Getting Admin privileges

Hello.  I have a brand new iMac 10.9.4, and I am trying to install a game from a disc.  When I click on the installer icon, I get this message:  "This installer requires admin privileges to run."  This is a home computer, and I am signed in as the administrator.  So why won't the installer open?  This is an older game, from 2007, but it should still open, I should think.  Any suggestions would be most welcome.  Thank you.

So why won't the installer open?
Because it's obsolete or defective.

  • Limited Admin Privileges/Specific Elevation of User Accounts

I'm hoping to create an account on my laptop for my roommate.  I don't want him to have a full admin account, but he knows enough about computers that he could troubleshoot networking, and I want to enable him to install programs on the system.  I'm not sure what the best way to go about creating an account which can elevate itself for specific tasks; I've never modified my sudoers file before, and I don't know how to do so to grant him access to the privileges he should have.  I don't want to force him to use Terminal; I'd rather have him be able to enter a username/password for Admin privileges when prompted, whether that's his standard user account or a limited Admin account, but I want to make sure that account DOESN'T have access to modify anything in Users & Groups, can't create accounts with dscl, can't modify the keychain or hard drive partitions, etc.
Am I right in thinking the sudoers file is the best way to approach this?  How do I find out what processes to allow access to?  Does Network Preferences, for example, have any dependencies he will also need to be able to run?  Also, is there a good starting point/article on modifying the sudoers file for this type of thing anywhere?  <<clearly googling the wrong thing because my searches just tell me how to add someone to the sudoers file>>

To modify network settings he needs to be able to unlock the preference pane. If you can unlock one pane you can unlock them all including Users & Groups.
While it is more feasible allow him some latitude in the application installing scenario it's going to be a pain. The non-server version of OS X is just not setup for this. Either a user has admin privileges or he doesn't there is no part way.
Again if you trust him then you should also trust him not to do what you don't want him to do. If you tell him he can do x but please don't do y and you think he won't abide by your rules then giving him any access is potential trouble.
And again if he can get to the machine when you are not around he can do what he likes, privileges or no privileges.
    good luck,
    regards

  • Our IT guy installed the new Adobe reader on my machine, but FF isn't picking it up and I don't have admin privileges to install it as a plug-in.

I just need to know how to get FF to "pick up" the new version of Acrobat Reader that is already on my computer. I got a new work computer, and don't have admin privileges to install AR as a plug-in on FF. The new version is fully installed -- just not in FF. I'm running Win7 and FF 18.0.1.
    Thanks for the help!

Firefox should find the Adobe Acrobat plugin through a registry scan, which probably runs at startup.
I notice in your "More system details" list you have this, which sounds promising:
Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 11.0.01
If you check the following tab, is it enabled?
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Add-ons > Plugins category
If it's enabled, is the problem that Firefox still wants to launch PDFs externally? If so, you might need to change a setting here:
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Applications
In the search box on that tab, type pdf and pause while the list is filtered. You normally get two or more entries and there are drop-down boxes on the right side to choose how to open them. Does that work?

  • User requires ADMIN privilege to perform this operation.

    Hi
I have written a procedure which creates a new workspace. The owner of the package has been granted apex_administrator_role. This works fine with SQL Developer/Plus.
But when I try to use this procedure from my Apex page I get User requires ADMIN privilege to perform this operation.
I understand that Apex makes a connection with APEX_PUBLIC_USER, and this can be one of the reasons of the error. But I would like to know if there is some solution:
    My code is:
          apex_instance_admin.add_workspace (
            p_workspace          => p_name,
            p_primary_schema     => p_name,
            p_additional_schemas => '');
--p_name is passed as a parameter and workspace and primary_schema name are the sameHabib

I think you will need to grant privleges to apex_instance_admin directly to the owner of the package.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E14072_01/network.112/e10574/authorization.htm#BABFJEGJ
The privileges of the procedure's definer must be granted directly to the user, not granted through roles.

  • Why can't I get administrators' privilege

    Dear All :
Last year, I created a group in DC which named 'Local Admin' and then added user account 'aliufr' to this group. Meanwhile, added this group to local computer's administrators group by GPO.
So I can add each AD account to this group and he will get administrators privilege after logged on domain computer.
    It works well before.
But today I found the following issue :
    1, I deployed a new computer and make sure 'Local Admin" group is in this local computer 'administrators' group;
    2,I Created a new account 'abianja' and use it to log on the new computer;  now this user doesn't have administrators privilege;
3, I added 'abianja' to 'Local Admin' group in DC and re-log on new computer ,  this user still doesn't get administrators privilege, can't install anything.
Also I tried user this account log on another new computer (this is first time log on this computer with 'abianja'), it got administrators privilege.
DO you have any good ideas ?  Can't I add another domain group to Local computer's administrators group ?

Are you ensuring that you are running the install with the option "Run as Administrator"?
To see if you are getting blocked you can just log on as the user, bring up a command prompt and type
    whoami /groups /fo list
Then bring up a command prompt selecting "Run as Administrator"
    whoami /groups /fo list
If you see a difference in the number of groups the user is just being blocked by UAC controls since it gets the standard user token and not the administrator token

  • Installer requires Admin Privilege to run

I'm a new user on a Macbook. Its been about 20 years since I last was on an apple. I need help, I'm trying ton install a game on my laptop. When I click on the installer to install the game a window pops up saying "installer requires Admin privilege to run" and the only option is to quit. What do I need to do to get this game installed?
    Thanks so much!!

/Applications/Utilities/Disc Utility - a very handy tool in all sorts of situations.
I'm most surprised that a new account with admin permissions wasn't able to perform the install I'm at a loss what might be causing that to be honest ... maybe the repair permissions on the drive will sort it out, perhaps the entire folder has had write access removed somehow. You could select the destination folder location and Get Info on it and look at the permissions settings at the bottom, does it allow any user to Write there or is it Read only I wonder ?

  • Migration closed 1/2 way through now cannot access any admin privileges

A little background I got my new imac to replace an older g4 ibook I did not however get to using the migration assistant tell 4 months after getting the imac.
when I ran the migration assistant it told me that the account that I wanted to move over had the same name as the account that is the admin account and asked if I waned to replace it and I selected yes. Now the bad part I did not tell my wife what I was doing and she came in half way into the migration and wanted to use the imac, she closed my ibook that was in the way and changed users.
Now on my imac my admin login is gone I can see that all the files have been moved into a Deleted Users folder under /users so I know all our family photos are there and save for now. I cannot however do anything on the computer, my login was the only admin account. I cannot use the install disk to reset the admin password, or use the disk utility. They both ask for an admin username and password, I have tried every password I have ever used but none of them work.
when I check the netInfo my account that was the admin account is gone from here as well
If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

What? This is very strange. I'd like to look at some of your netinfo database. These commands will not change anything. Log in as one of the accounts you just gave admin privileges to.
Open the Terminal (from /Applications/Utilities) and copy and paste the following into the Terminal window, one line at a time, with a return after each line:
    id
    nireport . /users uid gid name realname home | awk '$1>500 {print $0}'
    nicl . read /groups/admin
    nicl . read /users/`id -un`
    ls -ln /Users
Copy and paste all of the output (include your commands) and post it here. You can edit out anything sensitive if you really must!
Also, unless it is obvious, tell me which was your original admin user (I would assume uid 501, but you never know )
EDIT I'm unlikely to get back to you today since it is now getting late here.

  • X200 Laptop WWAN ATT Communicaton Manager 6.10 to work without Admin Privileges

Hello newbie to this forum....I have x200's I deploy in a corporate environment and we do not want to use the access connection software from Lenovo.  ATT Comm Mgr works with admin privileges but when you remove it it just hangs and never connects.  Everything lights up signal strength is good.  Does anyone know where in the registry or what hack to get this software to work without admin rights?? Contacted Lenovo and they only want you to use Access Connections and ATT is no help either.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!! thanks

Hi x200RQ, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community.
This is not a direct answer to your question, but you can use AT&T WWAN without either Access Connections or AT&T Communications Manager. Here are the AT&T instructions for this in Vista and XP.
This might get you where you want to be... tell us if that helps.

  • Creaive Cloud desktop latest update asking for admin privileges when I am admin

I have had creative cloud desktop working well over the last few weeks but the latest update is asking for adminstrator privileges to complete the installation - but my login is already the adminstrator on my machine with admin privileges. I have now tried uninstalling and reinstalling from scratch and have the same problem.  So I currently have no CC desktop, this must be a bug with the current update, has anybody managed to get round this?
    I'm running Windows 7.

Managed to to resolve this by temporarily disabling UAC (User access control) - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/turn-user-account-control-on-or-off

  • Captivate 4 admin privileges gone

Hi: I have admin privileges on my own laptop, but I clicked Adobe Captivate too quickly and launched two windows simulanteously.  The second window doesn't have admin privileges.  I thought after closing both and shutting down, the application would revert back to admin privileges.  No luck. So, I changed the properties of the icon to run as admin after a reboot.  Still no luck.  How can I have my admin privileges back? Many thanks in advance.

I think you are misunderstanding what is happening here.
This message is a default message that appears to let you know Captivate needs to be launched with Admin privileges.  It's not necessarily indicating you don't currently have it set up that way.
Just tick the Don't Ask This Again box to get rid of this warning message.
If you've already set up the icon to launch Captivate with admin privileges you should be fine.

  • Run executable at end of installation. Admin privileges?

    Hi all,
As always, please forgive this questioning if it has already been answered somewhere.
    Here is my scenario:
I have a batch file with the following in it:
    cd C:\Temp\install\anotherInstaller
    setup.exe /q /AcceptLicenses yes
"anotherInstaller" is an installer for a different LabVIEW application that I am including with the main one.
I run the batch file from the "Advanced" page of my installer under "Run executable at end of installation."
I run my top level installer with admin privileges in Windows 7 x64.
The installer hums along and everything works as expected until the batch file gets called.
The batch file gets called successfully by my top level installer, but "anotherInstaller" doesn't run.
The batch script works fine if I run it by itself with elevated privileges, but doesn't run anotherInstaller if it is called by my top level installer.
My theory is that the executable called under "Run executable at end of installation" does not execute with elevated privileges, even if the top level installer does.
    Can anyone verify this?
Is there any other reason why my second installer won't work?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jim

Okay, it does appear to execute with elevated privileges, and I have a new clue:
When I turn off the "/q" option on anotherInstaller, the following message appears in a dialog:
"Error: Another Installation/uninstallation session, deployment session, or NI Update Service is running. Finish that session and try again."
Ugh.  Anyone know of a good way to "piggyback" another LabVIEW built installer as part of a batch file?  (I have a whole ton of other housekeeping I handle in my batch file, so I can't very well avoid using the batch file.)

  • Running Palm Desktop without Admin Privileges?

I'm trying to get Palm Desktop 6.2 working on my company's Win 7 laptop. To get it to (mostly) work, I had to install using the administrator password.  In its wisdom, the company does not give me permanent admin privileges but provides a temporary checkout mechanism for the administrator password.  Palm Desktop will only run only if I run it as administrator with the password enabled and checked out (and entered when the program is run), an incredibly tedious procedure just to run Palm Desktop.  Is there any way to do the password checkout just once and enable running Palm Desktop just as a user to avoid this tedious procedure?  Otherwise, running as a user, Palm Desktop will just hang at the splash screen.  I tried changing privileges (UAC) to all the program files in the Programs (x86)\Palm folder to allow access to users but that didn't help.  Is it to the data as well?  Thanks in advance for any help.
    mraki
P.S.  I posted earlier with the missing files problem listed in the registry (Annanotifier.dll, pdn20.dll, AlarmNotify.dll, EASNotify.dll) and these still post a HotSync missing files error but seem to cause no problem other than the error message.  Thanks for any help here as well.

I'm afraid I have no personal experience with what you're attempting to do...
All I can remember is that Full Admin rights were supposed to be granted to the user account during the entire installation of Palm Desktop, and a successful HotSync performed.  Whether the check-out routine is doing this is beyond me.
Once the above is complete, the rights can be revoked back to "User".
You might want to search over at Brighthand.com for some information on this subject.

  • This installer requres admin privileges to run

    i'm trying to install pcsx2.
i need Cg-2.2.0006 but when i open it, I get a window that tells me this installer requires admin privileges to run
    what should i do?

Hi, are you running in an admin account?
If you aren't the admin, you'll still need the admin's credentials.

  • This installer requires admin privileges to run

I'm trying to install a new Application (ViaCAD 2D/3D). I get the message "This installer requires admin privileges to run" with no option to enter admin password.
Thing is, I am clearly the Admin user with all privs.
Searched a lot of forums and tried a lot of ideas... but to no avail. Prior installations proceeded without error. Of course, the manufacturer support simply blamed Apple and closed the support question. Console log shows no errors.
This one has me totally stumped (and I have 20+ years admin experience).

    Update:
The application installed on another system running 10.4. On the offending system, I tried another Admin account, ran repair permissions from Utilities, made sure Admin had R/W privs on Apps folder, moving the .dmg file to the Applications folder, did a reboot, searched for a VidCad plist file. Out of ideas.

  • Premiere EL & Admin privileges

    Hi,
I have a PC with Windows 7 Pro x64. I have two accounts created:
    - User account
    - Admin account
I logged in with the Admin account, as I always do when I have to install a new software, and installed Adobe Photoshop & Premiere Elements 11. Performed the updates too and all runs fine.
I logged in with the User account and both Organizer and Photoshop run fine. Anytime I load Premiere EL it asks me for Admin password. This is not fine and it should not be this way.
I tried to google on the Internet but was unable to find a solution.
I do not know if it has to do with file permission and if so do not know where to act.
Can someone please suggest me what to do? I do not wish to grant User Admin privileges having to convert this user in ad Admin user.
    Thank you

    SAngeli
Thanks for the reply. I understand what you want to do and not sure if you can get to "fully make Premiere Elements work without Admin privileges".
As for the article that you referenced
This is my interpretation of it "it worked" post. The originator of the thread seems to be pointing to MPEG2 Activation, related to one of the features
of the program. The suggested fix is to go to a computer that already has MPEG2 Activation, find and copy for the information found
    Program Data
    Adobe
    Common
    Adobe
    ARA
    11.0 (in your specific case)
and in the 11.0 Folder is the file named Repository2_0.db.
And, then paste into the computer without the MPEG2 Activation any information from the above that you need to match the above.
I have not tried this since I run the program from a User Account with Administrative Privileges and an Internet connections; consequently, MPEG2 activation and other program activations take place automatically behind the scenes with an active Internet connection. But there are other program functions beside MPEG2 activation that may not be covered by this fix.
By the way, when you run into these challenges associated with user accounts without administrative privileges and administrative privileges in general, are you given the opportunity to "Run As Administrative" for that project and that function that trigger the message?
