspro>

  • How to handle paragraph styles in imported text with no tagged paragraph styles

    Hi
    Im currently trying to import a file (word file / excel I have both formats) into an indesign book and formatting the text automatically!
    My question is: How is it possible to reflow text into frames and when changing frame it changes paragraph?
    Or how is it possible to change paragraph style when forcing a line break when using text reflow?
    I have already figured out how to reflow the text, and actually also managed to relow text into the frames and change paragraph style. I know how to use the keep option, and by this change the paragraph style when e.g. changing frame break/page break etc.  (but if the content being flowed-in is not tagged with style names then I cannot figure out how to do it) The document and its content I whish to import do not have any tagged paragraphs!
    Then I tried to look into "object styles" and format a text frame on a master page with an object style, and by using a "dilimiter character" forcing the text to start in a new frame when bringing the frame into live on a page. But here I cannot make the "text frame/object style" to apply or to work.
    If any of you have a hint, I would be more than happy to hear from you
    This picture are illustrating the outcome I would to get to....

    If the incoming text does not have styles, or has only one style, there is really not much you can do other than assign styles after the import. If there are recognizable patterns in the formatting, a lot of that can be done with Find/Change, and there are a few scripts floating around that can help automate some of that.
    Also, if your styles have a a good "next style" heirarchy built in, you can select large blocks of text (up to the point where applying next style would be incorrect), then right click the style name in the paragraph styles panel and choose apply style and next style (remove overrides). Warning. Removing overrides will remove any locally applied formatting like bold or italics, so local formatting should be converted to character styles first. Applied character styles are not overrides and will be preserved.

  • How to get certain applied styles using script?

    Hi All,
    I need to know how to get certain applied styles using ID Scripting. I don't have much experience in InDesign so need some help.
    Here is a screenshot with a sample text with the said styles applied and highlighted.
    I need to know what texts in my document have these styles applied like All Caps, Strikethrough, Underline, Subscript and Superscript etc.
    Please help.
    Thanks!

    Hi Poortip87
    The first thing you have to understand is how to refer to "where" you want to apply the style.
    If you want the script to apply the style to the selected text then you would use for example app.selection[0].strikeThru = true;
    If you for example want to underline the last word of the first paragraph of the first story you would use app.activeDocument.stories[0].paragraphs[0].words[-1].underline = true;
    If you just wanted the first letter of that word underlined then you would add .characters[0] after the words[-1]
    To for example apply All Caps to all the text in all the stories you would use
    app.activeDocument.stories.everyItem().texts[0].capitalization = Capitalization.ALL_CAPS;
    The easiest way to find how to set properties to a selections is to set them manually and make the selection and then run the script below.
    You should be able to find all the properties you want very easily after running the script.
    Or you can use Jongwares excellent reference guide. Indesign JavaScript Help

    @s_ashok – you'll find the right methods and properties in the CHM file for InDesign CS2 at:
    http://www.jongware.com/idjshelp.html
    Just a few hints:
    InDesign CS2 does not support GREP search/replace, so every line in your code that points to GREP does not work.
    Further: "app.findTextPreferences" and "app.changeTextPreferences" were "app.findPreferences" and "app.changePreferences" in InDesign CS2. And then there were no "findChangeTextOptions" or any counterpart for that in CS2…
    That should get you running…
    I have no InDesign CS2 installed to debug, so this is all I can say…
